Developed in the early ‘70s by George Lucas, Star Wars, as a franchise, has grown to juggernaut heights both in net worth and creative output. Ever since the release of the first film, it has continued to capture the imaginations of countless people across the globe and become more or less synonymous with everyday pop culture. Regardless of its juggernaut impact, it too, has not managed to get away from flaws and misses and landed criticisms, especially for its prequel trilogy.

George Lucas’ original Star Wars films were a benchmark in the sci-fi genre introducing audiences to a fascinating new world full of exciting characters and world-building. The classic arc of good vs evil, with the former eventually triumphing over evil, worked big time with fans, making the original trilogy an iconic one.

This article contains full spoilers for Atlas.
After surviving an attack orchestrated by the rogue synthetic Harlan (Simu Liu), cyber analyst Atlas (Jennifer Lopez) lands in her mech-suit on a mysterious new planet. And it is there that she notices a strange flower, which the artificial intelligence Smith (voiced by Gregory James Cohan) informs her has never been seen before. When Smith asks what she wants to call the flower, Atlas responds with an uncreative name: “Planty.”
Although Atlas insists that she’s making a joke, Smith accepts the name, and Planty returns at the end of the film as a symbol of the bond formed between human and robot. At the same time, this dull bit of nomenclature illustrates the way AI destroys creativity. Which seems an apt metaphor for the movie it’s in. Revenge Of The Sith marks a pivotal moment in the Star Wars universe, particularly the Skywalker Saga as it cements Anakin Skywalker’s turn to the Dark Side. The film features several brutal moments, which slowly build up to Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader after he succumbs to the Dark Side.
Count Dooku’s death is one of the most brutal moments in Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith (Image Credit: Lucasfilm).
However, one brutal moment from the film, namely the death of Count Dooku at the hands of Anakin wasn’t exactly scripted as it appears in the final film. Instead, the scene was changed during the conceptualization of the duel’s stunt choreography and added Count Dooku’s brutal fate. Given the complex emotions the scene was trying to convey, actor Christopher Lee brilliantly portrayed Count Dooku’s death despite the scene being changed on the fly.

George Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy has often faced criticism for various elements, from the cast’s performances to the complex political narrative. After The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones did not fare well among the audience, fans had already lost hope for Episode III.

The tagline for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival should probably be “Back to the Future.” Indeed, four Hollywood legends who first established themselves in the 1970s as part of the “New Hollywood,” and haven’t been back to festival in decades, are front and center on the Croisette this year.

Hayden Christensen is a widespread name in pop culture for his role as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. He featured in the second and the third installments of the Prequel Trilogy Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith before returning to his role in the Disney+ Star Wars shows Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka.
The Prequel Trilogy focused on Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker’s slow descent into the dark side until he ultimately becomes Darth Vader. Although the actor did a lot to make his performance as iconic as possible, Christensen’s work always resulted in a mixed reception among critics and fans.

George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise has its own intricate power system that relies on the otherworldly source of power known as the Force. Over the years, several Force powers have been used by different characters. However, the appearance of deceased members of the Jedi order showing up as Force Ghosts remains extremely popular.

The Star Wars saga is pretty perfect just the way it is, and perhaps no die-hard fan would argue otherwise. But what if things didn’t end the way they did? What if some characters faced wildly different ends than what was originally penned down for them, like Anakin Skywalker, for instance? Well, one game on the lore seems to set that perfect alternate ending for Darth Vader.

This game is none other than the Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith video game, which quite literally has an alternate point of view to Anakin’s fate at the end of this story. As opposed to the one seen in the movies, this one sees Vader go full-blown evil and kill Obi-Wan Kenobi instead of letting him leave him on the lava shore, and fans just seem to love it.

The upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte promises plenty of martial-arts-inspired action and a climactic lightsaber battle. The makers of the show recently mentioned that the team aimed to compete with Darth Maul’s legendary battle with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and called it the best lightsaber battle in Star Wars history.
But is it? The franchise has seen numerous lightsaber battles across media, with fan getting their first taste of the trope in Star Wars: A New Hope. While the original trilogy is still considered to be the best of the films released to date, the lightsaber battles seem to have improved since then. The prequel trilogy’s climactic showdown between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker definitely has a higher ground in the category.

With an Academy Award and Japan Academy Film Prize under its belt, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is getting more showings in Japan with a huge expansion set later this week that includes screenings of the English dub of the film across Japan. Before then though, that didn’t stop people from rushing out and seeing the latest from Studio Ghibli over the last week, giving the film two new milestones on its bird belt. As of March 17, The Boy and the Heron has made 9.08 billion yen (US$63.55 million) at the Japanese box office with 6.12 million tickets sold. Since the film’s last major placing in the charts in September 2023, this newest update–which has the film passing 9 billion yen!–has brought the Miyazaki feature up 15 places on the all-time charts, putting it at 64th place and less than 100 million yen behind Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith...

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is a film full of epic moments. One of the best scenes is the opening battle scene where Chancellor Palpatine manipulates Anakin Skywalker into killing Count Dooku during the Battle of Coruscant.

In the scene where Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) instructs Anakin (Hayden Christensen) to cut off Count Dooku’s (Christopher Lee) head, he delivers some famous lines in a dramatic manner. Ewan McGregor returned as the Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi, in his titular series, almost 17 years after his last appearance in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The series did a decent job of entertaining the Star Wars fandom, despite the criticisms for its shoddy writing at places. However, Disney has quietly confirmed that McGregor’s show is not getting another season.
Ewan McGregor reprised his role from the Star Wars prequel trilogy in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi took place ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and the titular character is in hiding on the planet Tatooine, looking after Luke. He is tasked with the mission of rescuing Princess Leia from the Galactic Empire, which leads to a confrontation with his former apprentice.

It’s unfortunate, but most streaming shows (and movies for that matter) never get a physical release, but thankfully, Disney has been releasing some of their most popular Marvel and Star Wars shows on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. Following in the footsteps of Loki season 1, WandaVision, and the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, Disney announced today that they will be releasing collector’s editions of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. George Lucas' "Star Wars" Prequel Trilogy is bursting with provocative ideas. It is, in theory, a startlingly downbeat depiction of a slow-rolling fascist government takeover in which the protagonist shuts out his better angels and turns into a vindictive, genocidal monster. He accidentally kills the mother of his children, and nearly melts in volcanic lava after failing to murder his principled mentor. This is, mind you, a kids film.
That this outcome was a foregone conclusion needn't have diminished the awful power of Anakin Skywalker's horrible choice. And this being "Star Wars," no one was expecting nuance. But were we really expecting "Star Wars" to go there – and by "there," I mean dramatize the savage lengths to which a Sith-indoctrinated Anakin would have to go to completely wipe out the Jedi? Because unless all those cute little padawans went lockstep Hitler Youth, they almost certainly met with an ugly fate.

Hayden Christensen may have started acting way before, but it was truly his iconic character of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars universe that quite brilliantly boosted his fame in Hollywood and made him a household name. In fact, the now-42-year-old actor fit so absolutely perfectly in the role that fans now can’t imagine anyone else as Darth Vader beside him.

Yet, for one who brought balance to the Star Wars saga and perfectly explained the events that happened before the first Star Wars film from 1977, Christensen never wanted this role, but a different one because this role felt “too big” to him. But thanks to a fortunate turn of events, Hayden Christensen got cast in the very role that transformed him into a renowned Hollywood star overnight!

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

Hayden Christensen made his acting debut at the age of 12 in 1993 when he played a supporting role in the German Canadian TV series Macht Der Leidenschaft/Family Passions. The very next year, he had a minor role in John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness. You don’t have to go too far into the biographies of bad boy New Hollywood directors to find examples of impropriety. William Friedkin tossing around poor Linda Blair for The Exorcist. Gareth Edwards' 2016 flick "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" told the story of how the Rebel Alliance in "Star Wars" came into possession of the Death Star blueprints the Rebels used as their central guide for its destruction. Audiences were told that "Many Bothans died to bring us this information," although none of those Bothans appeared in "Rogue One". Instead, Edwards' film focused on a loose-knit group of rebels who defied the plans of the Rebellion -- they went rogue -- in order to obtain the blueprints. The group was led by a young woman named Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), the daughter of one of the Death Star's architects.
The characters weren't terribly interesting, the dialogue was clunky at best, and the bland story was a frustratingly foregone conclusion -- the end scenes of "Rogue One" link directly to the first scenes of "Star Wars" -- but Edwards' film accrued...

In J.J. Abrams' maligned 2019 sci-fi adventure "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," it was revealed that the young heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) was the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), the deceased villain from several previous "Star Wars" movies. At the end of 1983's "Return of the Jedi," Darth Vader (David Prowse) hurled the elderly Emperor from a tall tower, most definitely killing him. Somehow, however, Palpatine returned. Not only did he return, but he was revealed to be the secret mastermind behind all of the galaxy's recent malfeasance. He was kept alive by eerie, Gigerian machines on the distant planet Exegol, secretly growing clones and constructing a powerful fleet of ultra-destructive warships.

Say what you will about George Lucas' writing -- especially his dialogue -- but there's no denying the man had a vision, and that vision changed cinema forever. He helped bring about the digital revolution, created one of the biggest fictional universes out there, and can also be a pretty good filmmaker with the right material. That said, Lucas is not known for eloquent and specific instructions for his actors. Instead, he is famous for his "faster, more intense" stage direction during the making of the original "Star Wars" trilogy — a direction that was sorely needed in the recent "Ahsoka" series.

Before Samuel L. Jackson became synonymous with the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to his decades-long role as Nick Fury, it was “Star Wars” that was the first Hollywood mega-franchise to open its doors for the beloved actor. Jackson played Jedi master Mace Windu in George Lucas’ “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, and it’s a role he appears quite eager to play again despite Mace being killed off in 2015’s “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” after Anakin severs his hand with a lightsaber, and Emperor Palpatine electrocutes him and sends him flying out of a building window.
Not so fast. During an interview with Empire Magazine, Jackson had this to say about Mace’s fate: “He’S Not Dead!!!” When the subject of Mace being brought back for his own Disney+ series came up, Jackson was asked what he would want to see in such a project.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and Empire’s latest issue is an epic celebration of all three movies, including interviews with Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid.
Hayden Christensen reflected on his time in the Star Wars franchise. “It’s been a remarkable experience,” Christensen said. “And just a very heartwarming one. The journey that I’ve been on with Star Wars over the last 20 plus years… it’s been a wild ride, and where we’re at now is really meaningful to me.” Of course, the backlash against the prequels was rather intense at the time, with plenty aimed at Christensen’s portrayal of Anakin Skywalker. Those opinions have simmered over the years, with a new generation of fans holding the Star Wars prequel trilogy in high regard.

In director J.J. Abrams' 2019 film "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker," heroes Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) are searching for something called a Sith Wayfinder, a widget that would allow them to locate a hidden planet called Exogol: the place where the evil Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) is hiding out and building a fleet of warships. To find the Wayfinder, however, the heroes must first decipher some runes written in an ancient, forbidden Sith language etched onto the Blade of Ochi. Their translation droid C-3Po (Anthony Daniels) can translate the runes, but the information about the Sith language is embedded deep within his programming, and to extract it, a droid expert named Babu Frik has to wipe out C-3Po's memory entirely.
This was not the first time C-3Po's memory had been wiped. At the end of the 2005 film...

This article contains Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire spoilers.
They almost appear disappointed. The motley band of heroes whom Kora (Sofia Boutella) assembled to save her agricultural moon have come to fight, and probably die, against the might of the Imperium. But when the dastardly Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) revealed himself to be a toothless fighter, and was left to rot after being knocked into the sea by Kora, it seemed like everything worked out on its own. The death of an admiral, Kora informs us, means that his now leaderless dreadnaught must return to Motherworld rather than simply allow someone else to assume command. Convenient. And as a consequence, no baddies appear likely to return to this moon in nine weeks to claim a farming community’s crop before killing the villagers.
“This would have been a good place to die,” Djimon Hounsou’s rebellious General Titus laments.

The confused nature of the theatrical window for streamer-owned films reached a new level of absurdity with Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. Not only is this blockbuster behemoth merely the first installment of a two-part film—the second, subtitled The Scargiver, is set to be released in April—it’s a truncated version of its maker’s substantially longer preferred cut, which makes the film two-thirds of one-half of a story.
Rebel Moon began life as a Star Wars project before Snyder’s concept was turned down, and the resulting film often sounds as though the director and co-writers Kurt Johnsta and Shay Hatten did little more to their draft than perform a find-and-replace for any terms trademarked by Disney. The film even piggybacks off of George Lucas’s indebtedness to Kurosawa Akira: Its protagonist, Kora (Sofia Boutella), is a disillusioned veteran of the “Motherworld” autocracy who,...

The Prequel Trilogy remains a fascinating thing within the larger "Star Wars" canon. It's a mixed bag that angered many lovers of the series at the time of its release and yet, for a new generation, it's the "Star Wars" they group up with and wholly embrace, in no small part thanks to "The Clone Wars" TV series expanding that corner of the galaxy greatly. One thing that is widely agreed upon, however, is that 2005's "Revenge of the Sith," aka Episode III, is the best of the bunch. It's also maybe the biggest "What if?" moment in the history of the franchise, as the events could have unfolded any number of ways. The tie-in video game that was released along with the movie included an alternate ending that would have - not to be dramatic — changed the course of "Star Wars" history as we know it.
