Like it or not, network TV series typically live and die by their Nielsen ratings. Since most fans do not live in Nielsen households, the average person's preferences aren't taken into account, and that is frustrating. While we can't change the system, we want to give you an outlet for your opinions, so we invite you to vote for your favorite 2023-24 network TV shows here. Which programs are the best or the worst? If it were up to you, which TV series would be cancelled and renewed?

“Let’s not make ’em laugh” seems to be the new mantra for rewarding comedies at the Emmys.
Clear-cut, humor-filled chuckle fests once dominated the Emmys for comedy series, with classics such as “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Seinfeld” amusing generations of fans and finding new life via reruns and streaming services.
However, at the dawn of the streaming era, the multi-pronged so-called dramedy began creeping up in the awards circle with titles such as Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” — which famously changed from comedy to drama — and Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” As of late, the category has taken a more serious turn.
In recent years, the nominees and winners for comedy series have reflected a broader, more inclusive interpretation of comedy. Shows like Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag,” along with HBO’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” have garnered critical...

For the last three decades, the multi-hyphenate Lisa Ann Walter, who began her career in stand-up comedy, made her mark as a character actor in films such as Bruce Almighty, Eddie and Shall We Dance? However, for most millennials, Walter is best known for playing Chessy, the beloved nanny in Nancy Meyer’s The Parent Trap. These days, nearly a quarter of a century later, Walter has emerged in the spotlight on ABC’s award-winning mockumentary Abbott Elementary, where she plays the Italian-American spitfire Melissa Schemmenti, a second and third-grade teacher at an underfunded Philadelphia public school. Here, she discusses the joys of playing the elementary school teacher and her own educational upbringing.
Deadline: You’ve returned to doing stand-up recently. How has it been going back on stage versus being behind the camera on Abbott Elementary?
Lisa Ann Walter: I was a stage actress first in musicals and plays.

Hi. Yes. Sorry to bother you. Hello. Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Savior, Deborah Vance? The Emmy award-winning series "Hacks" has just finished its phenomenal third season, one that many fans (myself included) were terrified wouldn't be able to match the triumphant heights of season 2. The second season ended in a way that felt complete if Max were to have pulled the plug on the show, but after the absolutely dynamite season 3 finale, "Hacks" has proven itself as a series that can and should continue as long as stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder want to keep playing Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels, respectively.
It's exciting as a "Hacks" fan from the very start to see so many people finally catching onto what is arguably the best comedy show on TV that isn't "Abbott Elementary" or the not-really-a-comedy brilliance that is "The Bear," especially...

Forty-four years after “9 to 5” became a cinematic sensation and rally cry for women’s rights, stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin reunited to celebrate the Hollywood premiere of the documentary “Still Working 9 to 5.”
The original comedy followed a trio of office workers conspiring to put a check on their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” of a boss, played by the late Dabney Coleman. In April, it was announced that Jennifer Aniston’s Echo Films was set to produce a “reimagining” of the movie for 20th Century Studios.
“We hope she has great success,” Tomlin told Variety. “It’s a hard nut to crack because the issues are somewhat different.”
“I hope she does it,” Fonda interjected.
“There’s still the undercurrent of the same kind of negativity towards females … [they’re] not easy-to-solve issues. So we’re very eager to see what they do,” Tomlin added.

The cast of Abbott Elementary has been working hard at Willard R. Abbott Elementary, but no one more than second-grade teacher Janine Teagues.
The main cast has remained mostly the same since the comedy's inception.
Quinta Brunson stepped in a different light as we saw her work in her new role as a temporary fellowship in the school district.
This gave Season 3 a little twist, following her trying to adjust to bureaucracy and her co-workers' happenings.
The cast brings mightier humor to our TV screens each new season.

In the week since our 2024 Emmy predictions center expanded to include the guest acting categories, a strong consensus has formed around four potential winners from three different series. The one show that is expected to achieve double victories in this area is FX’s “The Bear,” which won’t have much trouble doing so if our users are correct about it taking up seven of the possible 12 comedy guest nomination slots.
The widely predicted guest winners from “The Bear” are Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis, the former of whom was just nominated last year for the show’s inaugural season. The likeliest drama guest victors are potential Emmy first-timer Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) and 2021 champ Claire Foy (“The Crown”). Foy would be only the third actress to win twice in her category for one role, after Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”) and Margo Martindale (“The Americans”).

Chris Perfetti Thinks ‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 4 Might Be Even More Meta Than Season 3 [Interview]
After three critically acclaimed and award-winning seasons, Chris Perfetti still finds it hard to watch himself on “Abbott Elementary.” But as Jacob, the “social puppy dog” of “Abbott’s” faculty, Perfetti finds himself more and more ingrained in different storylines and he’s having to get more comfortable with it. Especially considering the strikes limited the 2024 season to just 14 episodes.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess drama, now with “Shōgun.”
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we went from having no clear frontrunner in the Best Drama Series category to what seems like a runway favorite. Last week, FX finally announced “Shōgun” will compete as a drama series as two additional seasons are being planned for… sometime in the future. Good for Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo and producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada. Not only will they get paid for spearheading the year’s one real breakout show not named “Baby Reindeer,” but they’re also more likely than ever to win Emmys for their work. Or maybe they were always going to win. Regardless! It didn’t take me long to...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 3, Episode 14, “Party.”] Abbott Elementary‘s third season came to a close with a shocking turn of events in Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) relationship as she hosts a party for her colleagues. The end-of-school-year celebration is carefully crafted as Janine designates different sections of her small apartment for specific people and activities. One individual who acknowledges her planning is Gregory, who clearly still has feelings for her despite being deterred from exploring things further in the previous installment. When guests like Manny (Josh Segarra) and Olivia (Lana Condor) arrive, the tension between Janine and Gregory is further exacerbated as they continue to be unsure about where they stand with one another. [This story contains spoilers from the Abbott Elementary season three finale, “Party.”]
If there’s one issue viewers have had with the beloved ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary over its three seasons, it’s that Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) have yet to take their working relationship to the next level, as fans have been shipping the pair since its season one debut.
After a painstaking episode 13, “Smith Playground,” in which Janine and Gregory’s plans to tell each other how they feel are thwarted by fellow teacher, Mr. Morton’s bitter warning to “never date someone you work with,” audiences began to lose hope. But in the final minutes of the season three finale episode, “Party,” which aired Wednesday night, the two share a passionate kiss at Janine’s end of the school year bash, putting an end to the tortuous will-they-won’t they dynamic between the teachers.

With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

Abbott Elementary‘s third season closes its run on May 22, and in anticipation of the episode’s arrival, TV Insider caught up with star Tyler James Williams, who is teasing that when it comes to what’s in store, fans are “not ready.” As viewers saw in the previous installment, the Abbott crew took their students to a playground for an epic field trip that ended in a competition against the school led by Ava’s (Janelle James) frenemy Crystal (Tatyana Ali). At the same time, Jacob (Chris Perfetti) hinted to Gregory (Tyler James Williams) and Janine (Quinta Brunson) that romantic feelings remained between them. Disney/Gilles Mingasson Just as fans thought they’d get a romantic payoff, Mr. Morton (Jerry Minor) chimed in to warn about the dangers of dating a coworker as he and his wife deal with hardships over their unraveling marriage. Netflix’s epic royal drama The Crown came to its end last year showing Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II torn between her wish for a calmer life and duty to serve her country as its rightful monarch.
The final episode also featured the Queen’s younger versions, portrayed by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, in a short, yet defining sequence that later on turned into a concluding moment for the whole series.
Although both actresses’ comebacks to the show were a one-time option, their astounding performances received a raving reaction from both critics and fans, yet only one of them now has a chance to get a prestigious TV award.
In The Crown’s final episode titled Sleep, Dearie Sleep, Queen Elizabeth II is confronted by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman’s Queens talking her into either keep going with her duty to serve the nation until the very last day of her life,...

“The Crown” can only play a pair of Queens at the Emmys.
Emmy winner Olivia Colman, who portrayed Queen Elizabeth in the series finale episode of Netflix’s monarchy drama, is not eligible to submit in the guest drama actress race by only a few seconds. However, her co-star Claire Foy, who also portrays Her Majesty in her younger years and appears in the same episode, is eligible and will be the sole guest submission for the series, angling for her second win in the category.
The “Sleep, Dearie Sleep,” written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry, clocks in at a robust 72 minutes, the longest of any episode across its six seasons. In the series’ final moments, Imelda Staunton’s Elizabeth looks back on the highs and lows of her reign as she grapples with the idea of handing the crown to Charles. Her younger self appears to...

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

With “The Golden Bachelor” remaining one of the network’s top shows among Adults 18-49, ABC announced in February that it had greenlit a spinoff titled “The Golden Bachelorette,” which will air Wednesday nights this fall.
While presenting its 2024-2025 fall primetime schedule, the network announced that Joan Vassos, the 61-year-old grandmother and school administrator from Rockville, Maryland, the fan favorite from “The Golden Bachelor,” who self-eliminated herself from the competition when a medical concern with her daughter arose, will seek a second chance at finding love as the first-ever Golden Bachelorette.
Despite other challenges she’s faced along the way – including the heartbreaking loss of her husband after 32 years of marriage – ABC notes that Vassos remains “an embodiment of strength and grace as a devoted mother of four, grandmother of three, and school administrator while finding solace in the music of Elton John, spending time with her dog, and cooking.

ABC recently unveiled its 2024-2025 primetime schedule, which sees the network airing just five scripted series, including new dramas “High Potential” and “Doctor Odyssey.” “Grey’s Anatomy” will shift one hour to the 10:00 p.m. slot on Thursdays while the network will mark the return of “The Wonderful World of Disney” to its schedule.

Following “Dancing with the Stars” will be “High Potential,” written by Oscar-nominated Drew Goddard and based on the popular French series. Universal chairman Donna Langley oversaw a record year for the studio last year, finishing No. 1 at the box office and closing out awards season with seven Oscars including best picture for Christopher Nolan’s billion dollar grosser Oppenheimer. Even with that level of success, Langley prefers to have “healthy competitors” around her in Hollywood because it’s “just better for the business.”
Which is why she says it’s “sad” to see the state of the industry right now with a potential sale of Paramount Pictures looming and continued challenges facing the theatrical marketplace. “Consolidation is inevitable,” Langley told Variety co-editor in chief Ramin Setoodeh on Saturday afternoon in Cannes during a special Women in Motion conversation presented by Kering. The luxury group is honoring Langley on Sunday evening at its Women in Motion Awards for her recent run. “I’m not suggesting it’s Paramount but there’ll just be further consolidation.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder if some old faves can over-perform in comedy.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to laugh again about this year’s Emmys comedy race. This has remained a pretty stable race, so much so that not even FX seems concerned about “The Bear” and its status as the obvious frontrunner. The third season of the show comes back on June 27, after Emmy nominations voting has closed and well before final voting begins. It seems like Season 2 of “The Bear” is so far out in front that it might not even need Season 3 to goose its win potential. That’s maybe bad news for our beloved “Hacks,” which always faced an uphill battle in Best Comedy Series but...

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

“Baby Reindeer” has quickly become a cultural juggernaut, with viewers swarming to watch this Netflix limited series written and created by Richard Gadd, who also stars. He adapted his Olivier Award-winning play about his years as a struggling comedian when he was stalked and harassed by a woman, played the fabulous Jessica Gunning. The show also depicts his abuse at the hands of an older man who first acted as a mentor. The series is a tough watch at times but always a gripping one. It’s searing television and, as a result, “Baby Reindeer” is one of the most acclaimed shows of the year.

When Quinta Brunson first introduced second grade teacher Janine Teagues in season one of Abbott Elementary, she purposely had the character dress in awkward clothing, from frumpy sweaters paired with chunky belts to long maxi skirts with sneakers. She barely wore makeup and didn’t pay much attention to her hair.
But in season three, as Teagues takes a break from teaching to work at the Philadelphia school district, viewers see her forge ahead: She’s in tailored suits, fitted blazers and heels. She’s stepped up her makeup game and her curls are defined. And the middle part in her hair drives the point home: This is her glow up.
It’s something Brunson has been planning from day one.
“I always wanted this evolution for Janine,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I always joke that [Janine] watched some YouTube videos over the summer. She learned a quick makeup tutorial.

Man, we didn't know how good we had it, did we? For those of us who grew up watching cable TV as a simple matter of course, looking back on what we took for granted might as well feel like taking a peek at an alternate dimension. Receiving access to dozens (and eventually hundreds) of channels for a flat monthly rate? In an environment that allowed movies to receive a second wind and thrive after their theatrical run came to a close? Giving countless television shows a chance to grow their viewership over time? All while writers and directors were paid the residuals they deserved every time their work aired? In this economy???
Nobody should ever make the mistake of confusing capitalism for innovation, but the streaming era has certainly put to bed any notion that the tech industry is on the cutting edge of new, game-changing ideas. To wit:...

The best thing about television is that it is constantly changing to better suit the interests of its audience. However, there are many dangers behind these changes, as they sometimes result in the popular shows being cut short, moved to the least attractive time slot, or even canceled altogether.
These changes coming from one of the ‘big four’ cable TV networks, ABC, are already making fans of Grey's Anatomy and Abbott Elementary lose their minds over the new 2024/2025 schedule in which their favorite shows have gotten the shorter end of the stick. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 3, Episode 13, “Smith Playground.”] Abbott Elementary took the action outdoors in its latest episode, “Smith Playground” as the school headed to a park for a local field trip. The only catch? They had to share the space with Liberty’s students and teachers, leading to some hilarious tensions among the adults. In charge of Liberty’s kids and teachers is Principal Crystal (Tatyana Ali) who was introduced earlier this season as Ava’s (Janelle James) frenemy and former sorority sister. When Ava realizes that the tensions her faculty complained about during the field trip are related to Crystal, she spearheads a competitive relay race on the playground where the dueling school teachers could participate for a chance to win the park to themselves for the rest of the afternoon. While Abbott reigns supreme in the competition, the teachers from both schools quickly learn that their disagreements don’t...

Disney CEO Bob Iger said that as the traditional pay-tv universe continues to shrink, the company is cutting its investment in programming for linear entertainment TV networks while amortizing overall content spending across streaming platforms.
The strategy is “to reduce pretty dramatically our investment in content specifically aimed at those traditional networks,” Iger said Wednesday at MoffettNathanson’s 2024 Media, Internet and Communications Conference in New York. The conclusion Iger reached after reviewing Disney’s TV business when he returned as CEO in the fall of 2022 was that “it’s not a growth business, but it could become an important component to our ability to basically engage with the consumer.”
Iger’s comments come a day after Disney’s big upfront presentation in New York announcing a slate of new shows across TV and streaming.

Bradley Cooper may have lost to others in his latest Oscar nominations once again, but he still might take another statuette home this year. The actor had a brief cameo role in ABC’s mockumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary appearing in the third season’s episode 6 titled Willard R. Abbott.
The episode was ironically released on March 10, the same day that the Oscar ceremony took place, and now it seems like Cooper is still striving for any kind of award that has something to do with that memorable date.
Given that the actor’s screen time in the episode was quite limited and had an overall run of less than 2 minutes, some may wonder whether it’s even possible to submit something like this for a Primetime Emmy nomination, especially after the Television Academy changed the rules earlier this year.
