Storyline
Did you know
- TriviaFirst appearance of veteran Star Trek actor Vaughn Armstrong in the Voyager series. Amstrong is probably best known for his recurring role as admiral Forrest in Star Trek: Enterprise (2001). This is also his first time playing a Romulan in a Star Trek series after having played Klingons and Cardassians in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). He would go on to make four more appearances in Voyager, playing a Borg, a Vidiian, a Hirogen and a Klingon.
- GoofsJaneway hypothesizes that the wormhole is ancient and has been collapsing for centuries. In Star Trek mythology, wormholes are generally unstable and very temporary. That's what makes the Bajoran wormhole in Deep Space Nine so unique and valuable. There is no evidence that the wormhole Voyager encounters here was ever stable and long-lasting.
- Quotes
The Doctor: If I see you in here again for an exercise-related injury, I'll have to discuss the matter with your superior officer.
Lieutenant Walter Baxter: [bewildered] Yes... sir.
The Doctor: You're fine now. You may leave.
Lieutenant Walter Baxter: [abashed] Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.
[leaves]
Kes: I don't think he'll make the mistake of ignoring you again.

Eye of the Needle is so well written and well acted. I found the main storyline, with the wormhole, highly compelling, and the surprising ending was unexpectedly touching. The secondary storyline with the holographic doctor was also touching. As well, it was interesting to see Captain Janeway in her nightgown with her hair down in one scene - it made her seem more like a regular person, a feminine woman at that, and not just a tough-as-nails Captain (although she is that too).
All in all, a really top-notch episode which I continued to think about for several days after watching it. I truly hope that there are many more well-written episodes like this one to come in this series.
