Enterprise investigates the apparent death of a Starfleet officer on a communications relay station.
This is a fairly lacklustre attempt at using the premise of the movie Laura and applying to Star Trek.
It has a good central concept that on paper should be great as a mystery and character drama, but unfortunately it relies on technobabble to explain most key points and the characters are not that interesting.
It's hard to go into the sci-fi detail without spoiling the plot, but it's safe to say that much of what drives the plot is based on explanations of a number of technical points. If you are a fan of this aspect of Star Trek you will probably like the episode, but for me it's does not make for a particularly cinematic experience.
It could have been better if the character moments were good, but in typical Star Trek fashion the romance does not work. Geordie obsessing once again over someone he barely knows is not very interesting and there is no chemistry between LeVar Burton and Renée Jones. Given his character's romantic history on the show, this plot should not really have been considered, unless they wanted to purely focus on his loneliness and desperation as a tragic character study. (Not likely!)
All that being said I like the final reveal and it feels all the more frustrating this could have been a strong episode if the details within the basic plot structure were better.
There are some decent performances from the likes of Patrick Stewart and the Klingon actors, but nothing is particularly memorable.
