“Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo traveled to Las Vegas for CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.
Dressed in their character’s signature pink and green aesthetic, the Grammy-nominated artists graced the stage at Caesars Palace to hype up “Wicked,” the big-budget movie musical that’s due in theaters around Thanksgiving.
“We both felt such a tremendous responsibility to honor these women and to pour our hearts, our souls, our tears — so many different pairs of lashes,” said Grande, who requested to hold hands with her co-star on stage. Erivo added, “I’m really grateful for this journey that we’ve taken together.”
Though they didn’t sing (to the disappointment of many in the room), they introduced an extended featurette. Scored to “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” the dazzling footage showcased the sweeping, brightly lit world and includes scenes of Elphaba roaming the halls of Shiz University...

Broadway in Hollywood said today that the Tony-winning smash Broadway musical will return to the Pantages Theatre next year, with its limited engagement starting in December 2024. The organization usually reveals the Hollywood Boulevard venue’s entire season every February, but it got a broom-flying start on 2024-25.
The show is based on Gregory Maguire 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which followed up L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its classic 1939 MGM film. Featuring songs including “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” it looks at what happened in the Land of Oz from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin who is smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. Madonna has now had songs debut in the Billboard Top 100 in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and the 2020s.
Cher is the only other artist to achieve this feat. Her songs debuted from the 1960s to the 2000s.
“Popular,” written by the Weeknd, was released on June 2 and is the second single released to accompany the singer’s new HBO drama, The Idol.

Abel Tesfaye, the artist soon-to-be-formerly known as The Weeknd, has dropped his new single “Popular,” from the soundtrack to HBO’s The Idol, in which he stars and serves as co-creator alongside Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson. The track, which features Playboi Carti and Madonna, was first previewed on the red carpet at The Idol’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last week.
Produced by the Weeknd, Mike Dean, and Metro Boomin, “Popular” finds Tesfaye ruminating on the allure and pitfalls of fame and fortune. “Kill anyone to be popular, sell her soul to be popular,” he sings on the chorus, while Carti boasts, “Shawty fuck with me ‘cause she know I’m popular,” throughout.
Though it may have made more sense for Madonna to jump on one of the Weeknd’s sleek, ’80s-inspired synth-pop songs, the singer slips comfortably into the track’s midtempo R&b milieu. And who...

Disney’s former head of communications Zenia Mucha is advising TikTok as the beleagued company fights calls to shut it down in the U.S. on security concerns, Deadline has confirmed. It’s already banned across the Federal government with President Biden recently ramping up demands that the global app’s Chinese parent sell the U.S. business to a company Stateside, or see it vanish.
Mucha’s advisory role to the besieged social media platform falls under her Zm Stategies banner. Having moved back East after officially leaving Disney in late 2021, the former righthand lady to past and present CEO Bob Iger formed the company in August last year.
No stranger to the sharp elbows of the political world, Mucha was a hardball advocate for GOP New York Senator Alfonse D’Amato and later Governor George Pataki before joining Iger and the House of Mouse in 2001. Whether those partisan skills...

Prepare for an earlier return to Oz.
“Wicked,” Universal’s big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, is landing in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024 — a month ahead of schedule. The movie was initially scheduled to open on Dec. 25, but the studio felt it would be better positioned around Thanksgiving compared to Christmas.
Though the release calendar will change over the next two years, there’s currently only a Disney Animation placeholder on the docket during Thanksgiving of 2024. By comparison, Christmastime is stacked with “Avatar 3” (a sequel to the third-highest grossing movie in history), as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
Jon M. Chu is directing “Wicked,” which has been split into two parts. For now, the second installment is set to release a year later on Dec. 25, 2025. (There aren’t any “Avatar” sequels planned for 2025… at the moment.)

When Mia Berrin was a teenager in Florida, Nada Surf’s “Popular” was one of her favorite music videos. The 1996 alt-rock hit’s sarcastic perspective spoke to her, as did its subtly subversive gender politics, and seeing it all played out was exciting.
“It was around the time I was starting to get fascinated with the cheerleader aesthetic and that character,” Berrin, 24, tells Rolling Stone. “Seeing that in this song, and this funny heteronormative high-school video, was inspiring.”

It took years of hustle and hard work in high heels before RuPaul hit it big in TV. But while he was on the road to becoming a household name and multiple Emmy winner, the host and executive producer of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” never doubted that he was destined for small-screen success.
“Everything I know I learned from television,” RuPaul says. “I grew up watching television. I was groomed for it before I ever stepped in front of a camera. The first time I did, I knew exactly what to do.”
RuPaul recalls being obsessed with TV as a kid growing up in San Diego and the Atlanta area, frequently watching “Perry Mason” and “Murder, She Wrote” with his mother. He never missed “The Carol Burnett Show” and variety series hosted by Sonny & Cher. “Good Times” and “Sanford & Son” were also favorites. He watches reruns of “Golden Girls” regularly to this day.

When “Pose” premiered on FX last June, much fanfare was made of the first show starring five transgender women of color, three as leads. Viewers who tuned in found a world as beautiful and moving as Christopher Street, the ballroom, and the runway. From the fiercely protective house mother Blanca (Mj Rodriguez), her spirited child Angel (Indya Moore), and her dripping-with-elegance rival Elektra (Dominique Jackson), the women at the center of “Pose” were able to live and breathe on their own terms, free from any preconceived notions or box-checking of what a trans-femme character should look like. Much of that had to do with the writers, directors, producers, and general talent assembled by “Pose” executive producer — and reigning king of queer Hollywood — Ryan Murphy.
“From the very first conversation I had with Ryan…the first difficult conversation we had was about — ‘Why you? Why are you choosing to do the show?...

After another mini-break, “Saturday Night Live” is back with a new episode and another first-time host: Sandra Oh. Unfortunately, there is no “Killing Eve” sketch — though BBC America takes care of that series promotion during one of the first commercial breaks — but there is some unexpected insanity that gets the season back on track, heading into the closing stretch.
Host: Sandra Oh
Oh, Sandra. Sandra Oh’s monologue gets this episode off to a pretty good start, as she lets the whole world know she’s Canadian, she’s Asian, and she’s now a United States citizen… but she also has absolutely no idea how to be assertive and braggadocious, as she’s Canadian, and she’s Asian. This isn’t a Leslie Jones-heavy episode — in fact, the entire joke of the later sketch she’s “supposed” to figure into involves her not actually getting to do anything...

Last year, Sam Rockwell delivered an emotional and moving speech while accepting his best supporting actor Golden Globe award for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - he's nominated this year again for best supporting actor for his role in Vice - but before he took the stage, he got a sweet smooch from his date and long-term girlfriend, Leslie Bibb, that left him covered in lipstick.
But exactly who is Leslie Bibb? She's an accomplished actor in her own right and has been performing for decades!
Born in Bismarck, Nd, and raised in Nelson County, Va, the 43-year-old model-turned-actress got her start in 1990 when, at just 16, she won a nationwide model search on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Uber-producer Ryan Murphy has made small screen stars out of A-listers and fresh faces alike.
Angela Bassett (pictured above)
Bassett starred in four seasons of “American Horror Story”, earning two Emmy nominations. She helmed two episodes as a director, the first during her final season as an actor, on “Roanoke,” before Murphy invited her back behind-the-scenes for a pivotal episode in the seventh season, “Cult.” She also signed on to star in and serve as executive producer on Murphy’s first-responder drama “9-1-1” for Fox, which is now in its second season.
Kathy Bates
Bates joined the Ryan Murphy family in 2013, with the third season of “American Horror Story,” subtitled “Coven,” and continued on through the sixth season, “Roanoke.” The Oscar winner scored three nominations and one win to date with her work on Murphy’s anthology before moving over to “Feud,” in which she played actress Joan Blondell.

The only thing surprising about Ryan Murphy getting a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame Dec. 4 is that he doesn’t already have one.
“It’s about time!” exclaims Sarah Paulson, a frequent Murphy collaborator who’s worked with him on multiple projects since 2004, including every incarnation of “American Horror Story.” “I’m surprised people haven’t been walking all over his star on Hollywood Boulevard for 10 years now.”
One of the most prolific producers working today, Murphy has made an indelible stamp on the industry, reinventing the television landscape with every series he’s created, from 1999’s “Popular” and 2003’s “Nip/Tuck” to 2009’s “Glee” and his latest effort, “Pose.” Those anthology series that now dominate the screen? His idea. The migration of movie stars to television? Murphy again.

Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis have more fantastical stories to tell, having signed on as the showrunners for Apple’s upcoming Amazing Stories.
Described as a “reimagining” of the mid-1980s anthology series from Steven Spielberg (who will serve as an executive producer alongside Horowitz and Kitsis), the new Amazing Stories promises to “transport the audience to worlds of wonder through the lens of today’s most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers.”

Now that “Once Upon a Time” has ended its lengthy run at ABC, executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are moving on to a new adventure. The duo have signed on as writers and executive producers of Steven Spielberg’s revival of “Amazing Stories” for Apple.
