The Sega Master system version of Castlevania.
While the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive) would get a Castlevania game (and a very good one at that), there was not one for the Sega Master system. So, they made a game that is very similar to the Castlevania games on the NES. While this one is definitely not as good as the Castlevania games, it was an okay game that was rather fun. Just expect a bit more from a game released in 1992 whether it was on an 8-bit system or not. This thing looks on par, maybe a bit less graphically pleasing than the Castlevania games for the NES and they were all older than this game! It makes no sense seeing as how the Master System generally was a better system power wise than the NES, but they failed to really do a bang up job with this one so a really cool game is just an okay one.
The story has a psychologist who is playing with a ouji board and gets a message to go to the Thames river. He does so and must battle Jack the Ripper before making his way to a wax museum. Seems someone is dabbling in the dark arts and so Dracula has risen yet again. Only, it really isn't Dracula, more like some wizard guy has Dracula's powers. Can a psychologist battle Dracula and his hoards of the undead or will evil prevail!?!
The game play is very much like Castlevania as the level design has those stairs that look to have been directly ripped from a game of the Konami series. You proceed through stages that usually consist of three levels and then battle a boss at the end of the third level with the exception of the fifth stage which only has one level. You fight using various weapons, as you have a primary weapon which starts out as a knife and a secondary weapon such as a gun, bomb, boomerang or stake. An axe is the most powerful weapon you can obtain and none of these weapons are as cool as their Castlevania counterparts.
So, it was pretty fun; however, they could have done a better job and made this one more appealing. My guess, is that this one was designed for the Game Gear which was a handheld gaming device and it was not quite as powerful as the Master System and just ported over to the console which was on its way out as the Genesis had already taken its place as Sega's primary piece of hardware three years prior. Seems a lot of the games at the end were simply ports of games that were designed for the Game Gear. Overall, though it was an okay game, if they had just made the stages have a bit more flair visually it may have been a classic, as it is, just a knock off of a superior game.
