Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.
These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode features Faceless After Dark (Jenna Kanell), The Moor (Chris Cronin & Sophia La Porta) & Suitable Flesh (Joe Lynch).

While the eighties was a good time for horror movies, in the UK it was also a hard time for fans. So-called ‘Video Nasties” were banned and censorship was strict. Censor takes place during this time, and gives an insight into the question, were the people who censored these films not affected by the evil images they felt needed cutting out to protect the public?
Enid (Niamh Algar) is a film censor who takes pride in her job removing scenes she believes is too extreme for the public. When a new movie feels disturbingly familiar to her though she attempts to solve the mystery of her sister’s disappearance. Debut director Prano Bailey-Bond adapts her acclaimed short film Nasty into this feature length British horror set at the height of the panic over “video nasties”. Stylish and richly atmospheric, Censor represents a strong calling card for Bailey-Bond, who also co-wrote the script with Anthony Fletcher.
Rising star Niamh Algar plays Enid, a censor working at the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) in 1985, whose days are spent watching gory horror films and arguing with her colleagues over what needs to be cut out. When she watches a film called Don’t Go Into the Church, Enid becomes increasingly unsettled, because certain scenes trigger memories of her own repressed trauma, when her younger sister Nina suddenly disappeared while they were playing in a forest as children.

If you didn’t Meet The Blacks in 2016, they’re back this weekend in Deon Taylor’s second horror-comedy installment.
The first film was a send-up of The Purge. This one – The House Next Door: Meet The Blacks 2 — goes gothic. Star Mike Epps returns as Carl Black, about to face off with a neighbor from hell, Dr. Mamuwalde (Katt Williams). He’s a pimp who may or may not be a vampire and Carl’s got to figure out what he’s up to in the middle of the night before it’s too late for him and his family.
“In 2016, I made this little movie that cost $900,000. We put it out there ourselves, independently, cut our own trailers, did our own marketing,” Taylor told Deadline. It made $9.1 million. His credits since include Fatale and Black and Blue, “but everywhere I would go, people would say, “Are you going...

Sundance Film Festival: London has revealed that “Zola” and “Coda” will be among the 2021 lineup, when the festival returns to Picturehouse Central next month.
“Coda” — an acronym meaning “Child of Deaf Adults” — features Marlee Matlin (“The West Wing”) and 19-year-old Emilia Jones (“Locke & Key”) navigating their relationship, while “Zola” is based on a 148-tweet viral Twitter thread from 2015 by Aziah “Zola” Wells. It stars Taylor Paige (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) and Riley Keough (“Max Max: Fury Road”) and will close the 4-day festival.
Edgar Wright’s rockumentary “The Sparks Brothers,” described as a “musical odyssey,” opens the festival on July 29.
Other feature film offerings, which have been selected from the longer line-up shown at the Sundance Film Festival, include “The Nest,” starring Jude Law (“Sherlock Holmes”), animation “Cryptozoo,” which features Lake Bell (“BoJack Horseman”) and Michael Cera (“Arrested Development”), and documentary “Writing With Fire,” about a female-run Indian newspaper, which...

"You'd be surprised what the human brain can edit out when it can't handle the truth..." Magnet Pictures has debuted the first full trailer for the British horror film Censor, marking the feature directorial debut of editor / filmmaker Prano Bailey-Bond. This initially premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, earning mixed reviews - Zofia wrote a positive review of it for the site. After viewing a strangely familiar "video nasty" for her job, Enid, a meticulous film censor, sets out to solve the past mystery of her sister's disappearance, embarking on a quest that dissolves the line between fiction and reality. It's set back in a different time in the UK when horrible horror films were edited by censors, and the plot is about one censor who gets sucked into the videos' darkness. Niamh Algar stars as Enid, joined by Michael Smiley, Nicholas Burns, Vincent Franklin, Sophia La Porta,...

The premise of Prano Bailey-Bond’s Sundance Midnight selection opener is so strong that it’s little wonder the film can’t quite live up — or perhaps down — to it: In a Thatcher’s Britain riven by tabloid-fueled “video nasty” hysteria, a young woman working for the national censorship board is assessing a horror flick, when it triggers sudden flashbacks to a traumatic, amnesiac episode in her own life. Given the ongoing debates around censorship — and its trendier 2020s companion, “cancellation” — and the relationship between screen violence and its real-life counterpart, not to mention the grungy exploitation aesthetic of the no-budget films it references, “Censor” dangles the prospect of topical, ticklish provocation that will prove offensive to some sensibilities. And offense, in a time of pandemic numbness, is tantalizing in itself: at least you’re feeling something.

What makes romantic comedies successful?
The outline of a meet-cute moment, a sudden realization that the potential couple cannot be together, a sweeping grand gesture, and a moving speech proving their love true while rendering the obstacle bunk generally delivers the goods.
The whole shebang also has to feel accessible to viewers even when it's otherwise far-fetched, and that's notably done through characters so well-written they appeal to a little piece of everyone.
Inserting yourself into the story is crucial; after all, what fun is it if you can't imagine yourself playing one of the parts?
Four Weddings and a Funeral comes from Mindy Kaling. You know her best for creating and starring in The Mindy Project. She knows her way around humor and romance.
Surely, appealing to a broader audience drove her adaptation of the classic film, Four Weddings and a Funeral, into a series with a diverse cast.

After many were ready to proclaim their untimely death, romantic comedies have resurrected with a vengeance. “Crazy Rich Asians” was a cultural and box office sensation, and Netflix has struck gold with a series of low-stakes movies that subsequently created an entire cottage industry that runs on earnest charm and flirty banter. Combine that burgeoning success with Hollywood’s beloved “everything old is new again” ethos and it was probably only a matter of time before we got something like Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” a shiny new adaptation of one of the most iconic romantic comedies of all time.
The limited anthology series from Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton — the team behind “The Mindy Project,” a sitcom love letter to the rom-com genre — isn’t a reboot of Richard Curtis’ 1994 film. It rather just uses its premise of a group of friends weathering four weddings and a...

Hulu’s “Four Weddings and A Funeral” begins the exact same way as the 1994 film, with a madly panicked “Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.” dash out of the house by someone who egregiously overslept.
But from that point forward, Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton’s show takes on a life of its own. The titular four weddings and a funeral will happen, of course, and there are plenty of homages to the rom-com classic sprinkled throughout the show, but the story that unfolds bears little resemblance to the Hugh Grant-Andie MacDowell dorks-in-love Best Picture nominee.

You’ll be happy to know, Four Weddings and a Funeral fanatics, that Hulu’s adaptation of the beloved British rom-com does in fact open with its main character suddenly waking up and shouting the word “F—k!” repeatedly. Aside from that winking homage, though, the new Four Weddings — debuting Wednesday, July 31 on the streamer; I’ve seen the first five episodes — isn’t actually a straight rehash of the Hugh Grant/Andie MacDowell film we know and love, but rather, Fargo-style, a new tale with new characters told in the same vein. And while it might not quite reach the heights of the original,...

Hulu previewed its revamped version of rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral with a breezy, snarky first trailer. Mindy Kaling and writer Matt Warburton (Community, The Mindy Project) co-wrote the pilot for the upcoming miniseries based on the 1994 film of the same name starring Hugh Grant.
The clip follows Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel), a political communications director from New York who flies to London for a friend’s wedding. There, she reconnects with three old friends and becomes entangled in their personal crises — from reignited love affairs to social and political scandals.

Four Weddings and a Funeral is coming to Hulu later this month, and it looks like a charming dramedy that is sure to be a hit.
The series is an anthology drama, with the first season spanning ten episodes.
Instead of the binge model adopted by various other Hulu originals, Four Weddings and a Funeral will unspool weekly from July 31.
It follows "four American friends — Maya, Craig, Ainsley, and Duffy — who reunite for a fabulous London wedding."
"But after a bombshell at the altar throws their lives into turmoil, they must weather a tumultuous year of romance and heartbreak."

"Relationships are forged and broken, political scandals exposed, London social life lampooned, love affairs ignited and doused, and of course, there are four weddings...and a funeral."
It is based on the 1994 movie of the same name.

When Missandei plummeted from that wall during the final season of “Game of Thrones,” audiences didn’t know she’d be resurrected so quickly — and in the form of a romantic comedy on Hulu. If only Daenerys had known her friend would be back so soon, and leading her very own Mindy Kaling show, maybe the finale of “Game of Thrones” would have turned out better for everyone.
The actress is now flexing her comedy chops in a series based on the classic 1994 romantic comedy starring Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant, “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” Written by Richard Curtis and directed by Mike Newell, the original follows a group of clever friends over five social occasions as one reluctant couple falls in love.

Mindy Kaling wrote Hulu’s miniseries adaptation of Four Weddings and A Funeral, premiering on the streaming service this summer. Kaling was in a Conversation With Nancy Meyers at the Produced By Conference, and Meyers asked Kaling about her adaptation.
Kaling may be the biggest fan of the movie directed by Mike Newell and written by Richard Curtis. It was her admiration for the film that made her create an entirely different adaptation.
“I was approached [by MGM] about doing an adaptation, a miniseries adaptation of his movie, which I think Richard Curtis’s movie is a perfect comedy with the best cast,” Kaling said. “At first I thought, ‘Why would I ever do it?’ I was thinking about it and I thought, well, you know, if I was going to do this, because I love the world, I love the world of the movie that makes you fall in love with London,...
