Review: I absolutely love the Equalizer movies. It seems no one is making straight-forward action thrillers nowadays other than Antoine Fuqua, who’s become the greatest master of the genre since the late Tony Scott. His movies are taut, efficient and packed with gruesome, R-rated action. They know precisely what they are, and if this is the final Equalizer film, it perfectly closes out the only big-screen trilogy of Denzel Washington’s career.
Robert McCall is a perfect character for Denzel. At seventy years old, Washington has the right mix of righteous anger, world-weariness and kindness to do the character justice. One thing I always loved about the franchise was how...

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist. This article also contains major spoilers for "The Equalizer 3."The original 1985 TV series "The Equalizer," starring Edward Woodward, was part of a notable trend in television from the '70s and '80s. Multiple shows at the time were about dangerous, mysterious, lawless drifters who traveled from town to town seeking out justice and applying violence where it might be needed. The trend included shows like "Kung Fu," "Then Came Bronson," "The A-Team," "The Incredible Hulk," and a little later, "Renegade." Robert McCall was an ex-military man who had a talent for finding people in distress and helping them — violently — as the situation required.
In 2014, filmmaker Antoine Fuqua adapted "The Equalizer" to the big screen, casting Denzel Washington in the role of Robert McCall.

Nobody can threaten someone quietly better than Denzel Washington.
Oh, our man can pump up the volume when he needs to, in terms of letting people know he’s bringing the pain — our ears are still ringing from his “King Kong ain’t got shit on me!” taunt from Training Day. But when he lowers his voice to a basso profundo rumble and he fixes that dead-eyed stare on someone, the one that suggests the unflappable, untouchable Teflon Denzel has officially entered the building, and issues some sort of oh-you’ve-stepped-in-it-now promise of bodily harm?...

Carnage in Sicily: A winery overturned, its workers bloodied and brutalized lying dead on the floor. It’s hard to tell if it’s Merlot or viscera pouring across the pricy marble. The vineyard’s owner snakes wends his way through the carnage, down the stone stairs to the basement, where one man sits waiting for him. This is Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), and he’s got a bone to pick. He sets his watch, he does his job, and he leaves the property in a mess of bodies.
This is the third entry in director Antoine Fuqua and writer Richard Wenk’s version of the 1980s television show ‘The Equalizer’ (and not to be confused with the 2021 television reboot starring Queen Latifah). In Antoine Fuqua's 2018 film "The Equalizer 2," Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) spent just as much time engaging in civic rebuilding activities as he did slashing criminal throats. He scrubbed graffiti off of the walls of his Boston tenement, read Proust, and handed a reading list -- including Ta-Nehisii Coates' "Between the World and Me" and W.E.B. DuBois' "The Souls of Black Folk" -- to a neighboring at-risk teen (Ashton Sanders from "Moonlight"). It was a film just as much about righteous indignation as it was about kicking ass and cathartic murder. It was an action film for the Trump era, depicting a strictly moral assassin attacking wealthy white frat bros (one gets his neck cut open by the sharpened edge of his own credit card).

Denzel Washington is stepping into some familiar shoes for his new project. The 68-year-old reprises his role as the justice-driven Robert McCall for “The Equalizer 3”, the final entry in the film adaptation of the ’80s television series of the same name.
“The Equalizer” films star Washington as a retired U.S. Marine and former Dia officer, whose desire to dole out justice in his own way and help those being oppressed often pulls him back into dangerous missions. The first premiered in theaters in 2014 and the second in 2018.
“It’s unfinished business,” Washington tells Et when asked what inspired his return to the film series at 2023’s CinemaCon. “You know, the doormen in my building in New York, they love this guy. I talk to them about other films [and] they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, ‘Fences’, yeah, good movie. But when is the next [‘Equalizer’?]’ I’m like, ‘Why do you love him?...

As you'll likely have seen by now thanks to the first trailer, Denzel Washington's Robert McCall is back back back for the third – and apparently — final chapter of the Equalizer movies.
This latest outing for the government assassin-turned-doer-of-good-deeds (even if he often still resorts to violence to get the job done) finds McCall on Italy's picturesque Amalfi Coast, though plans for a relatively more relaxing time are soon scuppered when locals ask for his help to deal with a powerful criminal element.
Naturally, we took the opportunity to speak to returning Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua about why he chose to set the new movie outside the US, the main man's headspace, new danger and an old friend…
Mambo Italiano
More usually found stalking around Massachusetts, the third Equalizer sees Robert McCall instead hanging out at Italian cafes on the Amalfi coast. So is this Fuqua, Denzel Washington and co.

Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington returns for one final outing as Robert McCall in Columbia Pictures’ The Equalizer 3. The third film of the action franchise’s intense official trailer shows the former government assassin is just as lethal now as he was when Washington first played him in the 2014 film.
The third and final film reunites Washington with his Man on Fire co-star Dakota Fanning nearly 20 years after they made that action movie together.
Antoine Fuqua directed The Equalizer, The Equalizer 2, and returns to direct The Equalizer 3. Richard Wenk, screenwriter of the first two films, also returns. Fuqua, Washington, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Clayton Townsend, Alex Siskin, and Tony Eldridge produce, with David Bloomfield, Tarak Ben Ammar, and Andy Mitchell executive producing.

In between doling out Oscar-worthy performances and making Shakespearean monologues feel like something you haven't heard a thousand times before, Denzel Washington has spent the past two decades cracking skulls and taking names, going back to at least "Man on Fire." In fact, he's been doing it so long, his co-star in Tony Scott's sublime 2004 action-thriller, Dakota Fanning, had the chance to go off and grow up into a fully-fledged adult actor. That noise you just heard was the sound of millions of Millennials popping the vertebrae in their backs as they abruptly jerked upright, crying out in terror.
Washington and Fanning are now in the process of reuniting for "The Equalizer 3." The vigilante movie franchise is based on the 1980s series of the same name, which was also re-imagined as a TV show starring Queen Latifah in 2021. Both reboots retain the basic setup of the original show,...

Italian paramilitary police raided hotel rooms used by employees of a catering company on “The Equalizer 3” on the Amalfi coast and arrested two caterers after seizing more than 100 grams of cocaine on Tuesday, according to local media.
Italian newspaper Il Giornale reported that Carabinieri cops broke into hotel rooms in the seaside resort of Maiori used by the “Equalizer 3” caterers after the head of the film’s catering service suddenly died of a heart attack on Monday evening. Several small packages of cocaine were subsequently found in the man’s clothing, raising suspicions that there could be more drugs on the production’s premises.

"All this is Andròn - the quest for the contenders." The first trailer has debuted for an interesting sci-fi film called Andròn - The Black Labyrinth, or just Andron. It's about a dark, claustrophobic maze being run by Alec Baldwin, who broadcasts the fights of the various contenders hoping to survive. This seems like some weird mash-up of Cube and The Hunger Games, with a dose of The Maze Runner because of course. The ensemble cast includes Michelle Ryan, Danny Glover, Leo Howard, Gale Harold, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Gaia Scodellaro and Margareth Madè. There are some cool moments in this (the opening looks great) but I'm not sure if it'll be any good, especially with such a low IMDb rating. Fire it up. With the success of "The Hunger Games" and "The Maze Runner" franchises, there's inevitable low-budget films trying to copy that style - one of which is Italian filmmaker Francesco Cinquemani's UK sci-fi film "Andron - The Black Labyrinth". Today, the trailer for it has dropped.
Alec Baldwin is the President Snow of this particular film, one in which a group of people are plunged into a dark, claustrophobic maze, where they must fight to survive as the outside world watches. Michelle Ryan, Danny Glover, Leo Howard, Gale Harold, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Gaia Scodellaro and Margareth Made also star in the film which hasn't set a release date as yet.

How will it do in the ratings? Could it be cancelled by the peacock network and pulled before all of the 10 episodes have aired? Stay tuned.

It’s a rough state of affairs when news of the Earth’s impending destruction isn’t the worst thing that happens to you in a given day, yet that’s where the members of You, Me and the Apocalypse‘s doomsday bunch are at the outset of NBC’s new comedy.
In a moment, we’ll want to know what you thought of the premiere of the series (which has already aired in the United Kingdom). But first, a brief recap:

It’s hard to go in blind to any television show nowadays, with all of the coverage, behind-the-scenes, and spoiler chat that seem to be the cornerstone of marketing campaigns for any series with a hashtag and Twitter account. When you get that rare opportunity, having no idea what you’re about to get yourself into, it’s exciting not knowing what’s coming your way. This surprised, in-the-dark feeling is thematically apt given the subject matter of You, Me and the Apocalypse – humanity has 34 days to live thanks to an eight-mile-long comet hurtling towards the planet that’ll bring along a few earthquakes, tidal waves, acid fog, and essentially wipe the microbial floor with our remains.
Thanks to NBC’s weird-in-retrospect marketing, I went into the British-American series with the preconceived notion that You, Me and the Apocalypse was a quirky half-hour...

2016 is going to be a bitchin’ year for science fiction and fantasy television shows. Not only for new shows hitting your screen but returning favorites! Here are some of our favorites that we are looking forward to over the next twelve months:
Mid Season Premieres:
“iZombie” (January 12, The CW)
Our darling but reluctant zombie Liv has broken up with Major for what feels like the billionth time (poor Major amiright?), the mob boss and Max Rager company are still on the loose, and the zombie cure is pretty much dead (get it??). Things aren’t looking good for our protags.
“The Walking Dead” (February 14, AMC)
The zombie horde is in Alexandria and the town that could have been home is about to be destroyed (Again). Guess who is about to come to make an entrance? Highly anticipated villain of the comic book series, Negan, it scheduled make his appearance in...

Rob Lowe and Pauline Quirke, together at last! Sky One's You, Me And The Apocalypse has that and plenty more to recommend it…
The original title of Sky/NBC’s new comedy drama was sacrificed to the gods of transatlantic appeal. Apparently Us audiences aren’t familiar enough with English boroughs just off the M4 for Apocalypse Slough to work (Apocalypse Slu-ff? Slo-oo?), hence the change to something more generic.
Thankfully, that seems to have been the only thing flattened in translation, because title aside, You, Me And The Apocalypse is a blast. Pun intended.
Mat Baynton (Horrible Histories, The Wrong Mans) is likeable as ever in the role of Slough bank manager Jamie Winton, the routine-loving straight man to his feckless, hedonistic housemate, Dave (Joel Fry). Yes, it’s a bit in debt to Peep Show, but these two soon have much more to worry about than Mark and Jez ever did.
