Denzel Washington is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors who has graced the silver screen with many acclaimed performances to his credit. The actor has played heroic characters for most of his career in impressive films such as Mo’ Better Blues, Philadelphia, Courage Under Fire, and Glory winning an Oscar for the latter.
Denzel Washington as Easy Rawlins in Devil in a Blue Dress
His second Oscar win for Best Actor came with his antagonistic turn as Alonzo in Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day. Washington had never played a sleazy and morally complicated character like Alonzo before. However, he was vying to play one much before that film and one such antagonistic performance that he was envious of was of Don Cheadle in Devil in a Blue Dress.

Is Marvel combatting superhero fatigue by incorporating aspects of classic cinema? Not yet apparently, but Ryan Reynolds seemed very interested in doing so at one point. Speaking to Empire for a cover feature on “Deadpool & Wolverine” in next week’s issue, Reynolds told them his first pitch to Kevin Feige for the film was a “‘Rashomon’ story about Wolverine and Deadpool and something that they got into together, but told from three completely different perspectives.”
For context, “Rashomon” is a 1950 Jidaigeki drama from Akira Kurosawa that was the first Japanese film to receive international acclaim, winning the Golden Lion at the 1951 Venice Film Festival, as well as an Honorary Oscar in 1952. The film tells the story of how a samurai was murdered, multiple times through multiple vantage points. Its plot has been repurposed in a number of films and television series over the decades including “The Outrage,” “Courage Under Fire,...

Filmmaker Edward Zwick, whose credits include About Last Night, Glory, Legends of the Fall, The Siege, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Love & Other Drugs, Pawn Sacrifice, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (not to mention co-creating Thirtysomething), recently published a memoir called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood (pick up a copy Here). This book contains some very interesting passages – like the one on Zwick’s Jack Reacher regrets, and another where he reveals how impressed Denzel Washington was by Matt Damon’s performance when they were on the set of Zwick’s 1996 film Courage Under Fire.
Zwick wrote, “As we finished Matt’s coverage, Denzel caught my eye and nodded approvingly. Later, he took me aside. ‘Who is that kid?’ he asked. I told him it was Matt’s first big role. ‘Damn,’ he said. ‘Better get my game on. He almost blew me off the screen.

Matt Damon was one of many actors who admired Taxi Driver star Robert De Niro. But he once joked that Raging Bull made him question his admiration for the actor for a funny reason.
Why Matt Damon once joked he hated seeing Robert De Niro gain weight in ‘Raging Bull’ Robert De Niro and Matt Damon | George Pimentel/WireImage
Damon knows what it’s like to change his physique for a film role. He’s been experimenting with his body for movies since before hitting his stride with Good Will Hunting. He famously jeopardized his health after losing 50 pounds for Courage Under Fire. But for his 2009 feature The Informant, Damon was required to take the opposite approach to his body. Instead of losing weight, he gained weight to fit the large physique of his character. It was also a much more enjoyable process, as he was able to eat whatever he wanted.

Matt Damon has been a working actor pretty much since his days in Courage Under Fire and Goods Will Hunting. But the film industry’s changing landscape soon made it difficult for Damon to do the films he was interested in.

Damon has usually enjoyed steady work in cinema that’s always kept him busy. It once wasn’t uncommon to find Damon in several films even within the same year. But the film industry has gone through significant changes throughout the years, which made studios more dependent on big-budget features with more blockbuster appeal.
In an interview with Hot Ones, Damon theorized how the decline in DVD sales and technology helped facilitate this shift.

Matt Damon went through great lengths for his starring role in the 1996 feature Courage Under Fire. But transforming for his character the way that he did came at a physical and mental price.
Matt Damon spent years on Ptsd medication after his role in ‘Courage Under Fire’ Matt Damon | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Courage Under Fire was a very important film for Damon at the time. Damon played a former soldier and medic who was traumatized from the experiences he faced in a war. Damon’s character turned to drugs to curb that trauma, which later led to extreme addiction. The actor was willing to do whatever it took to prepare for the role, including losing 40 pounds to achieve his character’s emaciated look.
But losing all of that weight so quickly came with long term physical complications. In a resurfaced interview with Film Scout, Damon revealed he ate excessively after filming the movie.

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.

Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.
Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.
Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

Hollywood may be grappling with the volume of TV content being made these days for established and emerging streaming platforms, but Universal Studio Group boss Pearlena Igbokwe sees that surge in programming as only good news for TV lovers.
“Can there ever been too much TV? I don’t think so. Obviously all of us can’t watch everything. But the fact is there’s so much choice for everyone, you can find anything that you love, that you’re looking for, on television these days,” Igbokwe, the Usg chairman, told the Banff World Media Festival during a keynote address on Monday.
Of course, people only have so much time to watch TV as that competes with other digital media passions, like audio podcasts and gaming, and the demands of life itself, she warned. “That’s why if you’re making TV shows,...

Jo Koy’s comedy film “Easter Sunday” has released its first trailer, giving a first glimpse into the antics of a loving, chaotic Filipino American family and the large ensemble cast who plays them.
Jo Valencia (Jo Koy) is in for a weekend of good old-fashioned family fun when he and his son (Brandon Wardell) head home for Easter Sunday – “like the Filipino Super Bowl.” A single father and comedian, Jo is famous for his famous beer commercial tagline (“Let’s get the party started babaaaay!”). His career is a source of confusion and hilarity in his family; when he tells his mother (Lydia Gaston) he’s going to film a pilot, she thinks he’s going to play “a pilot on a TV show.” Back home, he runs into an old flame (played by Tiffany Haddish), tells jokes at church and spends time mediating feuds at various family functions,...

Exclusive: National Geographic is making the Oscar-shortlisted documentary The First Wave available for free for 48 hours, beginning tomorrow. Matthew Heineman’s film, shot in a Queens hospital as New York City endured the initial explosion of Covid, can be seen without commercial interruption through the ABC and National Geographic apps in the U.S., starting Thursday at 12:01 a.m. Est.
The free release marks the two-year anniversary of the first Covid-19 case in the United States to be confirmed by the CDC. With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. In Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, the concept of time — and feeling like you’re running out of it — is central to the narrative. Corey Hawkins and Moses Ingram play Lord and Lady Macduff, the fertile young couple who represent all that has eluded the Macbeths — a bushel of children to continue their lineage and potential for upward mobility in their political future. They’re time incarnate.
In the pantheon of film adaptations of William Shakespeare’s Scottish play, the Apple and A24 production stands out, not only for its modern black-and-white cinematography, but the inclusion of a wide array of Black actors is another notable triumph.
Hawkins, Ingram and Sean Patrick Thomas discussed the production’s prominent diversity with Variety at the film’s L.A. premiere at the DGA Theatre earlier this month.

CAA has signed documentary filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, directors of “Writing With Fire,” which won an audience award and special jury award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and was just nominated for best feature honors by the International Documentary Assn.
CAA will also represent Black Ticket Films, the social justice-focused production company Thomas and Ghosh founded in 2009.
“Writing With Fire,” Thomas and Ghosh’s feature debut, tells the story of Khabar Lahariya, a female-run newspaper in northern India whose journalists are all Dalit, the lowest group in the Hindu caste system. The film received critical acclaim, with Variety’s review noting that “[s]ome stories, like ‘Writing With Fire,’ are worth breaking the rules for, and worth doing what we can to protect,” and praising the filmmakers specifically, saying “Thomas and Ghosh have found their angle, and it’s a powerful one.”

This article contains spoilers for Saving Private Ryan.
Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998) is known for a number of things: the gut-wrenching, visceral terror of its battle scenes (especially the opening landing at Omaha Beach), the shocking way in which bodies are torn to pieces during the course of those battles, the attention to period detail, and a powerful performance by Tom Hanks that rates as one of his finest.
But one thing that the film may not be as widely recognized for is the lineup of young actors who played members of Capt. John Miller’s (Hanks) squad, or soldiers they met along the way as they searched throughout Normandy for the missing Pvt. James Francis Ryan. From Matt Damon to Vin Diesel, Spielberg recruited relatively new faces who were all, in one way or another, either launching their careers outright or just starting to make their mark on Hollywood.

It’s been said time and again that the Academy’s documentary branch is a consistently unpredictable bunch. But are they?
Given their Oscar nomination track record, it certainly doesn’t seem like it. The group has made their likes and dislikes perfectly clear in recent years. They enjoy recognizing international productions as well as newcomers. In the past two decades alone, 12 directors have taken home the Academy Award for their very first documentary theatrical feature. They include Bryan Fogel (“Icarus”), Ezra Edelman (“O.J.: Made in America”), Louie Psihoyos (“The Cove”) and Malik Bendjelloul (“Searching for Sugarman”). Big box office numbers also don’t impress this nonfiction crowd. Examples include snubbing “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” ($22.8 million) “Three Identical Strangers” ($13.4 million) and this year’s “Apollo 11” ($15.3 million). They also aren’t awed by archival footage. (Again: “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and “Apollo 11”.) And they especially...
