Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the first five episodes of “Dark Matter,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Blake Crouch ostensibly writes sci-fi stories; his mind-bending suspense novels “Dark Matter,” “Recursion” “Upgrade” are set in worlds where technology presents an opportunity to visit other dimensions, time travel and advance one’s brain and body to superhuman levels. But what makes Crouch’s work so special is that his books are love stories as well.
It’s certainly true of “Dark Matter,” his 2016 novel that he adapted into a limited series, currently airing on Apple TV+. Joel Edgerton stars as Jason Dessan, a loving family man who is kidnapped by a Jason from an alternate universe so that the two can swap lives. Jason2, as Crouch refers to him, finally gets to live out his life with wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley.) Jason Prime, however, is...

Who Is Max in Dark Matter? The Apple TV+ Series Just Threw Fans A Curveball - Main Image
Who is Max in Apple TV's Sci-Fi series Dark Matter? Although the series centers on Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton) and his alternate-universe counterpart, the secret revealed in episodes 3 and 4 might change that – and raise the stakes considerably.
Episode 3, titled The Box, reveals the existence of a mysterious child, previously unmentioned in the series. This deviates from the series' source material, Blake Crouch's 2016 best-selling novel of the same name, and has led to some out-there theories. Here's what makes Max's existence crucial in Dark Matter.
Content Spoilers: This article contains spoilers for Apple Tv+'s Dark Matter, so proceed with caution.
Who Is Max Dessen in Dark Matter? Theories Explored
Episode 3 shows "Jason B", aka the alternate universe version of physics professor Jason Dessen ("Jason A"), a heartbreaking part of Jason A's reality.

The multiverse just got a little more complicated on Dark Matter.
In Apple TV+’s limited series, which is based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, physics professor Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) is pulled into an alternate version of his life by a stranger. In this universe, he chose his science career over his pregnant girlfriend Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), they never got married, and she terminated her pregnancy, meaning that their son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) was never born. The kicker? Jason’s abductor is an alternate universe version of himself, who’s now taken over his life with Daniela and Charlie.

In the series premiere of Apple TV+’s Dark Matter, a former physicist is abducted into an alternate version of his life by a masked man who’s freakishly close to him. And it only gets weirder from there.
In the first episode (two are currently available to stream), we meet Jason (The Underground Railroad’s Joel Edgerton) and his wife Daniela (Snowpiercer’s Jennifer Connelly), a married couple living in Chicago with their teenaged son, Charlie (The Fabelmans‘ Oakes Fegley). Everything seems hunky-dory until Jason is invited out to celebrate an achievement by his friend and former colleague Ryan Holder...

Both broadly and specifically, “Dark Matter” is a TV series made with me in mind — or, at the very least, a version of me that could exist. Speaking generally, the Apple drama asks big questions about how the choices we make come to define who we are: Would I be different today if I had pursued a different career, married a different woman, or raised a different family? In small ways — the stuff of daydreams — the answer is, “Yes, of course, I’d be different.” In a different job, I wouldn’t be writing these words right now because I’d be napping in a hammock off the coast of Ireland, as a professional hammock tester specializing in cold weather climates. But aside from changes in what I’d be doing, what about who I am? Would a new profession, or a new partner, or a new home-life alter my personality?...

This Dark Matter review contains no spoilers.
The best-selling science fiction novel Dark Matter by Blake Crouch has been adapted into an Apple TV+ original series, bolstered by an all-star cast. With Crouch himself staying on as the showrunner and executive producer, Dark Matter unfolds at a brisk pace that leans more into the thriller elements of the source material than the science fiction premise. And while many of the familiar stylistic and thematic tropes in a number of Apple TV+ original thrillers are on display, the performance by the series’ leads elevates the material and helps make Dark Matter stand distinct from its contemporaries on the platform.
Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physics teacher at a local university in the suburbs of Chicago who lives a happy, if unassuming, life with his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and their teenage son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). After reconnecting with...

Two roads diverged when one man — scientist Jason Desson (played by Joel Edgerton) — chose to start a family instead of pursuing his professional research in quantum mechanics. Apple TV+‘s Dark Matter, an adrenaline-pumping, thought-provoking, nine-episode sci-fi thriller based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 bestselling novel, explores the resulting alternative lives Jason has, based on that decision he made so many years earlier. While “Jason 1,” a comfortable family man, works as a physics professor for a lower-tier Chicago community college and happily resides with ex-artist wife Daniela (Snowpiercer’s Jennifer Connelly) and their teenaged son Charlie (Oakes Fegley), “Jason 2” reaches incredible career heights, wins the most prestigious scientific awards — and builds a dimension-hopping metal box. Jason 2 then uses that box to abduct Jason 1, sending his unsuspecting alter-ego into that lonely, but successful life, so that Jason 2 may infiltrate the family he never got to have. “That tension between the family life and the work life,...

Have you ever watched It’s a Wonderful Life and wished that Frank Capra had paused to show us Clarence the Angel explaining to George Bailey how he was able to present him with the experience of a world in which he was never born?
Chances are good you haven’t — that you appreciate that the surest way to ruin whimsy is to “But actually…” it.
But if you have, indeed, yearned for a version of It’s a Wonderful Life in which “magic” was replaced by a literal black box and “joy and sadness and general wonderment” by “dejection and self-seriousness and general washed-out solemnity,” Apple TV+’s adaptation of Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter may be in your wheelhouse. It’s a series that doesn’t lack for ingenuity and, especially in the last two hours, ideas pop up that border on inspired, but the lack of tonal variation ultimately dooms Dark Matter.

You know the old adage: you wait ages for an Apple sci-fi show about quantum superposition, and then two come along at once. Just a month after we unravelled the existential mysteries of Constellation, we now have another reality-bending rabbit hole to disappear down in this series by Blake Crouch, adapted from his 2016 novel. But where Constellation took a deliberate, almost meditative approach to blending parallel worlds, confuzzling audiences right up until its slow-burn reveal, Dark Matter is a more up-front affair, wearing its fluctuating quantum state proudly on its five-dimensional sleeve.
Edgerton’s Jason Dessen lives a simple but happy life with wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). Working as a college physics teacher, he’s professionally unfulfilled (though apparently still able to afford a stunning brownstone in downtown Chicago) and vastly overshadowed by former classmate Ryan (Jimmi Simpson). After a night out though,...

Chicago – The truth is out there for David Duchovny, and he is definitely a seeker. The actor, best known for the TV series “The X Files” and “Californication,” has a new film in theaters opening February 14th, in which he portrays a father figure to the title character in “Adam the First.”
Duchovny is James, who is raising Adam (Oakes Fegley). When the boy is old enough to understand, James tells him he’s not his biological father. As Adam gets to be a teenager, his education is mostly about survival, as James keeps him off the grid in trailer in the woods. When the past catches up with them, Adam has to make his escape, but not before learning that three men named Jacob could possibly be his real father. The young teen must strike out on his own to find his roots, encountering the possibilities along the journey.

Michael Chiklis was so ignited by his role as a frightened dad who must confront the realities of his troubled son’s behavior in Fox’s anthology series Accused, he decided to come back for more. After starring in what would become the pilot episode, “Scott’s Story”, he told creator Howard Gordon that he’d like to step into the director’s chair. Gordon handed him “Jack’s Story”, another gripping tale that wrestles with the realities of a post-Roe v. Wade world. Chiklis discusses infusing his work with nuance in order to handle two of the most sensitive and current topics in the U.S. for broadcast television.
Deadline: Both of your episodes, “Scott’s Story” and “Jack’s Story”, tackle some of the most hotly contested issues in the nation right now. How did it feel working on those stories?

Michelle Williams always delivers grounded, deeply moving performances but is rarely showy about it. Her work with frequent collaborator Kelly Reichardt -- including "Wendy and Lucy" and "Showing Up" -- best illustrates this quiet brilliance. Reichardt makes minimalist, unhurried films that demand both precision and flexibility from her actors.
In addition to her films with independent directors like Reichardt, Williams also delivers exemplary turns in bigger films, which pair her king with legendary directors like Martin Scorses and Steven Spielberg. Her roles in Reichardt's "Certain Women" and Spielberg's "The Fabelmans" couldn't be more different, but her simultaneous sense of grace and familiarity are common threads. Even in her most theatrical performances -– notably "The Fabelmans" -– Williams always feels like a woman you could really know or someone you might see on the street.
Despite her status as a five-time Oscars nominee, Williams seems to somehow still fly under the radar,...

Imagine Law & Order told from the defendant’s point of view, laying out like a jigsaw puzzle the emotionally fraught circumstances that got them in this mess. Adapted from a British series by veteran producer H0ward Gordon, Fox‘s Accused (premiering January 22) takes that riskiest of formats for commercial TV — the weekly stand-alone anthology — and grafts it onto the legal drama with morally challenging parables that take us out of our comfort zone. Not exactly a recipe for slam-dunk success, but kudos to Fox for even attempting something this ambitious and, more often than not, riveting, at times even heartbreaking. Take the opening installment: “Scott’s Story,” a haunting what-if melodrama starring Michael Chiklis as a respected neurosurgeon who fears his emotionally withdrawn, bullied teenage son (Oakes Fegley) has the makings of a mass murderer. His wife (played by Jill Hennessy) coddles the boy and is in denial,...

Crime has never not made for popular TV viewing, but in recent years especially, it’s been covered in every which way. There are shows revisiting famous transgressions from more enlightened perspectives, or more playful ones. There are procedurals centering on cops, and limited series delving into the psychologies of the perpetrators. There are crime dramas that double as character studies, as cultural critiques, as meta examinations of the genre itself.
In that landscape, a new one needs something to make itself stand out, be it vivid style, unforgettable performances, a burning sense of purpose or at least an irresistible gimmick. Fox’s anthology series Accused, despite its promising pedigree (it was developed by Howard Gordon of Homeland and 24, and based on an award-winning BBC series by Jimmy McGovern), never manages to find it. The five episodes sent to critics, of a 15-episode season, aren’t so much awful as...

If you need a periodic reminder that Steven Spielberg is one of our greatest living filmmakers, look no further than "The Fabelmans," which /Film's Chris Evangelista raves about in his review. It could have been really easy for Spielberg to construct another half-hearted love letter to the movies, but there's so much more going on under the surface than its saccharine marketing would lead you to believe. The semi-autobiographical feature is less about how his fictional childhood counterpart grew up to become a filmmaking wizard, and more about how a gifted child builds his cinematic language around his parent's deteriorating marriage.
"The Fabelmans" is not only one of the best films of the year, but a personal favorite as well. It plays like Spielberg confronting a series of complicated feelings throughout his childhood, while on his way to becoming the blockbuster legend we know today. The film is stacked with...

This post contains spoilers for "The Fabelmans."
Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical film "The Fabelmans" recasts his childhood and memories through the lens of the titular family. His avatar is Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle), a kid coming of age while simultaneously learning that he has a deep love of — and aptitude for — filmmaking. Sadly, his growing obsession with cinema coincides with the breakdown of his family. As Sammy becomes more aware of the world around him, we watch his father and mother inevitably split. The film deftly handles its delicate balancing act. Overall, "The Fablemans" is an impressive feat of self-mythologizing that pushes for earnest sentimentality while letting its characters be messy and complicated.
Thanks to both the screenplay (by Spielberg and "West Side Story" collaborator Tony Kushner) and a talented cast, "The Fabelmans" is full of memorable characters who populate Sammy's world. Read on for every main character in "The Fabelmans,...
