As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.

Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

“She weren’t a prostitute this time – she were innocent.”
This line – spoken by David Morrissey as Dcs George Oldfield in The Long Shadow’s third episode, when 16 year old Jayne MacDonald is found dead – pretty much says it all. Because by this point in ITV’s Yorkshire Ripper drama, we know two other women, Wilma McCann and Emily Jackson, have also been killed, but after the police labelled them as sex workers their deaths have been treated very differently to Jayne MacDonald.
We’ve seen detectives like Oldfield refer to sex workers as “whores”, “slags”, “hookers”, “prozzies” and “tarts”, but it’s still a gut punch to viewers to hear it said so plainly: to the police – even senior detectives – sex workers who get murdered aren’t “innocent”, but somehow deserving of the violence inflicted on them.

Don’t despair about the end of another non-existent British summer – UK TV always gets good when the weather turns, as the nights draw in and we all retreat indoors, finally getting sick of rainy barbecues and being chased by wasps in pub gardens.

The BBC first announced it was making six-part comedy thriller Black Ops back in June 2021 – and boy is it worth the wait.
Created by Famalam’s BAFTA-winning duo of Gbemisola Ikumelo and Akemnji Ndifornyen, it follows two inexperienced Community Support Officers – Ikumelo plays Dom alongside The Wheel of Time’s Hammed Animashaun as Kay – who get recruited into a perilous undercover Met Police operation infiltrating a London drug gang.
There are so many elements that combine to make Black Ops a joyous must-watch:
1. You’ll Instantly Love The Characters
The sibling-like partnership between Dom and Kay makes us feel immediately at ease in their world. So when the enigmatic Di Clinton Blair covertly approaches them to join his “off the books” undercover operation in episode one, we’re invested in their story from the off.
Dom is smart, quick-thinking but also ultimately immature and quite spoiled – she lives at home...

Sally Wainwright’s “Gentleman Jack” is almost back for Season 2 on HBO.
The Suranne Jones-starring show about real-life historical figure Anne Lister — who lived in Yorkshire in the 1800s, and who was known not only for defying societal stereotypes about women and business, style of dress, and all manner of things, and who kept a coded diary of her romances with women — returns next month, HBO confirmed Thursday. The network also dropped a brand new teaser.
In the video clip, someone calls Anne “gentleman Jack” to her back, a nickname she got for her style of dress, prompting a shocked face from Jones.
It also hints at the drama ahead across its eight episode second season as Anne and her wife, the wealthy Ann Walker (they said vows together at home), as they try to carry out their relationship in private, but with society trying to invade their business.

Sally Wright (Katherine Kelly) has spent the last five years in prison for crimes she didn't commit.
Sundance Now's new import begins with her release after being wrongfully convicted of 15-year-old Matty Taylor's death after rumors of a sexual affair between the two began swirling around their small Cumbrian town.
Sally returns home, hopeful that she can reclaim all that she lost, but these stories are rarely that optimistic.
Sally's life was torn to shreds when Matty was murdered. As a student, Sally cared for him, counseled him, and helped him to find his path through school and resulting from his less-than-ideal home life.
Because of that connection, rumors about their affair traveled fast. What's more exciting and disgusting than a teacher taking advantage of her student? Well, she killed him, too! Except, she didn't.
Despite what she suffered, Sally never lashed out angrily. Instead, she fought to have her...

"What happened to you... Ain't got nothing to do with God, ya know." Dark Star Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Dirty God, which originally premiered at the 2019 Rotterdam and Sundance Film Festivals. From Dutch filmmaker Sacha Polak, the film tells the story of a young British mother struggling to reclaim her life after a brutal acid attack. After facial surgery, her beauty is lost beneath the scars. Set in London, it stars Vicky Knight – a burn victim herself, in a stunning debut performance – as Jade. It's described as a "tragically beautiful" film telling a "story of human resilience that can't help but move you." Also starring Katherine Kelly, Eliza Brady-Girard, Rebecca Stone, Bluey Robinson, Dana Marineci, Tachia Newall, and Frieda Thiel. This film really does look exceptionally beautiful and meaningful, a touching story that can empower us to be more empathetic and understanding. Here's...

Nothing is out of place on “Criminal: UK.” The closest things get to being disheveled is a chair left untucked or maybe a door left slightly ajar. Otherwise, the Netflix interrogation drama slides rather confidently into the polished professionalism category of TV shows, where drama happens in spite of perfectly designed interiors bathed in carefully controlled mood lighting.
It’s that sense of impeccable theatricality that leads to the central tension in “Criminal.” The audience is faced with suspects tied to crimes theoretically inspired by real-life instances of kidnapping, assault, trafficking, and murder. But the show itself often feels like a simulation. It’s a well-composed one, but that gap between the show’s raw real-time ambitions and the tidiness of the final product is one that always seems to hover over that questioning room table.

Keira Knightley, Matt Smith, Matthew Goode, and Ralph Fiennes star in the real-life story of British whistleblower Katharine Gun.
Keria Knightley is an actress often associated with period dramas—a choice, she told BBC News while promoting her film Colette, because it's where she finds the "strongest roles"—but her latest film, while technically a period drama, takes place much more recently than the films we usually think of as falling into that category.
The movie is called Official Secrets, and it tells the story of British whistleblower Katharine Gun (played by Knightley), a civilian translator at the Government Communications Headquarters intelligence office in the U.K., who leaked top-secret information to the press concerning illegal activities by the United States of America in their push for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Vicky Knight gives an assured debut performance in this powerful drama about a young woman rebuilding her life
An astonishingly vibrant and engaging performance by feature first-timer Vicky Knight drives this urgent, passionate drama from Dutch film-maker Sacha Polak. Set in a selfie-obsessed world of Instagrammed “beauty”, it follows the survivor of an acid attack as she struggles to reclaim her life, and redefine her identity. Making her English-language debut, Polak (director of festival-favourite award-winners Hemel and Zurich) conjures a fearless drama, as raw and revealing as it is tender and affecting. There are no dramatic platitudes here, nor soft-soaped cliches. This is full-blooded (and arrestingly tactile) fare, which gets right under the skin of its central character, in appropriately unruly and unflinching fashion.
Scarred by her ex-partner and father of her child, Jade (Knight) is discharged from hospital wearing a claustrophobic lower-face mask that eerily recalls Édith Scob’s...

‘Gentleman Jack’: HBO & BBC Renew Sally Wainwright’s Suranne Jones-Fronted Period Drama For Season 2
HBO and BBC period drama Gentleman Jack has been handed a second season. Sally Wainwright’s Suranne Jones-fronted series will return for another eight-part run.
It comes as the Lookout Point-produce drama is still on the air. The series debuted on HBO on April 22 in its new Monday night slot and on the BBC on May 19. It became the BBC’s biggest new drama launch of the year with an average overnight audience of 5.1 million viewers.
Written by Happy Valley creator Wainwright, it tells the story of Anne Lister, played by Jones, who had a passion for life and a mind for business, and bucked society’s expectations at every turn.
Gentleman Jack focuses on Regency landowner Lister in the period drama, which is set in 1832 Halifax, West Yorkshire. She is determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, by reopening the coal mines and marrying well.

As the UK’s Brexit political thriller plays out in real time, IFC Films has set a release date for director Gavin Hood’s take on another one from 15 years ago. Official Secrets, the story of Iraq-invasion whistleblower Katharine Gun, will hit select theaters on August 23.
The film, which premiered at Sundance in January, stars Keira Knightley as Gun. Charged with breaking the Official Secrets Act in Britain, and facing imprisonment, she reaches out to Ben Emmerson (Ralph Fiennes), one of the top lawyers in the country, to take her case and defend her actions. With her life, freedom and marriage threatened, Gun risks everything by leaking a classified email to the press in the hope that this simple act could help halt an unjust war.
The pic also stars Matthew Goode, Adam Bakri and Matt Smith as journalist Martin Bright, who first publicly broke the news about the memo.
