The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards are behind us. The show featured some surprise winners amidst expected victories for artists like Lainey Wilson and Luke Combs. As the first major country awards precursor of the year, some of the winners might strike a chord with Grammy voters.
SEE2024 ACM Awards winners list: Who took home Academy of Country Music Awards?
Chris Stapleton’s “Higher” might be coming
One of the show’s biggest wins was “Higher” claiming Album of the Year. The record faced off against Morgan Wallen’s ginormous hit “One Thing at a Time,” the follow-up to his also-huge “Dangerous: The Double Album.” Wallen looked like a strong contender, not only due to his commercial numbers, but because “Dangerous” had previously taken the award home, which was significant considering that it came amidst Morgan’s industry backlash for using a racial slur. Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.
Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

Michael Jackson‘s “Blood on the Dance Floor” is one of the most underrated songs of the “Thriller” singer‘s career. While the song’s funky instrumental is fascinatingly dark, the song’s backstory is even darker. The song’s producer revealed that the King of Pop wasn’t even aware of the creepy coincidence behind “Blood on the Dance Floor.”
The connection between Michael Jackson’s ‘Blood on the Dance Floor’ and a shooting
In the 1990s, the “Man in the Mirror” star started experimenting with the R&b subgenre known as new jack swing. Who better to help him than Teddy Riley, the lead singer of the band Blackstreet? Riley worked with Jackson on the final three studio albums the King of Pop released in his lifetime — Dangerous, HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, and Invincible — as well as the remix album Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix.

When Disney purchased the 20th Century Fox library in 2019, it caused some consternation among cineastes. The Fox catalog was vast and impressive, containing tons of indelible classics and even more titles waiting deep inside the studio's archive. 20th Century Fox was formed in 1935 and quickly became one of the "big five" studios that dominated the film industry for decades. Fox hadn't seen a shake-up this dramatic since 1985 when ultra-conservative media mogul Rubert Murdoch bought a controlling share of the company from Marvin Davis.
When Disney made its purchase, many film fans wondered if Fox's old classics would be made more widely available through the about-to-launch Disney+. When the streaming service debuted with a paltry 500 titles, cineastes were aghast. Why buy all those Fox titles if you're not going to distribute them?
That, however, was merely the end of the road for Fox. For its 83-year life, the studio went through many massive,...

Michael Jackson‘s biggest hits were all inspired by one style of music — and it’s not pop. It’s not even modern. One of the other members of The Jackson 5 explained the King of Pop’s “scientific” approach to songwriting.
Michael Jackson’s brother explained what he was thinking when he wrote his biggest hits
Jermaine Jackson was a member of The Jackson 5. In his 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael, Through a Brother’s Eyes, Jermaine had great insight into his brother’s musical compositions. The King of Pop felt music was a “science” and he wanted to study it the same way that scientists study DNA. Jermaine revealed that the “Thriller” singer tried to listen to classical pieces as much as possible in order to study their compositions. He also felt that different pieces had different “colors” and he discussed these colors with his brother.

Michael Jackson‘s “Beat It” proved that the King of Pop could be the King of Rock when he wanted to be. While “Beat It” has an iconic music video, it isn’t Jackson’s best rock tune. It might not even be his second-best rock tune. Here’s a look at Jackson, the rock star.
Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ isn’t as good as ‘Give In to Me’
“Beat It” is musically violent, but it’s a song about pacifism. That’s an oddball choice if there ever was one. When John Lennon sang about nonviolence, he wrote folk ditties and pop ballads. Meanwhile, Jackson tries to instill peace, love, and understanding in his listeners while hitting them over the head with Eddie Van Halen’s guitar. In its own strange way, “Beat It” works beautifully, but it’s hard to accept Jackson as the sort of person...

Emma Stone won the Best Actress Oscar in 2017 for her role as an actress trying to make it big in Damien Chazelle‘s “La La Land.” Stone has also earned two Best Supporting Actress bids, the first in 2015 for “Birdman” and the second for “The Favourite” in 2019. She reteams with the latter’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, for Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things.” The film, which is out in US theaters on Dec. 8, follows Stone as Bella Baxter — a woman brought back to life by a scientist (Willem Dafoe) and subsequently goes on a journey of self-discovery, meeting a variety of people along the way including a lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) and a potential suitor (Ramy Youssef).

Andy Taylor thought that Nov. 5, 2022 was going to be one of the greatest nights of his life. After years of waiting, Duran Duran were finally entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The guitarist had co-founded the band back in 1980 and co-wrote many of their biggest songs, including “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf,” but he hadn’t shared a stage with them since 2006, when old tensions resurfaced during the creation of their aborted album Reportage and they parted ways.

For the tracking week that ended July 20, Taylor Swift achieved the number-one album for the second week in a row on the Billboard 200 as “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” stayed on its perch despite a massive 83% drop in equivalent album units down to 121,000. She also continued her domination of the top 10 with four albums in that uppermost echelon of the chart. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
Swift’s re-recorded “Speak Now” narrowly held off Morgan Wallen‘s “One Thing at a Time,” which achieved 105,000 album units based on its combined album sales, individual track sales, and online streams. Wallen’s album has had six-figure album units in all 20 of its weeks on the chart thus far, extending his record. It took a while, but there’s a new number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart — well, sort of new. Taylor Swift‘s “Midnights” returns to the top spot for its sixth total week but its first week in 2023. It unseated Morgan Wallen‘s “One Thing at a Time,” which had spent 12 consecutive weeks in the lead position. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
“Midnights” achieved a whopping 282,000 equivalent album units for the tracking week that ended on June 1, which is up almost 400% from last week. That’s because on May 26 Swift released two special editions of her album. The “Til Dawn Edition” has 23 tracks, among which are three new ones including “Hits Different” and a remix of “Karma” featuring Ice Spice. And the “Late Night Edition” boasts 21 tracks including “You’re Losing Me (From the Vault).”

Country singer Morgan Wallen remains an unmovable object on the Billboard 200, holding the number-one spot for the 10th week in a row with his latest album “One Thing at a Time.” The 36-track collection achieved 141,000 equivalent album units based on its combined album sales, individual track sales, and online streams — that’s actually up two-percent from last week. Read all about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
Hitting double digits is historic for Wallen, who becomes the first solo male artist to achieve 10 weeks at number-one with back-to-back albums. His previous album, “Dangerous” — which is still at number-five this week, mind you — also spent its first 10 weeks in the top spot. Only four other acts in general have achieve 10 or more weeks with consecutive releases: The Kingston Trio, The Monkees, Whitney Houston, and Adele.

Charlize Theron thinks anyone who opposes drag is a monster.
The “Monster” Oscar winner and “Fast X” star participated in a “Drag Isn’t Dangerous” telethon alongside Elizabeth Banks, Jesse Eisenberg, Billy Eichner, Sarah Silverman, Adam Lambert, Marcia Gay Harden, and more LGBTQ+ allies. Theron vowed to “fuck anybody up” who is against drag queens in response to proposed bills in states like Tennessee, Kentucky, and Montana banning public drag performances.
“We love you, queens. We’re in your corner and we’ve got you,” Theron said in a video. “I will fuck anybody up who’s trying to fuck with anything with you guys. There are so many things that are hurting and, really, killing our kids, and we all know what I’m talking about right now and it ain’t no drag queen.”

Charlize Theron participated in the recent “Drag Isn’t Dangerous” telethon and sent a stern message to conservative lawmakers seeking to ban drag queens from performing: “We love you queens. We’re in your corner and we’ve got you, and I will fuck anybody up who’s trying to fuck with anything with you guys.”
“There are so many things that are hurting and, really, killing our kids, and we all know what I’m talking about right now and it ain’t no drag queen,” Theron said in a video. “If you’ve ever seen a drag queen lip-sync for her life, it only makes you happier, it only make you love more, it makes you a better person,”
“Please support all the great organizations that are out there helping all of this nonsense go away like it should,” the Oscar winner added. “All of these incredibly stupid policies.

It was an especially close call, but Morgan Wallen‘s “One Thing at a Time” managed to spend its ninth consecutive week at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended on May 4. Read all about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
“One Thing at a Time” dropped eight-percent from week to week to achieve another 138,000 equivalent album units based on its combined album sales, individual track sales, and online streams. It’s the first album to spend nine straight weeks at number-one since, well, Wallen’s last album “Dangerous” spent its first 10 on top. But it only barely held on to that number-one spot this week. K-pop band Seventeen‘s “10th Mini Album Fml” debuted at number-two with 135,000 album units powered mostly by traditional sales. It was the bestselling album of the week by far, though “One Thing’s” streaming dominance kept it on top overall.

Top drag stars, LGBTQ celebrities including Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Adam Lambert, and celebrity allies of the queer community banded together Sunday to stage Drag Isn’t Dangerous, a telethon to raise money to combat anti-lgbtq legislation.
As anti-drag and anti-trans bills proliferate across the United States — such as Tennessee’s ban on public drag performances (which has been temporarily blocked by a judge) — the telethon brought in more than $500,000 from 5,000 individual donors. According to the organizers, “all net proceeds from the event will be divided among approved charities (GLAAD, Glsen, Headcount, Black Queer Town Hall, The ACLU Drag Defense Fund, Trans Justice Funding Project, Victory Fund) that support Lgbtqia+ causes and drag performers in need, especially in states where they face discrimination and bans.” The fundraiser, held through GoFundMe, continues through Tuesday.

Exclusive: Starz programming exec Jeff Cooke is set to exit the Lionsgate company.
We’ve learned Cooke, Starz’s SVP of Programming for International Networks, will leave the business this July. The exec has been with Starz owner Lionsgate for a decade and with the U.S. cable network’s international arm since 2018. He was promoted to his current role in January last year.
Starz declined to comment on Cooke’s departure, but we understand he’ll remain with the business until the summer. There is no word on his movements after that.
Cooke’s departure comes four months after Starz International Networks President Superna Kalle stepped down, replaced by EVP of International Networks Darren Nielson, and less than a year after international streaming service Starzplay was rebranded Lionsgate+. In January, we were first with the news Lionsgate International exec Marc Lorber was exiting.

Luke Combs and Chris Stapleton are both past winners of Male Artist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, but in 2023 they could both be usurped by Morgan Wallen. That’s according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center as of this writing.
Wallen leads our forecasts with 6/1 odds. He’s backed by 12 of the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s ACM Awards and 13 of the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ prediction results. It doesn’t hurt that he’s undoubtedly the most commercially successful country artist in the industry right now, with his new album “One Thing at a Time” spending its first six weeks at number-one on the Billboard 200. And while he has a, shall we say, controversial public image,...

Sometimes, the antagonism you see between two characters in a movie isn't acting. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" is one of the most infamous examples thereof; their feud has inspired books, podcasts, and even a mini-series.
In the film (directed by Robert Aldrich), they play the Hudson sisters, Jane (Davis) and Blanche (Crawford). The limelight has moved past them both; Jane was a child star whose talents didn't last to adulthood while Blanche had a film career before being paralyzed in a car crash. Jane has to dote on the incapacitated Blanche, only furthering the resentment. There's a clear meta-textual undercurrent; Davis and Crawford were not considered "bankable" as women in their fifties, and there's no industry as hostile to middle-aged women as Hollywood.
Davis/Crawford's infighting began before the film even started production. According to Davis, Crawford initially suggested she play Jane and Davis play Blanche,...

Davis/Crawford's infighting began before the film even started production. According to Davis, Crawford initially suggested she play Jane and Davis play Blanche,...

Weekly music show Top of the Pops counted down the UK pop charts, jam-packed with performances from bands and solo artists whose singles had been selling well that week. It ran on the BBC from 1964 to 2006, seeing off seven prime ministers, 12 major military conflicts, and three separate Sugababes line-ups. As the decades passed, viewers watched the musical, cultural and fashion tastes of a nation shifting through the lenses of their musical heroes.
But as those things changed, so did the ways in which we experienced music. It began with MTV and VH1, and continued with the proliferation of portable entertainment tech; the evolution of the internet, downloads and streaming; and our ability to listen to or watch whatever we wanted, whenever and wherever we pleased. In this futuristic soundscape, Top of the Pops became an anachronism. The show still managed to occupy a warm niche in the public consciousness thanks...

Kardinal Offishall still remembers a time when nobody wanted to hire him. And he means nobody.
“Everybody turned me down: Gap, Foot Locker,” the Toronto-born rapper and music executive tells Et Canada. “The only thing I never applied for was McDonald’s, and that’s because there’s no way I was going to work at McDonald’s. But everybody fronted on me, so you know, it was music or bust.”
Thankfully, the music thing turned out alright. Today, Offishall is a Canadian hip hop god, gifting us some of the nation’s most groundbreaking and unimpeachable hits, from the Rascalz’s 1998 classic “Northern Touch” (which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year) to 2008’s “Dangerous” with Akon, which made him the first Canuck rapper to land on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
At this year’s Juno Awards on March 13, Offishall will lead viewers through a celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip hop,...

Morgan Wallen has become one of country music’s biggest stars of the past few years, riding his Everyman persona and brooding, whiskey-soaked country-rock songs to success not just on country radio, but in the pop sphere. But he’s caused controversy along the way, too. He was dropped from Saturday Night Live in late 2020 after being caught flouting pandemic guidelines. In February of the following year, a video emerged of the singer using a racial slur, which caused the Nashville machine to briefly withdraw its support of his music.

R&b star Sza spent her 10th week at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended on February 23. “Sos” achieved 87,000 equivalent album units based on its combined record sales, individual track sales, and online streams. That’s down just seven-percent week to week. It’s now one of just eight albums since 2010 to spend 10 weeks or more on top. And it’s the first R&b album since the “Bodyguard” soundtrack (1992-1993) to do so. That number was enough to keep “Trustfall” down at number-two. That new album launched with 74,500 album units, most of which came from traditional album sales. It’s Pink’s ninth album...

What more can be said about Sza‘s dominance of the Billboard 200 albums chart? Her “Sos” holds on to the top spot for the ninth nonconsecutive week for the tracking week that ended on February 16. That means it has spend nine of its first 10 weeks of release on the chart at number-one. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
“Sos” dipped seven-percent to 93,000 equivalent album units based on the combination of its traditional sales, individual track sales, and online streams. But that was still enough for it to become the first R&b album by a woman to spend nine weeks or more at number-one since Mariah Carey‘s self-title debut album spent 11 straight weeks in the lead position more than 30 years ago.
