Investors in media stocks can be forgiven for believing they have been living in End Times. For the past few years, the tech sector dominated the headlines, and was also where the biggest returns lay.
The widely used acronym Faang attached an aptly serpentine name to traditional investors’ angst. Where was the upside, the thinking went, for pay-tv providers, studios, movie theaters and cable network programmers in these times of massive disruption?
A closer look at the year-end numbers, though, shows that traditional media shares staged something of a comeback in 2019, even though high-fliers like Apple, Roku and Facebook posted bigger gains.
As 2019 trading officially ended Tuesday, we crunched the numbers for 30 core stocks. Some are pure media companies, of various sizes and compositions. Others are companies with significant holdings in telecom,...

This week saw the news that Neil Marshall’s Hellboy has had an outright disastrous box office run. With the movie raking in a paltry $40m worldwide on a $50m budget, it’s being yanked from cinemas and seems destined to end up forgotten and unloved. Given that the reboot was supposed to revitalize the franchise after the two Guillermo del Toro-directed movies slightly underperformed, you could be forgiven for thinking that the film will be the last we’ll see of Big Red for quite some time – perhaps ever. But dry those hankies, as we’re hearing from our sources that Netflix is planning a new Hellboy TV show.
There are no precise details as yet, but we’ve been told this is set to be another complete reboot (so goodbye David Harbour) and that Netflix wants the show to be bloody and mature. That last bit is...

Hellboy is back and star David Harbour tells us why he took on the challenge of playing Big Red.
In Hellboy, director Neil Marshall’s (The Descent) reboot of Mike Mignola’s comic book creation, Stranger Things star David Harbour takes over in the role first made popular by Ron Perlman in Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 adaptation and its 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
In this new entry, the dark fantasy elements are downplayed in favor of a gorier, more horror-oriented tale that pits the demonic title superhero against an ancient sorceress (Milla Jovovich) whose history delves deep into British mythology and the days of King Arthur and Merlin.
Harbour plays Hellboy as a younger, angrier and more impulsive creature, still unsure about his place in the world and much more at odds with his “father,” Professor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane), who rescued the young demon from...

Despite a general sense of disappointment that Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman weren’t going to bring us a third film in their series, many people took the announcement of the Hellboy reboot pretty well. After all, at this point, any movie featuring Big Red is better than none at all, and director Neil Marshall and the rest of the cast and crew talked a pretty good game about bringing the antihero back to his horror roots.
But then that first trailer landed and let’s just say it’s hard to remember a summer blockbuster preview that was so poorly received, with many feeling that rather than a new direction for the character, this looked like a bargain basement knock-off of what del Toro had given us, and with much much worse Hellboy makeup to boot.

Across all the many comic book movies and films based on graphic novels, there are a small group of actors who are so perfectly cast, that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role.
Think Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, or Heath Ledger as the Joker, or even Hugh Jackman, our lord and saviour, as the iconic Wolverine. Each figure brilliantly embodies their on-screen persona to the point that the line between actor and character becomes more than a little bit blurry.
And for many, Ron Perlman was Hellboy. So much so, in fact, that when David Harbour boarded the upcoming reboot, most people swore it off right away. It turns out that casting a new lead was the least of the film’s problems, though, as it’s apparently a complete mess from top to bottom.
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s currently sitting at a measly 10% and below,...

When the first trailer for the upcoming Hellboy reboot was shown off at New York Comic Con back in October, most people seemed pretty impressed by David Harbour’s fresh take on the titular antihero and the crazy world he calls home. But now that the general public have had a chance to feast their eyes on a teaser of their own, the reception isn’t quite so glowing.
Coming to us from Dog Soldiers and The Descent director Neil Marshall, the new Hellboy had been promoted as a darker affair than the Guillermo del Toro flicks, which made the one-liner-filled teaser and its ’80s dance pop soundtrack a pretty confusing experience. And while the footage has already drawn its share of supporters, most fans seem to have been left not knowing what to make of the whole thing.
But what do original stars Ron Perlman and Selma Blair think of it?...

The announcement that a new Hellboy film was being made and that Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman wouldn’t be involved wasn’t exactly greeted with open arms by fans. After all, del Toro’s widely considered to have nailed the tone of the comics with Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but due to both movies underperforming at the box office, studios refused to issue the green light for a third installment to round out the trilogy. In addition, Ron Perlman was pretty much perfect in the title role, making it difficult to imagine anyone else playing Big Red.
But we don’t have to imagine anymore, as we now have the very first trailer (seen below) for Lionsgate’s reboot, leaking online one day ahead of schedule. And while it will surely prove to split fans down the middle, it certainly has us curious, painting a...

That’s the catchy tagline accompanying Lionsgate and Neill Marshall’s upcoming Hellboy reboot, which has Stranger Things veteran David Harbour front and center as Big Red. It’s shaping up to be a pretty far cry from Guillermo del Toro’s beloved brace of fantasy-fueled epics, too.
For starters, the Hellboy of 2019 is said to be gloriously violent, while we’ve also heard that it’ll retain that demonic sense of fun which helped Mike Mignola’s comic book series earn its status as an instant classic. And as we await Lionsgate’s R-rated reimagining with fervent glee and anticipation, we’ve now received word that the very first trailer will be with us this Thursday. No exact time was given, but to amp up the excitement a bit, the studio’s dropped a brand new poster which you can feast your eyes on in the gallery below.

ABC’s Single Parents has picked a familiar and fitting face to play ex-wife to Taran Killam’s hapless Will.
TVLine has learned exclusively that fellow Saturday Night Live alum Vanessa Bayer will fill the recurring guest star role of Mia, Will’s ex. First appearing in a January episode of the freshman comedy, Mia is described as a “scarf-wearing, bracelets-jangling human rights lawyer who has spent the last five years saving lives abroad.” As such she regards Will’s life to be a breeze and undermines his parenting at every turn.

The announcement that Lionsgate was going ahead with a reboot of Hellboy was greeted with skepticism by fans. After all, we already had the perfect Hellboy in Ron Perlman, and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro never seemed to give up hope about finishing his trilogy with the character. But, as time went on, fans began to warm up to the idea of Big Red returning. David Harbour looked pretty damn great in the makeup, the teaser images were really cool and some of the casting turned heads.
Now, however, things have started to return to that original skepticism. Test screenings for the film have reportedly been pretty damn dire, with the reactions being summarized by Kc Walsh as: “Harbour tries his best but the dialogue, villain and story seem to be lacking.” Then there was that leaked snippet of the teaser. Hellboy is back, and judging by the trailer that dropped at New York Comic Con today, he’s making his return in style.
Look, I absolutely adored the Guillermo del Toro films and like many people, was pretty skeptical when David Harbour was cast as the titular character. After all, how could anyone do the role better than Ron Perlman? Thankfully, it seems like the Stranger Things star is up to the herculean task, as judging by the first reactions to the footage that we have here, he’s slipping into the shoes of Big Red quite comfortably.
Seriously, for a film that many had written off, the verdicts coming out of Comic Con are surprisingly good. Promising a more dark and edgy take on the character, it sounds as if Harbour’s got a strong hold of the role while many are praising the footage for being fun, exciting and forging its own path,...

The announcement of the Hellboy reboot was surely a bitter pill for Ron Perlman to swallow. He’s always talked about how much he loved playing the character and from all accounts, is a huge fan of Mike Mignola’s comics.
Ever since the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, both he and director Guillermo del Toro have been trying to make a third and final entry in their series, which would have finally gotten to grips with the impending apocalypse and Big Red’s involvement in it. With this reboot, however, those plans have obviously been scrapped, and while it’s an admittedly anticlimactic end to such a gripping and at times deflating saga, you can’t deny that this new take on the character looks very promising.
But why exactly did the producers decide to ditch Hellboy 3 and go with a reboot? Well, in a recent conversation with Deadline,...

We’re gunna’ have to wait that little bit longer before Big Red returns to the big screen.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate and Neil Marshall’s upcoming Hellboy reboot has been delayed by a full four months, meaning that the R-rated fantasy flick will now be with us on April 12th, 2019.
That takes it out of the relatively quiet January window (and away from Glass) to place it up against Warner’s Shazam! movie, given that the latter is due to open one week earlier on April 5th. The exact reason for this extensive delay is unclear, but with New York Comic Con scheduled to begin next weekend, we readily expect some fresh intel to emerge from the fiery depths of hell. Stay tuned for more.

Disney Channel’s new “High School Musical” series, which is being produced for Disney’s new as-yet unnamed streaming service, has a title and a plot. As revealed on Thursday, the 10-episode series will be called “High School Musical: The Musical,” and take a meta, docu-style approach to the franchise.
In “High School Musical: The Musical,” a group of students at fictional East High stage a performance of Disney’s “High School Musical” for their winter theater production. But as they plan the on-stage drama, they create as much drama off-stage.
Per Disney, each episode will include a song from the “High School Musical” trilogy of films, as well as on original song.
Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated screenwriter and former Broadway performer Tim Federle (“Ferdinand”) is executive producer with Oliver Goldstick (“Pretty Little Liars”).
