It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Tilda Swinton famously cut her acting teeth on the experimental films of late director Derek Jarman such as Caravaggio and The Garden as well as life-long friend Joanna Hogg’s debut short Caprice and Sally Potter’s Orlando.
Nearly 50 years later, she has continued to work with Hogg as well as in the experimental cinema arena, finding a new Jarman-esque kindred spirit in Thai artist and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
Speaking in an in-conversation event at the Marrakech Film Festival on Monday, the actress revealed how some of the big commercial studio pictures she has worked on across her career have felt personally more experimental to her than her avant-garde work.
“I’ve been really fortunate to have some adventures in worlds of filmmaking that I never thought I would be able to go into,” she said.

Acclaimed director, writer, and actor Greta Gerwig is set to helm the next adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Gerwig, who has previously directed the Oscar-nominated films Lady Bird and Little Women, will bring her unique vision and style to the magical world of Narnia, starting with the first book in the series, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The film, which is being produced by Netflix and Walden Media, will feature a diverse cast of newcomers and veterans, including Tilda Swinton as the White Witch, Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan, and David Oyelowo as the voice of Mr. Beaver. The roles of the four Pevensie children, who enter Narnia through a wardrobe and embark on an epic adventure to free the land from the witch’s eternal winter, have not been announced yet.

Director Greta Gerwig, who is currently basking in the success of her latest directorial, the fantasy-comedy film ‘Barbie’, is also set to direct the next installments in the ‘Narnia’ franchise which has got her spooked. Stating that she hasn’t even begun working on the two films she has to direct, she’s “terrified” of working on the ‘Narnia’ projects.
Speaking to the ‘Inside Total Film’ podcast, the ‘Little Women’ director said that she’s unsure of whether her own iteration of the fantasy world based on author C.S Lewis’s best-selling novels from the 1950’s would be able to capture the aesthetic or spirit of the novels in the same way she handled ‘Barbie’.
Describing her uncertainty, Greta said: “I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start.”

Although rumors had circulated online for several months, it wasn’t until a recent New Yorker profile that confirmation arrived regarding Greta Gerwig tackling “The Chronicles of Narnia” film adaptations for Netflix. Gerwig is reportedly attached to direct two movies based on the famous C.S. Lewis fantasy novels.
“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it, but I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,” Gerwig told the Total Film podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) about entering Narnia. “I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ No, I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary. And it’s exciting.”

Barbie director Greta Gerwig will soon be shifting her focus to another mythical land as she’s been tapped to write and direct at least two Chronicles of Narnia movies for Netflix. While speaking on the Total Film podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Greta Gerwig admitted that she’s “properly scared” of tackling Narnia.
“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it, but I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,” Greta Gerwig said of the Narnia movies. “I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ No, I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary. And it’s exciting.” It’s a big project, no doubt, but I have faith Gerwig can pull it off; And maybe we’ll finally get a complete adaptation of C.

Everyone expects Greta Gerwig’s Barbie to be a big hit, but it looks like the writer-director might be dipping her toe into another big franchise soon. Tucked away in a large New Yorker piece about the future of Mattel films comes a mention that Gerwig’s next job is to write and direct at least two Chronicles of Narnia films for Netflix.

Though Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie movie hasn’t hit theaters yet, Mattel Films is already looking forward to dozens of other projects in development based on its IP, including Daniel Kaluuya’s Barney adaptation. In a profile of the toy company’s film division published by The New Yorker, one executive called it an “A24-type” movie which will be “surrealistic” and similar to the work of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.
“We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids,” Mattel Films exec Kevin McKeon said about the Barney movie. “It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney — just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”

Painterly animation gets a new twist in Netflix’s “The Magician’s Elephant” (currently streaming), directed by VFX supervisor Wendy Rogers. Adapted from Kate Dicamillo’s 2009 children’s book about two siblings separated by war, the first-time director sought a soft aesthetic to help convey magical realism.
“When I came to the project, it already had producer Julia Pistor [‘Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events’], and they switched from live action to animation,” Rogers told IndieWire. “I met Julia and pitched my vision to Netflix and was lucky to get it.” Rogers wanted the world and overall animation style to be physically grounded, while the soft cloud-filled sky and painted texturing served as part of the magical realism.
“I think the themes that are in the book — belief in the impossible and taking action on that belief through curiosity and always questioning the world — are inspiring,” she added.

Georgie Henley, who played Lucy Pevensie in “The Chronicles of Narnia” film trilogy, revealed on Tuesday that when she was in college, a rare bacterial infection nearly led to the amputation of her right arm. After a series of “grueling” surgeries and grafts, doctors were able to save it, but she was left with scarring that she concealed from the public for nearly 10 years.
The actress, who is now 27, shared a photo to Twitter of herself showing off the scars on her arm, along with the caption, “finally free.”

Diego Boneta was 15 years old when he was close to starring in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” “They did the audition in Mexico City,” the “Father of the Bride” actor tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “They flew me to L.A. to test. Andrew Garfield just reported a crime. Apparently in the year 2008, when chaos clearly reigned supreme, the then 25-year-old actor was denied the titular role in "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" because — and this may sound insane — he wasn't "handsome enough." Believe it or not, someone looked at a headshot of this future heartthrob and against all odds decided he wasn't hot enough to share the screen with a talking lion or sword-wielding mice. Garfield recently told this tragic tale to Variety, where he said:
"I remember I was so desperate. I auditioned for Prince Caspian in 'The Chronicles of...

Ben Barnes is celebrating a milestone birthday with some help from his famous friends.
Best known for his acting roles in Shadow and Bone, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Punisher and Westworld, Barnes is using the occasion of his 40th birthday to finally release the music that he’s talked about for years. It comes together on the five-song EP Songs For You.
To augment the sounds with video, he enlisted Westwold costar Evan Rachel Wood for his 11:11 video, and now has his The Punisher costar, Floriana Lima, in his latest, Rise Up, released today, with the official EP bowing tomorrow. The new video was directed by actress Georgia King (Dev and The New Normal).
Why now?
“I think the last 18 months has made us all question what’s important to us,” Barnes said. “What our priorities are, and what we’d like to spend our time...

When it comes to Shadow and Bone's main antagonist, you either love or hate him. However, when it comes to the man who portrays The Darkling? Ben Barnes makes himself impossible to hate.
Recently the 40-year-old actor has been on everyone's radar!
Whether you fell for his handsome features or charming accent-- here are six ways to feed your growing obsession with the Brit.
1. Travel Back to Your Childhood with Prince Caspian
Prince Caspian is the character who most know Barnes portrayed; this was his first lead role after small roles in films like Stardust, guest roles on television, and indie features such as Bigga Than Ben.
Barnes portrayed Prince Caspian in two installments of the Narnia series, the first being released in 2008.

Like so many actors fortunate enough to work over the past year, there was a two-week stretch last fall when Ben Barnes found himself sequestered alone in a Canadian hotel room. He was there for “Shadow and Bone,” the new fantasy series Netflix hopes will become one of its signature genre franchises alongside “The Witcher” and “Stranger Things.” The show had largely wrapped production just before the pandemic lockdown, but Barnes still needed to film some final scenes as the powerful and mysterious General Kirigan, also known as the Darkling, who possesses the ability to control darkness and wield it as a deadly weapon.
Before he could dive back into all that, though, there was that pesky mandatory quarantine to endure. So to pass the time, Barnes started making his own music.

The renewed thirst for Shadow and Bone's Ben Barnes has steadily been building since it was first announced in 2019 he would join the Netflix adaptation as General Kirigan. On a personal note, my love for the 39-year-old actor began after seeing him in 2007's Stardust and was firmly cemented with his role as the titular Prince Caspian in 2008's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Since then, he's been both villains and heroes with roles like Logan Delos on Westworld, Billy Russo on The Punisher, Dorian Grey in Dorian Grey, Tom Ward in Seventh Son, and Samuel Adams on Sons of Liberty. Thanks to Shadow and Bone, which premieres on Netflix on April 23, he's back in the fantasy element so many of us first fell in love with him in.
It's hard not to be drawn in by Ben as not only is he gorgeous, he sings and absolutely adores his fans.

Anyone who adapts the works of C.S. Lewis for the screen will find they have a few odd things to contend with. We have never seen a screen version of Prince Caspian, for example, in which young children Susan and Lucy go around cavorting with Bacchus, the god of wine, and his wild Bacchants, for the very good reason that it comes across as seriously strange and more than a little disturbing.
But the oddest moment in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Lewis’ first written The Chronicles of Narnia novel and the most often adapted, cannot be so easily lifted out. In that fantasy epic, the first major sign that the White Witch’s eternal winter is fading is the appearance of Father Christmas (aka Santa Claus), who has been kept out of Narnia ever since the Witch arrived.

Children of the 2000s may have grown up with the three live-action movies produced between 2005-2008 and anyone of any generation may have read C.S. Lewis’ classic novels as a kid, but a new version of The Chronicles of Narnia is on the way. Netflix acquired the rights to adapt the seven fantasy books back in 2018 and immediately announced their plans to create new TV series and films based on the world of Narnia.
So, what have we learned about the company’s intentions for the franchise since then? Well, honestly, not much, as it appears the streaming giant is taking its time in building up a massive shared universe before they start putting anything into production. Our last update came in June 2019, when Coco co-writer Matthew Aldrich was named as architect and overseer of all projects. Narnia fans have examined the evidence, though, and come up with some...

Out of all the potential literary franchises that started appearing with increasing regularity to try and cash in on the success of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter during the early years of the 21st Century, it appeared for a while as though The Chronicles of Narnia was one of the few destined for any sort of continued success.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was a huge hit, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2005 after raking in $745 million at the box office, but despite spawning two sequels, the adaptations of C.S. Lewis’ fantasy series never managed to recapture those heights. Both Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader earned over $300 million less than the opening installment, and any plans for further adventures in Narnia were ultimately shelved.

Legendary satiric caricature artist Mort Drucker, a longtime contributor to Mad magazine, died on Thursday, April 9, at his home in Woodbury, N.Y., according to The New York Times. He was 91. No cause of death was announced.

He was recognized for his work with the Ncs Special Features Award, Reuben Award and induction into the Hall of Fame.”
Like comedians were made with one appearance on The Tonight Show, Mort Drucker could forever engrave a craven image on the public consciousness with one sketch. A movie wasn’t a smash until it got mashed by Mad.

Of course, there wasn’t even time for doubt, since the Killing Eve Season 3 announcement was made in April at the AMC Networks Summit (BBC America is co-owned by AMC and BBC Studios), only one day after the second season premiere. Interestingly enough, the network continued its preemptive renewal strategy in January 2020, giving an early order for Season 4!

Underscoring the growing appeal of Dominican Republic productions for the international industry, Media Luna New Films has acquired world sales rights to two new film productions: “Mosh,” starring “The Chronicles of Narnia’s” Damian Alcazar, and “Dominicanas,” about how Dominican models have taken the fashion world by storm.

This year, a record 928 people were invited to join the motion picture academy and will be eligible to vote for the 2019 Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous four years: 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.
The executive committee of the branch must endorse the application before forwarding it to the Board of Governors for final approval.

In an astonishing move to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, a record 928 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call; this year, they did not invite Kobe Bryant although he won an Oscar for animated short “Dear Basketball.”
Clearly, people of color (38 percent) and women (49 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.
In 2017, the Academy invited 744 new members.
Seventeen Oscar winners are among the new invited members (Melissa Etheridge) and 92 Oscar nominees. Nine of the 17 branches invited more women than men. The percentage of women in the Academy has risen from...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited a record number of new members, extending invites to 928 people.
The Academy topped last year’s record of 774 new members. It invited 683 members in 2016 and 322 in 2015, which were also record numbers.
The expansion of Academy membership to more than 9,200 stems from an ongoing effort to diversify its ranks following uproar over the lack of African-American nominees in 2015 and 2016, which culminated in 2016’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Two weeks after the widely criticized nominations were announced, AMPAS announced a goal to double the number of women and diverse members of the Academy by 2020.
If all the 2018 invitees accept, the overall membership would be 9,226.
Monday’s invitations, if accepted, will result in 38% of the Oscars’ governing body’s new class being comprised of people of color, increasing their representation from 13% in 2017 to 16%.
Meanwhile, the new class is 49% female, boosting the total representation of women...

Andrew Garfield has hit many peaks (and valleys) in his career, from doing big, mega-blockbuster movies (“The Amazing Spider-Man“) to working with Martin Scorsese (“Silence“), but things didn’t always work out for the young actor. It seems at one point in his career, he was keen on playing the titular character in “The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” but he didn’t have the right stuff, or more accurately, the right face.

Andrew Garfield is currently one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, but the 33-year-old star tells Et there’s “plenty” of roles he didn't land, including one that “really stung” just before his career took off.

“Ben Barnes ultimately got it,” Garfield adds. “Ben Barnes, I'll get ya! No, I really just wanted that part… I think the feedback was ‘he's not handsome enough.’ What can you do? Hey, I'm not handsome enough for Prince Caspian.”
