Why do we love kaiju movies so much? Is it the sight of an enormous creature stomping its way through a metropolis, tapping into our secret desires to see them leveled? Or the representation of nature’s wrath against humanity for its mistreatment of the planet?...

Last year, legendary filmmaker John Carpenter teamed up with Shout! Factory to host a kaiju movie marathon called Masters of Monsters, which consisted of the original Godzilla film, Rodan; Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, and The War of the Gargantuas. That marathon was re-run earlier this month. Now the folks at Far Out magazine have dug up a 1996 article from Film Comment magazine in which Carpenter named The War of the Gargantuas as “the ultimate Japanese monster movie” – and included it on a list of his seventeen favorite “guilty pleasure” movies. It’s a fun list, so we have it included below, with thanks to this site.
Carpenter started out the Film Comment guilty pleasures article by saying, “I wasn’t raised a Catholic, so guilt never played much of a role in my life. We Methodists don’t worry about guilt all that much. In terms of cinema, however, guilt has always been very important.

August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. Science fiction was larger than ever and giant ants, giant octopi, terror from beyond the stars, and...

Nicolas Cage has spoken to I09 about suiting up once again as Johnny Blaze in 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance:'
We're very excited for the new Ghost Rider film, where will the audience find (your character) Johnny Blaze in the next film?
He's become a lot more sarcastic, now that his head has been ignited. Unlike the first one where he was trying to keep it at bay. Now he's been living with the Ghost Rider for some time, there's a lot more irony with the character. His outlook isn't as quite naive as it once was. And also I'm very excited about what we're getting up to with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor [the directors], they are very original in terms of their film making. Mark is doing things I've never seen a director do before — filming on roller blades, hanging on wires — it's like a stunt man, camera operator and director all in one.

Nic Cage is talking a short break from filming Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance to help promote his latest film Season of the Witch which will hit theaters on January 7th. During some of the interviews he has talked highly on Gr:2 and its Crank directors. Here's what he told i09; It is a completely different film. The first one, which I won’t denigrate — I liked the first one, but it was almost like a fairy tale. Almost like a Disney fairy tale interpretation of Faust. This one is completely re-conceived, it’s not even connected to the first one, it’s a different origin sequence. But I think it will be a brand new experience. It has more adrenaline involved in the film making process itself, and in the movie when you see it. Again, I think the stuff we’re able to get into with Ghost Rider...

Nicolas Cage is doing press for his delayed film The Season of the Witch a month before it opens on January 7, presumably to avoid the holiday season crush. Inevitably, during a couple interviews he's talked about the sequel to Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which is currently in production with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank, Crank 2, Gamer) directing. Nic Cage said almost exactly the same thing in a couple interviews. To io9 [1] he explained the broad overview of this sequel: It is a completely different film. The first one, which I won't denigrate — I liked the first one, but it was almost like a fairy tale. Almost like a Disney fairy tale interpretation of Faust. The "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" news has been pounding the online community fast and furiously, thanks largely to the fact that directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are currently hard at work on the comic book adaptation's Romanian production set.
But it's leading man Nicolas Cage who is at the center of attention today, as the "Ghost Rider" star took some time out from his busy shooting schedule to discuss his goals, ideas and work on the superhero sequel during an interview with Collider.
"I have high hopes for it," Cage said of the sequel. "I’m very confident that something special is going to come out of this experience. You can just feel it on the set."
Cage also laid plenty of praise on top of his directors, describing the "Crank" filmmakers as unlike anybody he's ever worked with before.
"They’re total originals," he said. "Mark Neveldine...

There’s a solid chance that Ghost Rider 2 has already messed with your mind for simply existing. In the real world where things fall due to gravity, the sky is blue, and dogs definitely don’t live with cats, a movie failing as thoroughly as Ghost Rider did would ensure that it wouldn’t get a sequel. Not only is it getting one, it’s getting a reboot disguised as a sequel featuring the same main actor. Is your mind messed with yet? If not, please accept Nic Cage’s comments on the matter: I’m very excited about what we’re getting up to with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, they are very original in terms of their film making. Nicolas Cage has returned for a sequel not many were expecting given the response to the original Ghost Rider, but the character has been given another chance by producers and the fans and hoping it delivers. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is filming right now in Romania.
