If you haven’t yet seen A24 and Saint Maud director Rose Glass’ new movie Love Lies Bleeding, you should definitely get out there and support it in theaters while you can. The critically acclaimed romantic thriller is one of this year’s best movies so far, driven by incredible lead performances from Katy O’Brian and the always compelling Kristen Stewart.
Katy O’Brian just landed a huge role in Mission Impossible 8, but what’s next for Kristen Stewart? Well, for starters, don’t expect to see her in any Marvel movies anytime soon.
Stewart tells the “Not Skinny but Not Fat” podcast, “I will likely never do a Marvel movie … it sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually.” She further explains, “You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person … and it doesn’t happen.”
“And so therefore what ends up happening is this algorithmic,...

Robert Downey Jr. trekked to Sundance Film Festival’s opening night gala to reveal that a “terrible tragedy” has befallen Christopher Nolan. But don’t worry about the filmmaker behind “Oppenheimer.”
His hardship is really just a bad case of the blues, and it’s because Nolan — as Downey explained on Thursday while bestowing Nolan with the first-ever Trailblazer Award — “has become recognizable on the street.”
According to Downey, the critical and commercial success of “Oppenheimer” means that Nolan can no longer fly under the radar. Casual moviegoers have started to spot the British director, and, as a result, “he recoils, as though from a hot flame, from this new and unwelcome reality.”
Well, Nolan may not be retreating from the spotlight anytime soon. The director, an awards season favorite, was lauded by Downey as an “enigmatic auteur” and “as independent a voice we’ve ever had in cinema.” But the actor,...

Polish soldier and spy Witold Pilecki is getting the big-screen treatment via an international co-production between the United States and Poland.
Powder Hound Pictures and the Polish Film Institute have teamed up to finance and co-produce what is being titled Enemy Of My Enemy and being described as an epic drama.
Matt King wrote the script that adapts the acclaimed book Ochotnik (“The Volunteer”) by Marco Patricelli.
Jayne-Ann Tenggren, who acted as a producer on the Oscar-winning war drama 1917 and who was a protégé of Sam Mendes, is producing with Elizabeth Stillwell, who acted as an executive producer on 2018 Kristen Stewart period drama Lizzie.
A soldier with the Polish Army in World War II, Pilecki volunteered for a Polish resistance operation that involved infiltrating (and later escaping from) the Auschwitz concentration camp. A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

Greer was loved by many of his Little House co-stars. He was praised for his dedication and acting skill. He was also admired for his kindness. Karen Grassle (she played Caroline Ingalls) says Greer was “gentlemanly.” In her book, Bright Lights, Prairie Dust, Grassle says she was impressed when she first met Greer. She enjoyed how his character led the members of Walnut Grove “in sermons with simple morals.”
Grassle appreciated the way Greer made his castmates feel comfortable. She describes him as “a large man from Missouri” with a soft voice. According to her, his Southern accent is what made his voice warm and welcoming. She...

Both in their mid-thirties, Hilary Duff and Josh Peck are learning how to balance their acting careers with parenthood. However, just two decades ago, the pair were both trying to navigate their complex lives as young actors. While their lives share many parallels, Peck has made it clear that he and Duff are very different kinds of child stars for one specific reason.
Josh Peck and Hilary Duff had different experiences as child stars
In the early 2000s, Josh Peck and Hilary Duff were teens thrust into stardom. While the two were both child actors in the late 1990s, they both were able to rise to prominence after landing leading roles on hit kid’s sitcoms. For Peck, his big break came after landing a starring role on the Nickelodeon teen sitcom Drake & Josh. Peck portrayed the lovable Josh Nichols, from 2004 to 2007, alongside his on-screen step-brother Drake Parker, played by Drake Bell.

For young people coming of age in the early 2000s, Hilary Duff is a true pop culture icon. She rose to prominence on the Disney Channel, playing the title character in the beloved series Lizzie McGuire. And she also began a music career.
These days, Duff is still a hardworking actor. Her new series, How I Met Your Father, has earned critical acclaim. While she has always been popular, she hasn’t always received support. In a recent interview with Josh Peck, Duff admitted that Disney didn’t fully support her in her ambitions of becoming a singer.

“How I Met Your Father” is what dreams are made of! The Hulu series dropped a major Easter egg in the latest episode – a tongue-and-cheek reference to one of Hilary Duff‘s most memorable TV roles, “Lizzie McGuire“.
In the episode, titled “A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Valentine’s Day,” which saw the gang revisiting their worst Valentine’s Day experiences, Sophie (Duff) reflects on a memory from when she was 13 years old.
The scene then cuts to a very familiar-looking one from “Lizzie McGuire”, which happens to be the season 2 episode, “First Kiss,” where a teenage Lizzie (a younger Duff) goes through all the stages of a relationship in mere days. In the “Lizzie McGuire” callback, Lizzie is too busy doing the whole “No, you hang up first” exchange over the phone with a boy to notice her friend, Miranda (Lalaine), getting increasingly annoyed by the second.

Although Hilary Duff shot to fame playing Lizzie McGuire on the hit Disney TV series, there came a point when she wanted to detach herself from being known as the beloved titular teenage character.
As soon as Duff wrapped the series, which “shot incredibly fast” for only two seasons, she told Josh Peck and Ben Soffer on this week’s episode of Dear Media’s “Good Guys” podcast that she “wanted to sing.”
“I really didn’t want to be Lizzie McGuire anymore, as cool as it was,” Duff admitted.
“For so long people were just like ‘Lizzie, Lizzie, Lizzie’ and still now to this day, which it doesn’t bother me anymore but it did for a while like I just desperately needed to be my own person,” she explained. “I think that I thought music was gonna be a good way to introduce myself- reintroduce myself- and it was.

Despite the “Lizzie McGuire” revival getting scrapped at Disney+ in 2020, Hilary Duff said she is “optimistic” about a potential reboot during a recent appearance on “Watch What Happens Live.”
When host Andy Cohen asked Duff if she would still consider doing the “Lizzie McGuire” revival if “it lived up to her vision,” the “How I Met Your Father” star responded emphatically, “of course!”
Though Duff was hesitant to reveal what “the main sticking point” was in getting the show off the ground, she referenced the creative differences between Disney+ executives and herself, pointing to the streamer’s newness at the time of development.
“Disney+ was very new and I think they were figuring out their… and we were figuring out our… and I am optimistic,” Duff said.

UK-based fans of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver were spared a 25-minute clip of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill going backwards down a waterslide, set to the theme of The Benny Hill Show.
The HBO host had dared British broadcaster Sky to cut his segment on the British monarchy, saying that he would replace it with the repetitive comedy clip if the Comcast-owned company did so.
Sky decided against the cut and viewers got to see the segment.

“You can make the case that that is in bad taste. You can also make the case that it’s very funny. Two things can be true,” he said.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Hilary Duff‘s much-anticipated revival of “Lizzie McGuire” may have fallen apart a little more than a year ago, but all hope isn’t lost. “I don’t think it’s dead, and I don’t think it’s alive,” Duff tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I think it’s just kind of sitting there.” Duff says the “Lizzie” conversations had been going on for about a decade. “I was like, ‘No, thank you,’” she recalls of first being approached. “And then one day, I was like, ‘Yup.’ There’s much love there.”
But alas, the project was nixed after Disney rejected Duff’s idea to make Lizzie’s comeback more adult than tween.
“There’s always struggle with something that’s so loved and important to so many people,” Duff now says. “I just keep my heart and my mind open.

It’s the end of an era for Disney’s kids and family programming. Gary Marsh will be ending his 33-year executive tenure at the company when he steps down as President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney Branded Television at the end of 2021. He won’t be leaving Disney though — Marsh will be launching his own production company backed by Disney General Entertainment. Under a rich multiyear production deal, Marsh will be developing content for Disney’s streaming and linear platforms including Disney+, Hulu, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, ABC, National Geographic, Freeform and FX.
Marsh is currently finalizing the first projects on the inaugural development slate of his company, including two new Descendants movies, extending the popular Disney Channel movie franchise; the Beauty and the Beast prequel series starring Josh Gad and Luke Evans, which was recently greenlighted by Disney+; as well as projects Tink, a take on Peter...

A “How I Met Your Mother” sequel series titled “How I Met Your Father” has been ordered at Hulu with Hilary Duff attached to star.
In the near future, Sophie (Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options. According to an individual with knowledge of the project, it remains unclear how/if the new show will tie into the original.

The final season of “Younger” premieres April 15, but it’s not necessarily the absolute end for one of its beloved characters.
As Variety previously reported, ahead of the seventh and final season, “Younger” creator Darren Star began to develop a spinoff, which would be centered around Hilary Duff’s character, editor-turned-publisher Kelsey Peters. The potential spinoff still remains in early development, and Star is enthusiastic about the possibility for the new series.
“We’re talking about it. It’s a big question mark whether it’s going to happen,” Star says. “It could be great, but we never know if these things are going to happen until they’re going to happen.”
Star — the prolific TV writer, who also created “Sex and the City,” “Melrose Place,” “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Emily In Paris”– reveals that the spinoff would be set in Los Angeles, rather than New York City, where “Younger” is based.

Costume designers Mark Bridges (“News of the World”), Charlese Antoinette Jones (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Paolo Nieddu (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”) and Natalie O’Brien (“I’m Your Woman”) represent films that span more than 100 years of American history, from post-Civil War Texas to Civil Rights-era Chicago. Wardrobe plays a large part in transporting the audience to a different time and place, but are there any eras these costumers would most like to capture on-screen that they haven’t already? Hulu and Sony Pictures have released the first official trailer for “Happiest Season,” which stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis in a holiday-set romantic-comedy with an LGBTQ love story at the center of the plot. “Happiest Season” is the second feature from actress-turned-director Clea DuVall, who made a splash in her feature debut with the star-studded 2016 comedy “The Intervention.” Duvall co-wrote the script with her screenwriting partner Mary Holland, a comedic actress who appeared on “Veep,” in which DuVall famously played emotionless Secret Service agent Marjorie. From the looks of this trailer, that “Veep” comedic timing served both writers very well.

The actor and singer on growing up in Bremen after the second world war, becoming Germany’s Meryl Streep – and her new octogenarian lesbian romance
Surely, I suggest to Barbara Sukowa – as she strolls around her garden in Brooklyn and I watch from 3,500 miles away on WhatsApp – it’s time lesbians were shown differently in cinema. Out and proud, not leading furtive double lives. Maybe it’s because they are so often set in the past: The Favourite, Lizzie, Ammonite, Portrait of a Lady on Fire. But Two of Us, Sukowa’s new film, about two octogenarian women in a provincial French town, is set in the present day.
That’s not the key difference, she says. “Portrait was about young attractive women. It has a titillating quality for men.” Two of Us is notable for its lack of sensual moments.

The future for Latino voices in mainstream entertainment looks to be a little brighter with the announcement that the Disney+ family series “Diary of a Future President” has been greenlit for a second season.
The series, created by Ilana Peña, originally premiered in January of this year and tells the story of Elena Cañero-Reed (played by newcomer Tess Romero) as she deals with family drama and school, with the audience knowing she will one day become President of the United States. “Jane the Virgin” actress Gina Rodriguez plays an older and Presidential Elena; Rodriguez also acts as executive producer through her production company, I Can and I Will.

The cast of “Lizzie McGuire” has finally reunited –- though not for the much-anticipated series reboot.
Instead, Hilary Duff surprised fans by posting a Zoom table read to Instagram TV. The cast — including Jake Thomas as Lizzie’s little brother Matthew, Adam Lamberg as Gordo, Lalaine as Miranda and Hallie Todd and Robert Carradine as Lizzie’s parents — performed “Between a Rock and a Bra Place” to mark the episode’s 19th anniversary.
“We could not stop laughing reading lines from tween us,” Duff wrote in her caption. “This is the first time we were all ‘together-ish’ in almost 18 years!”
It’s been almost two decades since the show’s first episode. The formerly teenage cast is all grown up, and Lamberg and Thomas both sport mustaches.
Before the table read began, Duff explained how the virtual reunion came to be.

Everybody knows the story of Lizzie Borden. She’s been the subject of rock operas, movies, and TV shows and one very influential nursery rhyme. CBS’s “Lizzie Borden Took an Axe” asks “What if everything told in the past about the famed Lizzie Borden case is wrong?” Erin Moriarty and 48 Hours will investigate the double homicide that captured the nation on Saturday, March 28 at 10 p.m.
The investigative series takes a “fresh look at a very cold case that turns up surprising results” according to the press release. Borden was 32 years old when she was acquitted hacking her father and stepmother to death in 1892. Lizzie became the prime suspect because her sister Emma was out of town and the housekeeper were the only other people in the locked home at the time of the killing. Borden denied having anything to do with the murder but authorities were concerned with her demeanor following the crime.

Disney Plus does not seem to be figuring it out on the way when it comes to the “Lizzie McGuire” revival.
Production on the show halted in January after the firing of original series creator and revival showrunner Terri Minsky after just two episodes were completed. Her unceremonious exit has led many industry insiders to speculate that the revival will not move forward.
Series star Hilary Duff has remained mostly mum on the subject, but she has made her feelings known in some not-so-subtle ways. Late Tuesday night, Duff posted a screenshot to her Instagram story of a news headline about the planned Disney Plus “Love, Simon” series. Now titled “Love, Victor,” the show was moved this week to Hulu after it was deemed not “family-friendly” enough for the Disney-branded streamer. In her post, Duff circled the words “family-friendly” in the headline and wrote above it “Sounds familiar.”

Saban Films doesn’t make the most noise. It doesn’t have the splashiest premieres or parties. But the indie film label just quietly did what many of its early rival failed to pull off. It celebrated its fifth anniversary at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“We stuck to our plan,” Saban Films founder Bill Bromiley told Variety. “Sometimes it was tough seeing our competitors pick up a big movie or pay a lot of money on an awards race. They had all the hype and we were the guys who were sort of in the background.”
Flying a little under the radar served Bromiley and his team well. Saban Films launched in 2014, the same year that Broad Green, an indie label backed by Wall Street multi-millionaire Gabriel Hammond, opened for business. It found itself in competition for films with the likes of Relativity Media, the Orchard, the Weinstein Company,...

Kristen Stewart will star in Ben Foster’s still-untitled directorial debut, an adaptation of William Burrough’s early works and letters.
Foster and Oren Moverman wrote the screenplay for the project — Celluloid Dreams has acquired the international sales rights for the film that will also star Tom Glynn-Carney.
Olive Productions’ Wren Arthur, Waypoint’s Ken Kao, and Sight Unseen’s Moverman are producing, with Olive’s Steve Buscemi serving as executive producer.

The film will explore an unusual love triangle between Burroughs (Foster) and his common-law muse Joan Vollmer (Stewart) and an American ex-pat named Allerton (Glynn-Carney). Burroughs is regarded as the primary literary outlaw of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, who served as an inspiration to many other writers.
“We have found the perfect partners in Hengameh Panahi and Charlotte Mickie of Celluloid Dreams,” Foster stated.

Like most actresses, Kristen Stewart is ready for a sea change in Hollywood. In the years leading up to her coming out officially on “Saturday Night Live” in 2017, Stewart made some of her best work — (“Personal Shopper” and “Certain Women” both came out in 2016) — but it is only in the last few years that she has embraced playing overtly queer characters. In last year’s “Lizzie,” Stewart played impressionable lover to Chloë Sevigny’s murderous Lizzie Borden. She plays another real life character in “Jt LeRoy,” in theaters this weekend, which capitalizes on early aughts nostalgia by dramatizing a literary heist that fascinated the world.
Stewart served on the 2018 Cannes Film Festival competition jury alongside Cate Blanchett and Ava DuVernay; that year the women of Cannes loudly condemned the festival’s dearth of women filmmakers. The actress has never been afraid to speak her mind, especially when it comes to questions of representation in Hollywood.

After her icy spymaster role in Phoebe Waller Bridge’s Killing Eve, the acclaimed stage actor couldn’t resist a part in Fleabag. Finally, she says, women’s roles are improving
For an actress best known for her classical stage work, Fiona Shaw is suddenly all over our screens. In the last six months, she has popped up on TV in Killing Eve and Mrs Wilson, and in cinemas in Lizzie and Colette. Now she’s about to make a guest appearance in the feverishly awaited second series of Fleabag.
Born in Cork, Shaw left for London in her mid-20s and trained at Rada. Now 60, she made her name at the RSC and the National Theatre, where she shone in some of the great tragic roles, including Medea, Electra, Richard II, Mother Courage and Hedda Gabler. She has won two Olivier awards for best actress and an honorary Cbe for services to drama,...

Natasha Lyonne has had an epic career, beginning with her early days as a child star and continuing with roles like the lead role of “Slums of Beverly Hills” and the most sardonic inmate at Litchfield in “Orange Is the New Black.” But her newests Netflix series could be the showcase she’s been looking for since the beginning. “Russian Doll,” co-created by Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland, is set to premiere February 1, 2019, on Netflix.
The official synopsis reads as follows: “‘Russian Doll’ follows a young woman named Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City.”
Vague, but intriguing. What that means for Nadia and her sanity is a question that the show will have to answer, but considering that playwright and filmmaker Headland co-created it, the story will be accompanied by the writer/director’s trademark wry wit,...

How good a movie year was 2018? Netflix got snubbed from the Cannes Film Festival and still managed to give the world “Roma,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “Happy as Lazzaro” and a reconstruction of Orson Welles’ final film (plus two captivating documentaries about its production and restoration). The ubiquitous superhero genre gave us instant classics like “Black Panther” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse,” and even embraced its sillier side with “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies,” “Aquaman” and “Deadpool 2.” This was a year so great that it gave us not one but two juicy lead roles for John C. Reilly.
Paring the year’s highlights down to 25, let alone 10, was no easy feat, but here goes:
#11-25 (alphabetically): “1985,” “Annihilation,” “A Bread Factory,” “Burning,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, “The Favourite,” “First Reformed,” “Lizzie,” “Private Life,” “Shoplifters,” “Skate Kitchen,” “Stan & Ollie,” “A Star Is Born,” “Tully,” “Zama...

Ooh, it’s a great week for horror fans, as this Tuesday’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are a stellar bunch of films that will make for great additions to your personal collection of movies to enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Because it is the holiday season, I’m stoked to see Scream Factory show a little love to Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 with their Collector’s Edition Blu that hits shelves tomorrow, and for those of you who enjoy your horror movies with a side of sleaze, William Lustig’s Maniac has been given the 4K treatment by Blue Underground (and the film has never looked better).
The Mangler is also getting a brand new Blu-ray this week, and Scorpion Releasing is resurrecting Death Ship with their new Special Edition release as well. Vinegar Syndrome is keeping busy with both Ice Cream Man and Beware My Brethren,...

With romantic-comedies thriving at the box office (“Crazy Rich Asians”) and online, it’s hardly surprising to hear Kristen Stewart is embracing the genre for her next acting gig. Stewart is set to star as one of two leads in “Happiest Season,” a holiday-set romantic-comedy with an Lgbtq love story at the center of the plot.
“Happiest Season” is set to be the latest directorial effort for actress Clea DuVall, who had her feature debut behind the camera with the star-studded 2016 comedy “The Intervention.” Duvall is co-writing the script with her screenwriting partner Mary Holland. The story is set an annual family holiday party where a young woman plans to propose to her girlfriend. The plan gets an unexpected twist when the woman finds out her partner hasn’t come out as gay to her conservative parents.

Each year Variety’s New Leaders feature profiles the most prominent up-and-comers in the entertainment business. To determine this year’s worthies, Variety looked across disciplines, from television, digital, music and film, to law and finance, as well as content creators. They were proposed by their bosses and peers who have worked with them and seen their rise. All are age 40 or under, and Variety has measured them by the progress of their career trajectories: do they take calculated risks? How fast have they risen in their companies? Are they innovative and employ solutions to problems that are creative? As part of the salute to the qualities that keep the town humming, filmmaker/producer Travis Knight, who founded Laika Studios and is finishing up the anticipated “Bumblebee” for Paramount, as well as Variety‘s 10 Assistants to Watch along with the New Leaders will be recognized Oct. 17, at the Jeremy Hotel rooftop in West Hollywood.
