James Cameron has seldom been more vocal about his appreciation for an artist than when he was completely bowled over by Bernard Hill’s role in Titanic. For a director as esteemed as Cameron, there must be very few things that can still hold that effect on him, however, Titanic still manages to churn out such rare and treasured moments at a steady pace.

Despite playing only a minor role in the film, the subtlety of Bernard Hill’s powerhouse performance in the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio film held the capacity to move the director of the $2.26 billion romantic tragedy. As such, it was only right that Cameron expressed his gratitude and privilege after witnessing the understated actor’s process at work.

Once upon a time, Netflix was in the business of auteur-driven animation, allowing filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro work on his dream project "Pinocchio," giving Henry Selick his first movie in 13 years after Disney killed his previous project, letting Charlie Kaufman deliver an existential kids' animated movie in "Orion and the Dark," and rescuing "Nimona" after Disney pulled the plug. The streamer has partnered with the likes of Glen Keane, Sergio Pablos, Richard Linklater, Chris Williams, Craig McCracken, and Jorge R. Gutiérrez, but a name that won't join this list anytime soon is legendary filmmaker David Lynch.
Speaking with Deadline, Lynch offered an update on his long-gestating animated movie "Snootworld," which he's been teasing since at least 2009. Lynch co-wrote the script for his animated feature debut with Caroline Thompson ("The Nightmare Before Christmas"), with Lynch penning the second of the film's three acts.

I can almost imagine Out of Darkness’ director Andrew Cumming pitching the film to potential backers as Quest for Fire meets Predator. And one that makes it sound a lot less cerebral and more commercial than it might otherwise appear.

Meg Ryan is not standing by silently and letting people label her actor son Jack Quaid a nepo baby, a term used for kids of famous parents. Quaid is the son of Ryan and actor Dennis Quaid.
In a new interview, Ryan defends her son of the label, calling it “dismissive.”

Netflix has reignited the world of The Sandman, announcing the continuation of Season 2’s production in London. This development comes as a celebratory mark of the comic series’ 35th anniversary. Fans of Neil Gaiman’s imaginative universe have much to look forward to as the show picks up from its unexpected pause due to the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.
Season 1, which premiered in August 2022, delved into the first two volumes of Gaiman’s comics, ‘Preludes & Nocturnes’ and ‘The Doll’s House.’ An extra episode also featured the stories “Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Calliope.” The excitement doesn’t end there, as Netflix teased a behind-the-scenes photo from the set, showcasing Tom Sturridge as Dream and Mason Alexander Park as Desire, heightening anticipation for what’s to come.
Gaiman, in his letter, reflects on the journey of The Sandman, emphasizing the show’s distinctive approach in a landscape filled with superhero narratives.

Emerald Fennell's sophomore feature, "Saltburn," plays like a gothic romance. There's sex, there's intrigue, and eventually things turn to murder. As our own Jacob Hall said in his review, "it's one of the bleakest films of 2023, and a real bad time at the movies."
This is a film full of twists and turns, one that plays with the particulars of British class, and a film where Barry Keoghan essentially plays a hornier and queerer Tom Ripley.
Much like "Promising Young Woman," Fennell's "Saltburn" ends very much open to interpretation, with a finale that offers as many answers as it does questions. This is a psychosexual thriller that is often disturbing, quite horny, and features one of the best villains of the year.
Whether you are confused about the ending or you simply want to check out another read on Oliver's master plan, here's what happens at the end...

A Haunting in Venice is a mystery movie directed by Kenneth Branagh, based on the novel by Agatha Christie.
As you may know, Kenneth Branagh, an excellent actor and film and theater director, has taken it upon himself to revive Agatha Christie and portray her iconic detective, Hercule Poirot. He skillfully blends classic novel elements with a distinct, visually striking cinematic style.
In our opinion, this is the most accomplished adaptation on a cinematographic level. The atmosphere and story lend themselves to elaborate compositions and chiaroscuro effects.
Branagh’s adaptations of Agatha Christie’s works are, without a doubt, the finest ones to date. Whether you enjoy this kind of mystery and intrigue or not is a different matter.

The central villain of George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars" is a stern, steel-eyed military general named Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing). He is in command of a moon-sized structure called the Death Star which can destroy entire planets with a single, powerful laser blast. Like all the employees who work for the evil Empire, Tarkin is miserably unhappy. One might note that no Empire employees in any of the "Star Wars" films smile, laugh, or appear to enjoy their jobs. Joy is not in Tarkin's vocabulary.
Tarkin is a fine character and Cushing is an excellent actor, but, as a character, he was massively upstaged by his mysterious lieutenant, an evil mask-wearing, semi-robotic warlock named Darth Vader. The character, of course, warrants no description as you can buy toasters with his face on them to this very day. Because Darth Vader left such an impact on audiences, the many...

Irish heartthrob and "Normal People" star Paul Mescal has been one to watch in recent years. Heralded as an up-and-coming talent with a breakthrough Hulu series under his belt, he was always going places. The fall festivals have seen a number of actors make strong cases for their presence in this year’s awards race, from Emma Stone for “Poor Things” to Jeffrey Wright for “American Fiction.” But few have been as authoritative as Colman Domingo in “Rustin,” which could help Domingo’s other movie, “Sing Sing,” get some attention as well with its premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.
Written and directed by Greg Kwedar (“Jockey”), the indie drama is a curious concoction that finds veteran actor Domingo playing a would-be playwright in a theater program at Sing Sing Correctional Facility; his fellow actors, with the notable exception of “Sound of Metal” Oscar nominee Paul Raci, are, for the most part, former prisoners who took place in that actual program and are billed in the credits as playing themselves.

Film and sound editor Garth Craven, who edited films including “Legally Blonde” and got his start in film editing with Sam Peckinpah’s “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid,” died May 20 in Barcelona. He was 84.
His death was only recently announced by his daughter Willow.
Craven not only worked in the cutting room but also in sound departments and served as second unit director on several films. At the beginning of his career, Craven worked on Federico Fellini’s fantasy drama “Satyricon” (1969) in the sound editing department, which served as his introduction to filmmaking.
Back in England, he continued working on films in London. Resuming his work in the sound department, Craven received a BAFTA for the critically acclaimed romantic drama “The Go-Between” (1971) directed by Joseph Losey.
He eventually became a frequent collaborator and friend of Peckinpah. Craven worked as a sound consultant on “The Getaway,” a sound editor on “Straw Dogs,...

Few directors boast the consistent excellence of German auteur Christian Petzold. The puckish filmmaker got on Zoom from New York to unwind some of the surprises in Berlin’s Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize winner “Afire,” his tenth feature and third to star Paula Beer.
It started out being called “The Lucky Ones.” “I love this title,” he told IndieWire during a recent interview. “But it was forbidden, because there was a wave of copyright problems.” When he came up with “The Red Sky,” referring to the film’s wildfire encroaching on his trio of Baltic Sea vacationers, “This was also forbidden for use. They said the word ‘afire’ and I said, ‘it sounds good.'”

“Time is all we have and every second that ticks away is one less second we’re alive,” Kenneth Anger told an interviewer from The Guardian 16 and a half years before his death this May at the age of 96. “The sands of time are going through the hourglass but it doesn’t frighten me.”

This post contains spoilers for the series finale of "Star Trek: Picard."
Throughout the final season of "Star Trek: Picard," Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is a man of surprisingly few words. Sure, the beloved retired captain chimes in with theories during the show's many exposition-heavy scenes, and has a few heart-to-hearts with his son Jack (Ed Speleers) and old pal Riker (Jonathan Frakes), but he's decidedly light on leaderly monologues. Picard is even fairly reticent when he's saying what may be one final goodbye to his crewmates, simply saying, "It means so much to me --" to Riker before parting ways.
I'll admit that moment in the finale had me yelling at the screen, hoping Picard would get the chance to say something, anything, that felt like a signature "Star Trek" sign-off before bowing out. I should've known the show was saving the best for last, and by best, I...

Season 1 of Netflix's "The Sandman" wasn't quite the great Neil Gaiman adaptation some of the storyteller's fans have been waiting for. It nevertheless set the series (which is far from strictly a fantasy drama) on the path to becoming the next best thing to reading Gaiman's original comics. That it was able to stay faithful to the spirit of its source material while including some welcome modifications -- some of which, admittedly, were more superficial than others in the way they modernize the "Sandman" universe -- is all the more reason to remain hopeful about the show's future.
Of course, it also helps that Gaiman's earlier "Sandman" comic books (which formed the basis of season 1) are generally agreed to be the weakest of the lot, compared to what comes after. With the best of the saga of Morpheus still on the horizon, fans have been...

The first half of the 20th century is often referred to as the Golden Age of Hollywood. But this distinction overlooks the abusive conditions forced upon actors of all ages. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were given large amounts of drugs to keep up with their intense shooting schedule when they were still children. Both actors had historic careers in the industry, but they were also damaged by these experiences in heartbreaking ways.

Gwen Davenport created the character for her 1947 novel Belvedere. It was later adapted into the 1948 film Sitting Pretty and its two sequels, Mr. Belvedere Goes to College (1949) and Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell (1951).

Six years after directing his last feature, Dustin Guy Defa returns with The Adults, a film of complicated shared histories and gradually revealing inner lives. With his relatively sprawling Person to Person, Defa followed a wide array of characters over five interweaving storylines. This time he focuses on one family and, closer still, on an unmistakable feeling: that of moving out and growing up, only to return home and realize all that delicately assembled adulthood was merely a façade. Playing out across a leafy town in upstate New York, The Adults follows a trio of siblings as they reunite: the brother who went away and the sisters who did not.
This is new territory for Defa. Warmth was in short supply in his debut, Bad Fever. It was absent altogether in his script for The Mountain. Shot on fuzzy 16mm, Person to Person allowed him to show a more benevolent side to his cinema.

Christopher Nolan's 2014 science fiction film "Interstellar" is something of a mixed bag. Set in the near future, when the planet Earth is on the brink of extinction, a group of astronauts pilot a shuttle through a wormhole seeking a viable planet on which to perpetuate the human species. Nolan's vision of the cosmos was striking enough to influence many spacebound dramas thereafter, and black holes have looked different in movies ever since the film's release. Additionally, the technology, the spacesuits, and the spacecraft all look appropriately utilitarian. The tech looks appropriately useable in "Interstellar."
There is, however, a lot of highfalutin talk about the human need to remain connected to a larger, cosmic force, with one astronaut positing that love itself may be the God-like energy that scientifically binds everything together. Nolan -- more often concerned with elaborate sci-fi screenwriting architecture than humanity -- is the wrong kind...

When it was first revealed that 2015's long-awaited "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" would center on a "not the Galactic Empire" in the form of the First Order, it was hard not to roll one's eyes at the idea. That feeling only intensified when it came to light that the First Order would have its own Death Star-style superweapon in the form of Starkiller Base. Was this really the best premise the movie's creatives could come up with? The Empire all over again, only bigger and more extreme? As though the generation of civilians who grew up hearing stories about Emperor Palpatine's terrible regime would somehow get it in their heads that the real problem with the Empire was that it didn't go far enough. Talk about hack writing, eh?

"Dead Poets Society" is one of a choice number of films that's defined almost entirely by its ending. That iconic final scene isn't easy to forget, even for those who watched the film for the first time in 10th grade English class or some such equivalent. The image of once-timid prep school boys standing atop their desks to pay tribute to their recently-fired English teacher, Mr. Keating (Robin Williams), is meant to invoke a sense of purpose. It's meant to stir up your emotions and stay with you for the rest of your life, even as the broad strokes of the film eventually fade into hazy memory. Without that "O, Captain, my Captain" moment, "Dead Poets Society" might have been a very different film. But it's not the only one that shaped the film into the classic it became.
Like with all good stories, the ending is merely a culmination of moments.

When Aesop Aquarian returned from acting class to discover an acquaintance dead of a gunshot wound in his spare room, he let it go.
Perhaps it had been a game of Russian roulette, or a suicide. At least these were the theories offered to him by his new Venice Beach housemates, members of what the public would in time call the Manson Family.
Later, when Aesop’s beloved custom Volkswagen camper van was mysteriously torched after he resettled with the group on their compound 30 miles north at the Spahn Movie Ranch, he accepted it. Maybe it was just an accident. Mercury could well have been in retrograde.

Liev Schreiber wouldn’t be opposed to revisiting “Ray Donovan,” he told the audience at Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival on Sunday. The beloved Showtime series, created by Ann Biderman, was canceled in 2020 after seven seasons. Following the fans’ outcry, “Ray Donovan: The Movie” premiered in 2022.
“I would consider it,” he said during a masterclass.
“It was always [longtime Showtime chief] David Nevins’ baby. I know he loves this character and this story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more from David.”
Schreiber admitted he was both “disappointed and relieved” by the show’s cancellation, but the outpouring of love and support touched him deeply.
“Naomi [Watts, his ex-partner] was a bigger star than me and we were flying all over the world with our children. But they were getting bigger and they needed to go to school and live in one place. She wanted to live in L.A.
