Massimo Morante — the guitarist whose moody, funky playing helped define Italian prog-rock group Goblin’s eerie soundtracks for horror cinema classics such as Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead — has died at the age of 69. The group confirmed the news “with a heavy heart” in a Facebook post.
His daughter, Valerie paid respects to her father and announced the funeral would take place this weekend in Rome. “It is with indescribable pain, a pain that trumps words, that breaks the breath and hammer the heart, that I announce the death of my father,...

While we’ve had many seasons and spinoffs for The Walking Dead, it’s never been definitely answered how the zombie virus happened in the first place. Even the 15 years or so of the original comic book series never gave fans a specific reason for the virus, meaning that there remain a lot of unresolved questions over the history of the Walking Dead universe. However, creator Robert Kirkman has recently provided an explanation for it. Well, sort of, anyway.
When asked on Twitter what created the walkers in the series, Kirkman simply remarked that the virus began with a “space spore.” This comment is a likely reference to the role of space radiation in the undead outbreak in George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, one of the main sources of inspiration for The Walking Dead and the zombie genre as a whole. Kirkman’s comment must be...

Far from a curse, Tobe Hooper's tiny budget made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a timeless horror classic...
In the summer of 1973, the cast and crew of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were suffering through what was, by most accounts, a thoroughly miserable shoot. The heat and humidity were almost unbearable; the interior location where much of the film's third act took place, an old farmhouse outside Round Rock, was dressed with animal bones and blood, which had begun to stink in the broiling Texas air. The stench was so bad that some crewmembers were throwing up outside between takes.

2016 was chock-full of big blockbuster releases, many of which either failed to make a sizable profit or were incredibly divisive among audiences. But out of the ashes rose a beautiful flower: the indie film. Yes, independent movies had a wonderful year, some even breaking per-theater records and making their way onto my favorites of 2016 list, which also includes a Denis Villeneuve film, a comic book series, collectibles, an excellent comprehensive horror documentary, and more.
Arrival: Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a beautiful take on language and how communication (or the lack of proper communication) can either doom or ensure our survival as human beings on this planet. The way Villeneuve tells a story is the perfect fit for a film like Arrival because its focus is small but the ideas are big, much like his previous works, Enemy, Sicario, and Prisoners.

Stories that started when the dead began to rise come to the end of their first arcs this Wednesday with Double Take’s release of Night of the Living Dead: Revival‘s #5 issues, but it’s only the dawn of a new beginning for many of the characters readers have fondly followed since last fall. To get an idea of what to expect in the #5 issues and beyond, we caught up with Sr. Story Editor and writer Michael Coast, who discussed the future for Evans County’s resilient residents.
Thanks for once again taking the time to answer some questions for us, Michael, and kudos to you and the creative crew for a stellar round of #5 issues in the Night of the Living Dead: Revival universe. Recognizing that it’s more than likely an unpopular opinion, I need to come clean and confess that I prefer Tobe Hooper’s 1986 sequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, to its predecessor, which I’m also quick to point out is an unparalleled masterpiece of the genre. This has everything to do with personal taste. Tobe Hooper is one of my favorite filmmakers of all-time, and while I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen his 1974 classic, I probably revisit Part 2 every year. It’s one of my very favorite horror movies.
The third film in a trilogy Hooper made for Cannon Films in the 1980s (the other two being the brilliantly bonkers Lifeforce and Hooper’s remake of Invaders From Mars, released just a couple of months before TCM2 in ’86), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 was the movie the director had to...

Horror veteran Tony Todd will voice the villainous Zoom in season 2 of The Flash. Also, a new poster teases Jay Garrick...
The Flash season 2 looks certain to expand the show's scale - the writers are adding a new primary antagonist called Zoom, possible sidekick Wally West and alternate-universe Flash Jay Garrick. Today, there's been news about two of those three things.
Firstly, we learned that horror movie veteran Tony Todd (pictured) will voice Zoom. Todd is perhaps best known for the Candyman films, and his lead role in Night Of The Living Dead.
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said this of the casting:
"Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader -- this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year,...

1981 was an amazing year for horror. An American Werewolf in London. The Beyond. The Evil Dead. The Funhouse. The Howling. The list goes on and on. However, one that always seems to fall through the cracks of time and memory is Dead & Buried.
Released in May 1981, Dead & Buried did not set any box office records. This is due to the fact that it is very hard to categorize. Is it a slasher ala Friday the 13th Part 2? No, but there are some gruesome and realistic deaths courtesy of late effects whiz Stan Winston. Is it a monster movie like The Howling? Not exactly, but the movie involves transformations (of a sort). Is there a mystery to solve? Definitely, and this is what drives the story forward and through the disparate elements at play.
60’s and 70’s TV survivor James Farentino stars as Dan Gillis, Sheriff of the seaside town of Potter’s Bluff.

Tom Towles may be best known for his role as Otis in Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer but the mans resume stretches far beyond that one glimmer. In fact Tom was a damn dedicated player in the game of horror. The prolific actor sports more than 60 projects on his ledger (with plenty of television work included) and a wealth of standout pictures can be found. Towles appeared in a number of Rob Zombie films including Halloween The Devils Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses. He also tackled roles in The Prophecy II Night of the Living Dead and Home Sick. He was passionate boasted amazing on screen presence and we fans appreciated that.

“Otis, plug it in!”
It’s been a tough week for horror fans. First Robert Z’Dar passed away, and now Tom Towles. The actor would have a cult following if he had co-starred in nothing else but Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer in 1986. His Otis was based on Ottis Toole, the vile drifter who, along with Henry Lee Lucas (played in the film by Michael Rooker), left a trail of bodies in their wake. Towles was scary-good as Otis, and went on to co=star in a number of cult horror films including Tom Savini’s Night Of The Living Dead remake, The Borrower, and Fortress. Towles became a regular for director Rob Zombie with roles in House Of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’S Rejects, and Halloween. He had not appeared in a film since 2008, but had become a staple on the horror movie convention circuit. He died...

[Editors Note: Given that we've already reviewed the Vinegar Syndrome release of Graduation Day and both discs are virtually identical bar the extras, we thought we'd review the Major difference between the two Blu-ray releases - the bonus feature on the UK disc, the documentary Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed]
It’s fair to say I’m a sucker for scream queen “documentaries”. Be they the T&A filled features such as Scream Queen Hollywood Hot Tub Party, more amateur-hour productions such as Donald Farmer’s shot-on-video Invasion of the Scream Queens, or the awesome scream queen interviews that featured in Stephen King’s World of Horror – if it features an interview with a scream queen then I’m there. I’m also a fan of the documentaries and Blu-ray extras produced by High Rising Productions – including their previously released slasher movie documentary: Slice and Dice: The Slasher Movie Forever.
Put the two together and… I’m in filmic heaven!
Directed by UK-horror scene stalwart Calum Waddell and hosted by scream queen Debbie Rochon (Terror Firmer, Tromeo and Juliet) Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed features, in a change of pace for horror documentaries, especially those focusing on females in the genre,...

Released in 1981, Graduation Day has become a favourite of slasher movie fans thanks to its plasma-spurting set pieces, maniacal mystery-killer storyline and a cast of cult celebrities that includes Christopher George (City of the Living Dead), Vanna White (Wheel of Fortune) and the perennially topless Scream Queen Linnea Quigley. Now set for a Blu-ray release, with a stunning print restored and re-mastered from a colourful 4k scan, from the folks at 88 Films, Graduation Day will arrive in the UK with an array of newly created special features from High Rising Productions including a new feature length documentary entitled Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed.

Picking up where the big studios have been leaving off, home video label Twilight Time has for the last few years been releasing some pretty damn awesome horror flicks on Blu-ray, including the original Fright Night and Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead.
Joining them next is the 1988 version of The Blob, headed our way just in time for Halloween! As the company just revealed, October 14th will mark the Blu-ray release of The Blob.
Joining it on Blu will be a handful of other horror films, including Audrey Rose (1977), The Believers (1987), Man Hunt (1941), Under Fire (1983), and The Vanishing (1993).
Typical for Twilight Time, all of the releases will be limited with The Blob being cut off at 5,000 copies and the others limited to only 3,000.
Directed by Chuck Russell, The Blob is one of the better horror remakes we've yet seen, centering on a strange pink life...

Hello, and welcome to The Best Of Number Two here at The Liberal Dead. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. I decided it would be a theme about the best second films in a franchise/series. Expect discussion about Metamorhosis: The Alien Factor, The Devil’s Rejects, C.H.U.D. II, Blade II, Sleepaway Camp II, Amityville 2, Island of the Fishmen, The Dark Knight, Final Destination 2, House II and more.

Stuffed with straw, dressed in rags and left to twist in the breeze, the typical mild-mannered scarecrow may not be built to frighten anything larger than your average feathered pest... but that hasn't stopped these eerie effigies from coming to life in our nightmares. For generations, this image of the harvest has been associated with the darker, colder days to come, so it wasn't long before spooky tales were being spun about evil scarecrows wandering the fields, intent on reaping something more substantial than corn. Cinematic scarecrows have come a long way since the lovable Wizard of Oz character, but some of them might still be looking for a brain... maybe even the one that's still in your skull. Let's look at some of the all-time scariest movie scarecrows ever to stalk the fields by moonlight... “Bubba” (Dark Night of the Scarecrow, 1981) This chilling made-for-tv classic presents one of the...

Woodhaven Production Company and Chad A. Verdi Productions have worked with some of the biggest names in horror, and now they are bringing in two more genre legends to star in their upcoming film Almost Mercy, written and directed by Tom DeNucci.
Both Bill Moseley and Kane Hodder will be featured prominently in the film.
Previously Woodhaven has featured such stars as Robert Englund in Inkubus, William Forsythe and Michael Madsen in Infected, Michael Berryman and Eric Roberts in Self Storage, and Tony Todd and Godsmack's Sully Erna in Army of the Damned just to name a few. Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

Well, we’ve already had two looks at the far-distance future at the multiplex so far this year. Both Oblivion and After Earth show the “big blue marble” as a hostile, toxic terrain unable to support human life (similar themes pop up in Elysium in just a few weeks). Picking up exactly where the original movie finished some thirty seven years earlier, Texas Chainsaw is a direct sequel to Hooper’s 1974 classic and opens with the aftermath of the titular massacre and the consequences for the Sawyer family of having allowed...
