As a past writer of both Wonder Woman and Red Sonja comics, Gail Simone is well versed in both superhero storytelling and pulp fantasy, making her a great choice to pen the first meeting of Wonder Woman and Conan the Barbarian. Wonder Woman/Conan The Barbarian is a new six-issue miniseries from DC Comics and Dark…

Things are just a little bit chaotic in the DC Extended Universe right now, as multiple projects have been announced and updated regarding spin-offs set in the comic book world — including a few that may involve iconic Batman villain The Joker. Unfortunately, the brass at Warner Bros is missing one opportunity that could make for one of DC’s most innovative experiences yet.

The psychopathic supervillain Joker has, of course, been a character of fascination for decades, as seen most recently on screen in “Suicide Squad,” where Jared Leto’s portrayal was paired with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s partner in life and crime. But as more than one person on Twitter has pointed out, DC may be overlooking a spinoff idea that could be the very best version of a...

The past few weeks I’ve been talking a lot about other people’s Kickstarter campaigns. This week, here at ComicMix, I’m here to talk about our Kickstarter campaign that is active right now. That’s right; ComicMix LLC is working on a new project – a major comics collection to benefit Planned Parenthood.
I’m going to get into that in a minute.
This project has been in the works for nearly two years now. It started back in December of 2015. Fellow ComicMix columnist and my co-editor Molly Jackson and I were at Mia Pizza in Astoria NY. I was a mere two months into my tenure as a columnist here and we were discussing something we could do. We immediately thought of doing a comics anthology. We had a lot of ideas we were throwing around, including a throwback Crime Does Not Pay style anthology.
Eventually, Molly and...

Bored with massive films and special effects? Then here are 10 smaller movies well worth your consideration...
It's that time of year when we usually give you a list of films playing in cinemas during August, as the summer blockbuster season winds down, that will help cleanse your palate after all the tentpoles and sequels that have proliferated throughout the year so far. But to be honest, this summer has been so good to us, we're more refreshed than usual.
Even aside from originals like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, this year's blockbusters have been of an unusually high standard. Wonder Woman pulled the Dceu out of its critical nosedive, War For The Planet Of The Apes is a gorgeous and emotional conclusion to the reboot trilogy, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming proved that Marvel's ever expanding continuity is still going strong.

As we creep along to the midway point of Summer, this can only mean one thing at the multiplex (aside from added matinees): another installment of a big studio franchise (formerly a series) will be occupying several screens. We’ve already had a new Alien, and another Depp pirate pic as the Planet Apes and Transformers wait in the wings, along with that wall-crawling wonder. I suppose we’re due for an animated sequel, but this one’s from the most celebrated studio of the last couple of decades, Pixar. Aside from Toy Story, they avoided follow-ups to their other hit films until 2011 when the Cars gang refueled for Cars 2. Then one of the other hits got a prequel, Monster University, and another spawned last year’s box office smash, Finding Dory. Now here’s the automotive, track-burnin’ “hat trick” as good ole’ number 95, Lightning McQueen roars back...

The Guardians of the Galaxy films are famous for incorporating classic tracks into the films' scenes and narrative -- nothing beats watching Kurt Russell talk his way through 'Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)' by Looking Glass. James Gunn is not the only director who very carefully considers every track, writes to the music he has picked, and seamlessly weaves it into his films. Edgar Wright has been obsessed with his musical choices since his TV show Spaced, with the following soundtracks for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World all including some pretty deep cuts that make for fine listening, long after you've seen the film.
Baby Driver is Wright's next film, and the latest trailer not only included 'Tequila' by The Champs, but was also titled "Official TeKillYah Trailer" to put further emphasis on the music. The trailer also sports...

What a great time to be a grandparent (or so I’m told). There are now plenty of books, games, clothing, and video to encourage girls to be strong and independent. DC Comics offers up their Super Hero Girls line and this week they have released their second animated feature, DC Super Hero Girls: Intergalactic Games, a 77-minute romp.
Writer Shea Fontana improves on the first offering with a story set at the Intergalactic Games where Earth’s powered women take on the vile challengers from Korugar Academy. To prepare for the competition Academy teacher Doc Magnus (Phil Lamarr) is building battlebots and supervising Batgirl (Mae Whitman) and Bumblebee (Teala Dunn) as they build their own. Principal Waller (Yvette Nicole Brown) is not amused nor is she happy that Magnus’ bots seem to have free will but were not programmed with any morality, a theme that plays out across the 77-minute fast-paced story.

Rosario Dawson has been quietly taking over the superhero genre for the last few years, playing a key role in all of Marvel’s Netflix shows (except the upcoming Punisher series), popping up as Batgirl in The Lego Batman Movie, and even playing Wonder Woman in DC’s animated movies. She was also in Sin City, which was based on a comic book even if it wasn’t about superheroes.
So, with DC and Marvel pretty well covered, Dawson has now set her sights on the X-Men universe, and according to Variety, she’s currently in talks to join director Josh Boone’s “full-fledged horror movie” New Mutants. Dawson would play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a mentor for the young mutants who has the ability to “generate an invisible bio-field around herself.” Assuming she does get the job, she’ll be appearing alongside Maisie Williams as werewolf girl Wolfsbane and Anya...

Cartoon Network will host Warner Bros' DC Super Hero Girls animated series, which starts next year...
Warner Bros and DC Entertainment are set to bolster the female representation in their animated output, teaming with Cartoon Network for a show entitled DC Super Hero Girls. Despite the on-the-nose title - which it shares with a toy range, a series of online shorts and some straight-to-video movies - this sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

This weekend, veteran producer Denise Di Novi saw her directorial debut, Warner Bros.’ “Unforgettable,” make an underwhelming box-office debut with an estimated $4.8 million for the weekend. For most women, that would be the kiss of death: Very few women get the chance to direct studio films, and underperformance means there won’t be an encore. That won’t be the case for Di Novi.

Update: Since this initial report from Variety, EW has come out and shared some rumors from their sources regarding what to expect from this version of Batgirl. According to the outlet, they'll be using the New 52 version of the character as a starting point. Here's the quote:
"Sources tell EW that this version will be Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon, and the movie will use the DC Comics “New 52” version of the character as a starting point."It’s unclear how much of that series, written by Gail Simone, will be incorporated into Whedon’s film, but sources tell EW the movie will follow Simone’s harder-edged storyline rather than the more comical, playful 'Batgirl of Burnside' series that was rebooted in 2014, featuring the hero as a social-media obsessed student living in a hipster neighborhood of Gotham."

The man who masterminded the Marvel cinematic universe maybe switching sides as Joss Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an Batgirl film for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.
According to EW, the film will not be taking its cues from the rebirth more playful Batgirl run but instead draw heavily on Gail Simone’s 2011 'Batgirl' new 52 run.
It would not be the first time Whedon has worked with WB as he was once slated to directed and write a Wonder Woman feature before it collapsed.

Batgirl is coming to the big screen, and Joss Whedon is helping her get there. The “Avengers” helmer will write, direct and produce a standalone film for Warner Bros. about the superheroine, reports Variety. The movie, to which no one else is yet attached, will be part of the DC Extended Universe and follow this summer’s “Wonder Woman” as the second project in that franchise to center around a female lead.

With the Wonder Woman live action movie set to arrive in theaters in just over two months, it’s understandable that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment will want to put out as much merchandise bearing the likeness of the Amazon Princess as possible. One item in particular that’s worthy of attention is that of the forthcoming Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition.
Truth be told, it’s technically not a new offering, but rather a repackaging of the amazing animated film originally released back in 2009. Unfortunately, no R-rated cut will be included as was previously reported. Despite any second guessing you may have, do know that one exists out there somewhere, as the filmmakers have admitted they had to make some alterations in order to get the PG-13 rating because, at the time, WB didn’t afford as much leeway with mature content as they do now.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
2017 is just getting started, but we’ve already seen an unusually wide variety of hit movies that ranges from corporate behemoths (“Beauty and the Beast”) to culture-shaking phenomenons (“Get Out”). Some of these blockbusters have been safe (it’s hard to imagine that something like “Justice League” won’t make actual buckets of money when it hits later this year), or even cynical (who knew that “Split” could upend the box office so early, and kinda stay there?), while others have pushed the needle forward and inspired the type of fervid conversation that’s usually reserved for television.

The concept of the DC Comics’ mystical characters gathering to combat occult evil always sounds good but of course, execution is everything. When it was done sparingly, as in Swamp Thing #50, it was quite effective. As an ongoing series, it proved tough to manage since each player was plucked from a title that had a fairly unique look and feel.
That said, the newly released animated Justice League Dark film is incredibly entertaining and certainly a cut above the last half-dozen releases. From a story by Jld writer J.M. DeMatteis and Ernie Altbacker, Altbacker’s script shifts the super-heroic DC Universe to supernatural threats that Superman (Jerry O’Connell), Wonder Woman (Rosario Dawson), Green Lantern (Roger Cross) and the others are less equipped to handle. Altbacker is no stranger to heroes and magicians with credits including Spooksville and Green Lantern: The Animated Series and he does a fine job weaving the various threads.

Warner Bros. has released a stylish new batch of character posters for The Lego Batman Movie, and any one of them will make a perfect wallpaper on your phone (I'm definitely going with Will Arnett's Caped Crusader). With respect to Wonder Woman and Justice League, this looks like 2017's best DC Comics adaptation, and it's almost certainly going to be a worthy successor to The Lego Movie. In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The Lego Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – Lego Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure: The Lego Batman Movie. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Based on this new trailer, that's...

A different threat takes a different team. When Superman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League determine that they are ill equipped to deal with a new paranormal threat, Batman declares that John Constantine holds their only chance at achieving victory. Joining them are Zatanna, Etrigan the Demon, Boston Brand and Swamp Thing. That's quite the powerful team assembled, one that might even give the real Justice League a run for their money. Surely they'll be enough to defeat Felix Faust and his dark minions. To check out a previously released clip, Click Here. Justice League Dark is out on digital January 24, 2017 and blu-ray/DVD on February 7, 2017. Justice League Dark is directed by Jay Olivia and stars Matt Ryan, Camilla Luddington, Jason O'Mara, Jb Blanc, Ray Chase, Enrico Colantoni, Roger R. Cross, Jeremy Davies, Rosario Dawson, Brian T. Delaney, Alfred Molina, Jerry O'Connell, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Jeffrey Vincent Parise,...

Probably the biggest question many comic book fans want to know about Justice League Action is whether it's 100% slapstick aimed at young kids (à la Teen Titans Go!), or if there's a Pixar-esque approach to the story where adults can find something to enjoy and connect with as they watch with their kids (or by themselves, this is a judge free zone)? The show is a fresh mix of both approaches and the result is a kid's program that's tonally reminiscent of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. However, where that show was a simplified, episodic baddie-of-the-week/team-up adventure series, Justice League Action appears to be laying groundwork for a season-long storyline that should please old school Bruce Timm fans. Yet, what may throw some fans off are the revamped characterizations for some of the most prominent DC heroes. Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter and even Superman are depicted very differently from previous animated renditions.

DC All Access has released a new clip from DC Animation's upcoming film Justice League Dark. It features John Constantine playing a demonic game of poker. As you'll see, playing poker with a group of demons can be interesting. There's some cheating, talk of David Copperfield, and a pun on betting the house.
In the film, "Batman reunites an intrepid team of occult heroes like John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, Swamp Thing, and Black Orchid to deal with supernatural threats that the Justice League wouldn't often handle."
The studio is also developing a live-action film based on Justice League Dark that is being directed by Doug Liman. This animated film seems like it will be a good way of being introduced to these characters if you're already not familiar with them.

The cover art for Justice League Dark is finally here, and yes, it puts Batman right in the centre. To be fair, it does sound like he plays a key role in the movie and using him to help sell it regardless of how much screen time he has is a pretty smart move on the part of Warner Bros. Animation. The studio has also announced that it will debut digitally on January 24th, 2017 and on DVD and Blu-ray on February 7th, 2017. With any luck, this will be successful enough to help move along the live-action version. In Justice League Dark, Matt Ryan returns to the role of John Constantine alongside Jason O’Mara as Batman, Camilla Luddington as Zatanna, Nicholas Turturro as Deadman, Ray Chase as Jason Blood/Etrigan, Roger R. Cross as John Stewart/Swamp Thing, Jeremy Davies as Ritchie Simpson, Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Jerry O’Connell as Superman,...

Next year we'll see Batman and Wonder Woman travel all over the world to recruit The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg in Justice League. But if Zack Snyder and the DC Extended Universe on the big screen aren't really working for you these days, there is an alternative. It's called Justice League Dark and will see Batman teaming up with Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Ertigan the Demon. No, the long brewing live-action Justice League Dark didn't suddenly materialize overnight. This Justice League Dark is part of the DC Animated Universe and it comes from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns director Jay Olivia. And while the cartoon nature of it may have you thinking this is an all-ages affair, the MPAA has actually handed this an R-rated for...

After releasing a rather robust line of DC animated films in 2016, Warner Bros. Animation looks to continue that trend in 2017, having just debuted a breathtaking new trailer for Justice League Dark. Showcasing characters that are no stranger to the magical arts and deal with the darker corners of the DC Universe (well, obviously), this movie charts bold new territory for superhero filmmaking, which we’ll discuss momentarily.
When a supernatural force is the cause of a global threat and is deemed too severe for the usual heroes to handle, Batman (Jason O’Mara) recommends calling in none other than John Constantine, a role thankfully reprised by Matt Ryan, who played everyone’s favorite exorcist on the unfortunately short lived TV series. This eventually leads to involving other beloved DC characters not as well known to the mainstream such as Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), Swamp Thing (Roger R. Cross), Deadman (Nicholas Turturro...

Following the commercial success of Batman: The Killing Joke this past summer, the DC Animated Movie Universe really seems to be embracing that adult-skewing R-rating because they've just announced that their next full-length feature, Justice League Dark, will also sport the same certification, thanks to "some disturbing violence." IGN debuted the first official trailer for the Jay Oliva-directed film earlier this afternoon and have also uncovered new details regarding the supernatural heroes and the voices that will breathe life into them. The team will consist of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, Etrigan the Demon, and of course, Batman. Constantine will be voiced by his live-action counterpart Matt Ryan while Jason O'Mara will return to voice Batman, Tomb Raider mo-cap actress Camilla Luddington will voice Zatanna, Nicholas Turturro will voice Deadman, Ray Chase will voice Jason Blood/Etrigan, Jerry O'Connell will return to voice Superman, and Rosario Dawson will...

Anyone who loves superheroes these days seems to have that one cartoon that resonated with them, leading to an undying love for it. Children of the 1990’s will likely wax nostalgia over Batman: The Animated Series or X-Men: The Animated Series, while others who prefer the decade that followed remember Justice League Unlimited and Spectacular Spider-Man quite fondly.
This particular decade’s biggest breakout was arguably Young Justice, a series that placed the focus on sidekicks such as Robin/Nightwing, Superboy, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Miss Martian, Artemis and others who were coming of age and ready to take their place in the limelight. But it was unfortunately cut short after only two seasons due to a lack of merchandise sales – even though not much was manufactured to being with. It was a ridiculous Catch 22, to say the least.

Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 10/12/2016
A little late this time around, but never forgotten! This week I take a quick look at the developing stories from DC’s Rebirth line up. While not a huge week for story development, we do get to wrap up a few plots and open the doors to a few more!

To do that she pretends to the Lois Lane of New 52 Universe, and as expected things don’t go completely as planned. Jurgens continues to do an excellent job here with how he handles the characters. As per usual, a DC animation panel held at a major convention bore some generous fruit. This time, it pertained to one of WB’s most ambitious projects in the superhero genre: Justice League Dark.
For those unfamiliar, Justice League Dark is an upcoming animated movie based on the comic book series of the same name that will see characters such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, and Zatanna join forces to combat the darkest mystical threats the DC Universe has to offer – not everything is a job for Superman. Not only that, but Batman will factor into this adaptation too because, well, he’s a proven success and will no doubt get casual fans to buy out of curiosity.

This time around I am going to open up a bit more on the adventures of The Dark Knight, and take a look at some of the bigger, and in my opinion, best stories for potential Batman readers. This will include small and big story lines that exist in various continuities within the DC Comics publication history for the character. Maddy has been pretty vocal this year about how she is with DC, though even more than Rebirth, Batgirl and Birds of Prey, we are both obsessed with DC Super Hero Girls. Yes, it is aimed for girls 6 -12, but we dare anyone to not love this. Start with the video shorts and eventually move onto the books and toy. And now there’s a new movie.
DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year premiered at Comc-Con, but just this week it’s been released on DVD and we already know it will be running non-stop on every little kid’s minivan TV. Apparently there’s so much action boys like it too. Why oh why was this not a thing when we were kids?

The eight-minute featurette for “Justice League Dark,” that is included in the special features for “Batman: The Killing Joke,” has just been released for fans to check out. The animated film is Warner Bros. Animation’s latest DC project and features the superhero team composed of John Constantine, Black Orchid, Etrigan, Zatanna, Deadman and Swamp Thing.
The Justice League Dark is a team that focuses on supernatural and magical threats, not related to the Justice League in anyway.
