In case you didn’t know, animation directors are also auteurs. According to Yahoo Finance, the global animation market reached more than $400 billion at the end of 2023. That was up from $391 billion one year before. And yet, animated projects are not automatically covered by the WGA, are separate from the DGA, and are consistently overlooked for their filmmaking achievements.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the directing trio of Sony Animation’s animated box office smash “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” tell Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that there are some critically needed changes in Hollywood.

Kevin Williamson has set an overall deal with Universal Television, where he is developing four new series: adaptations of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film “Rear Window,” Ruth Ware’s 2022 book “The It Girl” and David Fincher’s 1997 film “The Game,” as well as an original series titled “The Waterfront.”

Exclusive: Prolific TV and film writer-creator Kevin Williamson has set up shop at Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. Under an overall deal for Williamson and his production banner Outerbanks Entertainment, which was finalized in December, he already has four high-profile projects in development at the TV studio that run the gamut from thriller to murder mystery to a family crime drama.

Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly have anchored the show since August, after several lineup changes since its debut in the fall of 2022. Kasie Hunt’s 5 a.m. Et show, known as Early Start, will expand an hour and take on the CNN This Morning title.
Changes will go into effect later this month.
CNN News Central, meanwhile, will move to 7 a.m. Et and run until 10 a.m. Et, with anchors John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner.
