In a recent interview with Febri, renowned anime director Hiroyuki Imaishi talked about why he believes it would be impossible to recreate an anime like Kill La Kill today.
Reflecting on a recent screening event where he revisited past episodes, Imaishi revealed that he was struck by the realization that recreating the magic of Kill La Kill would be nearly impossible today.
Imaishi explained that this feeling wasn’t new and surfaced with every project he undertook, but it was especially pronounced in this instance. He emphasized that Kill La Kill was a product of its time, achievable only under the specific conditions and creative environment that existed back then.
Moreover, the production of Kill La Kill didn’t involve much of a planning (even if it was more than what was done during the making of his earlier work Gurren Lagann) and Studio Trigger didn’t have the resources...

Since 2007, the "Transformers" movies have been A) Primarily set on Earth (excepting prologues in "Dark of the Moon" and "Bumblebee" showing the war for planet Cybertron) and B) Live-action, using CGI to integrate the Autobots and Decepticons into real settings. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") is about to change that with "Transformers One." /Film's Ryan Scott, who attended the Paramount Pictures panel at CinemaCon 2024, got an early look at the upcoming animated movie.
"Transformers One" is a prequel set before the war when the Autobots and Decepticons were still one people. Since the movie is set entirely on Cybertron with only robot characters, it makes sense to tell the story through animation. "Transformers" is no stranger to prequels -- check out the comic series "The War Within," High Moon Studios' video game duology "War for Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron," and more. Still, this is new territory for the films.

Whether it is watching episodes, reading chapters, or quietly crying thinking about Gurren Lagann , he is a superfan of both anime and metal. We had the chance to talk with him a little bit about what makes him love it all so much. Tell us a little bit about where you are in your anime fandom. Nathan : So I used to build Gundam models. I have like 100 of them in my closet because for a while it was all I did. I have them all. They're all built. But it was so not healthy for me because I couldn’t stop. Get ready, because we're going back to Pandora! Well, at least the cast is, because Sam Worthington confirmed in an interview with People Magazine that the next "Avatar" movie will go back to shooting soon.
"We go back to work on it in a month and it's big," Worthington said of "Avatar 3," which is thankfuly not officially titled "The Seed Bearer." Worthington added: "It's bigger than you can imagine."
It is common for actors to say things like "it's bigger than you can imagine" or that a sequel is "bigger than the first," but if there's a franchise where this is something worth paying attention to and believing in, it's James Cameron's "Avatar." The first movie brought on a 3D revolution on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie ever. Star Wars has always pulled influences from many places, including old serials, "Dune," and several of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's films. Because of this, Star Wars is both a specific vision and also a world that is recognizable everywhere. In more recent years, anime has deeply impacted the franchise far, far away and taken it towards new heights.
Whether it's "The Clone Wars" or even "Star Wars: Visions," the franchise has looked towards Japanese anime for aesthetic inspiration. But it wasn't until this year that we finally got a canonical display of one of the biggest and most iconic aspects of anime: mecha suits.
In the latest episode of "The Mandalorian," we finally see someone realize that Grogu can't just stay seated in his little stroller all day long -- particularly not during big battles. He needs mobility and a fighting chance beyond his force abilities, so what do...

"Rocky" is one of the most iconic franchises of all time, one that captured the change in Hollywood from the rise of independent dramas of the '70s into the bombastic action films of the '80s. Yet the franchise started losing popularity, never capable of recapturing the awards praise of the original film or the commercial success of "Rocky IV."
Which makes the "Creed" movies kind of a miracle. The first "Creed" is a rare legasequel that actually works, a film that takes what made the first "Rocky" movie special but adds something new while paying off the past. It felt both fresh and familiar. Now in its third installment, Michael B. Voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch is going back to his roots. In a tweet from Crunchyroll, the voice actor confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Vash the Stampede in the soon-to-come English dub of "Trigun: Stampede." Said dub will be arriving on January 21, 2023, a mere two weeks after the premiere of "Stampede" this past January 7.
Yong Bosch is a prolific voice actor and Vash in the original "Trigun" anime was his very first voice-over role. He'd acted before, most famously as Adam Park (the second Black Ranger) in "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers." However, during an Adr session, a producer decided he had a "hero's voice" and asked him to audition for animated roles. A few weeks later, he was voicing Vash. Rejoice, "Evangelion" fans of America, for you finally have a chance to see the saga's conclusion in a theater. "Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon A Time" had a (very successful) theatrical run in its native Japan, but international audiences had to settle for a Prime Video release in August 2021. GKids has since acquired the North American distribution rights and has partnered with Fathom Events for theatrical exhibitions. After a one-night IMAX screening on November 30th, the film is playing during the week of December 6 in theaters across the U.S. These showings will exclusively show the subbed version of the film: Japanese audio, English subtitles. If you prefer your anime dubbed, you're out of luck.

Seemingly every site on the internet has written a "Top Anime Betrayals" article. It has its own meme and everything. Obviously, we're no better, but it makes sense that people keep coming back to the subject. "Betrayal" covers a lot of ground. Depending on the writer's frame of reference and what hits them, personally, in the guts, there are a huge number of ways to approach the subject. Which characters are you the most emotionally invested in? Which show did you see at a formative age? Have you watched much anime beyond big-budget Shonen Jump adaptations?
So, let's give up on finding the one true list; in the end, this sort of thing is subjective anyway. Instead, we present you with 13 gut-punching betrayals that changed the way we looked at these stories, reshaped the courses of their respective narratives, or affected other titles for years to come. "House of the Dragon" is quickly becoming the best George R. R. Martin adaptation yet, a show that embraces the best parts of "Game of Thrones" but does away with what didn't work there. Sure, we may lack some of the sense of urgency from "Game of Thrones" and its catchy "Winter Is Coming" tagline, but by taking what is essentially just a history book and filling in the gaps of the story, we're getting a faithful-yet-surprising and poignant-yet-entertaining tragedy about the fall of a family due to very stupid choices.
But the show is not all violence, boobs, and funerals. "House of the Dragon" is also unafraid to be outright weird. After all, this is the show that gave us the gift that was Craghas Drahar, aka the Crabfeeder (rest in peace, king) and his army of crabs that ate people. "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is an animated spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077," a blockbuster sci-fi dystopian video game that itself was made in a pretty dystopian manner. It's also the newest show by Hiroyuki Imaishi, the director of "Gurren Lagann" and "Promare."
Imaishi started as an animator and director at the legendary studio Gainax before co-founding Studio Trigger with fellow Gainax staff including Yoh Yoshinari. His work features bombastic action, rude humor, and enough lens flares to give J.J. Abrams a headache. Imaishi's work is popular among international fans, some of whom were inspired to become animators themselves. Others argue that Imaishi's descendants, such as Yoshimichi Kameda and Imaishi's protege Akira Amemiya, have long surpassed him as animator and director respectively. Even so, "Edgerunners" holds its own in what is set to be a very busy fall for the anime industry.
Imaishi crams his animated works with references to shows, movies and comics he likes.

Audio elements and sound design, especially the score, are as fundamental to animation as the visuals. The proper use of music at the right time can make the action soar and it’s genuinely exciting that more experimental and passionate creators are embracing the sonic possibilities that television allows. The duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, along with Studio Trigger seem to produce only masterpieces, since their three works include “Gurren Lagann“, “Promare” and the present title.
The story takes place in Honnouji Academy, a high school in Tokyo Bay, where Satsuki Kiryuin is the head of a rather powerful council governing over hundreds of students. Just below her are the “Four Devas”, a quartet of also quite strong students, who are dedicated to her, despite having their own agendas, on occasion. What is the unique thing about Honnouji, however, is that the students are wearing Goku Uniforms, special suits created from a material known as Life Fibers, which are bestowed to them based on their skills and accomplishments. Furthermore, the better suit a student wears, the better situated in the area is his/her family, in a society that is rather segregated.

Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

I’ve long had a soft spot for stories that transplant Batman to different times. The best is probably Gotham By Gaslight, which imagines a Victorian Batman tangling with Jack the Ripper, but I also have a huge soft spot for Grant Morrison’s time-hopping miniseries Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, in which we see Caveman Batman, Witchhunter Batman, Pirate Batman, Cowboy Batman and 30s Gumshoe Batman. So, I’m naturally over the moon with this new trailer for Batman Ninja.
First announced at the New York Comic-Con, the project is the brainchild of DC and a number of anime and manga superstars. Namely, Junpei Mizusaki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), Takashi Okazashi (Afro Samurai), and Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann).
From what I can tell from the trailer, the movie opens with Batman and the Joker engaged in a typically tense battle to the death, only to find themselves hurled back to medieval Japan.

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
In the year 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for mankind’s survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by Nerv, a special United Nations agency. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can dish out, the Evangelions’ one drawback lies in the limited number of people able to pilot them. Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared, are able to interface with an Evangelion.
One such teenager is Ikari Shinji, whose father heads the Nerv team that developed and maintains the Evangelions. Thrust into a maelstrom of battles and events that he does not understand, Shinji is forced to plumb the depths of his own inner resources for the courage and strength to not only fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything.

So, you want to start watching anime but have no idea where to begin? That’s understandable. After all, anime isn’t a genre, it’s a medium in its own right, complete with different styles, sub-genres and target audiences.
Honestly, it can be pretty intimidating trying to find something that’s right for you, or even knowing where to begin your search. The sheer scope and variety of anime can be nothing short of daunting for anyone who hasn’t already taken the dive.
Death Note and Hamtaro couldn’t be more different; neither could Gurren Lagann and Attack on Titan, or Fullmetal Alchemist and Mobile Suit Gundam. It’s a complex world; a beautiful and bizarre one that will fully reward its viewership, but it can be a little jarring for newbies.
There’s no shame whatsoever in finding yourself a little lost. If anime has...

News first surfaced on an anime adaptation of One-Punch Man earlier this month with a second report stating that it would premiere later this year in October. Now, we have details on the anime studio and staff that will be working on the project. Madhouse, the studio behind great anime series such as Hunter x Hunter and Batman: Gotham Knight among others, is the Japanese animation studio shepherding the project. Director Shingo Natsume (Space Dandy) will be directing the series while Chikashi Kubota (Gurren Lagann, Space Dandy) will design the characters. One-Punch Man is a manga series written by One with art from Yuusuke Murata that revolves around the titular hero, Saitama and his everyday life as a superhero. In his quest to become strong, Saitama trained to such an extent that he can defeat any enemy with just one punch. The drawback to having such power is that Saitama...

Scottish distributor Anime Ltd. impressed people with their announced releases this year, of several titles new and old, movies and series. Now that we finally see those releases roll out, it's time to be impressed again. Last month we saw an Ultimate Edition of Gurren Lagann arrive (we wrote a similar article about it here), and this month we get the newest series by the same director: Imaishi Hiroyuki's Kill La Kill. In a rather bold move, Anime Ltd. releases Kill La Kill a mere seven months after its original Japanese broadcast ended. This means the license is still hot and expensive, and Anime Ltd. has to release it above a certain price point, far above what other distributors in the UK have often dismissed...

Sailor Moon is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new series called Sailor Moon Crystal. The series is getting a 26 episode run. Last month we reported that starting July 5th the show will be streamed the first and third Saturdays worldwide on Nico Nico Douga. No footage has emerged just yet, but we do have details on the voice cast and some cool art that shows off the character designs.

Kiddy Grade is an oddly named 24-episode science fiction anime series created by gimik and Gonzo Digimation in 2002. It was directed by a third of gimik – Keiji Gotoh, who’s list of animation credits is as long as your arm, but includes such gems as Read or Die and Afro Samurai: Resurrection. The series found an American audience via FUNimation Entertainment, and was later re-released in 2007 on the big screen in Japan as three movies (Ignition, Maelstrom and Truth Dawn).
Kiddy Grade is set in a future where the human race inhabits many other planets in a universe where the Galactic Organization of Trade and Tariffs (Gott) are the Galactic Union police force. The protagonists of this anime are Éclair and Lumière, an Es team from the secret branch of the Gott known as the “Shadow Unit”, a group of superpowered elite enforcers.

It’s another jam-packed week of DVD and Blu-ray releases, here’s the rundown of what’s available to buy from today, June 27th 2011.

Once in a great while a groundbreaking work of art reveals itself, each often revolutionizing the way art is interpreted.
It can come in a variety of different forms, such as Di Vinci’s Mona Lisa or Van Gogh’s Starry Night, to Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby or Orwell’s 1984, to even Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion. We can easily agree that all of these are very unique to one another in their own right, yet all are great pieces of art expressing ideas and emotions beyond belief. Artists aren’t afraid to cross lines or push boundaries for the sake of their work, and they must throw larger stones to make bigger splashes. Sometimes brilliance comes from very unexpected places. In 2010, a new masterpiece was unveiled in the form of a gag anime by the name of Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt.

Sym-bionic Titan: Episode One
Guest Review by Baron Fortnightly
Stars (the voices of): Kevin Thorns, Brian Posehin, Tara Strong, John Dimaggio | Created by Genndy Tartakovsky, Paul Rudish, Bryan Andrews
Sym-Bionic Titan is the latest Cartoon Network show from the mind of creator Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, and the first Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoons.
The plot is very old school Japanese anime, with Princess Ilana (Strong) being sent by her father to hide on Earth after their home planet of Galaluna is conquered. Her only companions are her surly bodyguard Lance (Kevin Thorns), and her bio-cybernetic robot Octus (Posehin).
Not only do they have to blend in at high school to keep hidden from America’s military and a very Kamen Rider looking mysterious government agency who spotted their crash landing and took their craft, but they must also face...

For some reason, the future always seems to be a few decades away. 1984 was published in 1949. Terminator, which appropriately enough was released in 1984, set 1997 as the date for the apocalyptic “Judgement Day.” It seems strange now, after the turn of the Millennium (which happened rather uneventfully, with little more than an endless repeat of an old Prince song to mark its passing) to look back on things like Mad Max, Y2K, or the still older imaginings of such retro science fiction classics as Fahrenheit 451 or Soylent Green, but for decades, sci-fi imagineers alternated between the chills of gloom and doom and utopian fever.

In the world of giant mecha and space opera, it’s hard to find anything genuinely new. The genre is so defined, there are few trails left to blaze, and so a new series will most likely develop along one of two routes: it can either ride the coat tails an already established franchise, and present itself as a sequel/prequel/reversioning (the new — and Excellent — Evangelion titles are great example of this), or a show can strive to be a parody, preferably a really Good one, such as Galaxy Angel or Martian Successor Nadesico.
Vandread is in this latter category, and it doesn’t take long (approximately five seconds) to find out that this is space mecha action with a twist — forget aliens or angels, this is boys vs. girls! Men are from Mars, and Women are from Venus, but after decades in deep space, the two don’t...

Some more, very good news for this years’ Animotion film festival that takes place during the AnimagiC anime con in Bonn, Germany from July 31 to August 2.
After the announcement that the second film of the Rebuild of Evangelion series: Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance will be shown just one month after the Japanese theatrical premiere, it has now been reported that the Eureka Seven movie Pocket Full of Rainbows (Trailer) and both Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann compilation movies (Guren-hen & Ragan-hen) will also be screened. And to ecstasize my international visitors as well: All four films will be shown with English subtitles!
Pocket Full of Rainbows and Ragan-hen just opened last weekend in Japan, so I think the Animotion team deserves some extra credit for their effort!
