Soon after the release of the first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, it was reported that the second season would not have the same actors. A source claimed that Maya Erskine and Donald Glover will not be coming back, and the series will continue with new faces. Naturally, many fans were disappointed by the news and thought it was the end of yet another good series because of bureaucracy.

Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot was released earlier this year to surprisingly good reviews. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the show, created by Glover along with Francesca Sloane, followed two spies who are partnered up as a married couple while on a mission. The show was renewed for a second season recently.
While the show’s second-season renewal was met with fanfare, rumors began to float about Glover and Erskine being dropped from the show. However, showrunner Sloane debunked the rumor and mentioned that the cliffhanger from the season finale still stands and that the rumors were untrue.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. There are dream jobs, and then there are dream jobs. Acting seems like one of the more potentially fun dreams, especially when someone gets cast in a major franchise. Who among us hasn't imagined getting to be a part of "Star Wars," "Star Trek," the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or whatever movie or television series makes our hearts beat faster? Talk about living the dream. Heck, sometimes those dreams can even be shared, with friends or family members getting to live vicariously through the actor. In the case of actor Maya Erskine, who recently starred as one half of the spy duo "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on Prime, one particularly intense "Star Wars" fan in her family even (jokingly) threatened to disown her if she didn't take a role on the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

What would benefit from a “Shōgun”-less limited field? And what would be hurt by a “Shōgun”-filled drama field? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the FX series’ possible category shift, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s” return without the Mr. and Mrs. Smith we know (probably) and more.
Speculation has crescendoed in the past week about “Shōgun” moving from limited to drama, capped off by the report that Hiroyuki Sanada has inked a new deal to reprise his role as Toranaga in a possible second season. FX has not confirmed or denied, but the pieces are coming together for a renewal. If it does go drama, the show would easily become the Best Drama Series favorite, which means we could have a second year in a row of three shows dominating the three genres with “Shōgun” in drama, “The Bear” in comedy and “Baby Reindeer” in limited.

Very rarely in the history of film and television has there ever been a project so unbelievably good that critics and audiences feared the studio rebooting, renewing, or green-lighting a sequel out of it. Mr. & Mrs. Smith used to be one of those films that struck fear in the fansʼ hearts when Amazon commissioned a series adaptation from the iconic Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt movie.

It does not help that the Season 2 update from Amazon Studios also comes with news of Donald Glover and Maya Erskine retiring from their leading roles.

Amazon’s first foray into the upfront events has seen a lot of announcements this morning. Earlier, it was announced that Nicolas Cage will be reprising his Spider-Man Noir character for the live-action show Noir. Then, one of Amazon’s biggest shows, The Boys, would get a surprising early fifth-season renewal. It was also reported that the hit show with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, will be getting a second season, only without Donald Glover and Maya Erskine.
Deadline now reports that another announcement has been made for a future project with the streamer. Amazon issued a series order for a new TV adaptation of the popular Tomb Raider video game. Jen Salke, Head of Amazon & MGM Studios, has teased that it will be an “epic” and “globe-trotting” series. The show has been developed and will be written by Fleabag and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Amazon’s adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith put a twist on the original Doug Liman film and the show, which premiered earlier this year, would become one of Prime Video’s top five new series debuts ever in terms of total U.S. viewers. The series would get the greenlight for a second season at Prime Video; however, Variety is reporting that the first season’s stars, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, are not expected to return. Amazon would decline to comment on the matter and reps for both actors have not immediately responded to the news.

After very positive reviews and a growing fanbase, Amazon’s reimagining Mr. & Mrs. Smith has officially been renewed for a second season at the streaming service, which is definitely great news. The first season ended on February 2, 2024, so this renewal is quite quick, as it came after just three and a half months (more or less). The series has been described as a reimaging of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but with a different take on the story and the whole concept. The first season starred Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the titular married couple who lead very different lives in reality.

It’s official: Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be back on the case.
Amazon kicked off its inaugural meeting with Madison Avenue ad buyers Tuesday with a slew of announcements, including news that the action series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine has been renewed for a second season.
A reimagining of the 2005 feature that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Glover co-created the series with his Atlanta colleague Francesca Sloane, with the latter returning as showrunner for season two. It’s unclear if Glover and Erskine will return to star as Amazon has not formally confirmed any casting for the newly ordered season.
The series was originally poised to star Glover alongside Fleabag favorite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with the Star Wars duo also serving as co-creators. But, as Glover explained in a THR cover story, the friends disagreed on a larger concept for the reimagined Smith and agreed to part ways.

One down. Three to go.
That’s how we meet mixed-race master of the sword Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) in Blue Eye Samurai — in the midst of her quest for vengeance on her four potential fathers. All of whom were the only white men in 17th-century Edo-period Japan during the time of her birth.
Blue Eye Samurai takes place in an era when Japan’s borders were closed to the outside world so citizens would never see a face that wasn’t Japanese (except in rare cases of illegal trade). Because of Mizu’s inherited blue eyes, she’s treated as if she’s “less than human,” “pitiable,” “monstrous,” and a “creature of shame.” And that cannot stand. As a woman, she wouldn’t be allowed to pursue her enemies. So she disguises herself as a man, ready to inflict her justice by whatever means necessary.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are forces to be reckoned with together in Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith. But when they have to face off against each other, things really heat up.
Created by Glover and Francesca Sloane — the two previously collaborated on the hit FX series Atlanta — Mr. and Mrs. Smith follows two strangers who are paired as a married couple as they both begin new careers as spies. Known as John and Jane Smith, they are forced to get close to one another as they face the world’s criminal underbelly together. Throughout the eight-episode series, Glover and Erskine are part of this delicate dance between strangers, not knowing how close one can get or if they can trust one another. As their bond grows, they evolve into a butt-kicking duo who eventually fall in love and, as always, that’s when the stakes are highest.

This holiday season is one where the offspring of iconic Hollywood families come together, apparently.
“Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” which is set to debut in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, stars Francesca Scorsese and Sawyer Spielberg, two film stars in their own rite who hail from respective auteurs Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
Decade-plus indie staple Michael Cera leads the latest feature directed by Tyler Taormina; Cera also produces the ensemble family dramedy that marks Taormina’s follow-up to his 2019 coming-of-age comedy “Ham on Rye.”
Set during one Christmas Eve, a family gathers for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home. As the night wears on and generational tensions arise, one of the teenagers sneaks out with her friends to claim the wintry suburb for her own, per the official synopsis. In the ever-evolving landscape of television where reboots are normalized, Mr. and Mrs. Smith emerges as a refreshing take on established material. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and helmed by co-creator Francesca Sloane, the series was highlighted at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event, where the duo delved into the creative process behind the innovative adaptation.
The Prime Video series follows two strangers who are recruited by a mysterious organization to act as married spies named John and Jane Smith. This setup paves the way for high-stakes espionage entangled with evolving personal dynamics.
As Erskine put it on the panel, “The couple must work through missions as their espionage skills, and developing relationship, are put to the test as they try not to get killed in the process.”
One might wonder how Erskine and Glover fostered believable chemistry on screen. Erskine, on the panel with Sloane, shared a pivotal moment.

Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”
“The Curse,” created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, follows a newly married couple (Stone and Fielder) who host an HGTV show while trying to conceive a baby and navigate a curse. Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.
Beyond that, the series had its premiere delayed repeatedly,...

You can finally put your mind at ease knowing why a sequel to this classic romantic comedy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, starring two renowned actors, who later became a real-life couple, was never made.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt appeared as Jane and John, two highly skilled assassins posing as an average suburban couple, in Doug Liman’s 2005 flick. The dramatic real-life romance between its two stars made this 20th-century Fox film famous—or infamous, perhaps (for the offscreen romance headlines). The Smiths were thrown into an unexpected adventure when they found out that they were both spies and had been given orders to kill each other because they worked for different agencies.

In 2010, Jolie disclosed that attempts had been made by “people” to reunite her and the actor (whom she would later marry in 2014) for a sequel to the 2005 movie.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the drama field, which has lots of open slots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve saved the drama long enough. To misappropriate a classic line from one of my favorite comedies for purposes of this column: Are we having fun yet? Once home to “Succession,” “Better Call Saul” and “The Last of Us” among other bangers, this year’s drama category feels somewhat lighter by comparison. There is no real frontrunner, at least in the way we’ve been used to here, so that leaves “The Crown” — three years removed from its Emmy sweep but with a demonstrably less-loved season — and “The Morning Show” at the top of the predictions charts. Sure? I could...

I love a twisted party-horror flick like Talk to Me, Bodies Bodies Bodies, or the incredibly underrated +1 (aka Plus One but not the Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine movie), which might explain my adoration of Greg Jardin’s It’s What’s Inside. You might recognize the title for its astounding $17 million sale to Netflix out of Utah’s Sundance Film Festival, which is money well spent for the streamer. Jardin writes, directs, and edits a shifty yet cleanly conveyed science fiction thriller that feels akin to the functional simplicity of Shane Carruth’s Primer meets a boozy [redacted as per filmmaker and studio wishes]. Filmmakers who’ve tackled similarly fantastical concepts have stumbled over needlessly complicated narratives, while Jardin focuses on digital-age comedics and dire consequences that entertain with ease.
We first meet struggling couple Shelby (Brittany O'Grady) and Cyrus “The Virus” (James Morosini): stagnant, physically starved "lovers" who get into heated arguments about when to have sex.

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.
Carroll O’Connor is thus far the only male performer to have achieved this, having pocketed a record-setting four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for “All in the Family” in 1972 and three in a row from 1977-79 before adding a Best Drama Actor statuette for “In the Heat of the Night” in 1989.
