I've always wondered how movie and TV productions pull off scenes with chest compressions. I've taken quite a few first aid courses in my day, and one of the first things students learn about giving CPR is that you have to push down hard. It takes a lot of force to mimic the blood flow of a heartbeat, and if done right — as "Better Call Saul" star Bob Odenkirk has mentioned when talking about his harrowing 2021 heart attack — it can break a person's ribs. Or, if you're in the medical fairy-tale world of "9-1-1: Lone Star," it can apparently break a person's whole frozen chest as it did in a gross and darkly funny clip that recently went viral.
The bottom line is that chest compressions are no joke, and the team behind HBO's hit show "Succession" apparently found a creative way to show them on screen while keeping actors safe in a recent episode.

While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

After making history last year by becoming the first streaming service to win Best Drama Series for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Hulu has its sights set on another first: a Best Limited Series victory for “The Looming Tower.” Based on Lawrence Wright‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction book, the show recounts the events leading up to the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Gold Derby spoke with stars Jeff Daniels, Peter Sarsgaard, Bill Camp, and Tahar Rahim, showrunner Dan Futterman, composer Will Bates, visual effects supervisor Aaron Raff, and visual effects producer Steven Weigle. Scroll down and click on any name below to be taken to their full interviews.
Daniels plays John O’Neill, the real-life FBI agent who investigated al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden in the years leading up to the attacks. The actor hadn’t read the book and didn’t know the specific historical details before taking part in the series,...

Visual effects supervisor Aaron Raff‘s top priorities for “The Looming Tower” were “accuracy and visual fidelity.” Based on Lawrence Wright‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction book, this Hulu limited series starring Jeff Daniels, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg and Bill Camp recounts the events leading up to the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Authenticity was especially important given the show’s editing style, which would often “cut from one of our visual effects shots into archival footage or news footage from the actual events.” Additionally, “the nature of these events are sensitive, and the goal was not to sensationalize or make anything look extra fantastic past the point of historical accuracy.”
