Jennifer Garner was known for portraying the superhero Elektra in both Daredevil and her titular film. But before she nabbed the role, Stana Katic had her eyes set on the character as well.

Katic is no stranger to superhero projects. She’s voiced some of comic books’ most iconic characters across a few forms of media. This included playing Talia Al Ghul in the video game Batman: Arkham City, and Wonder Woman in the animated film Justice Society: World War II. She even felt her character in Castle, Kate Beckett, was a superhero in her own right.
“I think she’s like a female superhero on television, and we’re slowly exploring more and more of that,” Katic once told Collider. “She’s got a tremendous amount of integrity. I’ve gotten to do more stunts lately, which is really cool.

Scarlett Johansson has been a star in a wide variety of films over the past thirty years. She had a prosperous early career, starring in films such as Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer (1998) and Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World (2001). However, she also had the unpleasant experience of hearing fans boo one of her career’s best films.
Yes, we are discussing Under the Skin. Despite the negative feedback, the talented actress did not let it bring her down. Instead, she sought sound advice that helped her keep things in perspective. Her career has seen critical and commercial peaks and troughs over the last 20 years, some of which are not necessarily aligned.

If Jane Austen were alive today, and if for some baffling reason she wrote film criticism instead of brilliant novels, she'd probably say it is a truth universally acknowledged that a film that makes a fortune must be in want of a sequel.
Sure enough, no matter how much the industry changes, the desire to capitalize on a hit film by making another one just like it, rubber-stamped for audience familiarity, must be overwhelming. The history of cinema is littered with sequels and for each one that audiences remember — for better or worse — there's at least one that's almost completely forgotten, even if they're the sequel to a film that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Indeed, there are more forgotten Best Picture sequels than you might expect. George C. Scott reprised his Oscar-winning role as General George S. Patton 16 years later, in the TV movie "The Last Days of Patton.

A new photo of the Xbox Series X processor suggests Microsoft has ambitious next-gen plans.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has tweeted out a picture of the Xbox Series X processor that has everyone talking.
Actually, Spencer did more than just tweet out a picture of the processor. He's gone so far as to make the photo of that processor his Twitter profile image. It's a somewhat strange move that Spencer made with little fanfare, but little about this season of next-gen console reveals has been "traditional."
In any case, there are two things about this photo that are catching everyone's attention. First off, it seems that the words "Project Scarlett" are engraved directly onto the chip. Microsoft has used the "Project Scarlett" and "Xbox Series X" phrases in the past when referring to their next-gen plans, but a recent clarification seemed to indicate that Series X is...

It took three directors, seven writers, 1,500 extras and one obsessed producer named David O. Selznick to make the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind.
Selznick bought the rights to author Margaret Mitchell’s 1,037-page epic Civil War romance that finds spoiled Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) pining for the melancholy Ashley (Leslie Howard) while falling into a tempestuous relationship with the arrogant Rhett Butler (Clark Gable).
Selznick wanted only Gable for the role and waited two years until he became available. However, finding the perfect Scarlett was a chore as he screen-tested 33 actors before signing Leigh, a relatively unknown British beauty. He hired screenwriters only to fire them,...

Gone With the Wind is now gone from a Memphis, Tennessee, movie theater where it was annually screened for the past 34 years — and fans have mixed feelings about it.
The 1939 film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel of the same name — which tells the story of plantation Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh)’s love affair with Confederate soldier Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods — has been pulled from The Orpheum Theatre’s 2018 summer movie series.
Though it had been a part of The Orpheum’s annual summer movie series for years, complaints from an Aug.

More Best Picture Oscar winners have had sequels than you may think. This lot, in fact...
There’s still an element of snobbery where sequels to certain films is concerned. Whereas it’s now almost compulsory to greenlight a blockbuster with a view of a franchise in mind, it’s hard to think of most Best Picture Oscar winners being made with a follow-up in mind. Yet in perhaps a surprising number of cases, a sequel – or in the case of Rocky, lots of sequels – have followed.
These cases, in fact…
All Quiet On The Western Front (1930)
Followed by: The Road Back
Don’t be fooled into thinking sequels for prestigious movies are a relatively new phenomenon. Lewis Milestone’s 1930 war epic All Quiet On The Western Front, and its brutal account of World War I, is still regarded as something of a classic. A solid box office success,...

Susan Hayward. Susan Hayward movies: TCM Star of the Month Fiery redhead Susan Hayward it Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Month in Sept. 2015. The five-time Best Actress Oscar nominee – like Ida Lupino, a would-be Bette Davis that only sporadically landed roles to match the verve of her thespian prowess – was initially a minor Warner Bros. contract player who went on to become a Paramount second lead in the early '40s, a Universal leading lady in the late '40s, and a 20th Century Fox star in the early '50s. TCM will be presenting only three Susan Hayward premieres, all from her Fox era. Unfortunately, her Paramount and Universal work – e.g., Among the Living, Sis Hopkins, And Now Tomorrow, The Saxon Charm – which remains mostly unavailable (in quality prints), will remain unavailable this month. Highlights of the evening include: Adam Had Four Sons (1941), a sentimental but surprisingly...

Vivien Leigh ca. late 1940s. Vivien Leigh movies: now controversial 'Gone with the Wind,' little-seen '21 Days Together' on TCM Vivien Leigh is Turner Classic Movies' star today, Aug. 18, '15, as TCM's “Summer Under the Stars” series continues. Mostly a stage actress, Leigh was seen in only 19 films – in about 15 of which as a leading lady or star – in a movie career spanning three decades. Good for the relatively few who saw her on stage; bad for all those who have access to only a few performances of one of the most remarkable acting talents of the 20th century. This evening, TCM is showing three Vivien Leigh movies: Gone with the Wind (1939), 21 Days Together (1940), and A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Leigh won Best Actress Academy Awards for the first and the third title. The little-remembered film in-between is a TCM premiere. 'Gone with the Wind' Seemingly all...

Seventy-five years after the premiere of "Gone With the Wind" (on December 15, 1939), it seems that nothing -- not the passage of time, not the movie's controversial racial politics, not the film's daunting length, and not even the release of certain James Cameron global blockbusters -- can diminish the romantic Civil War drama's stature as the most popular movie of all time.
The film is certainly a formidable artistic achievement, a cornerstone of movie history, and a highlight of a year so full of landmark films that 1939 has often been called the greatest year in the history of Hollywood filmmaking. Each viewing of the four-hour epic seems to reveal new details. Still, even longtime "Gwtw" fans may not know the behind-the-scenes story of the film, one as lengthy and tumultuous as the on-screen romance between Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). It was the first color film to win the Best Picture Oscar and is ranked as one of the greatest movie of all time by the American Film Institute. In its first four years of release the film sold 59.5 million tickets, a number equal to half the population of the United States in 1939 and according to Box Office Mojo it’s the highest grossing film of all time when adjusted for ticket price inflation.
Today, Gone with the Wind celebrates its seventy-fifth anniversary as “the most iconic film of all time.”
Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, the story of Southern Belle Scarlett O’Hara and her torrid affair with blockade runner Rhett Butler remains so popular it has motivated legions of fans, called Windies, to gather in period costume in author Margaret Mitchell’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
It even inspired one of the most famous television parodies of all time.

20. Love/Chloe in the Afternoon (1972)
Directed by: Éric Rohmer
Originally titled “Love in the Afternoon,” but released in North America as “Chloe in the Afternoon,” this Rohmer film is a tale of possible infidelity, seen through the eyes of a conflicted man. Frédéric (Bernard Verley) is a successful young lawyer who is happily married to a teacher named Hélène (Françoise Verley), who is pregnant with their second child. While Frédéric is in a considerably good place in his life, he still struggles with the loss of excitement he had before he married, when he could sleep with whomever he chose. It wasn’t so much the sex that thrilled him, but the chase itself. Still, he feels that these thoughts and fantasies, paired with his refusal to act upon them, only proves that he is completely dedicated and in love with his own wife. That is, until he meets Chloé...

‘Gone with the Wind’ actress Mary Anderson dead at 96; also featured in Alfred Hitchcock thriller ‘Lifeboat’ Mary Anderson, an actress featured in both Gone with the Wind and Alfred Hitchcock’s adventure thriller Lifeboat, died following a series of small strokes on Sunday, April 6, 2014, while under hospice care in Toluca Lake/Burbank, northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Anderson, the widow of multiple Oscar-winning cinematographer Leon Shamroy, had turned 96 on April 3. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1918, Mary Anderson was reportedly discovered by director George Cukor, at the time looking for an actress to play Scarlett O’Hara in David O. Selznick’s film version of Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller Gone with the Wind. Instead of Scarlett, eventually played by Vivien Leigh, Anderson was cast in the small role of Maybelle Merriwether — most of which reportedly ended up on the cutting-room floor. Cukor was later fired from the project; his replacement, Victor Fleming,...

It's the highest-grossing movie of all time, and now "Gone With the Wind" is getting a prequel -- in book form, anyway.
The New York Times reports that a new novel, called "Ruth's Journey," will debut in later this year and tell the story of "Wind"'s Mammy character, played by Oscar winner Hattie McDaniel in the 1939 film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's 1936 book. Mammy was the slave owned by Scarlett O'Hara's family, known for her loyalty and her quick wit.
Author Daniel McCaig, who wrote "Ruth," told the Times that there are "three major characters in 'Gone With the Wind,' but we only think about two of them."
"Scarlett and Rhett are familiars, but when it comes to the third, we don't know where she was born, if she was ever married, if she ever had children," McCaig said. "Indeed, we don't even know her name."

Atlanta does give a damn about Gone with the Wind – and you can take in the museums, southern homes and hotels that are connected to Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the film, which celebrates its 75th birthday this year
Margaret Mitchell House
The first port of call for Gone With The Wind fans, thanks to its central location in midtown, the ground floor of this redbrick house is a museum that includes the apartment where Margaret Mitchell wrote most of her novel. Mitchell and her second husband, John Marsh, occupied one of 10 apartments crammed into the Tudor-revival building she nicknamed The Dump. The apartment's two small rooms plus a galley kitchen and bathroom look much as they would have when Mitchell lived there between 1925 and 1932. Further rooms have displays of photographs of Mitchell and there is a half-hourly guided tour, which talks you through her childhood and how...

Yesterday’s announcement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that the The Wizard of Oz will be celebrated at this year’s Oscars was met with widespread enthusiasm. After all, it’s one of Hollywood’s most beloved films, multiple generations have grown up singing its tunes, and it’s celebrating its 75th anniversary.
But The Wizard of Oz wasn’t the only classic movie to come out in 1939. That prolific Hollywood year also boasted Frank Capra’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, John Ford’s Stagecoach, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Ninotchka (“Garbo laughs!”), Gunga Din, William Wyler...

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the winners for the 2013 Eda (Excellent Dynamic Activism) Awards! And predictably, by now, Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" took the top honors with McQueen taking home the best director trophy, and Lupita Nyong'o the best supporting actress honor.
The great team of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for "Dallas Buyers Club" emerged victorious with their wins for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively.
Nicole Holofcener's "Enough Said" won two for best woman director and woman screenwriter for Holofcener.
Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," on the other hand, did not get love...at all! It won the Hall of Shame and The Movie You Wanted to Love But Just Couldn't awards. Its star, Cameron Diaz took home the Actress Most in Need of a New Agent award. Yikes! But they're true though!

I have a list of movies that is as malleable as a rubber band. Okay, certain movies, such as The Bridge on the River Kwai or The Searchers or The Best Years of Our Lives are always on that list, but their positions- 1, 2, 3, and so on- tumble around in my mind like clothes in a dryer. Other movies appear and disappear like the crew of the Enterprise on the transporter pad.
Gone With the Wind, for instance. This is a movie that hops on and off my list all the time. On the list because of the incredible “brought to full life” performances and spectacle, and off the list because, as a devotee of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer-winning novel, in which all the characters are given full, rich personalities, I can’t stand the way Scarlett is portrayed in the second half of the movie; this is a product of Victor Fleming’s direction,...

Timothy Dalton has been a part of many stories, but none quite like "Toy Story."
That's why the former James Bond is happy to reprise his "Toy Story 3" voice role as overtly theatrical hedgehog Mr. Pricklepants in ABC's new, animated Disney/Pixar special "Toy Story Of Terror!" Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The Halloween-season tale - setting the other toys on a search after one of their own vanishes during a road trip - also restores Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as cowboy Woody and spaceman Buzz Lightyear, with Don Rickles, Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Michael Keaton and Wallace Shawn among other returnees. Carl Weathers ("Rocky") is a voice-cast newcomer.
Dalton has many stage classics in his background, encompassing works by William Shakespeare and Noel Coward, so he admits he has great fun with Mr. Hedgehog's taking-himself-too-seriously mode.

This fall it would seem, that for women in film and TV, things are looking up. The Emmy Awards just set records by having the most number of female directors nominated for TV. There were a whopping five female nominees in the category of episodic comedy/variety TV, and Gail Mancuso won for directing an episode of Modern Family. It is of note that the last time a female took home this prize was in 1993. There were also a handful of women nominated for writing. Abi Morgan won for her work on The Hour, while Tina Fey and Tracey Wigfeld won for an episode of 30 Rock. In terms of drama, Jane Campion was sadly overlooked for her direction of the stunning miniseries Top of the Lake. Yet, all told, this year’s nominations pitifully break records for female nominees—“pitifully” because it’s 2013, the Emmy Awards are 65 years old, and...

Award-winning actor renowned for her work on Broadway and roles in classic films such as East of Eden and The Haunting
Unable to make sufficient money from her novels, the great American writer Carson McCullers took advice from Tennessee Williams and allowed one of her masterpieces to be adapted for the theatre. The resultant success of The Member of the Wedding (1950) widened her fame, and made a Broadway star of Julie Harris, who has died aged 87.
The play's main character is Frankie Addams, a gawky 12-year-old who longs for companionship and the "we of me". Although the second juvenile role, in what is essentially a three-hander, went to a child actor, Brandon de Wilde, the complex part of Frankie fell to Harris, who was then 24. What I said last time about the summer being a fairly quiet time for the streaming world, please disregard. Rather than wait for the autumn when people are more inclined to slump on a sofa in front of the tube, Netflix, Lovefilm and a new contender have decided that everyone just loves good movies and TV and so have flooded the marketplace with good content in a battle to outdo one another. The winner again is you the consumer and the hardest part may be to actually choose just one of these outlets to subscribe to.
That new contender I talked about is Sky, who has thrown their hat into the ring with Now TV, which is essentially an on demand version of their Sky Movie channels available over the internet. If you have seen the Now TV website and thought they didn’t actually have much content then think again.

James Hart Dyke has depicted secret service agents on covert missions. Now he has commemorated the most famous spy of all
When James Hart Dyke was asked by the head of MI6 to paint a series of studies of the real work of foreign secret service officers last year, he was keen to show just how hard and low-key their lives were. "It's not James Bond," he said.
Well, now it is. Hart Dyke has since been recruited to chronicle the long life of 007. The producers of the James Bond films, Barbara Broccoli and Eon Productions, commissioned Hart Dyke to paint each of the six Bond actors in the role as part of the celebration of 50 years of the dynamic franchise.

Twenty fours months and a hot new producer can change everything. It had names like Shia Labeouf, Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johnasson and Michael Shannon attached, but circa January 2010, John Hillcoat's "Lawless," then known as "The Wettest County" or "The Promised Land" had fallen apart.
But thanks to Megan Ellison's fledgling Annapurna Pictures -- a company that the L.A. Times described as currently "energizing the indie film world" this weekend -- the picture, with a mostly new cast, was brought back to life and currently is one of the biggest buzzed about films at Cannes (read our review here). So it makes sense that Hillcoat would stick around with his new patron saint. And so as we revealed earlier in the year, Annapurna Pictures is also producing a relatively old Hillcoat project from 2009, the Lapd police drama, "Triple Nine."

Fellow ComicMixer Bob Greenberger recently talked about To Kill A Mockingbird a couple days ago as he prepares to teach his class. To Kill A Mockingbird is, as I expect all of you to know, a masterpiece of American literature concerning the racial tensions and bigotries of a small town in Alabama during the Depression – but more important, it is a study of the nature of good and evil, of both the morality and immorality inherent in all of us.
Starring Gregory Peck as the lawyer Atticus Finch who defends the black man accused of raping a white woman, the movie is a landmark picture, and – in my opinion – a touchstone for how to adapt a brilliant novel to the screen. Also my opinion: Peck’s greatest role.

Tony Richardson's Crimean war drama is not totally off the map in terms of historical accuracy, but it is a bloody bore
The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968)
Director: Tony Richardson
Entertainment grade: D
History grade: B
The Charge of the Light Brigade was led by the seventh Earl of Cardigan on 25 October 1854, as part of the Crimean war.
Politics
During the Battle of Balaclava, the British army was commanded by Lord Raglan, and the Light Brigade of cavalry by Lord Cardigan. Ignore the emerging knitwear theme: this was serious stuff. The Crimean war was fought against the Russians by a joint British, French, Ottoman and Sardinian force.
This is explained here with animations in the style of Punch cartoons by Richard Williams. So the Turkish state (represented, of course, by a turkey in a fez) is molested by a Russian bear, awakening the British lion. The animations get steadily more surreal,...

If you look at Hollywood actors that dies a lot in movies, Sean Bean must be up there with one of the highest death counts going! If you see a movie or TV series with him in, more than likely he’ll be dead before the credits begin to roll!

In addition to being Boromir, Ned Stark, and 006, the man has had unnumerable classic roles, yet has flown mostly under the radar for much of his career. But if you need a tough but good looking dude to glower menacingly and hurt people, either for the angels or the devils, then Sean Bean is your man.
The downside is that, well, he dies a lot. A Lot. It's like he entered the extra lives code and is determined to use every single last damn one of them. And thus, the wickedly brilliant Harry Hanrahan has given us this most precious of gifts -- an entire video dedicated to nothing but Sean Bean death scenes. It should go without saying that spoilers abound, so beware -- it's basically an entire video of spoilers. But it is so worth your while. Trust me on this.

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

22:18 to the Oscars! Sandra Bullock is Red Hot! Can't wait for the Academy Awards! Christian Bale and his beard!
12:34 to the Oscars! Different actors reveal their Oscar picks!
Commercial Break: Tomorrow, Britney Spears reveals...something! On Good Morning America :wink
4:57 to the Oscars! So apparently, Roberto Benigni's heartfelt acceptance speech is the best, next was Tom Hanks' Best Actor speech when he won for "Philadelphia" in 1994
The Oscars is about to start!!!!
5:30 The 83Rd Annual Academy Awards
I know I'm a sucker for Oscar montage! I am I am!
So James Franco and Anne Hathaway are doing a Billy Crystal type of open where they are melded into the famous scenes of the Oscar-nominated films. So Alec Baldwin was the surprise guest! Is Billy Crystal going to show up?
I kind of like the "True Grit" bit!
Morgan Freeman...another surprise guest!
Aw..."Back to the Future!

Photo: AMPAS // RopeofSilicon.com The day has finally arrived. I opened the RopeofSilicon Contenders section in April of 2010 and all that's left on the Awards Schedule are tonight's Oscars and I am happy to say you are in for approximately six hours of non-stop commentary from not only myself, but also from RopeofSilicon resident Box-Office Oracle Laremy Legel as we will tag team this year's red carpet and ceremony with a live blog like none we've ever done before as everything you could possibly want from the show will be available right here, in one single spot.
The live blog will be posted with up-to-the-second commentary with each post having either my name in red or Laremy's name in blue. All winner announcements will be highlighted like this so they will be easy to spot as well as they'll be listed in the right-hand-column as they are announced and the...

Back again for the night of drunken celebrities, Ricky Gervais insulting them and a few awards being handed out at the same time. Yup, it's going to be a lot of fun even if the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is currently being sued for accepting pay-offs for votes. This is the Golden Globe Awards, the most relaxed of all the "major" award shows and I am going to be here for every minute of it.
Over the next few hours (and pages) I will be covering the 2011 Golden Globes live with up-to-the-minute commentary and winners updated in the right-hand-column as soon as they are announced. On top of that, winners will also show up on the official RopeofSilicon Twitter page as well.
This is my third year live-blogging the Globes and if you are here early you can check out previous installments at the following links to get an idea...
