Clark Backo, best known for “The Changeling” and “Letterkenny,” has joined the cast of Sony and Marvel’s “Venom 3.”
The Tom Hardy-starring threequel, which is set to hit theaters on Nov. 8, also features Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor in undisclosed roles. Similarly, character details for Backo are being kept under wraps.
Kelly Marcel helms the antihero movie in her feature directorial debut, and wrote the screenplay from a story she developed with Hardy. The duo, who also developed the first two “Venom” installments, return to produce the film alongside Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker.
Reps for Sony and Backo did not immediately respond to request for comment on her casting.

Stuntman-turned-director Derek Barnes has expanded his 2016 short Walking Supply into a feature, which made its world premiere at this year’s Blood in the Snow film festival.
Walking Supply opens with a bang as the Russian offices of an international corporation are raided by armed men of unknown origin who kidnap several of the staff. The men end up in a labour camp, and the women probably have an even worse fate. They’re told if their company pays for their release, they’ll be freed. Until then, work until you drop if you don’t want to starve.

Exclusive: Hulu is joining the latest round of programming purges.
The streamer is pulling off a number of additional series from its service as part of Disney’s wider plan to cut streaming costs.
The company revealed last month in an SEC filing that it would take $1.5B-$1.8B in write-downs associated with removing streaming programming from its platforms and expects to remove from more its direct-to-consumer platforms in the third quarter with another $400M in impairment charges.
Deadline now can reveal some of those titles.
They include Alaska Daily and The Company You Keep, which were both canceled at ABC after one season. Both shows would normally have stayed on the service until September, or later if Hulu had struck a longer deal, but are to be removed earlier next month.
Deadline understands that, going forward, ABC series canceled after one season, as well as specials, likely will fall under a similar strategy.

After Disney unceremoniously removed dozens of titles from Disney+ and Hulu at the end of May, the company on Friday recorded via an SEC filing a “$1.5 billion impairment charge in its fiscal third quarter financial statements to adjust the carrying value of these content assets to fair value.”
And that might not be the end of it – according to the same filing the company could incur charges up to $400 million “related to produced content.”

It was a baffling move given how closely connected many of the series and movies were to already-established Disney IP, making them an odd fit to shop to other streamers or linear platforms. Disney made it official with an SEC filing after the markets closed Friday, confirming it would take $1.5 billion in write-downs associated with removing streaming programming from its platforms.
The number came in on the low end of a range provided by the company last month when it released its quarterly earnings. (Read the new filing Here.) Like other media companies, Disney has been looking to trim expenses in the once-fevered streaming arena, and removing programming has been one means of reaching that goal. Rival service Max, the outlet recently rebranded by Warner Bros Discovery, has also drawn scrutiny for shedding a number of high-profile titles, though the removals are part of the larger reckoning with the daunting economics of streaming. The long-promised nirvana for consumers of a nearly endless storehouse of available titles has collided with the reality of how much that costs to sustain, both in terms of technology...

Disney is going there, you guys.
As previously teased during the company's quarter one earnings call, the company is purging several titles from its streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu.
The practice has become common in recent months, with HBO Max leading the charge, wiping several projects from existence.
Undoubtedly, fans and creatives are struggling with the concept, but maybe some of the affected shows could show up elsewhere.
"We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion," Disney's chief financial officer, Christine McCarthy, said during the earnings call.
Westworld, The Nevers, and other HBO fare popped back up on Fast services shortly after the controversial decision.
But for some shows, this could be the death knell that could be the difference whether new fans find them down the line.

Disney did a little (late) spring cleaning of its streaming services this week, removing several properties from Disney+ and Hulu. Among those that will go on May 26 include some high profile recent shows like “Willow,” “Y: The Last Man,” “Dollface,” and “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.” What makes this troubling for many home viewers who may have been fans (or even stans!) of the affected programs is that, in most cases, there are no Blu-ray/DVD options. In the old days you could always hit record on your Vcr to build a personal library, but it’s not so easy to capture material from streaming—and the whole point of streaming is not needing to do that, right?
As per The Verge, Disney’s cost-cutting is due to a reduction in Disney+ subscribers, to the tune of 4 million in 2023. While the company will have to pay a “content impairment charge” of over $1.5 billion,...

Well, this is just depressing. It was reported last week that Disney would start removing content from their streaming services, and the first casualties have been revealed. The dozens of TV shows and specials from Disney+ and Hulu that will be removed on May 26th include Willow, Big Shot, Y: The Last Man, and many more. Considering that Willow premiered on Disney+ less than a year ago… it hurts.
Related Willow: Jon Kasdan wouldn’t say the series has been cancelled, it’s just on hiatus

When John Landgraf speaks, TV reporters don’t just listen — they frantically transcribe.
Let’s be clear: Landgraf is regarded as the genius television executive in Hollywood. When he speaks at the twice-annual TCAs (Television Critics Association), the ballroom is packed with faces that other executives will never see looking back up at them. His professorial preparation, droll delivery, and swift speech pattern bring many, many words — and no fluff.
Instead Landgraf delivers news, a regular “Peak TV” (the term he coined) update, and thoughtful opinions on granular topics and the industry at large. He doesn’t dodge, he keeps spin to a minimum. A Landgraf executive session is must-see for TV critics, many of whom date back to the days Landgraf made “Friends” the staple of Must-See TV. Regardless of age, every critic in that hotel ballroom has disproportionately rewarded FX series with placement on their Top 10 lists, another...

Dawn Olivieri can’t ignore the signs that led her to joining Taylor Sheridan’s universe.
The House of Lies actress, who has appeared in roles on the big (American Hustle, Bright) and small screens (The Vampire Diaries, Heroes, Seal Team) decided to leave city life behind and adopted a rural life in Arkansas back when the pandemic hit.
“It’s a little bit woo-woo,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter of life ultimately imitating art. “The second I moved here, I got all of this Western world work, which I had never gotten before. No period pieces, none of that. So, it’s pretty trippy.”
Soon after her lifestyle change (“I run a goat herd and goat babies, horse and mules. I’m picking up hay bales,” she describes), she got cast in the second season of Nat Geo’s anthology hit The Hot Zone. “I got a call, and they offered that to me.

“One of the things we loved about the first season is that it was a bit of a procedural, a bit of a horror story,” declares co-creator and co-showrunner Brian Peterson about revisiting the high-stakes tension of the acclaimed “Hot Zone” anthology series, particularly in a time when we are living within a shared experience of a real-lie pandemic. “it really, at the end of the day was a character study of these people caught in this impossible situation,” he explains, adding for our recent Q&a, “what ‘Anthrax’ gave us was another one of those situations.”

The Hot Zone: Anthrax star Daniel Dae Kim said that filming the National Geographic drama during the pandemic “was one of the hardest on-location experiences I’ve ever had in my career.” However, he said that quarantine and closed restaurants helped him and co-star Tony Goldwyn tap into the paranoia and caution of the post-9/11 anthrax attacks in 2001.

In TV, as in film, everything needs to be a franchise, even if it means attempting to franchise such nebulous frameworks as “Authorities look for famous killers” or “Notorious stalkers.”
It’s no surprise, then, that National Geographic decided to take its 2019 miniseries The Hot Zone, based on a Richard Preston book that was very specifically about hemorrhagic fevers, and turn it into a disease-of-the-year format. And it’s funny in a not-so-funny way that NatGeo’s The Hot Zone: Anthrax actually feels less like the first season of The Hot Zone and more like a lackluster blending of ...

Daniel Dae Kim has been acting for three decades, starting his own production company, 3Ad, eight years ago. But his turn on National Geographic’s “The Hot Zone: Anthrax,” which premieres Nov. 28, marks the first time he has taken leading man status. As FBI agent Matthew Ryker on the anthology series, based on the real-life anthrax terrorist threats that began in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, Kim is the face of the government organization in addition to the face of the show — which he notes is a “significant step in representation.”
“The Hot Zone” showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders have said you helped them shape the character of Matthew Ryker. Why was it important to have that agency, even without a producer title?
It’s always nice when an actor can have, as you say, a sense of agency in their character because we’re the ones who...

National Geographic’s The Hot Zone anthology series delves into real-life stories of deadly outbreaks and the heroes on the frontlines in Anthrax. Season 2 is inspired by the shocking true events that occurred after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001. A second strike: the anthrax letters, killed five people and caused panic across the nation. The targets were media figures and politicians – but they weren’t the only ones exposed to the deadly poison. This six-episode limited series follows lead investigator, FBI Special Agent and scientist Matthew Ryker as he tracks down the killer. The character is an amalgamation of the hundreds of agents who worked against the clock to solve the case and prevent more deaths. “The investigation took a lot of twists and turns and wasn’t wrapped up in a nice little bow,” Kim tells us. He was fascinated by the ...

Entering adolescence around the time of 9/11 was interesting, especially as I look back on it as an adult. It’s as if I can pinpoint the moment I knew what “anxiety” was. So when anthrax started getting mailed to random people — or at least that’s what I remember being told — that anxiety went up 1,000-fold. If you asked me today if they ever identified a culprit, I’d assume they never did, and also that they never had a suspect and that the person, like the Zodiac, just vanished into the ether.
National Geographic’s second season of “The Hot Zone” attempts to answer that question, or at least recreate what happened in those few weeks, months, and years after 9/11, when anthrax started working its way through the U.S. postal service. Starting three weeks after 9/11, the look and structure of the season feel akin to “Zero Dark Thirty,...

From Amazon’s remake of Utopia to CBS All Access’ adaptation of The Stand to FX on Hulu’s take on Y: The Last Man, audiences haven’t been eager to embrace the myriad TV projects focused on the aftermath of fictional global pandemics — shows that had the bad fate to be developed before, but released after, we experienced the real thing. Netflix’s Sweet Tooth at least did well enough to be renewed for a second season, and we’ll see what happens with HBO Max’s upcoming Station Eleven or the second installment of Nat Geo’s pandemic-of-the-year anthology The Hot Zone.
