“Minari,” the acclaimed drama that won top prizes at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, is a memory piece based on director Lee Isaac Chung’s own childhood. Starring Steven Yeun and Yeri Han as Jacob and Monica, the parents of a Korean-American family in 1980s Arkansas, the film is a tough, poetic capture of life, told with an absence of narration or obvious lesson-learning.
Among the film’s many unique qualities is its beautifully woven and imaginative musical score by fast-emerging composer Emile Mosseri. Two tracks from the soundtrack can be listened to below. Mosseri, who’s a member of the band The Dig and looks a bit like 1970s-era Lou Reed, was greatly moved by reading Chung’s screenplay and meeting with the filmmaker. “The movie is both specific to Korean American experience in the ’80s,” Mosseri told TheWrap, “but it’s also a very universal, poignant, intimate film about family.

The Golden Globe Awards love them some Amazon comedies, which bodes well for “Truth Seekers,” the new series from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg about a team of part-time paranormal investigators. Rotten Tomatoes says in its critics consensus that “‘Truth Seekers’ is genuinely eerie, balancing out its silly sensibilities with creeping terror and a scary talented cast.”
Amazon has won four of the last six Best Comedy/Musical Series trophies: “Fleabag” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” triumphed as they did at the Emmys, but the streaming service had previously won the Best Comedy Series Globes for “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Transparent.” “Mozart in the Jungle” also took Best Comedy/Musical Actor for Gael Garcia Bernal, but neither he nor the show itself were ever nominated at the Emmys. Globe voters further demonstrated their affinity for Amazon three years ago by nominating Kevin Bacon in Best Comedy Actor for “I Love Dick,...

When most of us love something – a film, a band, a football team – we express that love by wearing the t-shirt or getting a tattoo. When Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and their mates love something, they express it by making a feature film trilogy. Or a cult 90s TV series. Or eight-part comedy-horror Truth Seekers.
Truth Seekers, co-created by Frost, Pegg, Nat Saunders and James Serafinowicz, is the product of fandom. It’s a bundle of admiration for horror in all guises, from the shonky DIY of Most Haunted to cultivated glitch and found-footage movie scares, to the recently revived anthology tradition. It has a go at recreating it all, tipping its hat so often that it can’t quite juggle the rest of its ambitions because its hand is already too full of hat.

One of Kevin James’ most beloved films is all set to hit Netflix next month. Everyone’s favorite mustached patrolman will ride his Segway straight into many people’s homes when Paul Blart: Mall Cop rolls onto the streaming service in just a couple of weeks, on November 1st.
The delightfully silly comedy centers around a goofy security guard in West Orange, New Jersey who dreams of one day becoming a real police officer. When a gang of bandits take several people hostage while they attempt to rob the shopping center that he’s stationed at, it’s all up to the titular character to save the day and rescue his cute coworker before it’s too late.
Though the flick was panned by critics upon its initial release back in 2009, it still managed to become a box office sensation and grossed an impressive $183.3 million against a $26 million budget. Those...

Brandon Cronenberg has proven to be an heir to his father, David, with his grisly sophomore feature, “Possessor Uncut,” which took home best film and director at Spain’s 53rd Sitges Film Festival on Saturday.
Running Oct.8-18, the fantastic film fest, Europe’s biggest, wrapped yesterday in Sitges, a picturesque seaside resort just south of Barcelona.
With these new honors, Brandon Cronenberg also suggests that his best new director award at 2012’s Sitges for debut feature, “Antiviral,” was no fluke.
A sci fi-horror hybrid, “Possessor Uncut” tracks an elite corporate assassin who uses brain-implant technology to take possession of other people’s bodies and slay prominent targets. The film first premiered at Sundance where Variety’s Peter Debruge described it as a “brilliant sci-fi puzzle” that was “more than just another bracingly extreme psychological thriller.”

‘Truth Seekers': Simon Pegg and Nick Frost Reunite to Fight ‘Ancient Magic’ in First Trailer (Video)
We were already sold on “Truth Seekers” when it was announced last year — reuniting Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on television for the first time since “Spaced” ended is all you had to say. But now we finally have a closer look at the upcoming Amazon Prime comedy and we can safely say we were right to be fully aboard sight unseen.
The first trailer dropped on Thursday during the show’s Comic-Con@Home panel, which featured series creators and writers Frost, Pegg, Nat Saunders, and James Serafinowicz. Watch it above now.
The eight-episode supernatural comedy stars Frost and Pegg alongside Samson Kayo, Emma D’Arcy, Susan Wokoma and the great Malcolm McDowell and focuses on a team of paranormal investigators who stumble on a vast conspiracy with apocalyptic implications. It’s familiar territory for Pegg and Frost, who in addition to “Spaced” starred together in a string of hit comedies...

As we wade deeper into the uncertain waters of isolated living, the list of movies and TV shows you haven’t seen already may be starting to dwindle. But fear not, quarantine content consumers — HBO is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in May, and there are lots of fresh options to keep you entertained this month.
Popular movies like “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Jaws” and “School of Rock” are all arriving Friday, May 1. Plus, the director’s cut of “Little Shop of Horrors,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “The Art of Getting By,” to name a few.
TV shows arriving throughout the month include the premiere of limited series “I Know This Much Is True” starring Mark Ruffalo, out May 10, and the season finale of HBO’s dark comedy “Run” starring Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson, out May 24.

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

It was on March 30, 1988 when Tim Burton unleashed one of his most wacky, vibrant and endearing original films on audiences everywhere, the madcap supernatural comedy Beetlejuice which firmly established Burton as one of the most forward-thinking visual storytellers of his, or any generation. While the film might have initially been birthed inside co-writer Michael McDowell’s imagination, Burton relied on an array of talents and artisans to help him bring his vision to life throughout production.
On the effects side of things, there were a handful of extremely talented artists assembled to work on Beetlejuice who were tasked with creating not only the titular character, but all kinds of off-the-wall creatures and entities that made the film a standout amongst its peers that year at the Academy Awards ceremony.

Earlier this month, Paul Simon helped launch a new music education program in New York City with a $1 million donation that will fund a fellowship for middle and high school music teachers over two years.
Each year, the Paul Simon Music Fellows Program will partner 20 young music educators across the five boroughs of New York City with veteran teachers, who will provide mentorship and skills training over the course of a school year. Additionally, the program will help bring new “artists-in-residence” to schools across the city for 11 weeks at a time.

The strangely contracted award season continues to impact the weekly circuit of award shows, as the weekend before the Oscar telecast includes both Saturday’s always lengthy WGA Awards as well as Sunday’s BAFTAs. This sent most of the BAFTA nominees to the WGA Awards in New York en route to London.
This forced the WGA to announce both narrative film awards early in the evening, as “Jojo Rabbit” auteur Taika Waititi beat out Steve Zaillian for “The Irishman” as well as “Little Women” writer-director Greta Gerwig for Adapted Screenplay. Her partner, Noah Baumbach, also went home empty-handed for his Original Screenplay “Marriage Story,” losing to “Parasite.”

In its ongoing attempts to revive dormant franchises, Sony can mark “Bad Boys for Life” as a big success. Industry estimates show that the return of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Mike and Marcus has brought moviegoers out to theaters to the tune of a $69 million 4-day opening, second only to “American Sniper” in the history of openings on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
While the previous two “Bad Boys” films, both directed by Michael Bay, were hits with audiences but panned by critics, “Bad Boys for Life” has done well with both. Along with an A on CinemaScore and a 5/5 on Postrak from hardcore fans, critics have given the film 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, praising the direction of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and the story’s acknowledgement that its two protagonists are no longer the young guns they once were.

With a whole new year about to be upon us, and as such, there’s a ton of new films to anticipate. Fun times, right? Today will be a day to look forward, which is a little different than most are doing here in the final days of December, when looking back is all the rage. Indeed, there’s a whole slate of titles emerging in the weeks and months to come, so that’s what we’ll be focusing on. Even just in the coming days, we’ll see 2020 releases begin to overtake the current 2019 expansions. Rian Johnson
“Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!!!”

Perhaps you're familiar with the poster art of Olly Moss, who creates custom posters for movie screenings at The Alamo Drafthouse cinemas in Austin, Texas (in my opinion, the best movie-viewing experience in the States). We're excited to give you the first look at Moss's poster for Source Code, which makes its world premiere at SXSW on March 11. Nowadays, as trailers and posters tend to reveal vital plot details, revel in these shades of turquoise, blush, and graphite and cross your fingers for Jake Gyllenhaal as he heads back in time. We also have the a new poster Moss created for Moon as part of SXSW's Director Series honoring Duncan Jones (the second filmmaker to receive the honor, after Guillermo del Toro), and artist Tom Whalen's poster for Paul, which makes its U.S. debut at SXSW on March 13. While those of you in the U.K. are already enjoying the latest from Greg Mottola, the alien road trip comedy "Paul," those of us on this side of Atlantic are patiently waiting for the film, and we continued to be teased with yet another trailer, this time a red-band version that offers up some new footage we haven't seen yet. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost lead a top-notch cast that includes Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Sigourney Weaver, Jeffrey Tambor, Joe Lo Truglio and Bill Hader in a story that follows two Brit sci-fi geeks (Pegg and…...

What do we learn about alien Paul (Seth Rogen) in the March 18 film’s new red band trailer? Well, he’s “kinda rude,” according to Kristen Wiig’s character, he (naturally) enjoys Reese’s Pieces, and earthlings are oddly fixated on his “spaceman balls.” Seriously, Paul’s groin gets not one, not two, but three mentions in the trailer — and, since I’m a 13-year-old boy, I’ll admit I giggled. Paul could be a film, like Rogen’s Pineapple Express, that benefits from a promising red band trailer — the sheer silliness of Paul’s plot is bolstered by some R-rated gags.

Black Swan extended its impressive foreign run with another first place finish this weekend, trumping chart regulars The King's Speech and Tangled. Paramount movies No Strings Attached and True Grit had their highest-grossing weekends so far, though their respective genres held them back a bit. Paul got off to a strong start in the United Kingdom thanks at least in part to the presence of popular British actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Darren Aronofsky's ballet thriller netted another $17.6 million from 39 markets for an foreign total of $97.9 million. It opened in first place in Spain with $2.9 million and had a solid $1.5 million launch in Italy. Black Swan also dipped just 18 percent to $4.1 million in star Vincent Cassel's native France, and held the top spot in Paris and the surrounding suburbs according to distributor 20th Century Fox. On Monday, the movie passed $200 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign). The King's Speech...

Aliens: cute or evil? Filmmakers have long bounced between the extraterrestrial tropes, giving us E.T.-style aliens who tug at heartstrings and Ridley Scott-esque aliens who eat heartstrings. But the trailer for upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul, directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland), about a pair of comic book aficionados on a successful expedition to Area 51, promises to fill the void between. Meet Paul, the regular guy alien.
Yes, Paul has an American accent, likes bagels, can show you the universe by touching your forehead. And also – he’s hilarious! The trailer doesn’t provide an overwhelming argument...

A leaked version of this appeared online last week, but now here's a better look at the Paul one-sheet "spotlight" poster. Here's your chance to glory in Nick Frost and Simon Pegg's haircuts for the film, and get to know Seth Rogen's little grey man.The plot, as many of you will know by now, sees Pegg and Frost star as Graeme and Clive, two British geeks on a road trip across the Us. No great stretch, you might think - until they meet an alien and their troubles really begin. It has an all-star comedy cast, with Jason Bateman, Jane Lynch, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jeffrey Tambor, David Koechner, Joe Lo Truglio and more onboard. The finished film is due out here on February 14 (presumably Frost and Pegg's way of celebrating their long bromance) and in the Us on March 18.

As those of you who've had the chance to read the hot-off-the-press latest issue of Empire will agree, the new shots of Paul look, well, out of this world. And though we can't bring you the exclusive snaps themselves (well, not yet, anyway) we can reveal a few choice snippets from our on-set interview with Messrs. Pegg and Frost."If people don't forget that Paul is a CG character within ten minutes of meeting him," says Frost, "we've done something wrong. He should not be anything special. He should be one of the gang."Pegg continues: "There are bits of dialogue where he just talks and does a lot of theorising about religion and sexuality and he swears a lot," says Pegg. "We've not seen a CG character do that before."And, as the interview continues, what Paul proportedly does when talking about the possibility that Simon and Nick's characters...

If you haven't already seen it during your cinema-going exploits this week, then you'll be delighted to know that the teaser trailer for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (and Greg Mottola's) sci-fi comedy, Paul, is now online over at MSN Movies. And what can we say? The movie, in which Pegg and Frost play a couple of British geeks on a road trip across the States who pick up an unwanted alien hitch-hiker, looks like a bundle of nerd-savvy fun, with plenty of Pegg-Frost chemistry, a raft of cracking lines and an all-star cast, from Jason Bateman to Sigourney Weaver to Jane Lynch to Kristen Wiig. And, in the film's eponymous CG alien (voiced by Seth Rogen), there's a feisty, foul-mouthed presence which should play well off the established Pegg-Frost axis. And the effects, by British-based FX house, Double Negative, look excellent. To see the trailer in HD, go to MSN Movies.

Ah, social media. Sometimes news spreads before the facts are aligned.
The “stabbing in Hall H” after the Resident Evil: Afterlife panel, which caused a delay before Universal’s Cowboys & Aliens/Paul presentation, might turn out to be a scuffle between two friends that wound up with one of the men going to the hospital with a “scratch” over his eye.
We’ll keep our eye on the developments; in the meantime, remember: pens are for writing, not stabbing.

Panels were delayed temporarily as police began their investigation and the scene of the altercation was cleaned up. Police continued their questioning of witnesses as the Cowboys & Aliens/Paul presentation began.

Simon Pegg announced on his MySpace page that Director Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) will direct Nick Frost and Pegg’s new movie, Paul. This will be the first film the two will star in that isn’t directed by friend and director Edgar Wright. Written by Pegg and Frost, Paul is about two British comic book geeks that get into an adventure across America. “Friends” Actor David Schwimmer was originally set to direct the flick. In addition to this news, Pegg says that he won’t be able to star in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film Inglorious Bastards as was previously reported. “Much to our mutual disappointment, I won’t be appearing in Qt’s forthcoming ‘Inglorious Bastards’ due to insurmountable scheduling difficulties,” he said. “We really tried [...]...
