Netflix seemingly heard everyone’s prayers a while ago and is now bombing its viewers with more movies and shows that come straight from the 2000s.
With all the excitement that old rom coms receive on the streaming now, no matter how bad they turned out to be back in the day, some big flops from the previous years have all chances to be brought to light once again. This week marks Netflix’s several new arrivals, including a 2006 fantasy rom com starring James McAvoy.
Some young viewers may not quite believe this, but McAvoy, now mostly renowned thanks to his pretty sinister roles in Split and It Chapter Two, was a big romantic back in the 2000s. The actor starred in the Keira Knightley-led war drama Atonement in 2007, but before that he got one of the main roles in a much more unserious comedy movie Penelope.

Period dramas have always been hot (repression so often is). Whether it’s Oliver Reed and Alan Bates nude wrestling in front of a roaring fire in “Women in Love” or Keira Knightley and James McCardle in the library with the green dress in “Atonement,” sex has always been there in period dramas. But something has happened in recent years in television: Shows set in ye olden times have gotten much, much hornier.
“Bridgerton” earned a lot of publicity for its frank sex scenes in Season 1, but it was hardly the first. There’s something about peeling back the bedclothes (and clothes) of a lost era that makes it resonate even more with modern audiences. If the stolen glances and hastily scrawled notes are foreplay, then we’re now living in a golden age of ruffled and furbelowed consummation.

Keira Knightley & James McAvoy Once Opened Up Their Atonement Love Scene. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Keira Knightley is one of those actresses who fits perfectly in a period film; her filmography is significant proof of that. She has given outstanding performances in her movies, and the actress selected one of her best intimate scenes on screen. It was with James McAvoy in their film, Atonement. But the X-Men: First Class actor had a different opinion about their passionate lovemaking scene.
The 2007 romance drama was based on Ian McEwan’s novel of the same name. It featured McAvoy and Knightley in lead roles. Saoirse Ronan played an integral part in the movie that was directed by Joe Wright. The film was nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Ronan. James McAvoy is rare among this new young breed of actors, as he has the ability to shift between offering heartbreaking sensitivity (“Atonement”) to displaying some serious action chops (“Atomic Blonde” and “Wanted”). The ability to toggle between these two attributes in such films as “The Last King of Scotland,” “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and as the young Professor X in several films in the “X-Men” series that has made him internationally one of the most in-demand actors in the world.
Not only is McAvoy versatile in the kind of projects he selects, but he delivers, having earned two BAFTA nominations for his performances in “The Last King of Scotland” and “Atonement,” and a Golden Globe nom for “Atonement” as well.
Let’s raise up a glass to that great Scot with our photo gallery, which ranks his 10 greatest film performances from worst to best.

Saoirse Ronan has spent much of her youth racking up Oscar nominations, scoring her first bid when she was 13 and her fourth when she was 25. Take a look back at 12 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Ronan’s parents were both actors and she was born in The Bronx, New York while her father was studying acting there and working odd jobs. Her parents returned to their native Ireland when Saoirse was three, where she developed her signature accent. She began acting herself at the age of 9 on a few different Irish television programs. Although she missed out on a role in the Harry Potter films, she bounced back with a key part in the 2007 Best Picture contender “Atonement,” which brought her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.
She earned three Best Actress nominations for three films that all competed in Best Picture: “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women...

Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Last week, the trades revealed details about “The Department,” a new espionage political thriller series based on the critically acclaimed hit French drama “Le Bureau des Legendes.” Michael Fassbender was cast in the lead role, and the series came from George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures shingle. While early reports said Clooney would direct, a new Paramount+ announcement revealed that he’s just executive producing the project and Golden Globe and multi-bafta winner Joe Wright will direct the series instead.

The films competing for the 2024 Best Production Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our odds currently indicate that “Barbie” (17/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Oppenheimer” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
After 1970 and 2004, this is only the third year in Oscars history that the same five movies are nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. The two present lineups differ, however, in that none of the former’s individual contenders are past winners, constituting the first such instance in the category since 2009. In that case, the only returning nominees were art director Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight”) and set decorator Gary Fettis (“Changeling”).
Leading this year’s production design hopefuls in terms of total career nominations are “Barbie” duo Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, who earned joint recognition for half a dozen earlier films.

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Her remaining two bids came for “Mr. Turner” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2018).

Paramount+’s spy thriller The Department is starting to fill out its ranks.
The drama series, based on the French hit Le Bureau des Legendes, has tapped Joe Wright (Atonement, 2005’s Pride & Prejudice) as director of the first two episodes and Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (Ford v. The series, which comes from Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, is aiming for a premiere date later this year on Paramount+ With Showtime.

At the time, George Clooney was announced as director, but he has ceded those duties to Wright. Keira Knightley’s slender frame, sharp features, and expressive eyes give her a stunning presence on screen. She carries herself with grace and poise, even in gritty roles.
She debuted in a major film when she was just 12 years old, playing Sabé in Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace (1999).

Actress Keira Knightley gained significant popularity in the 2000s and it’s hard to not talk about 2003’s Love Actually when we talk about her success. While the movie was very important for the actress’ career, Knightley has one regret: wearing a hat in a scene in the movie. It may have looked out of place but there was a particular reason why she wore it.

Knightley once revealed that she wore the hat in order to hide acne. It was natural for her as she was just a teenager back then, but she preferred the hat instead of makeup to cover the pimple. Love Actually made Knightley a household name and created bigger opportunities for the star.

Emerald Fennell is sharing her love of Gothic horror movies and twisted erotic thrillers courtesy of her favorite films list.
The “Promising Young Woman” Oscar winner and “Saltburn” director revealed her top movies, ranging from “The Shining” to “Cruel Intentions” and “Jurassic Park.” As Fennell told IndieWire, all modern films inherently draw from cinematic history, with her latest dark comedy “Saltburn” directly inspired by “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Rebecca,” and “Atonement.”
“Partly it’s that you can’t make a movie like this without it naturally kind of existing in that world. But the only thing that’s useful about that truly is the familiarity it gives the audience, because you can only really make something uncanny if somebody’s familiar with something,” Fennell said. “You are using those things carefully so that people think they know what they’re getting.”

By racking up three Best Actress Oscar notices between the ages of 26 and 32, previous teenage supporting nominee Jodie Foster proved it possible to earn academy recognition more than twice during adulthood after initially charming them as a child. Now, nearly three decades later, she has improved upon that distinction by landing her fifth career bid for “Nyad,” thus entering the Best Supporting Actress arena for the first time as an adult. Since her two featured bids are separated by 47 years, she now holds the record for longest span between consecutive Oscar nominations in a single acting category.
Foster, who first caught the academy’s attention at 14, belongs to the 18% minority of child nominees who went on to contend as adults. She was preceded in that regard by 17-year-old “Rebel Without a Cause” (1956) cast mates Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood and has only been followed by Saoirse Ronan, who competed for...

Louis Vuitton confirmed the four-time Oscar-nominated actress has joined as an ambassador on Tuesday. She joins other previously named ambassadors such as Zendaya, Stray Kids’ Felix and BTS’ J-Hope.
The 29-year-old’s latest feature, The Outrun, premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this month. Ronan, who attended the Park City premiere dressed in Louis Vuitton, served as a producer on the project, which was directed by Nora Fingscheidt and based on the memoir by Amy Liptrot.
In addition to her film work, Ronan recently joined Louis Vuitton women’s artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière as a guest at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles.

With “Barbie,” the nomination leader and the other half of Barbenheimer over on the comedy side, “Oppenheimer” is expected to emerge as the biggest drama winner at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The Christopher Nolan blockbuster is the odds-on favorite to prevail in four of its eight categories, including Best Drama Film. It’s also predicted to win Best Director for Nolan, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson.
Excluding “La La Land” (2016), which won all seven awards for which it was nominated, “Oppenheimer” would be just the seventh film this century to win four awards in a single night. In fact, no film during this timeframe besides “La La Land” has won more than four. The now-disbanded Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s penchant for spreading the wealth has meant that most films typically max out at three awards — “The Banshees of Inisherin...

If executed well, twist endings can result in a fun experience. Having the rug pulled out from under you in a way that sheds new light on the entire film can make you instantly want to watch the rest of the film again. Whether it's "The Usual Suspects," "Fight Club," or "The Sixth Sense," the twist sends a blast of dopamine through your brain that leaves you walking out of the theater on a dizzying high.
Rarer are the twist endings that leave you utterly bereft and devastated, where that hit of dopamine is replaced by crushing defeat. Attempting this kind of ending can be enormously precarious, as you introduce the distinct possibility of completely alienating your audience. Sometimes that's the point, like in Michael Haneke's "Funny Games," but more often than not, you are looking to give the viewers an emotionally cathartic ending that is in keeping with the narrative.

Gothic stories generally evoke the faded elegance of the Interwar years in “Atonement” and “Rebecca” or the dark forces hiding behind 19th-century exteriors in “Crimson Peak” or “Jane Eyre.” It’s quite another thing entirely to build a Gothic romance out of Pringles cans, LiveStrong bracelets, and other unfashionable debris of the ‘00s. But that’s what makes writer/director Emerald Fennell‘s “Saltburn” so startling: There’s never a risk of “Downton Abbey”-ifying the English country house at which Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) spends a golden summer holiday with his new Oxford bestie Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi).
Fennell captures the power and the grandeur of her characters’ desires (and the accompanying dangerously possessive obsession) while constantly roasting them, too. While the low-rise jeans and middle parts of the late ‘90s are making a return, nothing from 15 years ago is ever cool; the film’s music, costumes, set design,...

Savannah, Georgia is an appropriate setting for a conversation with filmmaker Emerald Fennell about her newest film “Saltburn,” which follows an Oxford student who becomes enmeshed with a wealthy classmate’s eccentric family during a summer at their country estate. “It’s fully Gothic, especially at Halloween, so it’s really my favorite kind of place,” said the director to IndieWire during a recent interview. Though, in an interview setting that featured walls that alternated between hard, slate gray panels, and thin, beaming bars of fluorescent lighting, Fennell joked that the whole thing felt a bit like “a ‘John Wick’ interrogation.”
In town to accept the Spotlight Director Award at the Scad Savannah Film Festival, Fennell denied feeling a daunting amount of pressure around what to follow up her Academy Award-winning debut “Promising Young Woman” with. “I usually have a few things going on, but I don’t write them down.

Christopher Hampton, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The Father” and “Dangerous Liaisons,” is set to adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography “Leonardo Da Vinci” for Universal Pictures.
Universal Pictures had fiercely chased rights to the hot literary property six years ago, and was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Now that Universal has finally secured those rights, it has tapped Hampton to pen the adaptation, which seems to be the perfect material for the Oscar winning writer whose movies typically lure A-list talent.
Hampton’s screenplays include “Atonement,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “A Dangerous Method” and more recently Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” which won two Oscars, for best adapted screenplay and actor (for Anthony Hopkins). Hampton has also been celebrated for his plays and musicals that have garnered two Tony Awards, an Olivier Award, and the New York Theatre Critics Circle Award.

Pop the cork and celebrate Haley Bennett in Widow Clicquot, a fast-paced and sexy biopic of the woman known as Madame “Veuve” Clicquot, or by her actual full name, Barbe Nicole Ponsardin-Clicquot, who triumphed over all odds to become the force that created and brought to the world the leading brand of champagne. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
Serving as a producer with her Cyrano director Joe Wright (along with Christina Weiss Lurie), and taking on the title role, Bennett anchors a plush and gorgeous period film set against the vineyards in France circa 1800, with a story that begins with Barbe Nicole at age 26, widowed by the sudden tragic death of her husband Francois Clicquot (Tom Sturridge) who, though manic and excitable, managed to build a dream of a vineyard and the creation of a new champagne and was joined by his wife and mother of their daughter in the quest.

Four-time Oscar nominee and indie darling Saoirse Ronan revealed in a recent Harper’s Bazaar UK interview that she’s keen to star in a comedy soon, referencing Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” and the Larry David-created sitcoms “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as her favorite comedic projects.
“I would love to do something modern and funny,” Ronan said. “But to be able to do comedy well requires so much skill and musicality. I don’t necessarily think I have that yet — although as I’ve got older, I am more comfortable and confident to try.”
Ronan is best known for her dramatic roles, and has earned Academy Award nominations for “Atonement,” in which she plays the petulant and jealous younger sister to Keira Knightley; “Brooklyn,” which follows a young Irish immigrant navigating life in 1950s New York; “Lady Bird,” in which she stars as a headstrong teenager at odds with her mother; and finally,...

Fantasy films are hard done by when it comes to earning acting nominations at the Oscars. “The Lord of the Rings,” which was an academy darling, of course, only garnered one nomination for its cast across all three movies. That was for Ian McKellen who reaped a Best Supporting Actor bid for the first film in the trilogy, “The Fellowship of the Ring.” The likes of Andy Serkis, Sean Astin and Elijah Wood were repeatedly snubbed.
Harry Potter is another of those fantasy film franchises that was short-changed at the Oscars for its acting despite a plethora of excellent performances from the cream of the British crop. Not to mention the central trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint who developed from child stars to fully-fledged thespians across the eight-film series. Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for its upcoming sci-fi thriller “Foe,” starring Paul Mescal and Saorise Ronan.
Based on the novel of the same name, the latest feature from director Garth Davis stars Mescal and Ronan as Junior and Henrietta, a husband and wife who live about 40 years in the future on a secluded farm. The couple is offered an unexpected proposition by a stranger named Terrance (Aaron Pierre), who proposes that Junior go to space for several years to assist in the piloting of a program that helps transition humanity away from living on the deteriorating Earth. This proposition also comes with a “Black Mirror”-esque twist involving a robot version of Junior staying and watching over Henrietta in his absence. Costuming can often serve as its own character in a film, and Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" was no different. Gerwig enlisted Academy Award-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran to bring her vision to life, which included brand-new, original designs as well as recreations of some of the most famous fashions of Mattel's prodigal daughter. Durran's previous films include beloved historical dramas like "Atonement," "Pride & Prejudice," "Little Women," and "Cyrano," but she's also the costumer behind Matt Reeves' "The Batman" and the stressful "Nosedive" episode of "Black Mirror." This is to say that while Durran's name isn't synonymous with bright, bold colors, no one should have ever doubted that Durran was going to deliver a masterful collection of magisterial designs.
During the production of "Barbie," the cast and crew had a rule that everyone would wear pink on Wednesdays (a reference to "Mean Girls"), further emphasizing the importance of the costumes and fashion on set.

The Oscars for design — Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling — are often awarded together to reward movies that have excelled in their costume creations, set building, and distinct makeup work. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won all three while “Black Panther” won both Costume Design and Production Design. Those two are fantasy films, which is a leading genre in the design categories. But period pictures, historical epics, sci-fi flicks, and even distinct contemporary films have also done well in these races.
With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of the eight films we expect to be the strongest contenders across the three categories.
“Barbie”
Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. The trailers have flaunted pretty pastels and plastics in both the sets and the costumes and the full film does not disappoint. The legendary Jacqueline Durran is in...

With the true crime TV movie “Boston Strangler,” Keira Knightley has made a welcome return to the genre she excels in — period dramas. The new Hulu telefilm chronicles the true story of Loretta McLaughlin, the reporter who connected the murders of the Boston Strangler and broke the story for Boston Record American.
The killer murdered 13 women in the 1960s and McLaughlin (Knightley) reported on the ongoing story alongside Jean Cole (Carrie Coon) while dealing with the sexism of the era at the same time. Utilizing an American accent, which Knightley doesn’t often do, the actress is a firm presence on screen and carries the TV movie on her shoulders. It’s her haunting facial expressions and dogged determinism as McLaughlin that propels the movie forward. Without Knightley’s cutting central performance, the movie might not have worked, as critics have noted.

Even for someone who has had a remarkable career, if part of that career includes "Star Wars" in any capacity, that will always be an immortal calling card. Period. Such is the case with Keira Knightley, the star of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Atonement," among many other big things. But Knightley's first, big break was starring a bit-part in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" as Sabe, one of the Royal Handmaidens of Naboo who was assigned to Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman). Despite the immortality of it all, Knightley has almost no memory of making the film. Almost.
Speaking to Total Film in 2020 (via GamesRadar), Knightley was reflecting on her impressive career and was asked about her time filming "The Phantom Menace." The film was a gigantic moment in pop culture history, bringing "Star Wars" back to the masses for a new generation after it had been away for the better part of two decades.

After a week of behind-the-scenes drama, it’s fantastic to know going into this first part of a two-part season six finale that S.W.A.T. isn’t going to end prematurely. CBS announced the series had been canceled, despite the ratings growing year-over-year, and then quickly reversed their decision after fans – and Shemar Moore – made their displeasure known. The network confirmed there will be a shortened season seven. (Read all about it here).
