Quotes

  • Arsène Lupin : [fetching Sonia's evening gown from the maid and holding it up to admire it]  Well, here we are. It's very nice! It's a little naughty. It's very ni - Do you think your father the general would approve of this?

Sonia : My father the general always said that a gentleman was a man who never went to bed with his spurs on.

Arsène Lupin : Isn't that a pity. I'm so fond of horses. I could give up riding...?

Sonia : Give me that dress!

Arsène Lupin : You can't get into it alone

Sonia : The maid will help me.

Arsène Lupin : The maid? I know more about unhooking than any maid in Paris.

Sonia : Yes, but I want this one hooked.

[she reaches for the dress, which he holds out of reach]

Sonia : I'm going to stay right here in this bed until you leave this room!

[Chamerace walks over to the window and prepares to toss out the dress]

Sonia : What are you doing?

Arsène Lupin : Well, if you're going to stay in bed you won't need the dress.

  • Sonia : [to Chamerace, who has entered his bedroom to find her naked in his bed]  Stay out of here. Stay out of here!

Arsène Lupin : How do you do?

    Sonia : Close that door!

    Arsène Lupin : Certainly.

[closes door, staying inside the room]

Sonia : Won't you please go?

Arsène Lupin : Certainly. But first, let me ask, how do you like my bed?

Sonia : Well, I didn't mean to, really. I was cold.

Arsène Lupin : Oh, yes, it is a cold night for May. However, don't you think Paris is charming in the spring?

Sonia : Well, I prefer Russia. You see, I come from there.

Arsène Lupin : Really? How delightful! I have a passion for caviar. Was your father, the general - I presume your father was a general?

Sonia : Of the Imperial Army.

Arsène Lupin : Ah, yes. Was your father, the general, fond of caviar?

Sonia : He ate it on pancakes, for breakfast.

    Arsène Lupin : Did he?

    [They laugh]

Arsène Lupin : Stay for breakfast. We'll have caviar.

Sonia : Sir, aren't you overstepping the bounds of convention?

Arsène Lupin : My dear lady, didn't you leave those behind when you stepped into my bed?

Sonia : Oh, I assure you, my being here is no pleasure.

Arsène Lupin : Ah, but the night is still young.

    Sonia : Oh, sir!

[she re-arranges herself in the bed, and Chamerace can see her naked back]

Arsène Lupin : Pardon me, but I think your dress has slipped

    Sonia : I haven't any on.

Arsène Lupin : Is that a little Russian custom? Hmm?

  • Arsène Lupin : [to Sonia]  Do you want to go back to your solitaire, or would you prefer something that requires *two* people?

  • Arsène Lupin : You'd better watch it, gentlemen. And, uh, by the way, if he, uh, if he attempts to escape, perhaps you'd have to shoot.

    Sheriff's Man : To kill?

Arsène Lupin : Well, the reward said 'Dead or alive', didn't it?

  • Arsène Lupin : [rushing in with the Mona Lisa wrapped around his umbrella]  I've got it! I got it right under Guerchard's nose. Look! There she is, wrapped around my umbrella, but still smiling.

[He lets out his peculiar, snorting laugh]

  • Arsène Lupin : Gournay-Martin!

Gaston Gourney-Martin : Chamerace! When did you get down?

Arsène Lupin : Just a few minutes ago. I thought you were Arsène Lupin!

Gaston Gourney-Martin : And I thought you were!

Arsène Lupin : You, uh, appear to be robbing your own safe.

Gaston Gourney-Martin : No, no, no. You see, I have a lot of bonds in there. And I was a bit nervous. Bonds, they say, I got illegally. But nevertheless, I want to keep them.

Arsène Lupin : I don't blame you. It's a funny-looking safe you've got there. It, uh, has no combination.

Gaston Gourney-Martin : No, it hasn't. Open it.

    Arsène Lupin : What?

Gaston Gourney-Martin : Go on, open it.

    Arsène Lupin : All right.

[Lupin confidently reaches for the handle and gets electrocuted. He screams in pain]

Gaston Gourney-Martin : [laughing]  That's the electric current! Try to get away.

Arsène Lupin : Damn it, I can't! This is a great idea. I congratulate you.

    [He touches Gournay-Martin, zapping him]

    Gaston Gourney-Martin : That hurts!

Arsène Lupin : Yeah, doesn't it? Can't you get your hand away?

Gaston Gourney-Martin : No, I can't. Wait till I turn off the switch!

    [He does so. Lupin relaxes]

Gaston Gourney-Martin : Well, I'm very well protected against our friend Lupin, don't you think?

Arsène Lupin : I should say so. You know, you'd be just as well off if I weren't here.

  • Arsène Lupin : If you sleep through what I'm going to do to you, you're not the woman I think you are.

[He calmly pours a jug of water over Sonia, interrupting her feigned trance, then leaves]
