One of HBO’s former hot properties returns in a big way this January, as True Detective season four finally arrives on the service. Will this be a return to form for the gritty show? Well, that remains unclear, but this time around the anthology series will follow detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as the long winter darkness in Alaska. When eight people at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, these detectives need to get on the case quickly.
Also hitting Max this month is the final season of Sort Of. Season three finds Sabi (Bilal Baig) dealing with the unexpected death of their father, and making some big life choices as a result.

After years and years of being hugely successful, Oscar-winning stars that have had tremendous success at the box office, respectively, two powerhouse actresses are going to share the screen for the very first time in a new action-thriller. The movie in question is "Maude v Maude" and it will see Halle Berry ("X-Men") and Angelina Jolie ("Maleficent") going toe-to-toe. Here's what we know about the project thus far.
According to Deadline, plot details are largely being kept under wraps but it is being described as a "Bond vs. Bourne" global action thriller. The package was subject to a pretty intense bidding war, but Warner Bros. came out on top and will release the movie when the time comes. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but one assumes they paid a pretty penny for the privilege. But Warner Bros. didn't just buy a pair of stars: they bought a...

Legendary comedian, actor and artist Jim Carrey joined Twitter’s celebrity exodus Tuesday, offering up his love and an animated video version of his “crazy old lighthouse keeper” painting.
Carrey, who in recent years has taken a step back from Hollywood and focused more on his artwork, collaborated with animator and director Jimmy Hayward to take Carrey’s latest work of art and add a creative twist to it with music and movement.
“It’s based on my painting of a crazy old Lighthouse Keeper, standing naked in a storm, summoning the angels and shining his lamp to guide us through a treacherous night,” Carrey wrote in the blurb accompanying the video animation, which you can watch below.

Another celebrity is bidding farewell to Twitter: beloved Canadian comedian Jim Carrey.
Carrey has long used the social media platform to share his artwork, which has typically been political satire critical of twice-impeached one-term president Donald Trump and assorted Republicans.
Given that history, it’s fitting that Carrey’s final tweet features an animated cartoon based on one of his paintings.

Even though the parameters of the Christmas movie are pretty well established at this point, the merits of more unconventional titles like Die Hard, Batman Returns and Gremlins still find themselves being debated on an annual basis. Most people seem to be in agreement that the Christmas film needs to involve the festive season as either a backdrop or major plot point while incorporating themes of family and togetherness, but what exactly is a Thanksgiving movie?
Is it a pic where the holiday is integral to the narrative like Ike Barinholtz’ directorial debut The Oath? Does it have to specifically involve turkeys in some way like the animated Free Birds? Or the annual Macy’s parade as seen in Ben Stiller’s forgotten Tower Heist? Perhaps one single scene set around the Thanksgiving table is enough to fit the criteria, as appears to be the case with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

As much as we appreciate a special bird for its sacrifice for our holiday meals, the term "turkeys" has always been associated with things that fail, no matter how hard they try.
We love to eat them, but we don't have any qualms tying them the worst of any discussion, which, in this case, is all about television.
So while you're giving props to the bird on your table, let's talk turkey in another way with the awful programming we're calling TV's Biggest Turkeys.
Coffee & Kareem - Netflix
This Netflix movie heralded a cast including the likes of Ed Helm and Taraji P. Henson. It should've been funny, or at least made the viewer smile.
However, it was unnecessarily explicit and profane with an obnoxious, foul-mouthed 12-year-old, a dopey police officer, and a tired retreaded buddy cop attempt that skirted along the lines of racist Af. It wasn't just bad,...

Exclusive: CBS All Access is developing The Multivorce, an adult animated TV series created by Kirker Butler (Family Guy) and Scott Mosier (The Grinch), I have learned. It hails from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios.
Described by sources as Marriage Story mixed with Rick and Morty, The Multivorce is a half-hour animated comedy about the Gundersons, a seemingly normal American family: mother, father, three kids dealing with the complicated realities of divorce. However, instead of the kids having to spend every other weekend at their father’s shitty bachelor apartment across town, they spend every other weekend with their warrior queen mother in her very exciting (and often very dangerous) kingdom somewhere in the Multivorce.

Hulu is out with its list of everything that’s coming and going from the streaming service in April, which should come in handy assuming we’re all still in isolation next month due to coronavirus.
The third and final season of “Future Man,” which stars Josh Hutcherson, Eliza Coupe, and Derek Wilson, will be available on April 3.

Avid fans of the Dr. Seuss canon that were excited to bring one of the author’s most well-known characters to life in a new animated iteration, Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney set out on a long process of trial and error, seeking to bring a freshness to The Grinch. The third adaptation of a classic 1957 children’s book, Illumination Entertainment’s latest would place Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of the iconic green curmudgeon, setting out to ruin Christmas for those pesky Whos of Whoville once and for all.
Making his feature debut alongside veteran Cheney, Mosier had produced a 3D animated film in 2013—Free Birds, starring Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson—getting a “crash course” in the form. So, when it came to The Grinch, the challenge wasn’t learning the ropes—it was taking a pre-existing world and fleshing its 60-something pages out, playing with story, character and world design where possible,...

Saturday Am Update: WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation is off to an excellent start, bringing in an estimated $15 million on Friday (including $4 million from Thursday previews) on its way to a weekend around $35 million if not more. It's also great news for director David F. Sandberg who helmed last year's hit Lights Out for WB. That film went on to gross nearly $150 million worldwide on a budget under $5 million. The film received a "B" CinemaScore, matching the score for the first film. Open Road's The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature is performing even worse than expected, delivering an estimated $3 million on Friday. This is already shaping up to be the lowest opening for a film playing in over 4,000 theaters by a wide margin. Currently the worst opening for an opening that size belongs to The Emoji Movie with $24.5 million, but with the $9 million or so Nut Job 2 is...

Don’t get too excited, geologists: “Rock Dog” isn’t about an animal into minerals. It’s music that stirs the mountain mastiff in this sweet if ineffectual animated movie, purportedly the first instance of a Chinese animation property — an adaptation of Zheng Jun’s graphic novel “Tibetan Rock Dog” — outsourcing its production to America (“Free Birds” studio Reel FX). With obvious nods to the melding of Eastern and Western cultures, and a hoped-for international appeal, the result is a low-key, simple — very, very simple — story of pursuing one’s dreams (and protecting sheep and foiling wolves) that never exactly soars.

Taking a closer look at the cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemTaking a closer look at the cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemAdriana Floridia11/17/2016 9:56:00 Am
This November, we'll be meeting a whole new cast of characters from the mind of J.K. Rowling when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits Cineplex theatres on November 18th. When Harry Potter first came out, the films didn't just give us Harry, Ron and Hermione, but also Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
While some of the members of this new cast are familiar faces, for many of them this is the biggest project they've yet to be a part of, and the film is bound to introduce these actors to a whole new audience. We're taking a closer look at the cast, one by one.

“Billy on the Street” is TV’s adrenaline shot. Whether the hijinks come from the show’s growing list of guest stars or the flabbergasted hoards of New Yorkers who become putty in the hands of a raving, microphone-wielding Billy Eichner, it’s a tried-and-true formula that’s birthed four full seasons of Manhattan-set surprises. The kinetic, chaotic game show hasn’t yielded any giant cash prizes or faraway vacations, but every episode turns a few random city folks into potential viral superstars.

Despite a fantastic Christmas at the box office, 81 million people didn’t buy movie tickets this year. Not only were this year’s domestic admissions of 1.259 billion off 6% from 2013’s 1.34B, but the number of tickets sold hit their lowest level since 1995 when 1.211B people went to the cinema. Calculations are based on this year’s 3Q ticket price average of $8.12 from the National Association of Theater Owners, just a penny off from 2013’s $8.13. The upside is that thanks to Christmas, 2014 crossed $10 billion with a current estimated running cume for January 1-December 28 of $10.22B per Rentrak Theatrical. Some of the major studios are still on holiday with final figures set to be released on January 5. Here at Deadline we’re weighing 2014 according to the fiscal year of January 1-December 31, and we’ll be providing updates about the year along the way (studios tend to include the first weekend of January...

Brad Pitt's Fury was able to usurp first place from Gone Girl this weekend, though it was a closer race than anticipated.Meanwhile, Birdman opened at four locations in New York and Los Angeles and scored one of the best per-theater averages ever for a live-action movie.Opening at 3,173 theaters, Fury rolled in to first place this weekend with $23.7 million. This debut is in the same general ballpark as movies like Captain Phillips ($25.7 million), Act of Valor ($24.5 million) and The Monuments Men ($22 million). That's a fine range to be in, though it's a bit disappointing considering how far off it is from recent R-rated thrillers Gone Girl ($37.5 million) and The Equalizer ($34.1 million).Sony's marketing played up Fury's intense tank-on-tank action, which made it a strong option among male moviegoers. Unfortunately, the movie never really connected with women, who wound up accounting for just 40 percent of the audience on opening weekend.

On a somewhat quiet day at the box office, Brad Pitt's Fury easily took first place with $8.8 million. That debut is a bit higher than last October's Captain Phillips ($8.5 million), and also noticeably better than The Monuments Men ($6.9 million). Still, it's way off from recent R-rated hits The Equalizer ($12.5 million) and Gone Girl ($13.2 million). For the weekend, Fury is on track to earn $24 to $27 million.Entering its third weekend, Gone Girl eased 32 percent to an estimated $5.55 million. To date, the movie has earned $94.8 million, and will pass $100 million sometime today. For the weekend, Gone Girl will likely earn over $18 million. The Book of Life opened in third place with $4.95 million. That's identical to The Boxtrolls ($4.93 million), and is a bit higher than Reel FX's first feature-length movie (last November's Free Birds, which opened to $3.9 million). For the weekend, The Book of Life should end up between $17 and $18 million.Playing at 2,936 theaters,...

World War II tank movie Fury will almost certainly take the top spot away from two-time winner Gone Girl this weekend. Meanwhile, The Book of Life and The Best of Me are also opening nationwide.Playing at 3,173 theaters, Fury stars Brad Pitt as the leader of an American tank crew making their way through Germany as the second World War draws to a close. With the exception of 2012's Killing Them Softly*which was an odd, dark crime drama*Pitt has been on a strong run lately as a leading man. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Inglourious Basterds and World War Z all earned over $120 million at the domestic box office, while Moneyball was one of the highest-grossing baseball movies ever with $75.6 million.World War II movies have a mixed track record, though the last few installments have done fairly well. Friday Am Update: Neighbors earned an estimated $2.56 million from Thursday night shows beginning at 8 p.m. That's a strong result for a comedy; in comparison, Ted earned $2.63 million from midnight shows in June 2012. While it's unlikely that Neighbors comes close to Ted's $54.4 million debut, it still seems poised for at least $35 million this weekend. Forecast: It's Mother's Day weekend. Do you know what your neighbors are doing? If they're fans of R-rated humor, chances are they're on their way to see Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy Neighbors. Thanks to a highly relatable, laugh-out-loud marketing effort and strong early reactions, the Universal release could earn over $40 million this weekend. That would likely be enough to upset The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is poised for a steep drop from its $91.6 million debut. The superhero sequel has received middling reviews (55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and mixed word-of-mouth ("B+" CinemaScore): on both of those metrics,...

Everybody loves birds. At least that’s what Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox were betting on with last weekend’s Rio 2, the sequel to 2011′s hit animated avian musical comedy. Yet the notices aren’t great – our own Neil Miller gave it a C in his review. I’m sure the film will make a whole bunch of money, especially in merchandising, but a lot of you bird fans are probably staying home. As Adam Bellotto explained in his article about creating a great “animated bird movie,” this is actually a genre. It has rules, or at least guidelines for how to prevent something dreadful like Free Birds. It shouldn’t surprise you, either. Cinema is the art of motion, and there are few acts more mystifying than flight. It sits just out of reach for most live action movies, as it’s a little hard to shoot in the air. Animators...

It’s the weekend of Rio 2. Of bright colors and latin pop and Bruno Mars deciding he can act. And birds — big birds, small birds, bright birds, scheming Jermaine Clement birds. Rio 2 is the latest in a long tradition of bird-themed animated films; a tradition that dates back all the way to Disney’s early shorts like Chicken Little and The Ugly Duckling, and the feature-length The Three Caballeros. Then, sixty years of almost nothing. Once the digital age brought about a slew of new animated features, birds returned en masse. Our new heroes sported ruffled feathers and powerful wingspans. They also choked our cinemas to death with so many forgettable animated bird flicks. Surf’s Up, Happy Feet, Valiant, Free Birds and so forth. The future is dotted with more of the same with Storks, Angry Birds and The Penguins of Madagascar all planning to invade theaters in the next year or two. Now...

For every animated movie that gets made, there are dozens more that never make it. Mark looks at some failed Disney projects...
In the age of the internet, Hollywood studios are much quicker to announce the projects they have in development than they used to be. Now that the demand is there, there's a huge turnover of movie-related news every day, and if you follow it in any significant way, there are probably a whole bunch of projects that you've heard about, maybe even gotten excited about, that never came to fruition.
Still, it's not only via the easier availability of such information that we know about projects that never came to be.
