Exclusive: Wayfarer Studios has promoted Jamey Heath to President. In his new role at the company, he will be tasked with building out its vision and ensuring that all creative decisions, business opportunities, and partnerships are in line with its overall mission and values. Heath will also now oversee the financial health and management of the independent production studio.

Here's day three in our countdown of the top Christmas TV episodes of all time: entries 60 to 41...
Read entries 100 - 81 here and entries 80 - 61 here.
Since the medium’s infancy, viewers have enjoyed sharing holidays with their favourite television characters. We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. Either way, Christmas episodes tend to demonstrate the strengths of our favourite series, and it’s long been a festive ritual of mine to wheel out old DVD sets and settle back for a few favourites during December.

Had Freaks And Geeks, Caprica and more not been cancelled, here’s what their showrunners had planned for their futures. Spoilers…
Warning: major spoilers for all shows listed below.
Closure. It’s an important psychological concept. Without closure, it’s difficult to grieve, move on, make peace and nurture your inner Ewok or whatever it is the self-help books tell us. When a TV show is cancelled before its story has been fully told, the result is an unscratchable itch.
That itch can have positive side effects. The creativity for instance, of fanfic and fan art, and the tenacity and camaraderie of doggedly pursued fan campaigns. The less positive side though is, well, not so pretty. Sleepless nights, anxiety at work, a tendency to grasp total strangers by the shoulders with both hands, hot stress-tears streaming down your cheeks, and cry “So did Lois and Clark raise that baby or what?...

15 years ago today, the Toros stepped out onto the football field and put some serious cheer back into the atmosphere. To steal a phrase from the film: Bring It On's the poo - so take a big whiff.
But what have Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku and the rest of the squad been cheering about since then? To mark the movie's birthday, we put down the pompoms and find out what they've been up to since.
Kirsten Dunst
A Hollywood star from the age of 12 thanks to her breakthrough role in Interview with the Vampire, Dunst's star was burning brightly when she led the Toros as Torrance Shipman. Two years later, she went on to land her biggest role as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's three Spider-man films.

Joss Whedon chats to us about Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Jason Statham, what he's up to next, and more...
Joss Whedon: assembler of Avengers, slayer of vampires, houser of dolls, vlogger of Doctor Horrible, and now, um, ageist of Ultron. To be fair, Joss Whedon is geek royalty, and needs no introduction. So hopefully, he won’t mind that we gave him such a naff one.
We got to chat with the man himself at the Avengers: Age Of Ultron press event, and here’s what happened...
From what we’ve heard about this one, it sounds like you had to trim down a lot in the editing room. Was there any particular favourite scene you wish you could have saved?
Well, there was more shirtless Thor. The DVD extras are going to be enormously popular. But no, for me, it’s really a couple of little exchanges that...

Well, that didn’t take long.
Two days after Game of Thrones veteran Michelle MacLaren left Wonder Woman, DC has found her replacement in another displaced former superhero director. The Hollywood Reporter reported on Wednesday that Patty Jenkins, known for Monster, is set to takeover the film.
Jenkins has history with superhero tentpole films as she was originally supposed to helm Thor 2 for Marvel before moving on from the project and being replaced by Alan Taylor. It was reported on Monday that MacLaren left Wonder Woman over creative differences.
With her most well-known project being Monster with Charlize Theron, Jenkins does not have any other feature film credits with most of her work being in television with Arrested Development, Entourage, and The Killing. That hasn’t been a huge hurdle though for recent directors in superhero movies with Anthony and Joe Russo making the jump from TV to movies with...

All your favorite shows are coming back to life! Well, not all your favorites. Despite the recent revivals of The Comeback, Twin Peaks, Arrested Development and Veronica Mars, there are still some beloved shows that are still kicking around just asking to be brought back. And others that should just really be left in the pop culture pantheon of great TV shows that only live on via Netflix, DVD or syndication. Below, we broke down why your favorite show should return from the dead or why they should remain a fond memory. The digital age has changed television dramatically within the past two decades. With the advent of cable channels, home video media, dish on demand and the internet, the average TV viewer has a variety of venues to access television programs. With all these ways to access television shows, the viewing audience has become more aware of repetitive story lines, inconsistency in character development and continuity errors. In short, these advances in technology have made for a more sophisticated casual television viewer, therefore allowing for the progression of serialized storytelling.
Today’s television writers have a landscape to develop complex narratives beyond the limitations of the episodic format, and now that audiences have better accessibility to these shows, there is a higher demand for serialized storytelling where there wasn’t one before.
Although there have been many television shows that have contributed to the overall progression of the modern serialized television series,...

Jack Shephard was originally supposed to be played by Michael Keaton, and he was going to die in Lost’s pilot episode. After his death, the first to be killed by the smoke monster (that honor ended up going to the plane’s pilot, played by Greg Grunberg), Kate would take over as the leader and primary protagonist. This would have been surprising because it would buck conventions, killing off the heroic white male leader so that the female could take over.
J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof quickly changed their minds about Jack’s death, Keaton backed off so that Matthew Fox could become the character we all know, and the rest is history. Kate became just another supporting character in the show’s massive ensemble. The first thing we see in the actual pilot episode is Jack’s eye, and from that point on we stay mostly with him.

The badass teen private detective who made her name on Us TV is making a triumphant return in a Kickstarter-funded movie. So how did director Rob Thomas cope with the fans' (Aka the Marshmallows) expectations?
Once, Rob Thomas was a high-school teacher. One of his jobs was to oversee the yearbook committee, mostly teenage girls. The conversations he overheard – he had soon become mere wallpaper to his pupils – gave him new insight into the profound self-consciousness of adolescents. Some years later, he had the idea for a TV show about a female badass who, unlike Buffy or Alias's Sydney Bristow, didn't have awesome martial arts skills. His heroine may have been cleverer than anyone else in the room, but, more important, she didn't care what anyone else thought of her. "And for teenagers," says Thomas, "that is the best superpower."
The result was Veronica Mars, a teen private detective as...

Television is a crazy medium, even moreso than film. It’s a medium where all the big TV studios can tout a new show as groundbreaking, edgy and any other buzzwords that they have in their wheelhouse at that time. Then, with a swift blade, they cut it down. And after that death, it languishes in a field of dead cult television. Why kill a great show? The short answer is … money. The longer answer is more complex and requires a series of Venn diagrams, and frankly I don’t have the budget for that. See, the funny thing is, ratings will kill a blossoming show. Period. It doesn’t matter if the biggest world renowned critic or your mother love it, if people aren’t watching then no one should. The sad thing is, so many good shows burn out and fade away because the show is too high-concept or edgy.

Back in the spring, I wrote about the strange phenomenon of having too many good TV shows airing at the same time. The TV business tends to ease back on the throttle in the summertime, but the summer of 2013 was still the busiest I can remember. We had all of the usual suspects returning ("True Blood," "Big Brother," "So You Think You Can Dance," "Burn Notice"), but we also had Netflix continuing its push into original programming with "Orange Is the New Black" and "Arrested Development" (which debuted Memorial Day weekend), we had the biggest scripted summer hit in forever...

The 2013 Emmys will feature an homage to late Glee star Cory Monteith, our sister site Deadline has confirmed. However, “It’s too early” to know what exactly that tribute will look like, the awards show’s executive producer Ken Ehrlich shares.
“If Cory had passed away in March, we’d have had four months to look at this with a little more perspective,” he explained. “The reason we’re getting all of this discussion now is because he passed away two weeks ago. But we are going to deal with it.”

You don’t need to be told yet again you how YouTube has changed the course of our lives and modern society in just under a decade. And you certainly don’t need to be told that the landscape of television and film has been changed by the internet, what with streaming and independent distribution changing how we watch film and the fact that the likes of Netflix and Amazon are producing their own original content like House of Cards and Arrested Development.
YouTube launched Comedy Week to much fanfare recently, but it received a mixed reception since seemed like it was trying to recreate television by rehashing old favourites and promoting itself with big-name stars like Ricky Gervais and Arnold Schwarzengger. Yeah, last year's birthday came hot on the heels of "Marvel's the Avengers'" success, but in the past year he has released "Much Ado About Nothing," signed a deal that keeps him in the Marvel family for another two years, finished the first draft of "Avengers 2" after deciding that he does have another story to tell with the team, and he got a new TV show ("Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.") picked up and ready to debut. Joss Whedon found a cult following when he created Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But now he's directing Hollywood's biggest superhero movies – and Shakespeare. Emma John meets the fanboy who has turned his obsessions into box-office glory
Joss Whedon is standing in the Forbidden Planet comics store in London, surveying a row of plastic action figures. There are Gandalfs and Frodos, Batmen and Ironmen. Whedon points out the few female characters – pert young warrior princesses – all standing in the same pose: shoulders back, cleavage thrust forward. This, he explains, is the reason he resisted a Buffy doll.
Until last year, Whedon was a writer and director best known for his TV creations. Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel, were cult classics, the just-home-from-school fantasy shows that made vampires sexy long before R-Patz and Kristen mooned at each other in Twilight. There’s less television to discuss this week on the podcast, giving us more time to delve into an interesting week in drama. First we look at a couple comedies (Save Me, Inside Amy Schumer) and some reality programming (So You Think You Can Dance, The Voice), and then we dive into our week in drama. Afterwards, we spotlight this week’s fantastic episode of Orphan Black, “Unconscious Selection”, and welcome on Josh Spiegel from Mousterpiece Cinema to discuss the recently released season 4 of Arrested Development.

Get out of the sun—there’s recovering zombies, addictive serial-killer mysteries, and the Breaking Bad finale on TV. My take on what not to miss for this cool summer season. At The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "17 Shows Worth Watching This Summer," in which I round up 17 shows worth watching during the sweltering months to come, from FX's The Bridge and BBC America's Broadchurch to ABC Family's Switched at Birth and CBS's Under The Dome. (Plus, Showtime's Ray Donovan, which Should Not Be Missed.) Summer isn’t the television wasteland that it used to be. While the broadcasters are still figuring out what to do with their real estate during these lazy months (original drama? reality competitions? burn-offs?), cable channels have long known the power of airing high-profile series throughout the heat, and there is quite a lot of original programming to be...

Buffy's back! CBS has entered the pilot pickup madness, ordering six projects to series, including a father-daughter sitcom starring Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who recently headlined the CW's short-lived Ringer, as well as a new comedy starring Arrested Development's Will Arnett, whose comedy Up All Night was just canceled by NBC. Plus, Lost's Josh Holloway is set to make his return to TV (Huzzah!) and Anna Faris teams up with Two and a Half Men's Chuck Lorre for a new sitcom... Crazy Ones: Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar star as a father-duo who runs an advertising business together in this workplace comedy from David E. Kelley. James Wolk and Amanda Setton...

So, the headline is kind of misleading, but it’s exciting news nonetheless. With Arrested Development coming back from the dead in a couple weeks, Netflix sees its power in resurrecting old favorites. Or, helping old properties that never happened come to life. It shows how bold Netflix is at this point, as Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, discussed bringing Stephen King’s The Dark Tower to their website.
“I spoke to Ron about it, actually…The last time we talked about it the thing was being kicked about HBO – but it’s no longer there. Once Arrested Development gets through we’ll keep talking about it.”
He was then asked if Buffy The Vampire Slayer could be brought back: ”That’s one that’ll come up on everyone’s list. She’s a great character. If it was my property I’d do infrequent movies. There’s...

A recent conversation over at Stuff led to Netflix’s Chief Content Officer revealing the possibility of bringing back cult faves Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Twin Peaks. With the massive success of online streaming video content, Netflix has expanded, generating some stellar original programming. David Fincher’s House Of Cards and Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove to name but two.
When asked about reviving Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said:
“That’s one that’ll come up on everyone’s list. She’s a great character. If it was my property I’d do infrequent movies. There’s not enough kick-ass female characters like that.”
He offered an excited a word one response to the possibility of a new series of David Lynch’s classic Twin Peaks:
“Absolutely!”
The forever-in-development Stephen King adaptation, The Dark Tower has recently caught the eye of Ron Howard.

Netflix is enjoying high viewership for its original series "Hemlock Grove" and "House of Cards," so much so that they're looking to continue on with original programming on a grand scale by possibly resurrecting some gone too soon titles and more.
In an interview with Stuff.TV, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos was asked what other properties he'd like to see make a comeback via the service. It was recently announced that "Arrested Development" would be getting a new season via the service, and here's where things get interesting... It's no secret that "Arrested Development" creator Ron Howard has also been circling Stephen King’s "The Dark Tower" so is there any chance Netflix could pick it up? Two quick bites of news: Netflix's Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, says in an interview with Stuff that there are a number of properties he has his eye on now that Netflix is in the business of reviving shows (Arrested Development) and producing original content (Hemlock Grove). That includes Ron Howard's long-mooted adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, which has had a bumpy history reaching the screen because of the scale and budget.

Welcome to Miss American Idol, an exciting new reality series from Fox where gorgeous, talented women take the stage and sing for your votes — and then the ones with the skinniest legs advance to the finale.
Wait, that’s not an actual show? Then please someone tell me what I spent two hours watching tonight as a white-hot rage percolated through my circulatory system and turned me into the kind of cussing, fork-throwing (yes, I may have slammed cutlery into the hard wood floor), definitely-not-enjoying-myself monster you’d typically see on a show like Bad Girls Club or The Real Housewives of the Ninth Circle.

Fox hasn’t officially confirmed it, but sources close to American Idol are buzzing that Season 12 Top 4 week will be a two-theme kind of party: One-Hit Wonders and Contestant’s Choice.
The former — which topped an At&T “fan’s choice” vote — has the potential to be fantastic, as long as producers don’t try to force the contestants toward novelty hits or tired old songs that have been covered on Idol a million times before (and simply happen to qualify under the one-hit wonder header).

Say what you want about SyFy, they certainly have big designs for the future. After wooing Jamie Foxx for a horror anthology, Ronald D. Moore for Round 2, and other big time names in the television industry for a slew of high-concept (expensive) shows for the fall, SyFy is making a play for a bigger piece of the cable TV pie.
Defiance is one of the first attempts at securing a larger audience, and its 2 hour premiere garnered SyFy’s biggest premiere since Warehouse 13 in 2009. The show is tied in to a Mmorpg with over six million hours of game play so far, and the bundle together cost the network around $100 million. Clearly, Defiance has massive expectations. Does it meet them?

I hear actor Charlie Sheen has parted ways with longtime manager Mark Burg. It is unclear if the separation is permanent, but if the duo’s history is any indication, we shouldn’t bet on it. The two have had fallings-out before, most notably during Sheen’s epic spring 2011 meltdown, but they’ve reconciled. Even if Sheen is not a client of Burg’s anymore, the two remain business partners as they both serve as executive producers on Sheen’s FX comedy series Anger Management, which is 40 episodes into its 100-episode (10+90) order. I hear there were no signs of a Sheen-Burg separation on the set of the show this week, and Anger Management producers appeared unaware of any change in the duo’s relationship. Sheen performed his duties on the show until Friday when he left the set due to illness. He is slated to do The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Wednesday.

It happens all the time. We get attached to a show and for some reason, be it low ratings, high expense, departing actors, it gets cancelled. We’re left with a handful or episodes, or maybe a season or two if we’re lucky, and that’s it. Plot lines are unresolved, questions left unanswered, potential unreached.
But look at all the shows that were cancelled and then brought back, Futurama, Arrested Development, and Family Guy to name a few. Not to mention that a Veronica Mars movie was recently funded through Kickstarter solely by fans. The possibilities are growing as we have more methods to display our love for these shows in the hopes that someone will listen. So here’s to the cancelled shows of yesteryear. You may be incomplete but we still love you.
So click onward to check out my top ten favourite TV shows…that were cancelled too soon.

By now you should have heard about the Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter, or maybe you’ve already donated to it. The campaign raised over $2 million within 24 hours to meet its initial goal and the film was greenlit with marketing and distribution support from Warner Bros. If you are a fan and would like to contribute, please do so, as more money only helps make a bigger film. By the way, to all the MARShmallows out there, we have no doubt that creator Rob Thomas, cast and crew are going to give fans the film they’ve deserved after getting prematurely cancelled in 2006.
Regardless of the box office it will eventually earn in early 2014, the project is already a success. It sent a ripple in entertainment circles on how future projects could be funded. Is it a trendsetter? We’re not ready to declare that yet, but it is a game changer and if anything,...

I can't help that I'm obsessed with lists, so look out: 60 Minutes conducted a poll in tandem with Vanity Fair that asked viewers to name their favorite sitcom of all time. Here were the seven available options and the percentage of votes each garnered:
1. Seinfeld 22%
2. The Honeymooners 20%
3. Friends 16%
4. Cheers 14%
5. Arrested Development 7%
6. The Mary Tyler Moore Show 6%
7. 30 Rock 5%
Am I the only one who would rank those in the exact opposite order? It's never not alienating to see people line up and agree that your taste is diametrically opposed to theirs. My instinct is to invite all gay men under this pariah umbrella, but fine, maybe you think Seinfeld is the best too. But do you? I wonder if you do.
I know Seinfeld has long been declared the greatest sitcom ever (TV Guide ranked the Top 50 sitcoms in 2002 and Jerry came out on top), but this poll is yet another...

If there’s one type of TV character that can appeal to younger and older viewers, it’s the TV teen.
For younger audience members, TV teens are figures to whom to relate and admire. Older audience members, on the other hand, use these characters to relive the innocence and optimism of youth that somehow gets sanded down over time.
TV teens are tricky to pull off, as they can become just as obnoxious as real teens occasionally are. But if portrayed with a relatable honesty and vulnerability, they can evolve into some of the best TV characters ever.

No matter what kind of entertainment we're talking about, it's pretty clear what it takes to create a successful property in the digital realm.
The must-haves: A relatively high profile in an array of niches and subcultures, the kind of credibility that comes from having built up grass-roots support over a period of years, a cadre of peers and fans willing to help a creator do the social-media equivalent of street-team marketing, and the attention of the mainstream media.
Oh, and critical acclaim sure doesn't hurt.
With "Community," NBC had all that. Yet as a commercial entity, "Community" was pretty much a failure for the network, which publicly blew up its relationship with the show's creator, Dan Harmon, not too long ago.
Pretty smooth transition into the future of entertainment, NBC!
But leaving aside that particular kerfuffle, which isn't all NBC's fault, let's consider a bigger question: What does the...

This week, Netflix Instant added a series I’ve heard about for a long time but have never seen: Fox’s Undeclared.
The 2001 comedy stars Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up), Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express) and Charlie Hunnam (FX’s Sons of Anarchy) and was created by Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin).
The series only lasted one season, but it’s always interested me because I’ve heard it’s a sequel of sorts to NBC’s Freaks and Geeks, another one-season wonder.
There have been numerous series to only receive one season when they deserved a lot more, and their cancellations result in a TV lover’s heartbreak. This week, in honor of their untimely conclusions, I give you the Top 10 One-Season TV Wonders:
10. The Comeback (HBO)
After NBC’s Friends ended in 2004, actress Lisa Kudrow returned to TV in HBO’s 2005 comedy The Comeback.

A smorgasbord of TV news, served up in bite-sized pieces, including items on "Parks and Recreation," another "Arrested Development" return and more.
- Jean-Ralphio is back! "House of Lies" star Ben Schwartz will return to "Parks and Recreation" this season as Tom's (Aziz Ansari) endearingly annoying fellow would-be baller. He's set to appear in an episode scheduled for Nov. 1, though in what capacity remains a secret -- as does what his hair will look like this time out. [TVLine]
- The Emmys have lined up their first set of presenters. Nominees Louis C.K., Amy Poehler and Jim Parsons will present awards at the Sept. 23 ceremony, as will Ricky Gervais, Ginnifer Goodwin and Mindy Kaling. [ATAS]
- Yet another former "Arrested Development" guest star is returning for the show's revival -- or at least is angling to return. "Parenthood's" Mae Whitman says she "definitely" wants to reprise her role as Ann Veal (Who?...

Creating television is not an exact science. For every show that debuts as a fully-formed entity ("The Shield," "The Sopranos," "Arrested Development"), there are plenty that struggle early on but improve dramatically over time, usually when they return for their second seasons, having had a few months to examine what worked and what didn't in the debut year. For some shows ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Breaking Bad," "Parks and Recreation"), that creative leap taken in year 2 is one that sticks, while for others (say, "Chuck") it represents an early peak, where all the elements consistently click in a way that...
