If you've never sought out the truth behind sci-fi movies and TV shows, you've probably never believed what was happening on your screen. From traveling through time and space to discovering aliens, the genre can have a lot of twists and turns that are hard to imagine in real life.
But you'd be surprised how far science has come and how close humanity is to making these fictional stories real. Here are 10 sci-fi TV shows and movies that aren't true, but could have happened in real life.
Alien (1979)
Ridley Scott's Alien is one of those movies you don't want to believe could ever come true. However, there is one detail that does seem realistic. That’s the clever tag line for the new series “Orphan Black: Echoes,” a spin-off and continuation of the hit series, “Orphan Black” that starred and launched the career of Tatiana Maslany, now known as Marvel’s “She-Hulk.” Set some thirty years later, the series now stars Krysten Ritter, known for “Breaking Bad,” and the Marvel/Netflix series, “Jessica Jones.” Ritter also serves as executive producer and sci-fi thriller will premiere on Sunday, June 23 at 10pm Et/Pt on AMC and BBC America; available to stream on AMC+.

Welcome back, Clone Club! It's been a little while since our last meeting, but it's once again our time to shine. Every "Orphan Black" fan remembers falling down that sci-fi rabbit hole back throughout the mid-2010s, gawking at the television screen as the series somehow found deeper and more labyrinthine plots to follow with every passing season. As complicated and slightly off the rails as the story could get, those of us who found ourselves on its wavelength ended up among the most passionate members of the fandom. You could commonly find us wandering the street corners and flagging down random passersby, eager to preach about the Good News of Tatiana Maslany and her frankly incredible performance(s) as various clones who couldn't possibly be more different from one another.
Now, perhaps a whole new generation of fans is about to spring up with the release of the spin-off/sequel series,...

In an amusingly meta instance of sci-fi imitating sci-fi, “Orphan Black” is getting a futuristic sequel series before anyone has time enough to miss the original. That’s either a big mistake or more of a good thing in a booming genre that could almost always do with more feminist entries.
Set in the year 2052, “Orphan Black: Echoes” stars executive producer Krysten Ritter as an amnesiac woman named Lucy who we meet unraveling the insidious impacts of a mysterious procedure she doesn’t remember having. In a classic streaming age mess-around, the IP extension comes just seven years after the Canadian cult hit became a household name in made-for-tv cloning.

When Orphan Black co-creator John Fawcett read Kat and Niko Troubetzkoy’s new The CW show Sight Unseen, his response gave the half-sisters, who were producers on his own Peabody-winning BBC America series, a jolt of confidence. “We showed him the pilot [script] and he said, ‘This is one of the best detective thrillers I’ve read in a while,” Kat recalls.
The show follows Vancouver homicide detective Tess Avery (Dolly Lewis), who, after experiencing sudden sight loss and becoming clinically blind, resigns from her position. Soon after, she meets Sunny (Agam Darshi), an agoraphobic volunteer on a visual assistance app who remotely provides Tess with visual description via a lapel camera, and the two begin to take up cases on their own.

We don't always talk enough about visual effects when we talk about the components that make up a great film or television series. Quality writing, acting, cinematography, and production design are essential and mutually complementary, of course. But the realm of VFX is equally crucial in the way that it simultaneously informs and is informed by those other disciplines, often constituting the key ingredient that allows a scene or a shot to accomplish its goal -- whether that goal is steeped in authenticity, scariness, wonder, tension, or surrealism.
In that sense, comparing the before and after of shots featuring computer generated imagery (CGI) and effects can be highly instructional. Thanks to the showcase reels released by many VFX studios and behind-the-scenes featurettes, it's possible to get a side-by-side glimpse at what several great TV shows look like prior to the addition of digital effects. The comparisons are sometimes amusing, sometimes revelatory,...

Once and future basic cable golden duo Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira toplined AMC Networks’ meeting with the Television Critics Association on Tuesday, as The Walking Dead actors capped off a presentation of new and returning series that, in many respects, would have made as much sense in 2014 as it does in 2024.
Lincoln and Gurira were on hand to hype the zombie franchise’s sixth spinoff, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. But the growing tally of Walking Dead off-shoots isn’t the only indication of how valuable past properties and players remain to the AMC brands. The media company, a consortium of cable networks (AMC, We TV, Sundance, IFC) and specialty streamers (AMC+, Acorn TV, Allblk, Shudder) banked big on familiar faces and titles over the course of the afternoon — trotting out a new vehicle for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito (Parish), announcing a...

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

"Set in the near future, 'Orphan Black: Echoes' takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence.
"It follows a group of women as they weave their way...

It's hard to believe that the Orphan Black franchise is staging a comeback almost seven years after its series finale.
Thankfully, it looks like Orphan Black: Echoes will fit into the franchise very well.
Krysten Ritter is known for delivering stellar performances, and we should expect more of the same in the AMC, AMC+, and BBC America sequel series, set to air in 2024.
The promo was unveiled during New York Comic Con on Thursday and showcases Ritter as Lucy, a young woman caught up in what we can only describe as a nightmare.

Back in the salad days of “Peak TV” between 2011 and 2016, an iconic series seemed to debut every other month. Of the many shows that spawned passionate followings, the Canadian sci-fi biopunk series “Orphan Black” proved to be among the most prescient. Its themes of cloning, advanced technology, and psychological manipulation anticipated the success of shows like “Westworld,” while its focus on complex female characters was echoed in prestige series like “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “House of the Dragon.”
Now, AMC+ revisits the fertile creative territory of “Orphan Black” with “Orphan Black: Echoes,” a new story set in the world of the original series.
