Jeffrey Wright is one step closer to that Egot. In January, the D.C. born actor received his first career Oscar nomination for his leading role in the satirical comedy “American Fiction,” an industry recognition that was overdue after years of incredible Wright performances. Should he win come ceremony day, he’ll need a single Grammy to become one of the few elusive talents to complete showbiz’s preeminent grand slam.
Starting his career in theater, Wright earned both his Tony and Emmy awards with the same role: Belize, a nurse and former drag queen in Tony Kushner’s acclaimed two-part epic play “Angels in America.” Wright earned raves for his charisma onstage, and walked away with a Supporting Actor Tony at the 1994 ceremony when he was just 28. In 2003, Wright was the only actor from the play’s original Broadway cast to reprise his role in the HBO limited series adaptation.

Jeffrey Wright is generating Oscar buzz for his role in Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction,” which sees the actor playing a highly educated Black intellectual who finds mainstream success when he dumbs down his own writing to align it with white audiences’ vision of the Black experience. The film, which won the People’s Choice Award at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, has been praised by many as an evisceration of the boxes in which Black artists and writers are often placed.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote the film, Wright recalled an experience when his own ability to express himself was hindered in a similar way. After filming Ang Lee’s 1999 Western “Ride with the Devil,” in which he played a former slave who fights guerrilla warfare battles in the American Civil War alongside the man who bought his freedom, Wright was asked to overdub a...

Jeffrey Wright is recalling the time he did not censor himself for the film Ride with the Devil.
Studios release different versions of films depending on where they are being exhibited. During a roundtable with his American Fiction co-stars, Wright opened up about dubbing himself for the “airplane version” of the 1999 Ang Lee film.
In the Civil War set film, the actor portrays a former slave fighting on the side of the Confederacy.
“In this scene in which he has this, kind of the apex of his awakening and his need to emancipate himself, he says, ‘Being that man’s friend was no more than being his n*****. And I will never again be anyone’s n*****,'” Wright recalled during EW‘s roundtable. “And it’s such a self-empowering statement and understanding of the word.”

Jeffrey Wright’s latest stop on his “American Fiction” press tour was a cast interview with Entertainment Weekly in which he shocked his co-stars with a story about how he once refused a studio’s request to censor his dialogue. The Emmy winner starred in Ang Lee’s 1999 Civil War drama “Ride With the Devil” as a former slave fighting for his freedom.
“In this scene in which he has this kind of the apex of his awakening and his need to emancipate himself, he says, ‘Being that man’s friend was no more than being his n—–. Hope Runs High has acquired U.S. rights to Augusto Sandino’s sophomore feature “A Vanishing Fog,” which won the SXSW Zeiss cinematography prize. The film is slated for an early 2024 opening in U.S. theaters. It’s the first feature to be shot in Colombia’s Sumapaz Páramo, the largest ecosystem of its kind in the world.
“In the middle of the staggering and endangered Sumapaz Paramo ecosystem; F, a solitary explorer, strives to protect the mystical and fragile land he inhabits, while caring for his ailing father,” the synopsis reads.
“Augusto Sandino’s incredible blend of playful surrealism and the overwhelming individuality of the environment in which the film is set has stayed with me since my first viewing. I believe his ability to balance visual scale, cinematic playfulness, and true heart make him an artist we should be engaging with frequently,” said Hope Runs High curator Taylor Purdee.

Before "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," we thought we knew who Ang Lee was as a filmmaker. This was a man who made low-key dramas and comedies about repressed emotions, usually within the context of a family. Films like "Eat Drink Man Woman" and "The Ice Storm" were stories about people struggling to express their feelings and not being able to communicate with the people in their lives. He was making movies for grown-ups, and he spent his career firmly establishing himself as one of the finest filmmakers working within that space.

After teaming for Academy Award winner “Ex Machina” and the upcoming project “Men,” A24 has announced Alex Garland’s latest movie, “Civil War.”
Kirsten Dunst is set to star alongside Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Cailee Spaeny in the action film written and directed by Garland. Aside from the fact that the film is set in a near future America, plot details are being kept under wraps.
In 2016, Garland received an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay for “Ex Machina,” which also won an Oscar for achievement in visual effects. Garland followed the critically acclaimed movie with 2018’s “Annihilation” and the FX series “Devs.” His upcoming projects include “Men,” starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear, which A24 will release later this year.

Exclusive: Acclaimed author Daniel Woodrell’s The Bayou Trilogy crime novels is getting a TV series adaptation. Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman are developing and producing the project via their Timberman-Beverly Productions banner. It is one of the first high-profile shows under the overall deal the duo signed with Lionsgate Television last year.
The Bayou Trilogy: Under the Bright Lights, Muscle for the Wing, and The Ones You Do chronicles business-as-usual corruption in the fictitious Louisiana parish of St. Bruno. In the eye of the storm stands Detective Renee Shade, whose sense of duty collides with a violent underbelly of Dixie Mafia, ex-cons, dirty cops, and political grifters, along with pesky personal demons and a web of family entanglements.
“Daniel Woodrell is a brilliant storyteller, wordsmith and poet, and his books are a master class in character, crime fiction and the South,” said Beverly. “He plunges readers into the murky depths of his characters’ lives,...

“The Masked Singer” finale concluded on Wednesday night with Queen of Hearts being crowned the Season 6 champ and claiming the Golden Mask over Bull (Todrick Hall). Her showstopping performances of “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye and “Firework” by Katy Perry landed her in the winner’s circle where she pulled off her mask to reveal Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum superstar Jewel.
“It is just an honor,” Jewel confessed during her unmasked interview with host Nick Cannon. “It really is an honor to be in the hall of costumes and with the other amazing winners. Everybody was so talented on this show. It’s the privilege of a lifetime to get to be yourself. This show, oddly, really gets at your essence and I find that really special. An upbeat crowd of film-industry worthies got off their couches and traded their sweatpants for formal wear to fill the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Thursday evening to see Scarlett Johansson feted at the 35th Annual American Cinematheque Awards.
If the ongoing pandemic led to properly cautious protocols and the complications of slowly reopening cinemas went almost wholly unmentioned, the evening displayed a peaceful near-lassitude rather than the typical gala’s Hooray for Hollywood ethos. After all, it’s been just a few weeks since Johansson won a significant skirmish with Disney and Marvel to get her proper payday for the “Black Widow” vehicle doomed by lockdown to underpay her what should have been a bounteous backend share of the box office. (Johansson’s CAA agent Bryan Lourd — his former agency partner Rick Nicita chairs the Cinematheque Board — was in great spirits at the star’s table.)

A movie called “Civil War” could really be about so many things. I immediately assumed a film about January’s insurrection had been produced, edited and released in just nine months’ time. What an achievement! It’s a surprise then to discover that Civil War is about the actual civil war. The one about the North versus the South. The one about slavery (depending on who you ask). The one they made Gone With the Wind about. It’s almost quaint in that regard.
No matter what it is or it isn’t about— the contemporary political space may not be the film's focus but its heavily on its mind -- it’s a good movie. Civil War finds interesting crevices within which to explore education and class-driven divides and the way the war's lessons are taught and absorbed by the next generations. Spoiler alert: it’s not entirely comforting.

About two minutes long, the teaser picks up immediately after the bombshell press conference Kendall (Jeremy Strong) gives in the season two finale.

Greg (Nicholas Braun) and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) also feel the pressure as it appears the FBI raids the company for all information on the enormous crime coverups.

That's the American Civil War, not the McU's "Civil War," though anyone who flunked History could be forgiven for making that mistake since Hawke has now joined the MCU and is out there comparing its movies and TV shows to Westerns.

Finally, Scarlet Johansson's Black Widow gets her standalone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man started it, Captain America expanded it, the Hulk that isn't Bana or Norton had a "trilogy" that started in Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Loki (Lokii?) got their own show, and here, delayed, Natasha Romanoff.

To get the benefit of Black Widow you ought to have seen the Captain America films, and by extension Avengers: Age Of Ultron (as frequently recommended to Wandavision viewers). It will be helpful to have seen others, but after-credit sequences may generate conflicts if you've not updated as far as Endgame and may clash with The Falcon & The Winter Soldier.

It will be helpful to have seen others, but after-credit sequences may generate conflicts if you've not updated as far as Endgame and may clash with The Falcon & The Winter Soldier.

As far as blockbuster sequels go, Terminator 2: Judgment Day remains widely hailed as one of the best, having constructed a skillfully expanded spectacle without indulgently redefining the original premise. Yet, the film had to be sold to the public going into its July 3, 1991 wide release, which was nearly seven whole years after the first film cemented the superstardom of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fortunately, a partnership with rockers Guns N’ Roses yielded a theme song in “You Could Be Mine” that would effectively convey the film’s intensity and attitude. Thirty years later, the song remains an indelible part of the revered sequel.
While fan-magazine-read sci-fi cinephiles saw Terminator 2 coming from the time the film’s tightly-scheduled principal photography commenced in October of 1990, the sequel was a surprise to the general public when its first teaser trailers ambushed big screen audiences. After all, this was a time before the prevalence...

“Black Widow” takes a different approach to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular superheroes, going back to before Natasha Romanov’s sacrifice in “Avengers: Endgame” to show moments and important figures from her past. And while Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige doesn’t currently have another such prequel in the works, he revealed he’s not opposed to revisiting the format later down the road.
“Certainly this film and this story is a particular case for Natasha. But the notion of exploring the past, present and future of the MCU is certainly in the cards for all of our characters,” Feige said during a recent press junket for the latest Marvel film. “This particular story of this particular cast is very personal, very specific to Natasha.”
But don’t get your hopes up. If another prequel were to happen, it would be a while before we see it.

Death is rarely the end for any comic book character’s story. Such is the case with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, whose backstory will be fleshed out in Disney’s upcoming feature film following the character’s death in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
Marvel Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Feige discussed the Scarlett Johansson-led “Black Widow,” which will premiere in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9, and the possibility of other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters getting their own prequel films and spin-offs during a recent press conference.

Marvel’s move into streaming with this year’s “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” conclusively demonstrated two things: that they didn’t skimp on the music budgets, and that theme songs could generate as much buzz as the unfolding mysteries surrounding the characters.
Both series turned to Marvel vets for their lavish scores: Christophe Beck (the “Ant-Man” movies) for “WandaVision” and Henry Jackman (two “Captain America” films) for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” And both demanded music with wide stylistic ranges, from lighthearted sitcom tropes to darker orchestral colors for terrorists and assorted bad guys.
Yet it was the songs for “WandaVision” that attracted the most attention. All six, by Oscar-winning “Frozen” songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, lampooned different eras of TV themes: “A Newlywed Couple” (a la “Dick Van Dyke Show”), “WandaVision!” (“Bewitched”), “We Got Something Cooking” (“The Partridge Family”), “Making It Up as...

Elizabeth Olsen has been playing Wanda/Scarlet Witch for over half a decade dating back to 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” but it’s only after “WandaVision” that she’s feeling empowered to exert more ownership over her character. During an oral history of the MCU series for Rolling Stone, Olsen revealed “WandaVision” made her “feel more confident” playing Scarlet Witch going into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Olsen is reprising the character opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Sam Raimi’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
“Working on ‘Dr. Strange’ immediately after, I just feel like my instincts are right,” Olsen said about coming off “WandaVision.” “It feels the way you want to feel all the time, which is kind of hard when you have such little screen time and everything that’s happening not on the page is in your head and not in the writer’s head.

As we wait an announcement pertaining to the existence of NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice 3, we at least know that Warner Bros. is set to adapt the games into a DC animated movie.
Ever since its release in 2013, the Injustice franchise has not only become a staple of NetherRealm’s roster, but the comic spinoffs have made it a beloved part of the DC multiverse. The plot revolves around a reality where the Joker was able to mess with Superman so badly that the Man of Steel gradually became a mass-murdering dictator, with the support of several members of the Justice League. Left without any other option, Batman brought in counterparts of the Justice League from the “mainstream” universe to help him fight a civil war against his former friend. It was a story that merged the Justice Lords two-parter from the Justice League cartoon with Marvel’s original Squadron Supreme comic series.

If you have Netflix and like superhero stuff, I highly recommend you watch one of its newest shows, Jupiter’s Legacy. This show is based off a comic series written by the very brilliant Mark Millar, who has written some of the greatest Marvel stories. You want some examples? Perhaps little stories like Civil War and Old Man Logan will ring some bells? It’s just my personal opinion, but those are among the best Marvel stories, and Mark Millar has written some great non-Marvel stories as well. These stories include Nemesis, American Jesus, and probably his most popular one, Kick-Ass. He

Marvel fans (and Bucky Barnes himself) got a surprise in the most recent episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” when it was revealed that Bucky’s (Sebastian Stan) new vibranium arm has a built-in failsafe that he had no idea about. But based on the reaction to it, we think some people probably need to rewatch previous episodes of this series, if not also at least 4 MCU movies.
So Episode 4, “The Whole World Is Watching,” begins with a flashback to sometime between “Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” during the period when Bucky was hiding out in Wakanda. Bucky has recently been cured (presumably by Shuri) of his Hydra programming, but that cure has to be tested, a potentially dangerous job that fell to Dora Milaje officer Ayo (Florence Kasumba). Of course, we know the cure worked. But in addition to giving Sebastian Stan the chance for an extremely moving performance,...

(This article contains spoilers for the episode 3 of the Marvel Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”)
It was interesting to realize that at the end of the third episode “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” it’s still extremely unclear what the overall plot is. That’s not a bad thing — Sam and Bucky have a mystery they’re trying to solve. And that mystery has expanded greatly with the introduction of a new player: The Power Broker.
The gist of the main story thread thus far on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is that there’s an anarchist-style group called the Flag Smashers who are up to no good — they want to return the world to the way it was after Thanos snapped half the universe out of existence. How they mean to accomplish that is unknown, but it will presumably involve mass murder.

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” brought back two characters last seen in “Captain America: Civil War,” and none of them were so radically different from their previous appearances than Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter.

The breakout star of the latest Loki trailer is not the mustachioed Owen Wilson as Mr. Mobius, nor Tom Hiddleston as Loki himself. Nay, the biggest star is, as it always should be, a cat.
The little guy appears around the 35-second mark and he immediately joins the canon of Marvel’s greatest characters. Does he have a name? Not yet. Does he have a purpose? Unclear. Is he a cutie? You better believe it, bud.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always operated under the mantra of giving people what they want. For the first decade of its existence that meant introducing dozens of iconic Marvel comic characters and having them crossover in one another’s movies, creating an exciting and comprehensive cinematic universe.
Of late, however, Marvel appears to have realized that an action-packed canon isn’t the only thing film-goers and TV-watchers desire. They also want some nice animals.

It's now set to open in July and will be available on Disney+ in addition to theaters at the same time. This is the fourth trailer for the movie after three others last year before the shutdowns. This new stand-alone solo movie is directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland and is set between the Civil War and Infinity War movies. Romanoff must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Scarlett Johansson stars as Natasha Romanoff, returning from the previous Marvel movies. The cast also includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, David Harbour as Red Guardian,...

Spoiler Alert: The following recap contains spoilers from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Episode 3, “The Power Broker.”
The halfway point of Disney+/Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Solider served up plenty of set-up, with a chock-a-block amount of details from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as returning characters and cameos galore.
The biggest surprise, as is typical for any of these new Marvel/Disney+ episodes, came with its cliffhanger: The arrival of Florence Kasumba’s Black Panther warrior Ayo, who Bucky encounters on the streets in Latvia. “I’m here for Zemo,” she declares in Wakandan. Zemo assassinated King T’Chaka in Captain America: Civil War, and Ayo has come for his head. Who knows how this plot string will get tied up, but as Deadline first told you there is a Wakanda series in the works for Disney+. This looks like the launchpad.

Spoiler Warning: Do not read if you have not seen Season 1, Episode 3 of Disney Plus’ “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”
The topsy-turvy world created by the Blip gets even more complicated in “Power Broker,” an episode that introduces a brand new location and several new rogues to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bucky (Sebastian Stan) helps Zemo (Daniel Brühl) break out of prison. John Walker (Wyatt Russell) continues to demonstrate how ill-suited he is to the title of Captain America, while Sam (Anthony Mackie) becomes so disillusioned with the whole idea of a super soldier that he wishes he’d destroyed Cap’s shield outright.
Most importantly, we are re-introduced to Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), and learn that getting forced to go off the grid because she helped Steve Rogers in “Captain America: Civil War” has dulled the clarity of Sharon’s moral compass.

A review of this week’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, “Power Broker,” coming up just as soon as I try to run in these heels…
There’s a moment late in “Power Broker” where Sam and Bucky are once again bickering, this time about which direction Bucky was supposed to go in the middle of a gunfight. Sam feels his instructions were very clear, and gripes, “It’s in every action movie!” It’s supposed to be another joke about how these two just plain don’t like each other,...
