Netflix is putting toxic masculinity under the comedy microscope.
The streamer has ordered Maschi Veri, an eight-part comedy series from Italy in which four alpha male friends in their forties find themselves facing their own prejudices and the paradigms of toxic masculinity in a world that is moving towards social and gender equality. Without losing themselves, they are forced to rediscover their place in society and their relationships.
Maurizio Lastrico, Matteo Martari, Francesco Montanari and Pietro Sermonti star as the friends in the show, which is from Banijay’s Italian drama house Groenlandia. Furio Andreotti, Giulia Calenda and Ugo Ripamonti are the writers, with Groenlandia’s Matteo Rovere producing. Matteo Oleotto and Letizia Lamartire are directing.
Thony, Sarah Felberbaum, Laura Adriani, Alice Lupparelli, Corrado Fortuna and Nicole Grimaudo complete the cast. Show is slated for a 2025 launch.
For Netflix, the series is its latest out of Italy that explores contemporary masculinity.

Mixed by Erry feels like a musical piece, and rightly so, considering its subject matter has music at its center. Not wasting a single moment right from the first frame, it takes us back into the remarkable lives of three brothers who made millions by selling duplicated music cassettes in Naples, Italy, in the 80s. Its filmmaking is a prime example of a well-written script, and it is coming together through a pulsating edit. Each scene has an underlying rhythm along with a stark beginning, middle, and end, which give a feeling of little bags of songs put together. When a film starts to resonate like a piece of music, it edges on to become a feeling and gives out an experience. This harmony among the arts is impeccable, and when we look at them closely, there is a synchronous interconnection that exists between, say, a painting and a poem when at times,...

Sydney Sibilia’s latest movie on Netflix celebrates music and the joy it brings among the masses, although the approach is slightly unconventional. Truth be told, the means by which international music was brought to millions of Italians in the late ’70s and throughout the ’80s was through piracy. Mixed by Erry, tells the dramatized story of the three Frattasio brothers, led by Enrico “Erry” Frattasio, and how Erry’s love for DJing created a piracy empire. The movie shows the rise and fall of the Frattasio brothers, and we take a look at every major detail in the brothers’ lives. A special question is answered at the end. So stay tuned to find out who was the mole for the Frattasio brothers at the Sanremo music festivals in Mixed By Erry.

Banijay Buys Italy’s Groenlandia Group, Maker of ‘Romulus’ and ‘The Incredible Story of Rose Island’
Banijay has acquired control of Italy’s expanding Groenlandia Group, which is a producer on ITV’s “Romulus” skein and made recent Netflix Italian original film “The Incredible Story of Rose Island,” among other titles.
The Rome-based company, headed by directors and producers Matteo Rovere and Sydney Sibilia, has been steadily growing since its founding in 2014. Besides “Romulus” — both the film and the TV series which Rovere directed, and “Rose Island,” helmed by Sibilia, Groenlandia’s recent output also includes Leonardo D’Agostini’s widely exported soccer comedy drama “The Champion,” starring Stefano Accorsi, and Ludovico De Martino’s actioner “The Beast,” co-produced with Warner Bros. and now streaming globally on Netflix.
Groenlandia also comprises Ascent Films, founded and managed by Andrea Paris, who will keep operating in the shingle, in which it has had a majority stake since 2014. Ascent is an incubator shingle focused on identifying and establishing new talent.

Photo: 'Rose Island'/Netflix We open on an upbeat song, titles informing us that we are in 1968. A government official enters an almost dystopian-looking building to find a coughing, shivering, and desperate man. Upon asking what he wants, the man explains that he has come to petition the Council of Europe to save his island. “You bought an island?” an official asks. “No,” the shivering man replies. “I made it.” So begins ‘L'incredibile storia dell'Isola delle Rose’ (‘Rose Island’ is the English title), the incredible true story of one engineer’s quest to build his own country in the middle of the ocean. The film, directed by Sydney Sibilia (‘I Can Quit Whenever I Want’) and starring Elio Germano and Matilda De Angelis, captures the endeavors of Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa to gain true independence and freedom from the government and pursue a life unrestricted by the inconvenience of the law.

In 1968, idealistic Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa founded an independent micro nation on a tiny island he built on a platform supported by steel pylons off the coast of Rimini, Italy, outside Italian territorial waters. He named the platform — which had its own bar/restaurant, post office and radio station — the Republic of Rose Island.

"To change the world, you've got to risk a little." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an indie Italian film titled Rose Island, from filmmaker Sydney Sibilia (of the I Can Quit Whenever I Want series). This reminds me of the UK film Pirate Radio about the ship broadcasting in international waters, or about the party-on-a-homemade-raft experiment examined in the doc The Raft. An idealistic engineer builds his own island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation, drawing the world's attention. Values are tested when the Italian government declares him an enemy, but to change the world risks must be taken. This has a more light-hearted, comedic tone to it in addition to its let's-take-on-the-Italian-government boldness. Starring Elio Germano as Giorgio Rosa, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Tom Wlaschiha, Luca Zingaretti, François Cluzet, Matilda De Angelis, & Ascanio Balbo. This looks like a good story and a fun film! Take a look.

If you build it they will come. That’s the simple, idealistic, and possibly comically naive idea behind, “Rose Island,” Italian writer/director Sydney Sibilia‘s whimsical new comedy with a big-sized heart coming to Netflix in December.
