On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service. The lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show – but now that the strike is over, Crystal Lake is probably getting back on track, and since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!
May 2024 Update: Well, we’re back to the drawing board, because A24 has decided to “go a different way” with the material, moving ahead with Crystal Lake without the involvement of Bryan Fuller. The search for a new showrunner is underway. So for right now, it could be said that we don’t know anything about what Crystal Lake will be. We only have an...

Jason Universe: Larry Zerner shares assessment of what’s going on with the Friday the 13th franchise
Back on Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian of Horror Inc., production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. The project seemed to be on track to start filming this summer… but then, earlier this month, we learned that Fuller was booted from the project because A24 wanted to go in a “different direction.” While we wait to see what’s going to happen with Crystal Lake, Horror Inc. announced they’re launching the Jason Universe, which will consist of “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment,...

The Cannes Film Festival officially kicks off today with the latest from Quentin Dupieux, but Francis Ford Coppola has decided to truly begin the festivities with a bang. After a brief, enticing tease earlier this month, he’s now debuted the epic first trailer for Megalopolis, chock full of jaw-dropping images that has us counting down the hours until Thursday’s world premiere. “Our new film Megalopolis is the best work I’ve ever had the privilege to preside over,” notes Coppola with the trailer.
Along with French distribution from Le Pacte, the film was also picked up by Constantin Film for Germany and all German-speaking territories, including Switzerland and Austria; Eagle Pictures for Italy; Tripictures for Spain; and Entertainment Film Distributors Limited for the U.K., per Deadline. A U.S. deal has yet to be announced, but here’s hoping it comes during the festival.

In 2022, A24 Films and Peacock teamed up with showrunner Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal“) to tackle a prequel streaming series set within the universe of “The Friday The 13th” franchise. However, ahead of its production, Fuller has exited “Crystal Lake,” following rumors that the series was falling apart or hitting pause, depending on who you believed. According to Variety, A24 aims to replace Fuller with another showrunner and continue on as key things like casting hadn’t even started.

It’s been quite a week for Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel series which has been in development from Hannibal‘s Bryan Fuller. Initial reports stated that A24 had pulled the plug on the project, but a subsequent report claimed it was still alive, just undergoing a “retooling.” Bryan Fuller has now taken to Instagram to address what’s going on with the series, and unfortunately, it sounds like he’s no longer involved.

“Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with,” Fuller wrote. “These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me.“
Fuller continued: “When it works, as with Hannibal, the results can be powerful for the storytellers and the audience.

The “Friday the 13th” prequel series in the works at Peacock from A24 is in search of a new showrunner.
Bryan Fuller — who was announced as the show’s writer, executive producer, and showrunner when it was first ordered to series in 2022 — took to Twitter to announce that he has been fired from the show due to creative differences.
“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” he said. “We hope the final product will be something ‘Friday the 13th’ fans all over the world will enjoy.”
Trouble on the series was first reported earlier in the week by the InSneider newsletter. However, according to an individual with knowledge of the project, the series order remains in place with hopes to line up a new showrunner as soon as possible. Production had not begun on the series, nor had any casting taken place.

This week has brought a lot of confusion about “Crystal Lake,” A24, Peacock and Bryan Fuller’s (“Hannibal”) television series expansion of the Friday the 13th franchise. While reports and rumors spread about A24 pulling the plug on the series, we told you on Monday that that’s not exactly the case. Rather, the project is being retooled behind the scenes.
So what exactly is going on here? Bryan Fuller has taken to Instagram tonight to provide an update. The bad news? Fuller is no longer involved with the “Crystal Lake” series.
The good news? That doesn’t mean A24 is giving up hope on the project.
Fuller writes on Instagram, “Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with. These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people...

I’ve predicted Megalopolis, anticipated as it is, will have a clear dividing point: the cultural commentariat hoping to see “another film by the director of The Godfather” and those who appreciate “something that looks and sounds like a Star Wars prequel.” I am very firmly in the latter, was duly excited by the first image, and can only be pleased with the time-stopping debut teaser, arriving today via Le Pacte.
It comes with a sad addenedum. Coppola, sharing the teaser on Instagram, noted:
Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf.
As Coppola recently told Vanity Fair, “I wouldn’t have been able to make it without standing as I do on the shoulders of G.B. Shaw,...

Wilson Cruz‘s journey to becoming Dr. Hugh Culber on Star Trek: Discovery—now in its final season, dropping Thursdays on Paramount+—had a few twists and turns. As he shares with TV Insider, he read about the series early on. “It was even before CBS All Access [the streaming service’s name before the Paramount+ rebrand]. I think it was CBS in general was going to bring Star Trek back to TV and Bryan Fuller was attached to create it. I had just worked with Brian a couple years before, maybe more on the series finale of Pushing Daisies,” he recalls. “I sent Bryan a little Dm on Twitter saying, ‘Hey, how are you? By the way, great article … about the new Star Trek series. By the way, huge fan, would love to be part of it.’ Shoot your shot, I say.” Cruz did get a response from Fuller. “Wilson, would be great to see you in a...

Now that Francis Ford Coppola has unveiled his long-in-the-works epic Megalopolis to buyers and the industry, we’re just a few weeks away from its official premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. As he hopefully secures U.S. distribution soon, the first look has finally arrived.

Bachelor Nation is going through it. First The Golden Bachelor‘s Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist split, and now Greg Grippo and Victoria Fuller have called it quits after nearly two years of dating. The Bachelorette alum revealed on the April 22 episode of Jason Tartick‘s Trading Secrets podcast that he and Fuller were no longer together. “It’s sad, to be honest with you. It’s really sad,” Grippo said. Grippo wouldn’t divulge any details about his split with Fuller and said he doesn’t “have anything bad to say” about her. “I just want to respect her during this time and not go into detail on anything, but we’ve definitely ended things,” he admitted. Speculation about Grippo and Fuller’s breakup began when they both unfollowed each other on Instagram. The reality star continued, “She’s amazing, and I know that she’s going to continue to do amazing things.

“I have to give a special shoutout to my publicist, and I know you all said, ‘Don’t say nothing about no publicist,’” the actress began onstage, referencing some cheeky pre-show instructions. “But you don’t have a publicist like I have a publicist.”
“The Holdovers” star continued, “You have been by my side through the entire thing, and I am forever grateful.”
Wait, who is “you”? Host Jimmy Kimmel had the same question and doubled-backed to Randolph shortly after her win was announced, quipping after a brief break, “You forgot to mention your publicist’s name. I think your publicist needs a publicist is what it is.”
Without a mic, Randolph then desperately attempted to mouth the name Marla Farrell from her seat.

The production of "Star Trek: Discovery," as Trekkies likely know, was notoriously troubled. The original concept for "Discovery," as envisioned by TV mastermind Bryan Fuller, was a "Star Trek" anthology show wherein every season would take place in a different era in "Trek" history. The first season was to take place shortly before the events of the original 1966 "Star Trek" series, while the second would be concurrent with the original series. The third season would overlap with "Star Trek: The Next Generation," set a century later, and the fourth would take the series into the distant future.
"Discovery" followed this mold, but only kind of. The first season of "Discovery" did indeed precede the original series, while its second interacted directly with a young Spock (Ethan Peck) and the pre-Kirk USS Enterprise. Then, thanks to a time portal, the USS Discovery was thrown forward in time almost a millennium, and...

Elvis Presley‘s “Rock-a-Hula Baby” was released alongside one of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s most famous songs. “Rock-a-Hula Baby” suffers by comparison, but it also fails on its own. It’s a strange fusion that never quite comes together. Here’s a look at why it a B-movie actor wrote the track.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Rock-a-Hula Baby’ was part of a forgotten trend
Elvis’ Blue Hawaii typified a specific point in American history. Hawaii became a state in 1959. Around that time, the rest of the United States showed a strong interest in Hawaii. The late 1950s and 1960s gave us Gidget Goes Hawaiian, the Christmas song “Mele Kalikimaka,” and a lot of tacky tiki bars. Elvis jumped on the bandwagon with a trio of movies: Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls!, and Paradise, Hawaiian Style.
According to Elvis Australia, songwriter Ben Weisman revealed the origin of “Rock-a-Hula Baby.

50 years after its release, Bob Clark's "Black Christmas" remains one of the most chilling scary stories put to celluloid. The 1974 proto-slasher pits a group of sorority members against "Billy," an almost preternatural stranger who sputters incoherent yet disturbing sentiments at them over phone calls before hunting them down, all the while discreetly stowed away in their attic. Yet, the real horror of the film is as much the entitled men and patriarchy these young women have to deal with as the mysterious individual actively trying to murder them.
"Black Christmas" may have been released decades before "Acab" came back into the vernacular, but it embraces the same idea. The police are enragingly slow to respond to these women and their harassment complaints, with John Saxon's Lieutenant Fuller the rare competent officer who actually listens to them and soon realizes just how much immediate danger they're in. Tim's inevitable death has been hanging over us since Fellow Travelers Season 1 Episode 1.
Fellow Travelers Season 1 Episode 8 -- the series finale -- brought the show to a close in an emotional and impactful way.
If I had to describe the final chapter in one word, it would be "unexpected."
Back to the 1950s
It was an inspired choice to take us back to the 1950s to tell one last story about Hawk and Tim. Their love for one another ran more profound than ever during that period.
For all of its flaws, Washington, D.C., was where they met, and their relationship flourished despite having to keep things on the down low.
Their relationship is a big "what if" because had they gotten together somewhere else that was more accepting of same-sex relationships, perhaps they would have lived the rest of their days together.

Horror villains may terrify us and give us countless nightmares but that doesn't stop us from shelling out our hard-earned cash to see them hack their way through innocent victims on the big screen. There are innumerable reasons why these murderous figures have become pop culture icons: their signature modus operandi, their unique looks, the one-liners they spout before causing some serious bloodshed, whatever. From Leatherface to Ghostface, from Pinhead to Pumpkinhead, we simply can't take our eyes off the screen when these legendary monsters make their appearance.
However, there's no better way to undermine the terror and mystery of horror villains than by watching the actors who play them goof around behind the scenes. Not only does it destroy the illusion by revealing that these maniacs and monsters are just people in costumes and makeup but it shows that, in reality, they are about as harmless as Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Bryan Fuller's "Hannibal" is a series about serial killers who, much like the titular cannibal famously featured in "The Silence of the Lambs," approach their grisly crimes as a sick, twisted form of personal creative expression. One killer, for example, arranges their victims into a totem pole on a beach, while another turns a person into a human cello. You would think the show's gorgeously grotesque crime scenes would be the thing that got it into trouble with censors ... but you'd be wrong.
The show's fifth episode, "Coquilles," features what might be the most head-scratching example of censorship in a series full of them. As the episode begins, a couple is discovered murdered in a motel room. Their corpses have been beheaded and positioned so that they appear to be kneeling in prayer in front of a bed, the skin on their backs having been torn away to form...

Dust Bunny: David Dastmalchian joins Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver in Bryan Fuller horror film
Actor David Dastmalchian has an impressive list of credits that includes Late Night With the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Oppenheimer, The Boogeyman, Dune, The Suicide Squad, the Ant-Man films, Blade Runner 2049, The Belko Experiment, Prisoners, and The Dark Knight, among many others. Now Collider reports that Dastmalchian has joined the cast of Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s family-oriented horror project Dust Bunny.
This project was announced last November, not long before we learned that Fuller is also working on a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake for franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Dust Bunny went into production earlier this year, with Hannibal himself Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver (Alien) in lead roles.

There's no disappointment quite as confusing as when a film gets canceled. It might happen suddenly, or become inevitable as a passion project suffers delay after delay. Then, when it does happen, it's usually because of shrouded problems behind the scenes or other powers beyond our control, like luck and timing. Suddenly, an exciting project ceases to exist. For hard-working artists and eager cinephiles alike, it's like a rug getting pulled.

On Oct. 4, Sam Wineman filed a sensational lawsuit, detailing a hostile work environment on the set of the AMC-produced docuseries “Queer for Fear,” where he allegedly endured bullying, discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault and retaliation.
At the heart of the producer’s complaint is Wineman’s allegation that Bryan Fuller — the creator of shows like “Hannibal” and “Pushing Daisies” and a major player in the “Star Trek” franchise — sexually harassed and assaulted Wineman during production. He claims the misconduct took place after the two began working together in 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic. Fuller is a defendant in the complaint alongside AMC and its video-on-demand service Shudder.
But 14 people involved with the Emmy-nominated series are pushing back on Wineman’s #MeToo claims and his characterization of a toxic workplace. The sources, nine of whom went on the record with Variety, had a wide range of responsibilities on...

Circumstances throughout history have forced people to hide defining aspects of themselves. Yet, there is a profound cruelty in denying the truth of one’s being, even if it is a means of survival. Based on the bestselling novel by Thomas Mallon and adapted for television by Ron Nyswaner, “Fellow Travelers” is a sweeping love story spanning three decades. It’s a narrative about what it means to simultaneously spend a life completely with someone while entirely separate from them. The Washington, D.C.- set drama series is told through the perspectives of two very different men. Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Matt Bomer) is a charismatic federal bureaucrat whose stoic demeanor and hypermasculine charm enable him to neatly tuck his sexuality away, mostly evading suspicion. In contrast, Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey) is the boyish new assistant to Sen. Joseph McCarthy (an unrecognizable Chris Bauer), full of idealistic views and a...

Oscar nominee Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) brings Thomas Mallon’s 2007 bestselling novel Fellow Travelers to life in a Showtime limited series starring Matt Bomer (The Normal Heart) and Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton). The first episode of the eight-episode season will stream on Friday, October 27, 2023 on Paramount+ with Showtime before premiering on Showtime on October 29 at 9pm Et/Pt.
“Bomer plays charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the-scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin (Bailey), a young man who’s brimming with idealism and religious faith. They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on ‘subversives and sexual deviants,’ initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history,” reads Showtime’s synopsis.

Chances are, if you’re familiar with the name Edward D. Wood, Jr., it’s thanks to Tim Burton’s delightful biopic, Ed Wood. Certainly, people were aware of the eccentric writer-director prior to the 1994 film, but Burton cast Wood in a whole new light, turning the quote-unquote “worst director of all time” into a lovable dreamer who wouldn’t let puny budgets, bad actors, or obnoxious producers impede his goals. Ed Wood gave us a reason to appreciate a man for whom making movies was the ultimate gratification, quality be damned. Settle into your favorite angora sweater, because we’re going to find out What Really Happened to Ed Wood.
To start off with the obvious, Wood’s real life wasn’t quite as peachy keen as the movie portrays. Tim Burton didn’t want to make a traditional biopic about the man, nor did the screenwriters, who based...

Last week, producer and director Sam Wineman filed a lawsuit against Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller and AMC Networks including accusations of sexual assault, creating a hostile work environment and retaliation on the docuseries Queer For Fear.
Wineman was a producer and director for Shudder’s four-part series Queer For Fear: The History Of Queer Horror.
Wineman accused Fuller, an executive on the series, of sexual assault and asserted that AMC executives had ignored his allegations and instead punished him when he voiced his discomfort.
In a filing with the L.A. Superior Court, Wineman made specific accusations that Fuller was abusive to Wineman while he worked on the 2022 docuseries. He also claimed that his termination from the series in August 2021 was in response to the comments he made to higher-ups about Fuller’s “unlawful behavior and comments.”

The 80th annual Venice Film Festival launches on the Lido on August 30. This edition features a slew of Oscar hopefuls including Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” Yorgas Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.” They’re all vying for the top prize, the Golden Lion.
Seventy years ago, there were four now-classics in competition: William Wyler’s “Roman Holiday,” for which Audrey Hepburn would win Oscar, John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge,” Samuel Fuller’s “Pickup on South Street” and Vincente Minnelli’s “The Bad and the Beautiful,” which had recently picked up five Oscars. But the Golden Lion didn’t roar at the 14th edition of the international film festival.

A new iteration of the Full House series was a brewing possibility when actor Bob Saget suddenly died in 2022. Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner, said despite the loss, the cast could reunite someday in some capacity.
“I don’t know that we’re done with the Full / Fuller legacy,” Sweetin said on the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef podcast.
“But I do think it’s going to have to be some time from now after Bob,” she said. “I think that would be a big loss. I think, obviously it’s something that would, could be dealt with at some point.”
“But I do think that definitely is a big hole in all of our hearts right now, so we’ll see,” she added. “We always joke that we’re up for a Golden Girls-type version of Kimmy and Steph and DJ living somewhere in Miami wearing Mumus on the Lanai.

For “Beef” editors Laura Zempel and Nat Fuller, working on the Emmy-nominated Netflix limited series was for the birds in one specific instance. The series finale opens with two crows commenting on the action as if the winged creatures were some kind of Greek chorus.
“I love the opening with the crows – those are real crows and so the dailies of them were insane,” Zempel tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview about the special avian guest stars in the finale. “My assistant Lily Wild was wonderful and put locators on each crow in Avid and so I could see like, ‘Okay, I need this one to say two lines. So when does this one do two squawks?’ It was like cutting it together as though they were actors, was it was really fun and challenging. But I love how that turned out.”

Appearing on the Monday Mile podcast with snowboarder Amy Fuller, McGuinness spoke about the “pressure” of the job, which he said he “felt more” than with Top Gear.

“We were talking about how it can be talked about online and stuff. He said he stood in on a sports breakfast show... for a month and he said the abuse he got. He said, ‘I’m an ex-sports person, Ashes and all that, and even I got abuse!

Pete Townshend has released “Can’t Outrun the Truth,” a charity single that The Who member created in collaboration with his wife Rachel Fuller under her nom de plume Charlie Pepper.
Marking Townshend’s first proper solo single in 29 years, “Can’t Outrun the Truth” was recorded at his home studio after Fuller composed the song on the piano and channeled her thoughts about the feelings of isolation caused by the pandemic into its lyrics. Then, with her singing days “long over,” Fuller asked Townshend to record the demo.
The final result features Townshend playing lap steel guitar and violin while singing universal lyrics like, “This lockdown is bringing me down/ My mind’s gone underground/ Though I crawl from room to room/ I can’t leave myself behind.” Watch the music video, directed by Michael Nunn and William Trevit, below.

No cinematographer speaks to television’s visual storytelling aspirations quite like James Hawkinson, and the best example is his work on “Hannibal,” the 2013 NBC crime procedural that was resurrected this month when Netflix made all three seasons available for streaming.
