The Conners have always struggled with money — but a financial development in the Roseanne spinoff’s most recent episode probably caught a few longtime viewers off guard.
Season 6, Episode 8 (“Toilet Hacks and the Management Trick”) marked Dan Conner’s 70th birthday. To commemorate the occasion, Dan announced to the family that he was going to start collecting his social security and union pension. “Yep, I beat the system by being poor and living longer than the government thought I would,” he said. (I mean, he lived longer than any of us thought he would, but I digress….)

Most of ABC's existing scripted series have already been renewed for the 2024-25 season, but The Conners is not among them. If the venerable comedy doesn't get a seventh season renewal, viewers will still get some closure.
Starring John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, and Jay R. Ferguson, The Conners series is a spin-off of Roseanne. The story follows Dan Conner (Goodman), his children, grandchildren, and sister-in-law as they make their way in the working-class community of Lanford, Illinois.

For any television series reaching its 100th episode, looking back is a given, but there aren’t many shows with a 35-year history like ABC’s “The Conners,” the sitcom following the blue-collar family with an affinity for getting knocked down by life’s struggles while making us laugh along the way. “It’s just lucky, I guess,” says John Goodman, who plays patriarch Dan Conner. “Now all of a sudden, it’s 100 episodes. I can’t believe how fast the time went by, but I guess that’s just because I’m getting old.”

The Conners – ABC’s “The Conners” stars John Goodman as Dan Conner. (Disney/Justin Stephens) You’ll have to excuse John Goodman is he sounds like he’s using a cliché when he talks about the Conner family. After all, he’s been part of that television family for nearly four decades. He’s seen the young children from Roseanne grow into adults and become parents themselves on The Conners. And he’s worked alongside many of the same people — on both shows — for many years. We’ve spoken to Goodman many times over the course of the shows, and he’s always been insistent that the audience loves the Conner family because, as characters on the set and as people in real life, Goodman and the other actors share a lot of love with each other and their supportive crew. John Goodman opened up about defending Roseanne Barr when she posted a racist tweet in 2018.
Barr’s tweet was an attack against Valerie Jarrett, a former chief executive officer of the Obama Foundation. The irresponsible tweet caused major backlash and many to lose their jobs after ABC canceled her comedy show, Roseanne.
After canceling the long-running sitcom, ABC decided to air a spin-off later in the same year called The Connors, in which Barr’s character, Roseanne, is killed off.
In a recent interview with Variety, Goodman was asked if he regrets speaking up for Barr.
“No. At the time I remember going to some kind of junket where they saw the pilot, and then the interviews, and it just turned into attack,” he said. “And that made me very uncomfortable with them just attacking Roseanne. “
The Golden Globe winner also explained that he “felt bad for her” and that he “loves her.

John Goodman has a lot of catching up to do. Over the past six years, the renowned actor has been so busy rebooting his role as Dan Conner on Roseanne and The Conners, and establishing himself as televangelist patriarch Eli Gemstone on the fantastic HBO series The Righteous Gemstones, he hasn’t had time for the little things, like following up on medical appointments and getting back to the boxing gym, just a few years after he shed more than 200 pounds. “It’s like I didn’t have any time off,...

John Goodman was last nominated for an Emmy way back in 2010 when he earned a Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor bid for “You Don’t Know Jack.”; he lost that race to David Strathairn (“Temple Grandin”). The TV vet could be about to make a return to the Emmys for the first time in a lucky 13 years thanks to his ongoing role in the “Roseanne” sequel series “The Conners.”
“The Conners” follows the titular working-class family struggling through day-to-day life in Illinois after the sudden death of the original show’s title character Roseanne (Roseanne Barr). Goodman plays Dan Conner, who was the husband to Roseanne and the father to their four children: Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Becky (Lecy Goranson), DJ (Michael Fishman), and Jerry Garcia (who was retconned in “The Conners”).
As Dan, Goodman exudes the warm, everyman charm he has long had a high currency in throughout his career.

Did your heart ache watching Dan Conner set fire to the bedroom set he bought for Roseanne when they first got married?
Well, put those tissues away because we've got some exciting news!
The Conners have teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles and Charitybuzz to auction off pieces from that bedroom set and much more!
With Louise moving in, there were big changes afoot for the Conner family as Dan tried to sell the bedroom furniture he bought for Roseanne when they were first married.
In my The Conners Season 4 Episode 8 review, I mentioned how I wished Dan had considered donating the bedroom set to charity instead of setting it on fire.
Well, in a providential turn of events, the actual bedroom set may not have been burned to ashes after all! (Perhaps not everything we see on TV is real. Who knew?)

ABC’s top comedy series The Conners has set its second live episode — the upcoming Season 4 premiere on Sept. 22. The announcement was made during the network’s portion of the summer TCA virtual press tour.
The cast of the blue-collar family sitcom will perform live for both the East and West Coast broadcasts, joined by surprise guests as well as virtual appearances by fans.
ABC and The Conners are launching the “You Can Be A Conner” sweepstakes. As part of the storyline in the episode, a Conner family member will call each sweepstakes winner for a live conversation regarding how they deal with some of the same life issues that the Conners navigate on a daily basis, adding an improv element to the telecast as actors interact with viewers live on the air.

When The Conners returns for Season 3 this October, it will feature a lot more Ben.
Per TV Line, Jay R. Ferguson has been promoted to series regular.
Ferguson first appeared on The Conners Season 1, and went on to have a bigger role on The Conners Season 2.
Executive producer Bruce Helford told TV Line that Ferguson's real-life friendship with Sara Gilbert (Darlene) helped their on-screen relationship.
"Jay and Sara have a long history," Helford said.
"They were buddies since they were teenagers. And their chemistry is so freakin' good. We didn’t know [the Darlene/Ben romance] was going to be long-term."
"We actually had plans at one point for her to be thinking about somebody else and kind of blowing this relationship up," he continued.
"But as we watched them we [realized] you can’t get much better than the way they act with each other because they’re two alphas going at it."

ABC is keeping this Lanford family together. The network just announced they've renewed The Conners for a third season for the 2020-21 broadcast season.
A spin-off of Roseanne, The Conners sitcom follows the extended working-class Conner family that’s led by widower Dan Conner (John Goodman) and his three adult children -- Becky (Lecy Goranson), Darlene (Sara Gilbert), and D.J. (Michael Fishman) -- as well as sister-in-law, Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf). The series also stars Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, and Jayden Rey.

I hate it when The Connors leaves us with a distressing season finale.
Perhaps hate is too strong a word. This series does such an amazing job of letting us laugh at the hard times, but sometimes it's difficult when circumstances really make you want to cry or throw yourself down the escalator at the mall.
The one constant that this family has always been able to hold onto is their home. It has been the one thing they could all come back to even during their most desperate times.
So my heart hurt for Dan Conner during The Conners Season 2 Episode 20. Dan has worked hard all his life to provide a home for his family, one that they return to over and over again.
This family has suffered through so many difficult times for so long that I wondered if Ben had a point in this The Conners quote:

With networks starting to run out of scripted programming, it's good to know that there are still some options out there.
We have premieres of some Netflix hits, and some returning broadcast originals, so that's always a plus!
Take a look below at our recommendations for what to watch this week.
Sunday, May 3
8/7c Batwoman (The CW)
It's Ladies Night in Gotham! Kate goes clubbing and runs into an old flame.
Meanwhile, Sophie's mission gets her close to a co-worker, and Julia takes Luke undercover to recover the much sought-after journal his father wrote.
Can't forget about Alice. How will she be scheming? Who can derail them while she's in Arkham?
Tune in and then check out our review here! We're bound to have something to discuss!
8/7c Good Witch (Hallmark)
Another season of Good Witch starts tonight! With Grace and Nick off to college, that means the adults will get a lot more attention.

Just when I thought Dan and Louise were over for good, The Conners Season 2 Episode 18 proved me wrong.
Kudos to Dan Conner for having the guts to not turn tail and run after seeing Louise kissing her fellow band mate. He road over 200 miles to tell her how he felt, and he needed to do that, even if it didn't go the way he'd hoped.
And his flowers ended up with nacho cheese and a Band-Aid in them.
Eww.
Dan put himself out there and put it all on the line, sort of.
He told Louise that he was ready to have a real relationship with her, but he left out the part about being in love with her. That had to wait until he got drunk and stumbled upon Louise's new guy, Zack, at the bar.
Waitress: Maybe you should call your wife so she can pick you up.

Dan Conner is a man of conflicting emotions. The widower at the heart of The Conners, the spinoff to ABC's Roseanne revival that killed off Roseanne Barr's character in the series premiere, grew close to Louise (Katey Sagal), only to cut things off with the character. In the sneak peek above, Dan (John Goodman) confesses to daughter Becky (Lecy Goranson) that he misses Louise. "The guys were talking about how bad I screwed up, and they're right. I miss her, Ok? I miss Louise," Dan says. "That's not a bad thing," Becky says. "Yes, it is. Because every time I think about the things I'd be doing with her—going to concerts, bowling a few games, anything fun—I...

The last three installments of The Conners were exceptional.
From the hysterical football theme to the so-honest-it-was-funny live episode about politics to Ben and Darlene's discussion about starting a family that almost ended them as a couple, this show has frequently made me think, feel, and laugh out loud.
I suppose that's what made The Conners Season 2 Episode 14 so disappointing.
There wasn't much to laugh about and even the touchy-feely moments didn't quite hit the mark I've come to expect.
Take Jackie and the offer of a thrupple.
Jackie does need to put herself out there. She deserves to have a social life, even a love life.
But a relationship with another married couple? I know this was supposed to be humorous, but all it managed to do was make me cringe.
They’ve been married 30 years. They’re regular one person at a time people.
Jackie Permalink: They’ve been married 30 years.

It was a big day for the Conner family.
The Lunch Box finally had its grand opening thanks in large part to Dan doing much of the work pro bono to get the building in shape.
As far as I'm concerned, that man deserves free hugs, free stew, and free dessert to go along with it!
It seemed odd that The Lunch Box reopening took a back seat to other stories on The Conners Season 2 Episode 13, and they were both storylines I never saw coming.
First up was Ben wanting a baby.
This was a topic I'd never even considered for Ben and Darlene, and I wish Ben had brought it up earlier considering he's dating a woman who is in her 40s and already has two teenagers.
Darlene: This is stupid. Even if I wanted one, he knows I’m like a hundred.
Becky, Hey, you might still have...

Tonight, “The Conners” joins the pantheon of live sitcom episodes with “Live From Lanford.” That’s right — the original iteration of “Roseanne” never got the chance to partake in this more contemporary sitcom rite of passage, and neither did the revival (for different reasons), but now, their successor will.
And tonight’s episode of “The Conners” isn’t just live: It’s specifically tied to the 2020 Presidential race, because why not?

Becky really stepped up during The Conners Season 2 Episode 9.
After years of drunken stupors, bad decisions, and disappointing encounters, it's been good to see Becky pull it together for herself, her child...
And for Dan.
When Dan told Louise he didn't need anything for his birthday, what he meant was he didn't need anyone to make a fuss.
But there's a difference between making a fuss and doing absolutely nothing.
Dan Conner doesn't expect much. A beer cozy with his granddaughter's photo taped to it is enough to make him happy, but having most of his family forget his birthday all together was just too much.
In so many ways, it's just sad. Dan has bailed everyone out at one time or another. He's the rock they all rely on yet he couldn't even count on them to get him a birthday cake.

Dan Conner saves the day.
That shouldn't come as a surprise as Dan is usually the one who does that for his family just by being the solid presence that they're always allowed to come home to.
Some superheroes don't need capes.
But they do need time to heal, and it was obvious on The Conners Season 2 Episode 3 that Dan was still mourning Roseanne.
Even with a house full of kids and grandkids and a sister-in-law who never seems to leave, things must be lonely for Dan.
Roseanne was his wife and his best friend for decades. Losing a partner like that isn't something you truly get over, ever, you just learn to keep moving forward.
Louise made it clear that she's interested in Dan for more than friendship, but when he slipped and called her Rosie, two things became apparent.

Is Dan Conner ready to move on? Last season of The Conners, viewers met Louise (played by sitcom veteran Katey Sagal), a former classmate of Dan (John Goodman) and Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) who expressed romantic interest in the TV widower. Dan put the brakes on anything, but now in season two, Louise is back and it seems like things could be progressing between the two. In the preview for the Tuesday, Oct. 8 episode of The Conners, Dan and Louise are visiting Becky's (Lecy Goranson) baby in the hospital where he tells his new grandchild that she'll be coming home to live with him, despite the house not being much. Phew! That was quite a ride! Say what you will about “Stranger Things 3,” but it’s not lacking in forward momentum. Quickly edited, densely populated, and bursting with vivid images, Season 3 of The Duffer Brothers’ Netflix original feels like it’s playing in an old arcade, where if X number of seconds pass without a rat exploding or a blob oozing across the floor, it’s game over.

It’s official — ABC has ordered a second season of Roseanne spinoff The Conners. The renewal comes after series’ producer Werner Entertainment secured new deals with the core cast of Roseanne veterans, John Goodman, who plays Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf (Jackie Harris), Sara Gilbert (Darlene Conner) and Lecy Goranson (Becky Conner-Healy). The size of the order has not been revealed by ABC but has been speculated to be 13 episodes, slightly bigger than last season’s 11.
While not the mega hit of the size of the Roseanne revival, The Conners has been a breakout for ABC. In its first season, the Roseanne followup averaged 9.5 million total viewers and a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating (Live+7) to rank as the season’s No. 1 new comedy in total viewers and 18-49 and ABC’s No. 1 comedy in both categories. The Conners improved its Tuesday 8 pm time period by 33% in total viewers and by 22% in adults...
