“The Love Boat” soon will be making another run, promising something for everyone — but this time as a reality dating series.
CBS and its sister Australian broadcaster Network 10 have both ordered local versions of “The Real Love Boat,” set to air in the U.S. and Australia later this year. The show is exactly what it sounds like: A reality dating competition show, but patterned after the hit 1970s hour-long comedy “The Love Boat.”
And just as Princess Cruises served as the backdrop to the scripted series, the cruise line’s ships will also serve as a setting for the new unscripted shows.
“The Love Boat” was produced by Aaron Spelling, whose company was later purchased by Viacom — eventually leading to the “Love Boat” IP being owned by CBS Studios. CBS and Network 10 are now Paramount Global brands.

The Love Boat is about to leave the dock once again — but with a different look this time.
CBS has handed a series order to The Real Love Boat, a new dating competition based on the ’70s hit series, TVLine has learned. The reality series will welcome a group of sexy singles aboard a cruise liner in the Mediterranean, with dates and challenges testing their compatibility. In a nod to the original show, the boat’s crew — including the “captain” and the “cruise director” — will guide the singles along the way and even help play matchmaker.

Gavin MacLeod, who was the Love Boat captain and played Murray on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, two of the top television shows of the 1970s and 1980s, died today at his home in Palm Desert, Calif. MacLeod was 90 and his death was confirmed by his nephew, Mark See.
No cause of death was revealed, but MacLeod had been in ill health over the last few months.
The affable actor played head writer Murray Slaughter on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and appeared in all 168 episodes over seven years, ending in 1977. He then pulled off a rarity, moving from one long-running hit show to another.
As Captain Stubing on The Love Boat, he appeared in 249 episodes, and later returned in the role for the TV movie The Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage in 1990 and for the “Reunion” episode of the rebooted series Love Boat: The Next Wave in 1998.

Gavin MacLeod, a sitcom veteran who played seaman “Happy” Haines on “McHale’s Navy,” Murray on “Mary Tyler Moore” and the very different, vaguely patrician Captain Stubing on “The Love Boat,” has died. He was 90.
MacLeod’s nephew, Mark See, confirmed his death to Variety. MacLeod died in the early morning on May 29. No cause of death was given, but MacLeod’s health had declined in recent months.
MacLeod played a relatively minor character on ABC hit “McHale’s Navy,” starring Ernest Borgnine, but as newswriter Murray Slaughter, he was certainly one of the stars of “Mary Tyler Moore,” appearing in every one of the classic comedy’s 168 episodes during its 1970-77 run on CBS. Murray was married to Marie (Joyce Bulifant) but was in love with Moore’s Mary Richards. His desk was right next to Mary’s in the Wjm newsroom, so MacLeod was frequently in the shot during the sitcom,...

A "Love Boat" reunion is only days away. CBS announced that its morning show "The Talk" will feature the cast coming back together on Nov. 5.

TV season is upon us yet again, which means that it’s time for some exciting new programs…and some rehashes of old favorites. Yes, reboots and remakes are about as familiar as commercials on television these days. Some like 90210, Hawaii Five-o, and Dallas have met with fairly hefty success, whereas others were gone in about as long as it takes to change the channel! This year we’re welcoming a revamped version of the long running ’60s detective drama Ironside to the small screen. We have high hopes for the program, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it doesn’t go the way of these 10 failed remakes. Read on to see how these short-lived shows rank by number of episodes that actually made it to air!

Last month, as the fate of ABC's Gcb hung in the balance, we were worried it would become a member of the "Gone Too Soon" club, TV shows that were snuffed out before they had a chance to flourish, or at least before we had a chance to grow tired of them.
Sadly, Gcb has gone to that big Upn in the sky, where it can run happily in the meadow with the likes of Firefly, Pushing Daisies, and Manimal.
While we mourn Gcb's loss, let's take a look at more shows that were ended too quickly. They were unappreciated at the the time, but they were either too good or too ... interesting ... not to have been offered the opportunity to flourish. Or flame out. Which is just as good.

Lisa Kudrow could have played it safe with her follow-up series to Friends, but instead...

When writer-producer David Landsberg invited friends to join distributors, sales agents and exhibitors for Thursday's screening of the low-budget, high-concept comedy "Sex Tax," his pitch wasn't just come to see the film but also to celebrate his life and the launch of his indie production company.
"What I told everybody is, 'Don't come to my funeral. Don't come see me when I'm dead,' " Landsberg said. " 'Come when I'm alive, when I'm doing something, not when I'm a little box of ashes.' "
It was pure Landsberg. After 35 years in Hollywood as a commercials and TV actor before moving behind the camera as producer and writer on "Herman's Head," "The Cosby Show," "Love Boat" and other series, Landsberg had suffered through several heart attacks -- an experience that changed his views about himself and the world.
