Taking its title from the 61 names found in a notebook when he was arrested, 61: Scorecard Killer is based rather loosely on the crimes of Randy Kraft. Kraft was convicted of the rape and murder of sixteen young men and is suspected of fifty-one other killings. Kraft was arrested in 1983 after police pulled him over for a suspected DUI and found a dead body in his car’s passenger seat.
The biggest difference between fact and fiction is that directors Poison Rouge and Domiziano Cristopharo have updated the film to the present day. We see this right away in the prelude, as Randy, uses his smartphone to print out photos of murder victims to post on his wall and dance naked in front of.

Ambulance 61 is back as it should be — with paramedics Brett (Kara Killmer) and Violet (Hanako Greensmith) both on board — but there are some changes for Firehouse 51 on Chicago Fire. Season 11 kicked off with Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) dealing with the aftermath of one of his cases, which followed them into their wedding night in the cabin. Plus, Brett broke up with Casey (Jesse Spencer) over the phone — and that’s just the beginning. During a recent press day for One Chicago’s new seasons, Greensmith offered a few teases for what’s ahead. Switching up a Love Triangle In the premiere, Violet’s ex Gallo (Alberto Rosende) told her what Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) did to ensure she’d keep her spot on 61, and the two reconciled — and were able to go public with their relationship since he transferred. While Gallo clearly still has feelings for the paramedic,...

The Critics Choice Assn. has selected Billy Crystal to receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony on March 13.
A Billy Crystal life achievement reel might look a lot like a history of American showbiz. Crystal’s family roots are embedded in the greatness of American music via his father and his uncle Milt Gabler’s Commodore Records, home to recordings by blues and jazz greats such as Bessie Smith, Bix Beiderbecke and, most stunningly, Billie Holiday. How many showbiz family trees include Holiday’s landmark 1939 record, “Strange Fruit,” named by Time magazine as best song of the century?
In his 20s, Crystal worked his share of 1970s comedy club stages, first as part of a comedy trio known as “3’s Company,” then as a solo act. Variety caught the trio in 1973 and it’s clear from the review that Crystal’s trademark skills as the...

In the new movie “Here Today,” Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish play an unlikely duo who form a May-December friendship. Off-screen, the comedy stars have grown just as close.
In fact, when Haddish celebrated her bat mitzvah in late 2019 with a star-studded shindig, Crystal was in attendance alongside Wanda Sykes, Common, Jimmy Kimmel, Chelsea Handler, Kevin Nealon and Sarah Silverman. While the party (held on Haddish’s 40th birthday) doubled as the red-carpet premiere for Haddish’s Netflix special “Black Mitzvah,” the intimate ceremony that preceded it was real, and Crystal played a special role.
“We had just wrapped the film. It was right before Thanksgiving, if I recall,” Crystal tells Variety in a joint interview with Haddish. “Tiffany called me and said, ‘I’m getting bat mitzvahed and I want you to do an Aliyah’ — which is a prayer right before she’s going to read from the Torah...

Billy Crystal has earned the right to be choosy. After nearly 50 years in the entertainment industry — from roasting Muhammad Ali to being a cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” hosting his own variety show and helping to modernize the romantic comedy, even serving as the contemporary ideal Oscars host, and that’s just the funny stuff — Crystal has hit comedic milestone after comedic milestone.
He’s also starred in some of the box office’s biggest hits, hosted the Grammys, directed four films, won six primetime Emmys, plus a Tony and a Mark Twain Prize. He even got to be friends with his childhood hero, Mickey Mantle, after directing HBO feature “61*” about Mantle and Roger Maris’ quest to break Babe Ruth’s home run record. It’s been a good run, and it’s not over yet.

“For Life” adapts the real-life story of its executive producer Isaac Wright Jr., who was serving a life sentence for a wrongful conviction, but became a lawyer and got himself exonerated in the process. Hank Steinberg created the legal drama for ABC, with the character of Aaron Wallace played by Nicholas Pinnock as surrogate for Wright. “Isaac was arrested back in the late 80s and in prison in the 90s, so it’s 25/30 years later and we’re updating his story in a number of ways,” Steinberg explains in an exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above).
“The experiences that Aaron has in prison are loosely inspired by some of the things that happened to Isaac, but he was never involved in a big prison riot with 50 Cent,” Steinberg laughs as he references the fellow executive producer who got the rights to Wright’s story and later recurred...

Tiffany Haddish and Billy Crystal will star together in the Astute Films’ comedy Here Today, a project that the latter Saturday Night Live alum will co-write and direct.
Here Today is billed as a May/September romantic comedy – but without the romance. Crystal plays veteran comedy writer Charlie Berns, who is slowly but surely losing his grip on reality. He befriends a talented young New York street singer Emma Paige played by Haddish and they form an unlikely, touching friendship that defies the generation gap aside and redefines the meaning of love and trust.
Here Today marks Crystal’s eighth time directing and his third on a feature film following Mr. Saturday Night and Forget Paris, in which he also starred. Crystal directed the HBO film 61*, starring Barry Pepper and Thomas Jane in 2001 which earned him an Emmy and Director’s Guild Nomination as Best Director for a film made for television.

Billy Crystal turned 70 years old in March, but don’t think that means the actor-writer-director-comedian is slowing down. “I remember when they asked George Burns if he would ever retire. He said, ‘To what? What would I do?’” Crystal says with a laugh. “That’s how I feel.”
Far from retiring, Crystal is “busier than I’ve been in a long time,” he says, with projects including a movie premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, a musical version of his film “Mr. Saturday Night” and plans to step behind the camera to direct his first film since 2001’s acclaimed drama “61*.”
