Then, a number of families from Chicago arrive in town with titles to the land occupied by Grace and the other settlers. Streeter has flown to coop, but Brand, as sheriff, has to declare the newcomers are the legal owners. And then has to find a way to settle the disputes to the satisfaction of all concerned.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- In Grass Valley, Brand Thompson accepts Jonathan R. Streeter's offer to become sheriff. Afterward, a group of local ranchers questions why they must work Streeter's land as their own while he postpones giving them their deeds of ownership, and Brand assures them that Streeter acts in good faith. Later, Brand chases a robber from Ropersville named Carver, who takes Grace Duncan hostage. Grace lives alone with her younger brother Tommy, who idolizes Brand. Brand is able to rescue Grace, and forces Carver to chop wood while he and Grace talk. When Brand leaves town, a group of men from Chicago arrive with legally purchased deeds to the land worked by the ranchers. Streeter, who was planning a swindle, is foiled because his men sold the deeds to the Chicago men too soon. Grace, who is ejected from her property, believes Brand knew of Streeter's plan. Streeter informs Brand that he must enforce the law, and Judge Cooper explains to Brand that Streeter's maneuvers were legal, but talks Brand out of resigning so that they may try to stop Streeter. Brand's deputies resign, however, after he confronts the crowd whom he earlier assured of Streeter's honesty. Brand refuses to deputize Streeter's men, but prevents a mob of ranchers from attacking. When Brand learns that Streeter has stolen his horse, Cooper writes a warrant for his arrest, but a mob keeps him from interfering with their revenge on Streeter. With a mob chasing them, Streeter's men abandon him, and Brand is able to capture him. Frightened, Streeter signs a pledge written by Cooper to buy back the deeds and return the land to the men who worked it. Cooper sends Brand to his office, where Grace and Tommy are waiting for him.
