As any Celine Dion fan will tell you, the Quebecois singer — also known as Canada’s National Treasure — is something of a comedian. Whether she’s remixing “My Heart Will Go On” with DJ Steve Aoki, using only her voice, or putting her own spin on “Baby Shark” in a “Carpool Karaoke” segment, Dion is hilarious. And so it’s only fitting that for her first major biopic, the legend was played by a comedian.
French comic actor, stand-up and director Valérie Lemercier was more than up to the task with the Gaumont-produced and distributed “Aline,” which she directs and stars in as Aline Dieu, a fictional character who is meant to be Dion.
The film — which received Dion’s blessing via the artist’s French manager — is based loosely on the “My Heart Will Go On” singer’s life, though Lemercier changed names and certain events so as...

PARIS -- Columbia's French distribution arm and Gallic exhibitor Gaumont have reached a joint agreement to dissolve their partnership, the parties announced Thursday. Taking into account the escalating volume of films distributed by Gaumont and Columbia in an increasingly competitive environment, the two companies have opted to launch separate distribution organizations in France starting in July 2007. The Gaumont/Columbia distribution banner plans to honor its three-year joint distribution venture begun on July 1, 2004. Since its creation, Gaumont Columbia Tristar Films France has distributed more than 70 films, including Spiderman 2, Palais Royal, Closer, Hitch, The Da Vinci Code and the recent international success Casino Royale, which was released in France on Wednesday. Gaumont Columbia Tristar France declined to comment on details of the split.

PARIS -- French cinema group Gaumont posted full-year 2005 results Tuesday, unveiling an 18% hike in revenue from the previous year to 100.2 million ($119.2 million) along with a 21.7% drop in net profit to 7.2 million ($8.5 million). The group attributed the mixed results to the hit-or-miss nature of its film slate. The strong theatrical performances of Palais Royale!, a comedy inspired by Europe's royals (2.7 million admissions), and Je vous trouve tres beau (You Are So Beautiful), about a French farmer who seeks a Romanian girl to replace his dead wife (2.3 million entries since January), were weighed down by a pair of expensive flops -- Eric Lartigau's Un ticket pour l'espace (A Ticket to Outer Space) and Eric Valli's La Piste (The Trail), the company said. Brisk video sales of Alain Berberian's The Corsica File, starring Jean Reno and Christian Clavier, and 36 Quai des Orfevres, starring Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu, helped profits, while catalog sales grew 31.7% to 47.7 million ($56.7 million).

PARIS -- French actress, writer and director Valerie Lemercier has been named mistress of ceremonies and will present the 31st edition of France's Cesar Awards on Feb. 25, organizers said Tuesday. Lemercier, who won the Cesar for best supporting actress in 1994 for her role in The Visitors, and was nominated in the same category in 1992 for L'Operation Corned-Beef, recently directed and acted in Palais Royal!, a spoof on Europe's royal families. The Cesars are judged each year by the 3,300 members of the French Academy for Cinema Arts and Techniques -- the Gallic equivalent of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The ceremony, widely regarded as a curtain-raiser to the Oscars, will be held at the Theatre du Chatelet in the heart of Paris and broadcast live on French television by Canal Plus.
