Cyndi Lauper will have her last bout of fun, announcing her farewell tour more than four decades after launching her debut album, She’s So Unusual.
Dubbed the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, Cyndi Lauper will kick it off in Montreal in mid-October, hitting the States in Detroit a week later and continuing through until December 5th, where she will conclude her touring career in Chicago.
Cyndi Lauper, who turns 70 this month, has no doubt earned a proper farewell. Her 1983 debut album featured the singles “Girl Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time”, both of which earned Grammy nominations in the same year she took home Best New Artist. She followed that up with 1986’s True Colors. And who can forget “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough”, which we all know should have been nominated for an Oscar?

After a few years in limbo, the BAFTAs finally found a host to replace the much-missed Stephen Fry in David Tennant. The Doctor Who actor proved an amiable and funny emcee, although much of his humor would have gone way over the non-Brits in the audience, starting with a lengthy filmed skit riffing on his BBC TV series Staged, co-starring Michael Sheen. (You can watch it above.)
It was a night of surprises, not especially pleasant ones for the teams behind Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon, and there were no egregious upsets. Neither were there any of the usual technical nightmares that have plagued the event in the past.
Instead, there were lots of low-key but memorable moments, like Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr., dressed in a gray tail suit to collect his Best Supporting Actor award recalling his life in 30 seconds.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph was similarly charming on accepting her Best Supporting Actress award, swooning over presenter Chiwetel Ejiofor and bringing her Holdovers co-star Paul Giamatti to tears when she told him, “I cry every time I see your name.” Equally emotional were June Givanni, receiving this year’s Outstanding Contribution award; Samantha Morton, whose BFI Fellowship was awarded after filmed testimony from Tom Cruise; and the whole audience, who went wild for Still’s Michael J. Fox who handed out the Best Film award to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Wonka star Keegan-Michael Key, presenting, sustained a surprisingly funny attempt to pretend to be British, and, taking the first award of the night for Best Original Screenplay, husband and wife team Justine Triet and Arthur Harari joked that their murderous marital drama Anatomy of a Fall had taken on a life of its own.
All night, speeches were crisp and clean, with only the teams behind The Zone of Interest and 20 Days in Mariupol bringing politics into the conversation, even after Tennant gave the go-ahead by mentioning the recent murder of Alexei Navalny, subject of last year’s Best Documentary winner.
The musical numbers left a lot to be desired. Sophie Ellis-Bextor performed her Saltburn showstopper “Murder on the Dancefloor,” which is more than a few rungs down from Shirley Bassey doing “Diamonds Are Forever” in 2022. Meanwhile, Hannah Waddingham doing a slowed-down version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” wasn’t quite what the particularly touching obituary sequence was crying out for. By far the worst of all, though, was a comedy routine by Nick Mohammed performing as a sweaty light entertainer called Mr. Swallow. We must never think or speak of it again.

Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham performed a very emotional and heartfelt rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” at the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, adding a somber note to the British Academy’s big annual ceremony.
Organizers had announced a musical performance by Waddingham on the biggest night in British film, following the star’s Apple TV+ Christmas special Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas, but they didn’t announce details ahead of time.
Dressed in a black dress, the actress sang while pictures of some of the film industry greats who had died over the past year, including the likes of Michael Gambon and Carl Weathers.
The fact that Friends star Matthew Perry wasn’t shown in the segment led to criticism on social media. But BAFTA responded on X, saying: “Matthew Perry will be remembered in this year’s TV Awards ceremony.” The Academy also shared the...

“Oppenheimer” swept the BAFTAs on Sunday night, winning awards for director Christopher Nolan and actor Cillian Murphy as well as taking home the prize for best film.
Overall, the movie took home seven golden BAFTA masks, with “Poor Things” coming in second place with five wins.
BAFTA chair Sarah Putt opened the ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday night by welcoming the star-studded audience, which included Prince William, who arrived solo as his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, continues to recuperate at home following an operation. William, who is president of BAFTA, did not give a speech, no doubt in part because of renewed interest in his personal life following his father King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis last month.
In her speech, Putt said she was sending Catherine and the King “our very best wishes” before handing over to the night’s host, “Doctor Who” star David Tennant.

“And the BAFTA goes to… Oppenheimer” Those words were on BAFTA Film Awards ceremony presenters’ lips a total of seven times in London on Sunday at the ceremony, hosted by Scottish actor David Tennant (Doctor Who, Inside Man) at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in the British capital.
Those included the lips of Michael J. Fox, who unveiled the best film award for Oppenheimer after coming on stage to a huge welcome and standing ovation.

A lot of the best music comes from dark places. Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors album includes a tribute to a friend who died tragically. Sadly, the song did not perform well. Then, Lauper managed to accomplish what she wanted to do with a different song.
Cyndi Lauper wrote a song for ‘True Colors’ inspired by Burt Bacharach
During a 2019 Interview article, Lauper discussed the origin of her song “Boy Blue.” “At that time, there was a popular song called ‘That’s What Friends Are For,’ and one of my closest friends, Gregory, was dying of AIDS,” she said. “He said to me, “Cyn, you gotta write a song like ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ for me.” I’m thinking, ‘Oh, great. Burt Bacharach, one of the greatest American songwriters, wrote that.'” Lauper felt the pressure to match Bacharach’s talent.

The bets music is honest. Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” is one of the best pop ballads ever written. Lauper didn’t write the song, but she said it came from an earnest place in her life. The tune was also covered by one of the biggest alternative artists of the past 10 years.
Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colors’ was a tribute to her abused friend
“True Colors” was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, the same team behind Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” During a 2014 interview with The Denver Post, Lauper discussed what she was thinking when she sang her most famous ballad. “When I recorded that song, a very good friend of mine was dying from AIDS,” she said. “He had a horrific childhood. He had been abused.
“The main reason he was abused was because he was gay,” she added. “He became homeless really young. When he was dying,...

Based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" is set in the not-too-distant future when roving British teenage gangs have mutated into bizarre, ultra-violent, morals-free hedonists who commit crimes to their hearts' content. The protagonist is Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) a 15-year-old punk who drinks drug-laced milk before taking to the street with his gang of droogs to savagely and gleefully beat and assault anyone who passes into their field of vision. Alex is eventually arrested and put into prison where the government subjects him to bizarre new rehabilitation techniques in an attempt to turn his mind away from violence.
Throughout, Alex is depicted as clearly beyond redemption. He has no compassion and will never have compassion. When he reads about Jesus Christ being crucified, he imagines himself to be the Roman soldier whipping him. The government's brainwashing techniques only instill in him a...

Japanese manga series “Tiger Mask” is being adapted into a live-action feature for the international market by Italy’s Fabula Pictures and Brandon Box and Japan’s Kodansha.
The popular manga, which follows a ruthless professional Japanese wrestler named Naoto Date who after making it big in the U.S. returns to his country and fights against evil forces, previously inspired an anime TV series made by Japan’s Toei Animation.

“We are excited to be able to bring a new ‘Tiger Mask’ to global audiences, partnering with respected Italian filmmakers sharing the love and passion for ‘Tiger Mask’ with us, like Fabula Pictures and Brandon Box,” he added.

Too bad then that one of his dearest friends is secretly Jack the Ripper (David Warner) and uses the machine to escape justice by going into the future – 1979 San Francisco to be exact. Left with no choice and believing that he’s unleashed a monster upon a utopia (ha!), Wells pursues him through time, but winds up being a lot more out of his element than his nemesis.

“Dancing with the Stars” fans were surprised by Mira Sorvino‘s elimination on “Most Memorable Year Night.” In fact, no one who made their predictions last week here in our predictions center anticipated that result. Hardly anyone agreed with it either. When we polled our readers at the end of the night, only 5.88% said Sorvino was the celebrity who should have been eliminated. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.
Sorvino and her pro partner Gleb Savchenko performed a contemporary routine to “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper. It was all the more special because the dance featured Sorvino’s own daughter, whose birth marked Sorvino’s most memorable year. She received her best scores yet for the routine, including her first eight from Derek Hough, but at the end of the night she was third from the bottom of the leaderboard, meaning she still needed lots of viewer votes to ensure her safety.

Mira Sorvino might not have mastered the dancefloor, but she certainly knows her trivia, enough to see her win Wednesday (October 25) night’s edition of Celebrity Jeopardy! The Jeopardy! victory came just one night after the Oscar winner’s surprising exit from Dancing With the Stars, where she became the fifth person eliminated from the season. Sorvino, who was partnered with Gleb Savchenko for the ABC dancing competition series, performed a routine to Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” on Tuesday’s (October 24) episode, which included a guest appearance from Sorvino’s daughter, Mattea, who is also a dancer. Unfortunately, the dance only scored 22 out of 30, which put her and Savchenko in eighth place out of 10. There was still a chance Sorvino could make it through to next week after the fan vote, but it just wasn’t meant to be, as she and Savchenko were eliminated. “It’s been incredible,...

This article contains spoilers for the Oct. 24 episode of “Dancing With the Stars”
On Tuesday night’s episode of “Dancing With the Stars,” Mira Sorvino and her daughter recreated the trio dance from “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” and the first 10 scores were handed out.
Sorvino’s 18-year-0ld daughter Mattea, who is part of a dance company, joined her mom and her partner Gleb Savchenko for a far less goofy version of the much-gif-ed routine from the 1997 comedy. Bruno Tonioli said the routine, which was set to “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper was “beautiful,” and Carrie Ann Inaba said it “tugged on her heartstrings.” It earned the actress, who currently costars on “Shining Vale,” a 22/40 and her first “8” score of the season.

It’s been six months beloved judge Len Goodman passed, but Dancing with the Stars isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet.
Though Tuesday’s theme was Most Memorable Year, the Week 5 episode was really meant to honor Goodman, who died from prostate cancer in April at the age of 78. After airing a sentimental package featuring past pros talking about what an honor it was to be both complimented and criticized by Goodman, the episode then featured a dance tribute to “Moon River” that was waltzed to perfection by current pros and past faves Kym Johnson, Anna Trebunskaya, Karina Smirnoff, Edyta Sliwinska, Tony Dovolani, Louis van Amstel, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Mark Ballas.
It ended with the troupe gesturing to an empty middle chair on the judges’ dais. Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli wept.

Yellowcard’s career trajectory has been anything but ordinary. The Florida-bred, violin-assisted foursome’s signature hit, the nostalgic title track of their 2003 major-label debut Ocean Avenue, is now a beloved pop-punk classic. But years went by without another smash, and by 2017, with their career seemingly stalled out for good, they broke up. Last year, they came together for what was supposed to be a single performance at Chicago’s Riot Fest, only to realize they were on the brink of something big.

In 1991, the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise signed off – literally – with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country earning critical acclaim and the biggest box office for the franchise since The Wrath of Khan. With Star Trek – The Next Generation ending its successful seven-season run, the time was right to give the new crew the reigns to their big-screen franchise. But, all involved were wary of making what would be seen as just an extended episode. Thus the bold move was made to work in none other than James T. Kirk, who – gasp – would die in the movie’s climax, passing the torch to Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard. That’s right; it’s time to tackle Star Trek Generations!

Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie has released a “bold, poignant and powerful” Inuktitut cover of Metallica’s “Unforgiven” in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st.
Her version, titled “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven)”, is the third single off Inuktitut, Elisapie’s upcoming fourth solo album, out via Bonsound on September 15th. The emotionally charged adaptation pays tribute to the Inuit men of her community, and is also a nod to the time she interviewed Kirk Hammett, 60, from Metallica in the early ’90s.
“When I was 14 years old, I applied for a job at Tni, the first Inuit TV-radio broadcaster, and I was thrilled when I was chosen for the position! Everyone at the station dreamed big, and they put in a request for an interview with Metallica. The band was so loved in Salluit that we had to give it a shot,” said the Salluit, Quebec native, 46.

Elisapie, a Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter, plumbs new sadness in one of Metallica’s biggest, most emotional hits on her recording, “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven).” Where the metal band drew inspiration from Ennio Morricone soundtracks, Spaghetti Westerns, and family trauma for the Black Album hit, Elisapie keeps things quiet, as she sings the lyrics in the indigenous Inuktitut. The instrumentation includes banjo, traditional drums, bass saxophone, throat singing, and saw, in addition to guitar and synth.

What better way to come to know a public figure than to discover them in their own words, or, better yet, their own singing voice? Filmmaker Allison Ellwood seems drawn to that notion because she let it guide her as she crafted the smart and sentimental “Let The Canary Sing.” The new documentary is a colorful force of nature underscored by the fierce soundtrack of life, embodying the best parts of its subject in the name of nostalgic exploration. After all, music can tell beautiful stories, and this journey is no exception.
“Let The Canary Sing” chronicles the rise of legendary 1980s rock star Cyndi Lauper and the complications that came for her career along the way. Like many celebrity docs done in the past, this one tells Lauper’s complete story, from her upbringing in working class Brooklyn and Queens to her immersion into the world of music. The...

In her professional life, Cyndi Lauper has been a kaleidoscope of personae: ’80s pop hitmaker; New Wave fashion guru; proto-Third-Wave feminist; LGBTQ activist; Broadway composer and lyricist; chameleon powerhouse vocalist; and bubble gum punk Brooklynese comedian.
Alison Ellwood’s 140-minute Lauper rockumentary Let the Canary Sing uncovers yet another side of the iconic musician — master technician. Lauper’s older sister Ellen describes her as such toward the end of the doc, quaintly encapsulating the film’s thesis. You may think of Lauper as one or all of the above identities, but recognizing her precision as a producer seems to be the only true way to understand her artistry. And like any pop diva, her public image is just as engineered as her albums.
Let the Canary Sing is slight but competent, a “Cyndi by Cyndi” opportunity for the singer and a choice group of her family, friends and collaborators to nostalgically recount her biography.

When director Ben Affleck first approached William Goldenberg, his Oscar-winning go-to editor (“Argo”), to cut “Air,” the sports biopic about Nike’s revolutionary Air Jordan basketball shoe line, it was only a couple of months before shooting began. Yet Goldenberg had to wait a month before reading the script while Alex Convery finished his rewrite.
It was a tight turnaround, but it led to a fast and loose production that perfectly fit the film’s recreation of the scrappy, underdog culture at Oregon-based Nike in 1984, which was then on the verge of bankruptcy.
“It’s about taking risks and greatness,” Goldenberg told IndieWire. “It’s about a lot of things that people can relate to…breaking out of the mold. And what’s great about working on a film like this is I have to watch the movie a lot, and I never got tired of it.”

“Air” music supervisor Andrea von Foerster received a music playlist from Ben Affleck titled 1984. “It was literally my childhood,” she says of the song collection that featured classic ’80s hits including “Africa” by Toto, “Candy Girl” by New Edition and “Jump” by Van Halen.
The Affleck-helmed film, set in that same year, navigates Nike’s bid to land NBA player Michael Jordan and explores his groundbreaking sponsorship deal with the company.
That playlist from the director and star of the film was the springboard for the 23 needle drops and 18 score cues “Air” features. In curating the film’s needle drops, von Foerster wasn’t just using music to play against what was on screen — “the music was used as a showcase to tell a story,” she says.
Her goal was to use music from the year authentically, visually and musically where the lyrics would often match what was being seen on-screen.

In 1979, Paramount’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture hit theaters to a somewhat mixed reception from critics and audiences. Many had predicted that the film would be a big money loser because it had gone dramatically over-budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever made up to the point. In the end, the film eked out a profit. It did well enough that Paramount was willing to take another chance on the franchise. Still, their approach would be pretty different, drastically slashing the budget and hiring fewer A-listers behind the camera. But, to the surprise of all, this proved to be precisely the right move, with the resulting film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, a smash-hit that relaunched the franchise as a legitimate big-screen property and introduced the adventures of Kirk, Spock and McCoy to a whole new generation.

In 1992, four years before the death of a then-unknown singer named Eva Cassidy, and eight before she would achieve posthumous, worldwide fame, she had a dream goal for her career. “Eva had a fantasy of one day having a full orchestra back her up,” says Chris Biondo, the singer’s original arranger and bandmate. “To her, that was the greatest place you could be musically.”
In fact, she and Chris had a specific role model for her fantasy project: Natalie Cole’s album Unforgettable, a collection of standards that appeared the previous year which, thanks to the marvels of studio sorcery, created a duet between Natalie and her late father, Nat King Cole, on the title song. For Cassidy, such a project would have been impossible to finance at the time, nearly a decade before she would have two UK number one albums, a number one single with “What a Wonderful World...
