Despite having a presence in literature for over a century, the sci-fi western has remained a grossly overlooked genre. In recent years, except for the underrated Cowboys & Aliens, no other major venture has tried to take the risk of experimenting with the genre, which highlights its uniqueness of amalgamating the Wild West with the complexities of science fiction. Amazon Studios’ Outer Range, created by Brian Watkins, is a meticulously crafted thriller that highlights the genre’s untapped potential through a heady mix of murder mystery, family/social drama, and temporal shenanigans. The first season released a couple of years ago consisted of eight episodes, which had a lot to unpack, which is why, as the second season of Outer Range premieres this week, we would like to briefly discuss every key point viewers need to remember to get into the series with ease.

How do we live in a time where the Academy still hasn’t recognised Hollywood’s stunt community with an Oscar category? When films such as John Wick: Chapter 4 or Mad Max: Fury Road have pushed the boundaries of stunt excellence, it seems mystifying. Thankfully, David Leitch’s romcom/action blockbuster The Fall Guy — based on the 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors — is an apt reminder for its necessary inclusion. And it makes the case while having a lot of fun along the way.
Leitch, a former stunt performer, presents this as a movie-lover’s dream. It follows in the same self-referential footsteps as Bowfinger, Tropic Thunder and Babylon, a behind-the-scenes depiction of a Hollywood poking fun at itself. Almost every scene comes brilliantly infused with a tongue-in-cheek, meta in-joke about the filmmaking process. But you still feel a sense of warmth and affection in every frame. Each...

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" films are an embarrassment of riches. With a strong ensemble cast, gorgeous visuals, an arresting story, and production design to die for, the filmmaker's take on Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi saga is firing on all cylinders. The movies also have fantastic effects makeup; a talented team is responsible for turning Austin Butler into a scowling, pale villain, etching runes onto the faces of the Bene Gesserit, and making everyone generally look both hot and windswept.
Oscar-nominated makeup artist Donald Mowat is credited as head of the makeup department on both 2021's "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two," but in 2020, he told Inside The Film Room that he nearly didn't get to work on the movies after all. Mowat previously collaborated extensively with Daniel Craig, doing his makeup on films like "Cowboys & Aliens" and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" before joining the Bond franchise for "Skyfall" and Spectre.

A disaster from 2010, Noah Ringer’s The Last Airbender was a disappointing live adaptation of the much-adored source material, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The animated show was aired for the first time in 2005 and it instantly became a fan favorite, as fans adored the show for three seasons. While the film had a plethora of things wrong with it, one of the most visibly wrong things present in the film was the casting.
Noah Ringer as Aang in The Last Airbender (2010)
In the show, the characters were from different races, but in the film the characters were whitewashed, making the film an eyesore. Noah Rider portrayed the role of Aang, the last Airbender who had a difficult time surviving epic flop, and it was his passion that saved him from falling into the depths of depression.

Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" (both 2008) in many important ways weren't yet part of the then-nascent Marvel Cinematic Universe when they were first made. Favreau put in a post-credits stinger with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury more as a wink to fans than as an announcement that larger film projects were afoot. Additionally, Downey's cameo in "Incredible" was treated equally casually, with the actors reportedly improvising their dialogue. It would only be until after Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009 that plans for an MCU would be put into place in earnest. In many ways, then, it would be Favreau's "Iron Man 2" in 2010 that launched the MCU properly and put plans for an "Avengers" feature film into motion.

Some movies just don't seem to age, and "Blade Runner" is one of them. Aside from the fact that the film is one of the most influential sci-fi flicks in cinema history, thanks to the efforts of director Ridley Scott and his production designer Lawrence G. Paull, the 1982 classic remains one of the most stunningly realized films ever made. The immersive world of Scott's dystopian sci-fi gave the impression, as Christopher Nolan once put it, of a "whole world outside the frame of the scene." That's made even more impressive when you consider the production team had a limited VFX budget and constructed most of the sets and visual effects practically.
In other words, "Blade Runner" doesn't look a tad dated even more than 40 years after its debut. Alas, the same can't be said for the cast. The sad truth is that, despite Joe Russo celebrating the inevitable rise of...

There's a reason why "Yellowstone" feels as authentic as it does. For all the backstabbing, fistfights, and unchecked greed on display that make the show seem so outlandish at times, the countless scenes showing everyday life on a fully functioning Montana cattle ranch are meticulously researched and crafted. There is some true cowboying on display and all of the actors have had to endure an outdoor boot camp before the start of each season. There are even a few real-life cowboys featured throughout the series, including actor and "Yellowstone" creator Taylor Sheridan who plays the recurring role of rodeo rider and horse trader Travis Wheatley. Actor Forrie J. Smith, who plays the handlebar mustache-sporting old-timer Lloyd Pierce, also grew up competing in rodeos before trying his hand at stunt work and horse wrangling for the movies.

Cowboys & Aliens was a Western directed by Iron Man filmmaker Jon Favreau. The title of the movie was exactly what it sounded, pitting cowboys and aliens against each other in old times. Favreau had been meaning to make a Western for some time after his 1996 hit Swingers. Adding aliens to the classic sub-genre helped Favreau expand it even more.

"The Mask of Zorro" is now 25 years old, though you might not know by watching it. Director Martin Campbell's 1998 film is a sexy, high-octane swashbuckler that, along with filmmaker Stephen Sommers' remake of "The Mummy," was likely responsible for the bisexual awakening of an entire generation in the late '90s. Leads Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones certainly light up the screen as newbie Zorro-in-training, Alejandro, and his predecessor's daughter, Elena, whether they're cutting a rug across the dance floor or mixing swordplay with flirtation. Then there's the breathtaking practical stunts and set pieces, which Campbell stages with the utmost elegance in collaboration with his cast and crew -- not least of all his longtime director of photography Phil Méheux, who imbues the film with a visual grandiosity befitting of a Western epic.

It is not in any way uncommon for two or more seemingly unrelated film genres to come together, at best resulting in, say, 2013’s time travel rom-com “About Time” and at worst something akin to 2011’s dust bowl intergalactic romp “Cowboys and Aliens.” A gritty street film with touches of comedy and a sci-fi angle that seemingly takes its cues from an abridged version of “Us” or “Happy Death Day?” Why not?

Disney, as a studio that has been around for a full century, is known broadly as one of the most successful entertainment companies in history. The number of classic films the House of Mouse has produced is staggering, and the hits far outweigh the misses. Although Disney has missed and missed big on a few occasions, with 2013's "The Lone Ranger" ranking as one of the biggest of those big misses. So much so that one could argue that it's among the biggest box office bombs in history -- not just limited to Disney. At the height of Johnny Depp's superstardom, this was a grand misfire for the ages.

James Arness starred as lawman Marshall Matt Dillon on "Gunsmoke" for an incredible run of 20 seasons from 1955-1975. Until "The Simpsons" surpassed it in 2018, the epic series dramatizing the American West was the longest running television show in history. Originally, John Wayne was offered the role but turned it down because he had no interest in committing to a weekly TV series. If he had accepted the part, it's incredibly unlikely the series would have ever run that long, and more TV movies of "Gunsmoke" probably would have hit the airwaves instead.
During the first couple of years of "Gunsmoke," filming took place at the legendary Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio, one of the premiere Western movie towns of the 1950s with multiple locations and a working train helping to fill in for the real Dodge City. Sci-fi writer Damon Lindelof has made quite the name for himself since he's arrived on the scene, tackling incredibly popular material such as the hit show "Lost", Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel "Prometheus," and most recently HBO's brilliant sequel series "Watchmen." Should anyone still be on the fence about Lindelof's talents after some high-profile misses like "Cowboys & Aliens," "Star Trek Into Darkness," and 2015's "Tomorrowland," well, I implore you to check out his work on "The Leftovers," which has earned him the benefit of the doubt for the foreseeable future as far as I'm concerned.
The next item on Lindelof's agenda, however, appears both of a piece and miles apart from his previous output. Peacock suddenly seems like the belle of the streaming wars ball, riding high off the success of Rian Johnson's "Poker Face" series. Now, the streaming service is partnering up with Lindelof on its most out-there premise yet.

There's every reason in the world for an actor to not do their own stunts. Stunt performers make up an entire sub-industry in the filmmaking world. It's simple enough to find a stunt person whose physicality matches the actor's, allowing them to serve as the celebrity's double without making the audience bat an eye. On top of that, the inherently dangerous nature of stunt work isn't just a liability to the production, but a risk to the performer's safety. Why not leave it to the professionals?
Because stunts come with serious street cred, that's why. Okay, so the actual reasoning might be a bit more nuanced. The different explanations for why an actor might want to perform their own stunts are as varied as the stunts themselves. Whether they're jumping out of a building or being lifted off 80 feet into the air, each actor has their own motivations for putting themselves in danger.

Harrison Ford may have just made the jump to TV, but the legendary actor has already said he’s on board for 1923 season 2. The series is the latest from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and acts as a prequel to Sheridan’s flagship show while also a sequel to the series 1883. There are two major, notable exterior locations in Richard Marquand's 1983 sci-fi romp "Return of the Jedi." In the early scenes of the film, the dashing pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford) must be rescued from a crime lord's desert palace where he has been frozen in stasis and hung on the wall as a trophy. The scene's desert exteriors were shot in Arizona, in a part of the desert called Buttercup Valley. In the climax of the desert scenes, a full-size floating skiff -- the pleasure barge of the evil Jabba the Hutt -- was blown up. To this day, one can visit the filming site and potentially find pieces of the barge, or of the Sarlacc, the film's pit-like desert monster.
The other notable location was the massive redwood forests located in Northern California. The "Jedi" locations were notable, as it was the first time a "Star Wars" movie...

Harrison Ford will probably be remembered foremost as Han Solo — but not if he can help it. While Ford may well be the greatest movie star of the latter 20th century, it feels like he would've preferred to be a character actor, one that would sink into part after different part, not play the same archetype over and over.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ford mentioned that he "likes to change genres" from film to film. Not all of these genres have been successful for him, though he maintains that even his flops, "were entered with the best of intentions." Still, when Ford stars in an unsuccessful film like "Morning Glory" or "Cowboys & Aliens," he tries not to dwell on it:
"The first job of a movie is to make its money back. God knows why something doesn't work. It doesn't usually make that much difference...

Harrison Ford is one of the biggest movie stars of all time. He went from the "cool big brother" in roles like Han Solo and Indiana Jones, then graduated to "America's Dad" in the Jack Ryan movies and "Air Force One." What kid in the '80s didn't want to be Ford, and what kid in the '90s didn't want to be raised (and rescued from terrorists) by him? As an '80s and '90s kid, I'm well-versed in Ford's filmography, having seen almost all of his movies. Yes, even the obscure ones like "The Frisco Kid." Okay, I've missed a lot of his 2000s and 2010s run, but let's be honest, Ford's choices have been pretty inexplicable ("Cowboys & Aliens?"; "Extreme Measures?"; "Morning Glory?"). No, I prefer prime Ford.

At 80 years old, Harrison Ford isn’t exactly a young man, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be kicking ass in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The last film in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, included more than a few jokes about Indy’s age, and the original script for Dial of Destiny included even more, but Harrison Ford told THR that they ditched all of them.
“Yeah. In [Dial of Destiny] there were a lot of old jokes in the script,” Harrison Ford said. “We took them all out. There is a moment where he observes himself in this situation and says, ‘What the fuck am I doing in here?’ But I hate what I call ‘talking about the story.’ I want to see circumstances in which the audience gets a chance to experience the story, not to be led through the...

Gunsmoke was on television for so long that it was likely one of those shows that felt like a rite of passage for rising stars. After all, with 20 seasons of television, there are plenty of opportunities for actors looking for a big break to snag a guest appearance on the popular Western TV show. Buck Taylor did a lot more than just that. The actor joined star James Arness for roughly half the iconic series’ run. Here’s the wild road that eventually led him to Gunsmoke.

Once an actor becomes synonymous with a particular character, it can often complicate their personal and professional lives. But Gunsmoke actor Buck Taylor seems nothing but grateful for his association with that show. In fact, he credits Gunsmoke for bringing many great things into his life. Taylor even claims he wouldn’t have met his wife without his role on Gunsmoke.

Buck Taylor wasn’t part of the original cast of Gunsmoke. But the actor has become a significant part of its legacy. The series – which began life as a radio drama – premiered on television in 1955, with James Arness as U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon. However, the road that led Taylor to Gunsmoke involves a path the actor very nearly walked down instead of success as a TV star.

For nearly Gunsmoke‘s entire run, the show principally starred Arness and Amanda Blake. But around 1967, Taylor joined as a character named Newly O’Brien. Following Burt Reynolds’ Quint Asper and Roger Ewing’s Thad Greenwood, Newly was the latest in a series of acting deputies who played an ongoing role on the show.

For the first time in years, DC and Marvel superhero movies failed to dominate the annual theatrical marketplace in 2022 as comic book flicks were overshadowed by big-budget franchises like “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World Dominion,” which rose to the top of the box office heap instead.
With 1.5 billion for “Avatar” and 1.49 billion for “Top Gun,” these sequels finally broke the chokehold that superheroes have held on the global box office since 2017, the last time that blockbuster movies unrelated to DC Studios or Marvel led the movie pipeline.
Meanwhile, 2023 brings a slew of big franchise titles, including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Fast X” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which rank among the most anticipated despite featuring not a single caped crusader.

Harrison Ford aiming a pistol is an indelible American image, yet one almost entirely divorced from the indelible American genre that so often yields such macho iconography. Many actors who carried themselves as well as they carried their sidearm — the likes of Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Kurt Russell, Jack Palance, Mel Gibson — either did so in westerns or eventually made their way to the genre. But Ford the cowboy isn’t ingrained in our collective consciousness. Sure, he dabbled in TV shoot-em-ups before he made the A-list and later carried best-forgotten movies “The Frisco Kid” and “Cowboys & Aliens.” The latter even calls to mind Ford’s breakout stance — a little space western called “Star Wars” — but it’s not Han Solo’s vest or skills as a marksman that make him stand out.
At the risk of stating the obvious, there’s something about his face. Eastwood and Russell...

To call Damon Lindelof ambitious feels a bit like saying James Cameron has a soft spot for the ocean. Shows like "Lost," "The Leftovers," and "Watchmen" have seen the writer and producer wrestling with all manner of daunting topics, from America's legacy of white supremacy to the very meaning of existence and the effects of collective trauma. On the film side, Lindelof has even dared to try his hand at reinventing franchises as legendary as "Star Trek" and "Alien," with polarizing yet undeniably interesting results (to say nothing of his efforts on big swings like "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Tomorrowland").

Let’s start with The Beatles. At the end of 1968 the Fab Four released The White Album, which would become tabloid-notorious within a year because some hippie cult leader named Charles Manson sent his followers on a killing spree under the guise of the hidden meanings he’d uncovered in their songs. What no one really remembers nowadays, though, is that there was already a track on that album aimed squarely at the kind of weirdos who looked for hidden meanings in Beatles songs.

Chris Evans joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers/Captain America in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” but it was only the actor’s face that fans saw in the first act of the movie. To show a younger Steve Rogers before he is injected with a serum that turns him into a muscular superhero, the VFX team put Evans’ face on the body of a much scrawnier actor. It turns out that actor could’ve been none other than Jeremy Strong had he not turned down the “role.”
“They told me there was a top-secret film about Captain America,” Strong recently told The Times UK. “They needed someone to play Captain America’s young body, before he turns into a superhero. They said they needed a transformational actor and would use CGI to put the actual actor’s face and voice over my own.”

Following the failure of 2013's "The Lone Ranger," The Atlantic published a piece by Michael Agresta about why the Western movie matters. It posited that Hollywood's recent offerings around that time misunderstood the genre's appeal and necessary themes. "For a century plus," Agresta writes, "we have relied on Westerns to teach us our history and reflect our current politics and our place in the world. We can ill afford to lose that mirror now, especially just because we don't like what we see staring back at us." Agresta wasn't wrong, but the Western he desired was underneath his nose — on television.

It looks like “Outer Range” isn’t the only supernatural show coming to Amazon Prime this Fall. That series, about a Wyoming community that stumbles upon strangeness out in the woods, already has hype to spare. And so long as “Outer Range” isn’t TV’s equivalent of 2011’s “Cowboys & Aliens,” it looks like it’ll live up to the hype as a spooky western hybrid.
