Narrator: A mountain has no need for people, but people do need mountains. We go to them for their beauty, for the exhilaration of standing closer to mysterious skies, for the feeling of triumph that comes from having labored to reach a summit. And I remember a day in the 1930's when I went to Waltons Mountain in search of manhood.

John Boy's First Hunt
This episode aired on October 5 1972, with this opening. A mountain has no need for people, but people do need mountains. We go to them for their beauty, for the exhilaration of standing closer to mysterious skies, for the feeling of triumph that comes from having labored to reach a summit. In addition, I remember a day in the 1930's when I went to Waltons Mountain in search of manhood. This was the first show that had two themes. The show opened with John Boy aiming a gun at Olivia chickens. Later that night while the family is eating they here something bothering the chickens. Therefore, John and John Boy get there guns and go outside to check things out, when John tells his son that there was a bear spotted in the area but he didn't want to say anything in front of the family. The next day the two friends along with John and John Boy head to mountain for John Boy first turkey hunt. Meanwhile Mary Ellen is dealing with her own problems. Mary Ellen has been putting money down to by a catcher mitt. While in the local store, JW comes in with another girl and she wants to know what JW thinks about the pretty dress? While on the mountain, the four come across an old Tom Turkey and the men want to give the first shot to John Boy. Now John Boy has the old Tom Turkey in is sight but the question is can he pull the trigger? Mean while back at the local store Mary Ellen has finally earned enough money for the catcher mitt and now she has to decide if it's the mitt or the dress. I love this episode because in my family, my half brothers did the hunting but I couldn't kill a deer or turkey that never did nothing to me. I love the roaming shots of the countryside of Waltons Mountain so I give this episode 10 weasel stars.
