More change in the writers room at General Hospital.
Patrick Mulcahey — who was promoted in January to help fill the void left by co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor — is no longer on the soap’s head-writing team, Deadline has confirmed.
Elizabeth Korte, who was upped alongside Mulcahey, will become the sole head writer for now. Korte has been a part of the Gh family since 1992.
Mulcahey is a longtime vet of daytime dramas, having started in the biz on Search For Tomorrow. He wrote for Loving, Santa Barbara, Guiding Light and The Bold and the Beautiful. He first started penning episodes for Gh in 1996.
Episodes that he crafted with Korte will air through mid-summer. A spokeswoman for the show declined comment.
In December, Gh took the prize for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series. It also racked up four Emmys in the acting categories and another in the Outstanding Directing Team category.

Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.

After seven long years following the one-two, varied punch of Midnight Special and Loving, director Jeff Nichols is finally back. The Bikeriders––bringing together the stellar cast of Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, Norman Reedus, and Mike Faist––is set in the 1960s and follows a decade in the lives of a motorcycle club. Following its Telluride premiere, the film was dropped by 20th Century Studios who sold it off Focus Features, who moved it to a prime summer release date. As Butler’s latest performance hits theaters this weekend, a new trailer has now arrived.
Caleb Hammond said in his Telluride review, “Using photographer Danny Lyon’s iconic The Bikeriders’ imagery as a jumping-off point, Jeff Nichols’ latest feature imagines a fictionalized Chicago motorcycle club, the Vandals. Motorcycle club culture might be a distinctly American phenomenon, but Nichols casts two Brits in the lead,...

Austin Butler and Jodie Comer are ready to drive off into the sunset together — that is, unless Butler’s biker gang boss, played by Tom Hardy, gets in the way first.
The core trio behind Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” drive the motorcycle-centric drama set in the 1960s. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic book of photography, “The Bikeriders” centers on the subculture of the era’s motorcycle riders. Comer plays Kathy, a strong-willed member of the Vandals gang who’s married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny (Butler). Kathy recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders led by Johnny (Hardy) and later turning into a dangerous crime-driven gang.
Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus also star.

Apparently screenwriters Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach didn’t do quite Ken-ough to get “Barbie” considered as an original work for this year’s Oscars, as the candy-colored saga will hereforth only be considered by voters in Adapted Screenplay category, in a decision confirmed Wednesday by the Academy.
The determination was made by the Writers Branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and when Oscar nomination voting begins on Jan. 11, voters will only be permitted to consider “Barbie” in the set category.
The film will join a fairly crowded field of strong contenders of adapted works, including “Oppenheimer,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” and “All of Us Strangers” just for starters. It is assumed that Warner Bros., the studio behind “Barbie,” assumed the Original Screenplay would be less competitive and the property is based more on IP than a previously-produced work.

Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster comedy “Barbie” has been deemed an adapted screenplay by the Writers Branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, despite campaigning for original screenplay, Variety has exclusively learned.
When official Oscar nomination voting opens Thursday, Jan. 11, eligible voting members of the branch will only be able to cast votes for the script written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach in adapted screenplay.
The film tells the story of Barbie (Margot Robbie), who suffers an identity crisis in Barbie World, leading her on a quest with her beau Ken (Ryan Gosling) to the real world to seek the answers regarding her existence.

Ryan Gosling is one of the biggest contenders for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig‘s smash hit “Barbie.” The Warner Bros. movie follows Margot Robbie‘s titular Barbie as she leaves Barbie Land for the real world in search of answers after suffering an existential crisis. Gosling’s performance as Ken has brought him plenty of plaudits, leading to a strong case for Best Supporting Actor in this year’s Oscars race.
However, this isn’t the first Oscars race Gosling has been in as he’s received two Academy Award nominations before. Let’s take a look back at them.
Gosling was first nominated in 2007 when he received a Best Actor notice for “Half Nelson,” which follows Gosling as a junior high school teacher with a drug habit. Gosling’s teacher forms a friendship with one of his students...

For me, Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders is emblematic of Disney’s big content problem. They were set to put out the star-studded biker flick in time for a 2023 awards run, but about a month ago, they decided to wash their hands of the finished film, with Nichols’ usual studio, Focus Features, swooping in to pick it up. It’s very strange to me that Disney, which owns the studio (20th Century Films) that was set to distribute it, didn’t see any potential in a movie starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Michael Shannon. Given how many flops they’ve had recently, why not take a chance at an upscale adult audience with something a little different?
At any rate, their loss in Focus’s gain, with the studio now slating it for a June 24, 2024 release. The studio has had a lot of luck with summer counter-programming over the years,...

New Regency’s Jeff Nichols movie The Bikeriders, which we were told Focus Features took over from Disney, has set a release date of June 21, 2024.
The only other title currently scheduled on that weekend is an untitled movie from Universal.
The movie starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy and Norman Reedus, follows the rise of a midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals. Seen through the lives of its members, the club evolves over the course of a decade from a gathering place for local outsiders into a more sinister gang, threatening the original group’s unique way of life.
Bikeriders made its world premiere at Telluride and notched 85% fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
20th Century Studios was originally set to release the crime drama last weekend, Dec. 1-3, however, the actors strike this past fall got in the way of the movie raising its profile further.

A major Virgin River mystery has been solved. The two-part Christmas special dropped on Netflix on Nov. 30, and it revealed the answer to the question fans have been asking for months: Who is Mel Monroe’s biological father? The man in question – played by John Allen Nelson – wasn’t anyone we’ve seen before on the show, but if his face looks familiar, there’s a good reason. Nelson’s long career includes roles in a popular soap opera, an iconic 1990s TV show, and a brief appearance in one of the most popular sitcoms in TV history.

We will probably never see a motion picture phenomenon like George Lucas' "Star Wars" ever again. The United States was still shaking off its Vietnam War hangover in the mid-1970s, and while the top filmmakers of the New Hollywood were mostly attracted to edgy material that explored its characters' damaged psyches, audiences were in the mood to escape. Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" offered emphatic proof of this mindset during the summer of 1975 when it briefly became the highest-grossing movie in U.S. box office history.
Lucas' space opera was an altogether different kind of sensation. The briskly paced yarn about a young farm boy who discovers he might be the galaxy's savior ignited the imaginations of kids the world over, and Lucas deepened the viewer's immersion by employing an array of pioneering special effects and wildly inventive creature/production designs. "Star Wars" was world-building on a scale that matched "The Wizard of Oz,...

When we think about the cultural upheaval of the United States in the 1960s as depicted on screen, the focus tends to be on one of three places: Los Angeles, New York, and the American South. These places were where change regarding politics, race relations, societal mores, and art were most visible. But change was happening all over the country. It just was manifesting itself in different ways, even amongst groups of people you wouldn't expect to be going through any kind of evolution.

Zee-Sony Merger Back On Track
The merger of Zee Entertain Enterprises and Sony’s Indian arm looks to be back on track after an order banning Punit Goenka from managing the new entity was lifted yesterday. The merger of Zee and Culver Max Entertainment was given the go-ahead in August, but the merger has run into several problems. The India Securities and Exchange Board had barred Goenka and his father, Zee founder Subhash Chandra, from the boardrooms of listed companies for a year over allegations of insider trading. However, the Securities Appellate Tribunal has overturned that decision, paving the way for the $10B merger to go ahead and for Goenka to resume his role as MD and CEO of Zee. Sony and Zee have been planning the union for over two years now.

Ava DuVernay’s moving drama “Origin,” which tells the story of author Isabel Wilkerson’s journey to write her famous nonfiction novel “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent,” is the latest film to be making the switch from an adapted screenplay run, to original. Deemed an original screenplay by the Writers Guild of America, the announcement comes after Variety reported “Barbie” from Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and “The Bikeriders” by Jeff Nichols, were also deemed original by the WGA. In addition to the aforementioned films, DuVernay’s script will also compete for one of the five coveted Oscar slots against other top-tier contenders such as “The Holdovers” from David Hemingson and “Past Lives” from Celine Song.
“Origin” boasts an all-star cast including Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard”), Jon Bernthal and Niecy Nash-Betts.

Actor Bryan Cranston had an interesting link with Scream star Hayden Panettiere before the two officially met. Ironically, Panettiere would audition for a role in Cranston’s iconic comedy series Malcolm in the Middle. But Panettiere’s looks posed a problem.
Hayden Panettiere was the best actor for her ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ role, but she was too pretty Bryan Cranston | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Cranston was already familiar with the Panettiere family before the Heroes actor was even born. Panettere’s mother, Leslie Vogel, played Cranston’s wife in the long-running 1980s soap opera Loving. Decades later, Cranston would end up auditioning Vogel’s daughter Panettiere in an episode of Malcolm in the Middle he was directing.
During the process, Panettiere impressed Cranston and the show’s producer with her acting ability. But Cranston worried that Panettiere didn’t have the right look for the role she was trying out for.

At the end of the 20th century, broadcast networks were still giving the green light to daytime dramas, including Port Charles, a half-hour spinoff of ABC’s long-running hit General Hospital. The series, created by Wendy Riche, lasted only six years — Gh has already run ten times as long — but it had made a lasting impression with soap fans by the time it ended two decades ago. The challenge for soap operas in the 1990s was to hook younger viewers when VCRs and cable channels offered them more options than whatever their parents were watching on TV, as the Los Angeles Times reported at the time. And the failures of ABC’s The City, a retooling of the earlier soap Loving, and NBC’s Sunset Beach, a daytime drama from Aaron Spelling, showed how tricky a proposition that was. So ABC pinned its attention and its marketing dollars on a spinoff that would,...

Writer-director Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” with Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy, made a splash with festival-goers at the recent Telluride Film Festival. 20th Century Studios has revealed to Variety exclusively that the film will be campaigned for best original screenplay for the upcoming awards season, despite being inspired by the 1968 photo and interview book of the same name.

Jeff Nichols, who had previously made the apocalyptic drama “Take Shelter,” the Mark Twain-y “Mud,” and the bold, John Carpenter-indebted “Midnight Special” along with the Oscar-nominated period drama “Loving,” says his new film “The Bikeriders” is unlike anything else he’s previously made. While the earlier movies were about emotion, this new film is built around, as he says, a “feeling.”
“For me, emotions are like this very specific personal emotional reaction to a thing, and this is different than that,” Nichols explained to TheWrap. And he’ll soon be taking that feeling home, as he premieres “The Bikeriders” on his home turf.
Fresh off of its rapturously received debut at the Telluride Film Festival (and ahead of its Dec. 1 release date), filmmaker Jeff Nichols will be bringing his brand-new film “The Bikeriders” to his home state of Arkansas. The Arkansas Cinema Society and the Arkansas Museum of...

After 2017’s Loving Vincent and Toronto International Film Festival world premiere The Peasants, it is clear that Dk Welchman and Hugh Welchman have developed a gorgeously distinct, personal, ludicrously involved style of filmmaking. Loving Vincent, a clever biography of Vincent Van Gogh, was sold as “the world’s first fully painted feature film,” and indeed it was. The painting process returns in The Peasants, an adaptation of Władysław Reymont’s early 1900s, Nobel Prize–winning novel. A staggering 40,000 frames of film were painted to bring The Peasants to life.
That is an incredible achievement, one that should give the filmmakers and all involved in the production a sense of pride. Unfortunately, watching the finished product inspires difficult questions. Was it worth it? Does the final product warrant the years of painstaking labor involved? Both questions must be answered with a firm no. The Peasants is a visually breathtaking, dramatically inert misfire.

Jeff Nichols was just at the Telluride Film Festival last weekend for the world premiere of his upcoming film, “The Bikeriders.” And while he was there, the director hopped on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to talk about his new movie, failed pitches for projects like “Aquaman,” and other topics. That includes “Alien Nation,” a long-gestating project of Nichols’ that never panned out (and is the reason for seven years between “The Bikeriders” and 2016’s “Loving” and “Midnight Special“) but came closer to being made than anyone realizes.

Jeff Nichols is enjoying some love right now thanks to the acclaim for his latest, The Bikeriders at the Telluride Film Festival and spawning a sequel due out this December.
But way back in 2014, among the emails unearthed by the infamous Sony hack were messages between studio folk about Warner Bros. considering Nichols – then the director of Take Shelter and Mud to handle the movie.
According to Nichols, who talked to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, his concept would have been quite different…
"I still have scenes from Aquaman in my head that would’ve been good," Nichols says. "They would’ve been quite different from the film that was made. It wasn’t ever feasible… I liked the older Aquaman, like when he had a harpoon for a hand. He was a fallen king and his son had died. He was in mourning. Obviously from this...

This week saw the release of the trailer for The Bikeriders. The new biker drama comes from Jeff Nichols, whose credits include heavy indies like Mud and Take Shelter. In the famed Sony email hack of 2014, it was revealed that before hiring James Wan, Warner Bros. had been in talks with Nichols for helming the Jason Momoa Aquaman solo film. Wan’s vision proved to be a successful one, as the 2018 Aquaman film would gross $1.1 billion globally. However, Nichols, a veteran of dark character drama, reveals what his own vision entailed.
According to Variety, Nichols outlined some of his ideas on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while promoting the premiere of The Bikeriders at the Telluride Film Festival. The director admits that his concept may not have grossed a billion like Wan’s. “I still have scenes from [Aquaman] in my head that would’ve been good. They would’ve been...

One of the big reveals to come out of the infamous 2014 Sony email hack was that Warner Bros. had been in talks with indie director Jeff Nichols to helm its “Aquaman” movie starring Jason Momoa. Nichols was coming off acclaimed back-to-back dramas “Take Shelter” and “Mud” at the time. His involvement with “Aquaman” did not move beyond talks, but now Nichols is opening up a bit about what went into his failed pitch.
Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast from the Telluride Film Festival, where his latest directorial effort, “The Bikeriders,” world premiered to rave reviews and Oscar buzz, Nichols explained why his pitch for “Aquaman” was never going to be the $1 billion movie Warner Bros. ended up getting.

"I thought I could change him, you know?" 20th Century Studios has unveiled the first official trailer for The Bikeriders, the latest film from acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols, his first feature hitting theaters since Loving in 2016. Glad to see him back. This recently premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival this past weekend, and it's next playing at the London Film Festival coming up this fall. The film follows the rise of a Midwestern motorcycle club (a fictional one) through the lives of its members. The cast, most of whom did their own riding on an array of period-correct bikes, also includes Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus, along with lead actors Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy. One hell of a cast!! From writer-director Jeff Nichols, 20th Century Studios & New Regency, The Bikeriders is a furious drama following the rise of a fictional 1960s Midwestern motorcycle...

Some films merely offer you a clockwork plot. Others, like Jeff Nichols’ smokin’ cool “The Bikeriders,” whisk you away with a roar of mood and atmosphere.
That’s no surprise coming from the versatile director of “Mud,” “Loving” and “Midnight Special,” all seemingly different (but equally wondrous) films with one common denominator: a precise, wistful sense of place and tone. As soon as we spot Austin Butler on a bar stool sporting a badass Vandals Chicago jacket on his back, that exacting disposition is evident here, too. With appealingly greased and molded hair, Butler looks like he just stepped away from the “Elvis” set for a swift cigarette break, wearing the invincible aura of a movie star like it’s his second skin. Vandals is the name of the motorbike clique Butler’s terse Benny is a part of. And to get him to take that jacket off—like a...
