From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

After Warner Bros. Pictures announced the cancelation of the film Coyote Vs. Acme, the studio has decided to change course and un-cancel the film.
The film’s director, Dave Green, will now be allowed to sell the film to another distributor for a theatrical or streaming release.
Warner Bros. is currently hosting screenings for Amazon Prime Video, Apple and Netflix.
The upcoming hybrid live-action/animated movie was set to suffer the same fate as Batgirl and Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, by being pulled from the release schedule to take tax write-downs from last year.
The company received extensive criticism for canceling the films.

Texas congressman Joaquin Castro has taken to X to slam Warner Bros Discovery for axing the $70M Coyote vs. Acme for a reported $30M tax writeoff.

The shelved Coyote vs Acme film may see the light of day after all. Amid industry outcry that WB was shelving yet another film, the studio has begun screening the movie for streaming services. Deadline reports that Prime Video seems to be the frontrunner as far as acquiring the movie goes. The shelving of the completed film has spurred lots of anger within the industry, as unlike the previously shelved Batgirl or Scoob’s Holiday Haunt, Coyote Vs Acme was complete and scheduled for a theatrical release.

A good romantic drama gives you a poignant ride you'll never forget while making you believe that love can make anything happen. But in "My Policeman," that ride stains your memory with transgressions and betrayals, and love makes people do things they regret. Whether or not the film can be considered a "good" romantic drama will probably be the subject of debate, but there's no denying that the Prime Video picture doesn't entirely amount to the sum of its parts, which are actually mostly good despite some core structural slowdowns that mar the overall experience. In fact, it feels like this one has the potential to build a second life on streaming. Either way, "My Policeman" is a touching and sometimes laborious emotional roller coaster that is sure to leave not one dry eye in whatever living room you choose to watch it in.

While visiting a remote reserve, the group is attacked by a ferocious lion, who’s on the warpath after vicious poachers massacred his pride.
Review: Beast is a highly effective little thriller. While some may bristle at the idea of yet another “animal gone rogue” movie, under the eye of director Baltasar Kormákur and producer Will Packer, Beast makes the distinction that there’s no such thing as an “evil” animal. Instead, the lion hunting our heroes has been traumatized by the movie’s true villains, poachers, who massacred his pride to sell them off as trophies. No, this lion is simply butchering any human it crosses paths with, as it can’t distinguish between good and bad guys.
Review: Beast is a highly effective little thriller. Opposition to the Academy’s plan to award eight Oscars prior to the live telecast continues to grow, with more than 350 new names — including more than a dozen Oscar-winning editors, cinematographers and production designers — added to the petition sent last week to Academy president David Rubin urging a reversal of the plan.
Among the industry professionals signing are Oscar-winning cinematographers John Seale (“The English Patient”), John Toll (“Braveheart”) and Dean Semler (“Dances With Wolves”), and Oscar-winning editors Richard Chew and Paul Hirsch (“Star Wars”), Mikkel Neilsen (“The Sound of Metal”), Pietro Scalia (“JFK”) and Zach Staenberg (“The Matrix”).

“Music is really running through the core of the film,” explains Oscar-winning composer Steven Price of “Last Night in Soho.” It’s his latest collaboration with director Edgar Wright, after previously contributing music for “The World’s End,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” and “Baby Driver.” This time, Price was tasked with a 1960’s inspired score that had elements of horror. Best original song Oscar contenders Beyoncé and Van Morrison are among those who received nominations in the visual media categories at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (Hmma). Composers Hans Zimmer and Nicholas Britell were included among the familiar names picking up nods in the score categories.
The awards will be presented Nov. 17. The HMMAs honor composers, songwriters, and music supervisors for their work in music for film, television, and videogames.

That’s a wrap on all three of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, so let the music play!
“RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the reality competition series which is hosted by drag queen RuPaul Charles, won big with five Emmys in several categories, including Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program, Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program (which is RuPaul’s sixth straight Emmy win for the category).
Also, to further the franchise’s stardom, “RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked,” a behind-the-scenes spinoff of the reality series, won the unstructured reality category for the first time.
None of this weekend’s three Creative Arts shows were televised. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.
The *real* Emmys, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, air live next Sunday, Sept. 19, starting at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.

Can someone get Edgar Wright a DJ residency? Or a prime-time (or drive-time) radio slot. Few working directors are so passionate and eager to play the tunes, to fill the audio mix of their films with their voluminous record collection. In the immensely entertaining Last Night in Soho, he associates and recalls––especially if you come from or reside in the UK––the Britpop era; that time in the mid-90s where British pop music (not forgetting the Spice Girls along with Oasis and Blur) was commercially triumphant, when it wore its British identity on its sleeve in ways that ranged from prideful to nostalgic to necrophiliac (the latter word as music journalist Scott Plagenhoef described it). Also vital to recall are the overlapping cross-currents of the Euro 96 football tournament (where the “It’s Coming Home” terrace anthem and meme derives from) and Tony Blair’s controversial rebranding of the UK Labour Party.

Leave it to Edgar Wright to play with genre expectations and deliver yet another delightfully off-kilter thriller that also thrills with its undeniably trippy atmosphere and blast to the past of swinging 60’s London. The director of films like Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The World’s End, and of course the cult classic Shaun Of The Dead has taken the seemingly glamorous and intriguing era of the 60s in Mod London circa ’65 and turned it into an increasingly menacing and dark period, but still fueled by a killer song selection that takes us from Cilla Black to Petula Clark. It is a mix that has you in its first half longing to go back to that period in time like protagonist Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) , but then maybe rethink that decision. Just like many of Wright’s twisty movies he doesn’t easily let the audience off the hook.

Big Pharma are killers, and they take a resounding beating, in “Sweet Girl” — literally. An actioner about a father who responds to personal tragedy by going on a bloodthirsty rampage with his teen daughter in tow, Brian Andrew Mendoza’s feature debut is a giddily outlandish exploitation throwback, featuring Jason Momoa as a grieving bruiser whose answer for everything is violence, violence and more violence. Delivering the sort of R-rated macho carnage that was all the rage in the ’80s and ’90s, when it debuts on Netflix on Aug. 20.

Streaming has obviously changed the game in many ways, one of which is the prevalence of the “skip credits” option. Nearly every streaming services gives viewers the choice to skip opening credits, and then at the end of the episode, it automatically loads the next one instead of letting the end credits roll or promotes a new program if it’s the end of a series or film. For composers, whose work is typically showcased over the credits, it’s not exactly ideal.
