Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will return in person this fall, welcoming local and international guests from Sept. 8 to 18.
Also returning in person are TIFF’s networking and celebratory events, including the opening night party, industry conference, filmmaker dinners, industry networking events, press and programmers events and tribute awards gala. The move follows two straight years of hybrid or largely digital festivals, a concession that TIFF, like many other film gatherings, made for public health reasons as Covid raged. In 2021, TIFF did host live screenings, but at reduced capacity, and the festival had far fewer international attendees. Clearly, this edition will look much more like pre-pandemic versions of TIFF unless variants spoil those plans.
The festival also announced the addition of five new film curators to its programming team. Leading the team is Robyn Citizen, who has been appointed TIFF’s director of festival programming and Cinematheque. Andréa Picard has...

Films from Asia are struggling to compete at this year’s major film festivals. That’s not necessarily a reflection on their artistic merits, but a symptom of a painful 2021 divide between the film industry’s East and West.
A full-sized Cannes festival was noticeably light on Asian selections, and the same goes for the Venice Film Festival. Toronto has cut its overall lineup by two thirds and its extensive Asian program has shrunk in proportion.
Locarno’s selection leaned the other way and assembled a strong Southeast Asia selection, along with its Open Doors industry program, and saw its Golden Leopard top prize awarded to Thailand’s “A Useful Ghost.”
The heart of Asia’s festival troubles is a combination of Covid-related travel restrictions and a mistrust of hybrid and online festivals by rights holders and distributors. A change of direction by the Chinese industry adds another, smaller complication.

Here we go again. Festival time. Why do we put ourselves through this? All so we can make semi-coherent pronouncements on The Year in Film? So that when the Oscar bloggers come crawling out of their holes each September, hoping to see their gold-plated shadows, we can say that we were somewhere else, appreciating the true art of the medium? Why not? Someone has to hold fast against the all-consuming law of the market. Wavelengths is as good a place as any to make a stand in favor of the contrarianism of beauty and rage. But how do you define a year in cinema? Each year, film festivals, both major and minor, go through hundreds upon hundreds of selections and submissions, taking into account all sorts of criteria: relative importance of the films in question; the local taste of the audience; due diligence to certain studios, donors, and sales agents...

Exclusive: Last time Tiff showcased Korean cinema was in 2002.
Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) artistic director Cameron Bailey has today announced the 2014 City To City programme will focus on Seoul, South Korea.
“Seoul is one of the most exciting film cities now. There are always new interesting films and directors from a number of different levels from very commercial to arthouse,” said Bailey.
The last time Tiff showcased Korean cinema was in 2002 with programme strand Harvest: South Korean Renaissance.
“There’s obviously been a huge change in those 12 years. Directors like Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan-wook are now working internationally. Anyone who follows international cinema knows Korean filmmakers take challenges and push limits,” said Bailey.
“I think 12 years ago that was still new and we were introducing our audiences to the fact that this was happening. Now they want more and are hungry for what’s new.”
Bailey will be programming eight recent feature films for the...

"After an elderly maid for a Hong Kong film producer has a stroke, he finds a nursing home for her to move into," begins Shelly Kraicer in Cinema Scope. "With that simple premise, based on the real life story of producer Roger Lee and his actual family's amah Chung Chun-tao (aka Ah Tao), Hong Kong director Ann Hui has crafted one of her greatest films. This low-key masterpiece of almost documentary realism features big stars and non-professionals: king of Hong Kong cinema Andy Lau plays Roger and the remarkable actress Deannie Yip plays Ah Tao, while the home's elderly residents play themselves…. Ann Hui's brilliant filmography extends back to 1979, and this new work instantly earns pride of place as one of its glories."
"A Simple Life is loaded with cameos by celebrities from Hong Kong's action-packed cinema including martial-arts legends Tsui Hark and Sammo Hung," notes Neil Young in the Hollywood Reporter.
