The X-Men are one step closer to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own movie.
Screenwriter Michael Lesslie (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) is in talks with Marvel Studios to write the first “X-Men” movie since the mutant superhero franchise was acquired by Disney in its purchase of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
As with every Marvel Studios film, Kevin Feige will produce, but nothing else about the film has been set, including director or cast. Marvel has been slowly seeding the MCU with mutants over the past two years, including brief mentions in 2022’s “Ms. Marvel” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and appearances of the X-Men’s namesake and leader, Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), in an alternative universe in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and of Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in the post-credits sequence of 2023’s “The Marvels.”

“I Saw the TV Glow” director Jane Schoenbrun finally celebrated their second feature at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, April 24, in partnership with Rooftop Films. But “I Saw the TV Glow” first premiered back in January at Sundance, under the banner of A24, and with Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s production company Fruit Tree.
“I sent it to [Fruit Tree] and a couple other people, and they were like, ‘Hey, we wanna work with you,'” Schoenbrun told IndieWire. “Then I got a call from Emma Stone who was like, ‘Thank you so much for your business,’ and I was like, ‘You’re welcome!'”
The visually striking film follows two teens who are obsessed with a disturbing young adult TV show that, once canceled, starts to bleed into reality for the characters. David Ehrlich wrote in IndieWire’s review that the film “marries the queer radicality...

Now You See Me is arguably one of the most underrated heist-thriller franchises of the past decade: despite its high production budgets, star-studded ensemble cast, and absolute commercial success at the global box office, the films have barely been mentioned in the media and on social media platforms nearly 8 years after the release of the second installment.
However, from 2020 to 2023, Lionsgate has been actively releasing information about the upcoming sequel, teasing fans of the film series with updates on the production process. And now, just over a week ago, the media giant announced that Now You See Me 3 is already in post-production, and with that came exciting details about the upcoming cast.
What makes this news so exciting is that Lionsgate will be correcting a mistake that disappointed audiences with the release of the second film, as one of the central and certainly incredibly memorable characters was not able to reprise their role.

Magician heist sequel Now You See Me 3 – in the works for years – is finally set to begin filming in the next six months according to star Jesse Eisenberg.
Proving that time itself is a dark illusion, it’s now over a decade since the original Now You See Me materialised in cinemas. Responding that he’s read the script, Eisenberg told the outlet that “Hopefully it will happen in the next six months,” and added that “it’s really great.”

The film was written by Seth Grahame-Smith, and will reportedly be set several decades prior to the events of the most recent Star Trek franchise starring Chris Pine.
Star Trek will mark Haynes’ feature film debut. He previously directed six of the 10 episodes in Andor’s first season, as well as two Black Mirror episodes, including the Star Trek-inspired “USS Callister.”
Speaking of the Pine-led franchise, the long-gestating fourth film is still in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The move recent installment, Star Trek Beyond, was released in 2016.
All that’s in addition to the numerous Star Trek television series residing on Paramount+, including Strange New Worlds, Discovery, Lower Decks, and Picard.

Back in 2016, Lionsgate gave the green light to a third Now You See Me film — before the second one had even hit theaters. Now that the sequel is out (and seven years old), the production company is finally moving forward with Now You See Me 3.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake announced the news during an investors call this week. He also confirmed that Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer was onboard to helm the project.
Drake described the forthcoming installment as a “reimagining” of the first two films, with production set to begin next spring.
The first Now You See Me, released in 2013, starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, and Morgan Freeman. Directed by Louis Leterrier, the film centered on a group of justice seeking, bank robbing magicians being followed by the FBI. Jon M. Chu helmed the sequel, which arrived three years later.

Fans of the action and heist genres have something to look forward to, as two popular franchises are getting ready to release their next installments. Here is what we know so far about Now You See Me 3 and John Wick 5.
Now You See Me 3
The Now You See Me franchise follows a group of magicians known as the Four Horsemen, who use their skills to pull off elaborate heists and expose corruption. The first two movies, released in 2013 and 2016, were box office hits, earning over $680 million worldwide1.
A third movie was announced in 2015, before the release of the second one, and was supposed to be shot back-to-back with it. However, due to various factors, including the busy schedules of the cast and the studio’s concerns over the profitability, the production was delayed2.

Jon Feltheimer, CEO of the first media company to report quarterly earnings since SAG-AFTRA struck a deal with studios, said Thursday that he’s so pleased that “we can now all get back to making great content for a global audience.”
Speaking to Wall Streeter at the top of a call after the company’s second-quarter numbers, CFO Jimmy Barge put the impact of the strike on fiscal 2024 at about $30 million total — less than originally forecast, almost all at the television group and mostly in the September quarter. There could be a lingering $15 million-$20 million hit going forward around episodic delivery and increased costs for productions that had to shutter during the work stoppage.
Execs weighed in on how the company is situated as production restarts everywhere all at once, and the impact on costs longer term.

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sales agents and distributors are convening in Santa Monica this week in the hopes of reconnecting with buyers and kicking off deal discussions at the American Film Market.
After an underwhelming Toronto Film Festival, which saw little deal activity, there’s hope that a few of the starry packages being shopped at AFM will get picked up. But given the climate in Hollywood, many projects won’t officially hit the market until February at the European Film Market in Berlin. The marketplace is not only strained by the strike but the shifting appetites and belt-tightening at the major studios and streamers. At the same time, the return of buyers from China to AFM after several years away is seen as a positive sign.

2023’s American Film Market may be shaping up for “a rather quiet year,” says Martin Moszkowicz, chairman of the executive board at Germany’s Constantin Film. That said, Moszkowicz will stay in Los Angeles for around 10 days. “We have so much business there – and much of it is not related directly to the market,” he says.
That seems very natural for one of Europe’s not only biggest but most ambitious and successful production-distribution companies, producer of “Resident Evil,” which has diversified fast, consolidating a robust domestic production-distribution business while shaping major plays for the international market and ramping up TV revenues.
Moszkowicz hits the AFM just weeks after “Dear Child: Limited Series” has hit Netflix’s Top 10 of most-watched non-English language TV series in the global streamer’s history. For 2024, Constantin has “Hagen von Tronje,” a revisionist retelling of the Nibelungen saga, which weighs in as one of its biggest movies ever.

The Now You See Me films brought a new twist on the heist movie concept by making the team a group of magicians who were able to use their sleight-of-hand expertise in their plans. Though the films haven’t broken the box office, they have become a humbly successful franchise from Lionsgate, and both movies have been able to showcase an incredible ensemble cast. The director of action films such as this summer’s Fast X, Louis Leterrier, helmed both movies and brought a certain amount of fun with some of the more outrageous logic. However, Ruben Fleischer, who directed the movie’s stars Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg in the Zombieland movies, will be stepping in the director’s position for the third entry.

With The Great Escaper in UK theaters and earning rave reviews, Michael Caine has decided to call it a day on his long, storied career, confirming that he’s now officially retired. He confirmed the news on BBC Radio (excerpted by Deadline) saying,
“I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well I am now,” adding, “I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews … What am I going to do that will beat this?”
Previously, Caine had hinted that The Great Escaper, in which he co-stars with the late Glenda Jackson, would be his final bow. He said as much to The Telegraph.
“I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that,” Caine said about getting up in years and his body no longer cooperating. Caine says he used a walking stick on the set of Oliver Parker’s new film,...

Lionsgate has unveiled its first quarter financial results as talks continue with multiple bidders on a possible sale or spinoff of the premium cable and streaming platform Starz or its studio business.
But a potential transaction that separates Lionsgate and Starz, which Wall Street has anticipated for well over a year, has now been pushed to early in 2024 after the company unveiled an acquisition of producer Entertainment One. “With the impact of the eOne acquisition on regulatory approvals, uncertainties surrounding the strike and our efforts to create the most efficient capital structure within a disruptive marketplace, we anticipate that the separation will now take place in the first quarter of calendar 2024,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told analysts during an after-market call.

The 2017 “The Mummy” reboot box “was probably the biggest failure of my life,” its director, co-writer and producer Alex Kurtzman said of the Tom Cruise box office bomb, but one that ultimately improved his skills as a filmmaker.
In a Friday conversation on the “Bingeworthy” podcast, Kurtzman — who is now helming Showtime’s sci-fi series “The Man Who Fell to Earth” — reflected on the critical and commercial disaster, which was originally set to launch Universal’s cinematic Dark Universe. While he is set to produce a slew of films — including “Now You See Me 3,” “Van Helsing” and several untitled classic projects about Dracula, Frankenstein and the Hunchback of Notre Dame — he hasn’t directed a feature since 2017.
“I tend to subscribe to the point of view that you learn nothing from your successes, and you learn everything from your failures,” Kurtzman said. “And that was probably the biggest failure of my life,...

An Oscar winner for both “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “The Cider House Rules,” the 88-year-old screen icon confessed that he attempted not to blink because he thought it would make his performances more mesmerizing onscreen.
As Caine told Mirror, the veteran star of more than 130 films picked up a tip from the book “Teach Yourself Acting.” He said, “One thing that stuck in my mind was, ‘Don’t blink. You must never blink’. “For the next eight years, I walked around trying not to blink. People around me, my mother and everybody, thought I had gone nuts.”
He added, “They thought I was a psychopath. I used to frighten the life out of people.

Lionsgate and Starz are ready to ramp up production in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“This is going to be a sellers’ market for some time to come because a lot of new content has not been made,” said Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns on Wednesday at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference. “We’re ramping up very, very quickly.”
“As long as we can shoot product safely, we are going to shoot as much good product as possible,” Burns added. “There’s going to be an awful lot of demand.”
The executive noted that the company has been ramping up film and television production in Atlanta, Los Angeles and Bulgaria, where it recently completed “The Devil’s Light” and will shoot the horror movie “Cobweb” next week. Nicolas Cage’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” is slated to begin production soon.

The top two Lionsgate executives have told shareholders that the media conglomerate is poised to thrive amid the post-pandemic environment.
“We had a strong and successful year moving our company forward in fiscal 2020 despite the extraordinary challenges of the global pandemic, creating lasting and incremental value across our film, television and Starz businesses,” said chief executive officer Jon Feltheimer and vice chairman Michael Burns in their letter to shareholders at Tuesday’s annual meeting.
“It was a year in which we added exciting new franchises to our content portfolio, extended a number of our major brands while cultivating new ones, renewed our key television series and continued the transformation of Starz into a valuable premium global streaming platform distinguished by the quality of its content, the focus of its offering and its unique ability to complement other services,” they said.

Hollywood is set to lose out on a reported $20 billion in revenue this year as the Coronavirus pandemic wreaks chaos on the movie industry, and while it will result in 2021 being the most stacked year for blockbusters in history, it could also lead to a seismic shift in how new releases are handled.
Disney have already ruffled more than a few feathers after pulling Mulan from the schedule and sending it exclusively to Disney Plus, while more and more titles are heading straight to VOD instead of waiting for a gap to open up in the theatrical calendar. This could ultimately lead to the studios focusing even more on sequels and franchises at the expense of smaller projects in the future, which isn’t great news when a lot of big budget output is already suffering from a severe lack of originality.

You can bet your bottom dollar on the fact that if virtually any other director besides Christopher Nolan had made Inception, Warner Bros. would have turned it into a franchise long ago. Not only did the mind-bending heist thriller receive widespread critical acclaim and land an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, but it also raked in a massive $829 million at the box office.
In fact, despite being released ten years ago, Inception is still the only one of the 20 highest-grossing movies in the studio’s history that isn’t connected in some way to either Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings or a DC comic book character. Unfortunately for WB, though, Nolan hasn’t shown much interest in making sequels to any of his features that don’t involve a psychologically-troubled billionaire dressing up as a bat and beating criminals to a pulp.

It might not have been a massive box office success after earning a respectable $90 million against a $26 million budget, but Anchorman almost instantly found a second life on home video and became one of the defining comedies of the 2000s, and for a while you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing somebody quoting one of the many eccentric characters.
Given the continued popularity of the original, talks about a sequel continued for years before the gang finally got back together almost a decade later for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Unfortunately, though, the follow-up missed the mark and failed to recapture the magic, marking the latest in a long line of disappointing late-arriving comedy sequels.
Of course, a third installment wouldn’t face anywhere near as much trouble as its predecessor in escaping from development hell after The Legend Continues doubled the box office gross of the first outing, but...

The big screen adaptations of Stephen King’s It proved to be so popular that it ranks as the fifth highest-grossing horror franchise in history after raking in almost $1.2 billion at the box office, despite only consisting of two movies. Takings may have dropped by over $200 million between Chapters One and Two, with the critical reception also taking a nosedive, but Hollywood has shown countless times over the years that no profitable brand is ever really finished.
Despite there being no source material to work from, speculation has persisted about a potential third installment or spinoff for Pennywise, something that star Bill Skarsgård has previously admitted he was open to. Chapter Two seemed to split opinion down the middle, with some naming it one of the best horror movies of the year and others calling it a massive disappointment, but with the industry’s latest Stephen King renaissance still in full swing,...
