I don't often put spoilers in a review, but here I go. This is predominantly because the one and only other reviewer thus far has totally failed to see any 'chemistry' between Pearl and Mike, whereas it has been blindingly obvious since episode 1. And at last here it is on full show. Hallelujah! And about time too!
He carries the grief of his very recent widowhood, at times wearing it on his sleeve, but she has at all times been sensitive to this. In the meantime their mutual respect for their detective ability has grown and grown, and they are proving to be very complementary characters. A match made in Whitstable!
As for the episode itself, the plot was a bit obvious, with a highly controlling older woman believing in her own highly controlling way that she was doing right for her daughter and granddaughter, and prepared to go to all manner of lengths to maintain their puppet status with her.
I might have almost given it 9/10 for the long-awaited relief of the romantic New Year ending, but the other stuff that went before could not be ignored. 8/10 .
