The uncommonly adventurous Maggie Gyllenhaal hits a new career peak with The Kindergarten Teacher, compelling us to understand a woman who maybe doesn’t understand herself. That’s an apt description of her Lisa Spinelli, a Staten Island wife and mother who’s been teaching kindergarten for 20 years — the kind of person whose soft voice barely disguises the fact that she’s screaming inside. Lisa has dreams of being a poet, an artistic calling whose wheels have come off as the culture dives further into digital, short-attention-span freefall. She has...

There are some movies that you come away from knowing that you liked it, loved the way it was shot and knew the acting was good, but something just seemed to be missing. These are the ones you have to take the time to step back from and think about what you have just seen, what it was trying to tell you and what you take away from it. This is exactly what I found with A Most Violent Year.
At first I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was about the film which focuses on 1981 a year that saw a spike in criminal activity in New York, but the answer lies in...

Writer-director Jeff Lipsky's "Molly's Theory of Relativity" has gone to his new company Adopt Films for Us distribution, set for March 2013. The film about "the economy, how we value and measure the pride we take in what we choose to do for a living, the unbreakable bonds of family, and the notion that death is merely a relative thing" stars Sophia Takal, Lawrence Michael Levine, Reed Birney, Daisy Tahan and Rebecca Schull. Nick Athas and Inna Braude produced. Lipsky says: "It was thrilling to able to write for actors ranging from eight to eighty and pure joy to be working again with Reed, Rebecca and Daisy. Shooting in the New York City is always a plus, particularly with the exceptional crew I had at my disposal, all of whom were major artistic contributors to the cause.” Adopt Films ("Nuit #1," "The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye") is also releasing...

Adopt Films has acquired all U.S. rights to Jeff Lipsky’s fifth feature film, “Molly’s Theory of Relativity.” “Molly’s Theory of Relativity” is a sexy, funny, surreal, and devastating portrait of a beautiful twenty-eight-year-old astronomer who, having unexpectedly lost her job, is poised to make perhaps the first reckless decision of her life. Her story unfolds during an eighteen hour period, on Halloween. Providing counsel on the fateful day are her husband, her father-in-law, three deceased relatives, a precocious nine-year-old trick-or-treater, her grandfather from Minot, North Dakota, and a six year old neighbor, who may or may not be imaginary. “Molly’s Theory of Relativity” is about the economy, how we value and measure the pride we take in what we choose to do for a living, the unbreakable bonds of family, and the notion that death is merely a relative thing. “Molly’s Theory of Relativity” stars Sophia Takal (“Green,...

Natalie Portman’s Oscar win last week was widely expected though no less deserved. Her turn in Black Swan was a high point for the actress whose other recent role in sex buddy comedy No Strings Attached is a perfect example of the other side of the Portman coin.
I’m hoping that her forthcoming role in Don Roos’ The Other Woman, or Love and Other Impossible Things to give it the international title this poster has on it, is closer to the more serious side as that is undoubtedly where she does her best work.
Portman leads The Other Woman which also stars Lauren Ambrose, Lisa Kudrow, Scott Cohen, Charlie Tahan, Kendra Kassebaum, Daisy Tahan, Anthony Rapp and is directed by Don Roos. Trailers and previous posters can be found here.
Impa. Gotta Love them.

Cashing on the success of Black Swan, IFC Films is planning a release of The Other Woman next month. Natalie Portman stars in the drama originally titled Love and Impossible Pursuits, based off Ayelet Waldman‘s novel. Directed and adapted by Don Roos (Bounce, Happy Endings) and co-starring Lisa Kudrow, Daisy Tahan, and Lauren Ambrose, the film premiered at Toronto International Film Festival back in 2009. We have the first trailer below via Yahoo and poster via Vulture.
It all has a very been-there-done-that vibe, and with better-looking films like Rabbit Hole covering similar territory, this doesn’t exactly grab me. I did get a chance to see an early screening of Natalie Portman’s other January release, No Strings Attached, and for a romantic-comedy it isn’t half-bad. At least we have that, Thor, and Your Highness to look forward to in Portman’s 2011 filmography.

It may be bank holidays here in the UK but that doesn’t stop the Us releasing new posters and trailers (darn them!). Earlier today, we saw the new poster that Jamie put up for Natalie Portman’s new movie, The Other Woman and now IFC have released the new trailer for the movie which also stars Lauren Ambrose, Lisa Kudrow, Scott Cohen, Charlie Tahan, Kendra Kassebaum, Daisy Tahan, Anthony Rapp and is directed by Dan Roos.
The new trailer comes from Yahoo and as you’ll see from the trailer, this movie is going to be a tear-jerker! When will Natalie Portman win an Oscar? She’s just so awesome in everything she does!
No UK release date for this one yet but we’ll keep you posted.

Incentive Film Entertainment, via Vulture, have released the debut poster for The Other Woman, formally titled Love and Other Impossible Pursuits.
Directed by Dan Roos (The Opposite of Sex), The Other Woman stars Natalie Portman, Lauren Ambrose, Lisa Kudrow, Scott Cohen, Charlie Tahan, Kendra Kassebaum, Daisy Tahan and Anthony Rapp.
Based on Ayelet Waldman novel of the same name, the film centers on a lawyer (Portman) who wins her married boss away from his wife (Kudrow), but must deal with the consequences, including her newly acquired stepson and unexpected tragedy.
The Other Woman will be released in the Us on February 4, 2011. A UK release has yet to be announced.

[1] IFC Films has released the movie trailer for The Other Woman, a film adaptation of Ayelet Waldman's novel "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits". The comedy/drama stars Natalie Portman and "details the story of a woman's difficult relationship with her stepson." The film co-stars Lisa Kudrow (Friends), Daisy Tahan (13, Nurse Jackie) and Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under). Directed and adapted by Don Roos, writer/director of two underrated movies Bounce and Happy Endings, and the man who wrote the screenplay adaptation of Marley & Me. I find it slightly suspicious that both the poster [2] and trailer were released on the same day it was revealed [3] publicly that Portman is pregnant and engaged to Benjamin Millepied, who served as choreographer on Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan and was Portman's dance partner in the film. Almost seems like this indie film was trying to latch on to the gossipy news break. The...

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson have made quite a large body of movies together. Little Fockers, the latest entry in the Meet the Parents series is, well, it's another of them. The 2000 movie Meet the Parents was a fun, if not high-brow, examination of the tribulations when in-laws meet for the first time. Meet the Fockers, in 2004, continued with the established formula of "Jack doesn't trust Greg, Jack spies on Greg, Jack takes things out of context, Step 3 Profit." But at least it added Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand as Greg's wonderfully zany, new-age sex-therapist title-card parents. This latest entry in the series throws any pretense out the window that the movieis about anything other than the love story between Stiller's Greg Focker and Robert De Niro's Jack Byrnes.
Except for the family name, it would have been more descriptive to call this entry in the series "Little Afterthoughts.

Here we are back again in Focker-dom, that wonderful place of crushing comic awkwardness, painful slapstick and the no less excruciating specter of great actors slumming for paychecks. Surely, the world did not need Little Fockers, this second sequel to the somewhat overrated Meet the Parents, but like an obligatory stocking-stuffer it has arrived – to cash in for Christmas – and must be dealt with. The gold star gang returns: Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson, Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman apparently could not pass up the chance to remain tied to a series that’s grossed over $800 million worldwide. Paul Weitz – director of solid dramedies About a Boy and In Good Company – takes the helm. And what all the talent brings is a tame, predictable comedy rife with the same tired elements that abounded in films one and two (Meet the Fockers). Expecting some sort of seismic shift in tone and content...

After seeing “Little Fockers”, I have come to the conclusion that this franchise must end now. The ideas have run out and now they are picking over the carcass. “Meet the Parents” was a funny movie about a guy who was meeting his future in-laws and was worried about making a bad impression. It was relatable even with the most far out scenes. Robert De Niro had just dipped his toes in the comedy pool one year prior with “Analyze This”. It was a relatively new experience seeing De Niro mine for laughs after many years in the drama field. Now everything looks tired and worn out. Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) is an administrator after years toiling away as a nurse in the emergency room. He is living a comfortable life with his wife Pam (Teri Polo) and their two 5-year-old twins Samantha (Daisy Tahan) and Henry (Colin Baiocchi)...

It.s time for you to meet the little Fockers, Colin Baiocchi and Daisy Tahan. This year's holiday movie "Little Fockers" has created an atmosphere of family reunion at the world premiere held at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City on December 15. Despite their on-screen feud, Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller looked very friendly on the red carpet, sandwiching the new addition to the comedy franchise, Jessica Alba.
Coming with her husband Cash Warren, Alba had to leave him for a while as more men from "Little Fockers", like Owen Wilson and Dustin Hoffman, joined her to pose for cameras. Another beauty Teri Polo, meanwhile, opted to share the frame with her on-screen kids Daisy Tahan and Colin Baiocchi.
Actress Blythe Danner, scriptwriter John Hamburg and director Paul Weitz were also there to support the special screening. Meanwhile, the celebrity guest list had Kevin Hart among the attendees.
In this follow-up to "Meet the Fockers", Greg has married Pamela Byrnes-Focker and together they have five-year old twins.

I really want Chazz Palminteri to be my therapist. To have him nod, squint his eyes, stare directly at me and offer advice on how to spot the good people in my life, like “Sonny” from A Bronx Tale would have done. He’s very successful, has been married for forty years to his beautiful wife Angelina (Maria Tucci), and has two lovely daughters.

The most drawn-out comedy franchise of recent memory will finally bring its third installment to theaters during the holiday season. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the "Little Fockers."
The principals -- Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Teri Polo, Blythe Danner and Owen Wilson -- are all back for the latest edition in the series, which began 10 years ago with "Meet the Parents." Jack and Dina (De Niro and Danner) are visiting Greg and Pam (Stiller and Polo) for the holidays to see their grandkids (played by Daisy Tahan and Colin Baiocchi).
Comedy of embarrassment ensues, especially when Jack samples a new erectile-dysfunction drug Greg is marketing.
Barbra Streisand will once again appear as Greg's mom, while Jessica Alba, Laura Dern and Harvey Keitel are new to the cast (Dustin Hoffman, however, didn't return as Greg's dad). The movie is scheduled for release in December.
So what do you think of the trailer?...

It’s official. Nurse Jackie Season 3 is a go. Showtime has just signed on for a third season of both Nurse Jackie and the United States of Tara. Multiple award nominations, stellar casts and an excellent reception to the season 2 premieres of both shows were more than enough to nudge Showtime forward in their decision. Nurse Jackie Season 2 began with the return of Eddie Walzer (Paul Schulze) to All Saints, via drug overdose. It’s clear that this season will further explore Jackie’s (Edie Falco) love triangle, or quadrangle if you count Dr. Coop (Peter Facinelli). Does this spell disaster for Edie’s seemingly “happy home?” The Peyton household has already seen changes with Mackenzie Aladjem taking over the roll of Fiona from Daisy Tahan. Hopefully, we won’t lose the Peyton family all together if Edie’s relationship persists. Unlike shows like The Unit, which tapered off when...

Nurse Jackie is coming back for Season 2 on March 22 at 10Pm. After the season one finale, fans will be wondering what the future holds for Jackie Peyton's (Edie Falco) sordid marriage. Jackie's hospital lover, Eddie Walzer (Paul Schulze), had come face to face with Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) at his bar. While Kevin served Eddie drinks, Eddie admitted to sleeping with a married woman. Eddie may not have said Jackie's name, but the plot is in motion to see if Eddie will let this love affair slide. We saw his drunken tirade at All Saints, so rest assured this affair is not over. Sadly, Kevin still feels his marriage is a match-made-in-heaven and recently purchased an expensive ring for Jackie. The people who will suffer the most will be Kevin and Jackie's daughters, Grace (Ruby Jerins) and Fiona (Daisy Tahan). If marital arguments erupt, we'll definitely see ...

Though not as good as last week's installment as far as laughs go, the penultimate episode of Nurse Jackie's first season was still one of the better things on television this week. However, like all shows featuring adultry, it's all got to unravel eventually — and for Jackie, that's quickly happening.
The episode opened with Jackie spending time with her family. Kevin and Fiona have a "secret plan" for Jackie while she takes Grace to her tap class. Fiona almost spills the beans, but is shushed quickly by Kevin. For such a small performance, Daisy Tahan does a wonderful job as Jackie's cute youngest daughter.
While at tap class, Jackie gets into an argument with a fellow mom because her daughter is running into Grace. Jackie tries to tell the girl to back off, despite Grace's pleas, eventually getting into a verbal fight with the girls mother, "saying the f word" to her,...

On June 2, 2009, Showtime held the Nurse Jackie Red Carpet Premiere at the Le Parker Meridien Hotel and Director's Guild of America Tower. Several celebrities made it out for the premiere, including show stars Anna Deavere Smith and Paul Schulze, as well as LL Cool J, Steve Buscemi and many more. Even though Edie Falco was the night's star, Daisy Tahan, who plays Nurse Jackie Peyton's daughter Fiona Peyton, won the hearts of the carpet. They say a party isn't official until someone is caught having sex (which happened at the Dexter Season 3 Premiere Party at Showtime's Metropolitan House in Gramercy Park) or someone is sent to the hospital. During the Premiere After Party, Merritt Wever, who plays Zoey Brakow, Jackie's nurse in training, rushed to the lower level of the party exclaiming, "I think someone is like having a heart attack." At first, we didn't know if this was real.
