Bruce Dern is a two-time Oscar nominee who shows no signs of slowing down, having most recently appeared in Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” (2019). Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1936, Dern made his film debut with an uncredited appearance in Elia Kazan‘s “Wild River” (1960). He popped up in a number of supporting roles throughout the decade, making a name for himself in exploitation films produced by low-budget king Roger Corman.
Dern hit his stride in the 1970s, when a number of offbeat-looking performers suddenly became leading men. He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for Hal Ashby‘s Vietnam War drama “Coming Home” (1978), playing a Ptsd-afflicted marine whose wife (Jane Fonda) falls in love with a paralyzed vet (Jon Voight) while he’s deployed.

Artificial Intelligence or AI is a crucial piece of technology at humanity’s disposal. From education to science, AI can revolutionize processes and change the very landscape of such industries. However, when it comes to the entertainment industry, it is as detrimental as it is beneficial. Artists around the world have been protesting against its use and the use of AI was part of the negotiations during the historic SAG-AFTRA strikes last year.

While artists in Hollywood raise concerns over the use of AI, George Lucas has a different set of beliefs. In a recent interview, the Star Wars creator stated AI and its use within the entertainment industry is inevitable.

Octavia Spencer has said that her aspirations in the film world were initially much smaller than being the Oscar-winning actress she became. In fact, she initially aspired to just work behind the scenes in the film world in an office capacity.
After working office jobs on a few films that shot in her native Alabama, Spencer eventually got a job in the casting department of “A Time to Kill” starring Matthew McConaughey. She convinced director Joel Schumacher to let her audition, and he cast her in a small role in the film. Her friend Taylor encouraged her to move to Los Angeles, and she began to get steady work as an actress. While she worked for 15 solid years in small parts on films and guest appearances on television shows, her career trajectory didn’t seem to be one that would make her a three-time Oscar nominee. The development of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ has faced challenges, experiencing multiple delays due to poor test screenings and the SAG-AFTRA strike, leading to significant story revisions.
Details on the plot remain scarce, except for a brief clip shown at CinemaCon. Notably, the film is expected to feature Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross, Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, select members of the Serpent Society, and Red Hulk.
Talking about ‘The Leader,’ some time back, we shared a marketing concept of the character’s appearance, which left fans rather unimpressed. However, in a recent episode of Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Tim Blake Nelson dropped a surprising revelation. He mentioned that The Leader will primarily rely on practical effects, aiming to minimize the use of CGI as much as possible.
The Leader will be done “as practically as possible, with an absence of digital… stuff.

Exclusive: We can tell you that James Franco and Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones are leading the action thriller The Razor’s Edge from producer Corey Large and filmmaker Demian Lichtenstein (3000 Miles to Graceland).
Red Sea Media is handling international sales and will debut the film for buyers at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes. Cameras roll June 25 in Georgia.
Lichenstein is helming off a screenplay he wrote with Vance Duplechin. After a mob hitman vows to leave his deadly past behind, he faces an impossible choice when his daughter is kidnapped and the woman he loves becomes a target of the syndicate. He is forced to undertake one final, perilous mission while being pursued by an assassin even more lethal.
Pic is executive produced by Kirk Shaw. BondIt Media Capital is financing with Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor and Jordan Nott also executive producing.
“I’m excited that we have signed the superbly talented actors James, Suki and Tommy Lee to bring The Razor’s Edge to the big screen. They are perfectly suited to embody the protagonists in director Demian’s script,” said Large. “We cannot wait to begin filming this taut thriller next month with an assist from our seasoned executive producer Kirk,” he added.
“We’ve worked with Corey on over a dozen projects throughout the years and always appreciate his ability to get projects made in many different industry climates. We’re excited for another adventure here with Corey and his team,” commented Bond It Capital co-founder CEO Matthew Helderman.
Large is producing through his 308 Enterprises. His other feature production, Assassination directed by Rain Man Oscar winner Barry Levinson and starring Academy Award-winner Al Pacino and BAFTA winning Shia Labeouf is shooting this fall.
Franco was Oscar nominated for Best Actor for 127 Hours and is a 2x Golden Globe winner for James Dean, in which he played the title role, and took home Best Actor in Miniseries, and for The Disaster Artist which he won Best Actor Feature Comedy/Musical. He starred in Sony’s original Spider-Man trilogy from Sam Rami.
Oscar, Emmy, SAG, Golden Globe, and Palme d’Or winner Jones counts an Oscar and Golden Globe supporting actor win for The Fugitive and starred in Sony’s Men in Black trilogy. Jones won a Lead Actor Emmy for NBC’s The Executioners’ Song, and a Cannes Palme D’Or for Best Actor for Sony Pictures Classics’ The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada which he also directed. He also directed The Homesman which starred Hilary Swank.
Franco is represented by UTA and Anonymous Content, Jones is represented by CAA and Jacobson, Russell, Saltz, Nassim & De La Torre.

Emma Corrin, the Critics Choice and Golden Globe award-winning and SAG and Emmy Award-nominated British actress, is the guest on this week’s episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience of film students at Chapman University. The 28-year-old discussed their career-making portrayal of Princess Diana — from a 16-year-old schoolgirl to a 28-year-old royal — on season four of Netflix’s The Crown, back in 2020; their identity journey; and their acclaimed, Emmy-buzzed performance in the FX limited series A Murder at the End of the World.
On A Murder at the End of the World, which was created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij (who were also behind Netflix’s The Oa), Corrin stars as a young woman named Darby Hart in two different periods of her life six years apart. The first takes place when she was an amateur detective investigating...

Among the new productions on Broadway this spring is a revival of the classic musical “Cabaret,” starring Eddie Redmayne. In 2014 he starred as Stephen Hawking in director James Marsh‘s biopic “The Theory of Everything.” His performance won him an Oscar for Best Actor (making him the eighth youngest winner in that category at age 33), overcoming stiff competition from Michael Keaton, the star of the Best Picture winner of that year, “Birdman.” How did Redmayne pull through? Here are five reasons.
1. The industry felt he came into his own
Prior to “The Theory of Everything,” Redmayne was a rising star. In 2010 he won a Tony for his Broadway debut starring opposite Alfred Molina in John Logan‘s play “Red.” He went on to get more prominent film roles where critics, audiences and the industry started to take notice of him. Among them were Simon Curtis‘s 2011 Oscar-nominated biopic “My Week with Marilyn...

This weekend marks the last quiet at the box office before summer movie season kicks off with The Fall Guy. As such, it’s expected to be a relatively quiet weekend, with nothing expected to make a debut over the mid-to-high teens. Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers is expected to notch an easy win, thanks to the solid reviews (including our own) and the fact that it features one of the biggest stars of the moment, Zendaya. I’m expecting a debut in the $17 million-ish range, which would be a decent start for distributors Amazon-MGM, who will put the film out on Prime Video before too long.
Originally, Challengers was set for a fall 2023 start, but it was delayed because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. One could understand why, as Zendaya wouldn’t have been available to promote a movie which is earning her rave reviews. While the delay may...

Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.

“Outwardly, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care very much,” Gary Oldman recently said about portraying a disgraced MI5 agent on the acclaimed AppleTV+ spy drama “Slow Horses,” explaining that underneath his disheveled exterior, there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. “He’s unkempt, and he uses it to play a game. It’s a defense mechanism, and I would say he cares a lot more than most.”
Oldman is mesmerizing in “Slow Horses” as the aloof and often contemptuous Jackson Lamb. He’s a pariah living out his twilight days as the begrudging leader of a group of fellow outcasts to whom he is almost comically obnoxious and offensive. He is truly captivating every time he’s on screen. So, a brilliant performance deserves a brilliant Emmy campaign. This year’s races for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were over before they started. Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in “The Holdovers” took leads in the Gold Derby odds in their respective categories early in the season. They both went on to pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. By the time the Oscars rolled around, there was a “near zero” chance of either of them losing.
In contrast, the lead acting contests provided considerably more suspense. Bradley Cooper in “Maestro,” Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer” were all looking strong at different point in the derby, before Murphy really exploded and ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar. And Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Emma Stone in “Poor Things” kept trading the top spot in the Best Actress odds. Gladstone finally reclaimed...

Heading into the 2024 Oscars, most of the above-the-line categories seemed locked in with “Oppenheimer” poised to take Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.) and Best Director (Christopher Nolan). “The Holdovers” was guaranteed a win for Best Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and even the screenplay categories had clear front-runners in “Anatomy of a Fall” and “American Fiction.”
Best Actress was the only major race that held us in suspense to the end. After Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) won the Golden Globe (Comedy/Musical), Critics Choice and BAFTA, and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) took home the Golden Globe (Drama) and SAG Award, the two seemed deadlocked for Oscar glory. However, most of the experts and Gold Derby users predicted Gladstone would prevail, citing her narrative of becoming the first Native American to win Best Actress would help propel her across the finish line.

Robert Downey Jr. has had a phenomenal year after his performance as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer won him multiple accolades, including the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The Avengers star has had multiple career renaissances, with Iron Man aiding his resurgence as an actor, while Oppenheimer introduced a new dimension to his skills.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Downey Jr. was asked along with his fellow nominees what they would be doing if they never became actors. While actors such as Mark Ruffalo and Paul Giamatti preferred to go into the arts, Downey Jr. joked that if he had not been an actor, he would be in prison doing ‘hard time’.

Lily Gladstone’s awards run for Killers of the Flower Moon was historic, with the performer knocking down milestone after milestone: first Indigenous Golden Globe and SAG winner and first Native American Oscar nominee.
Although the votes fell just short of securing her that final superlative — Poor Things’ Emma Stone won the Academy Award for best actress — the Gladstone effect will continue to ripple throughout the industry, say Native members of the community.
Spirit Rangers writer Joey Clift was at a viewing party with other Native creatives on Sunday night. “To see a traditional Osage group performing a song, to be included in the conversation, being honored by this industry that for 100 years hasn’t honored us in that way, it feels like anything’s possible,” he says. “I was having this feeling of for the first time being allowed in the room in a real way.”

Following her whirlwind award season where she won every award she was up for, Da’Vine Joy Randolph completed the sweep as she took home Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in The Holdovers. The historic night was capped off by her being presented the Oscar by past winners Mary Steenburgen, Lupita Nyong’o, Jamie Lee Curtis, Regina King and Rita Moreno.
Nyong’o was the reciepient who introduced Randolph’s nomination and brought her to tears as she touched on how she wore her grandmother’s glasses during her performance.

Last year, all four acting Oscars were taken home by first-time nominees. Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor) all won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Brendan Fraser claimed Best Actor for “The Whale.” This was a historical achievement as the last time this happened was back in 2006 when Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for “Capote”), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress for “Walk the Line”), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor “Syriana”), and Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”) all won on their first nominations.
But while it’s unlikely for all four acting categories to go to newbies, what about each individual acting category? Well, we’ve broken down each acting category and examined every acting winner of the last 20 years to see which category is most likely to award newbies and which is most reluctant to.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

Robert Downey Jr. looks to have Best Supporting Actor locked up after he swept the precursors for his sterling turn in Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer.” But while Downey Jr. would be more than a deserving winner for his phenomenal performance, the Oscars always throws up a surprise or two on the actual night. Could we see an upset in Best Supporting Actor?
Downey Jr. is nominated alongside Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), and Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Gosling has lots of support for his sublime “Barbie” performance while Ruffalo and Brown also have their backers, too. However, the legendary De Niro could prove to be the closest challenger to Downey Jr. thanks to his iconic career and status.

Alexander Payne movies always do well in two areas come the Oscar nominations: writing and acting. Five of Payne’s movies have been nominated for writing while five of his flicks have also snagged acting bids. However, while “Sideways” and “The Descendants” both took home Oscars for their writing (both for Best Adapted Screenplay), no Payne movie has ever won for acting. Here’s the record.
“About Schmidt” procured a Best Actor nomination in 2003 for Jack Nicholson. He was in a two-horse race for the Best Actor gong with “Gangs of New York” star Daniel Day-Lewis but it was Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) who ended up winning by splitting the votes. Kathy Bates was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for “About Schmidt” but she lost to Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”).
Paul Giamatti was cruelly snubbed for a Best Actor bid for “Sideways” in 2005 but two of his costars were nominated.

With an “Oppenheimer” steamroller forecast on nearly everyone’s radar, there was plenty of consensus among the guys, including the fact “Oppenheimer” is a lock for Best Picture and its director Christopher Nolan for Best Director. Also, they’re unanimous in picking Robert Downey Jr. in supporting actor for (ho-hum) “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) in supporting actress, both of whom have treated awards season as their personal plaything while sweeping up everything in sight. “It’s kind of Christopher Nolan’s fault that he made awards season so boring,...

Normally this is the part where we take you on a brief temperature check on—if not philosophical flight of fancy over—the state of the movie industry and how that will factor into what’s occupying most of the real estate in Oscar voters’ heads. We usually delve into why in fact the whole annual spectacle serves just about anything but the purported task of rewarding the previous year’s best cinematic work. How does Parasite represent the best-case scenario for a more international AMPAS? Does Tár surgically unpack our anxieties about representation, or does it just exploit them? Why Green Book, why now? But seeing how Mark Harris, in this weekend’s New York Times, pretty thoroughly wrapped up that legwork this go-around, and recognizing that there’s only so many angles we can take to argue the functional utility that Oppenheimer has market-cornered in this year’s race,...

“I despise auditions,” Marlon Brando barked as he launched into the audition for his role in The Godfather. It was his idea, I reminded him, so he himself had caused his actors angst, not the studio.
Actors’ angst was much in evidence yet again last weekend at the SAG Awards. Brilliant performances were being honored, formidable talent was on display, and Barbra Streisand clearly owned the room.
But the evening had a problematic subtext: The anticipated turnaround in job opportunities hadn’t happened across Hollywood. The epoch of “peak TV” seems to be drifting away, with words like “contraction” echoing in the trade.
To be sure, none of this inhibited SAG honorees from thanking their casting directors for their good picks and even endorsing the Academy’s decision to create a new entity: a casting branch.

Hollywood heartthrob Bradley Cooper is currently dating Gigi Hadid. Despite being linked to many women, 2011’s People magazine‘s Sexiest Man Alive insists he’s far from being a ladies’ man. The actor first got married to actress Jennifer Esposito in 2006. But their romance didn’t last long and they divorced four months later.
Cooper then went on to date Renée Zellweger, his co-star Zoe Saldaña, model-actress Suki Waterhouse, and Russian supermodel Irina Shayk, with whom he has a daughter named Lea de Seine.
Since parting ways with Shayk in 2019, the Maestro star has reportedly been seeing Huma Abedin. While Cooper has been often linked to high-profile celebrities, he’s especially grateful for the daughter he shares with one of his previous partners.

The SAG Awards are huge — in Canada.
Netflix live-streamed the Screen Actors Guild’s event on Saturday, and though the awards show did not make the Top 10 in the U.S. (or globally), it did in exactly one country: Canada. As a matter of fact, it made the Top 9 (at number nine) there.
We don’t know exactly how the SAG Awards fared in the U.S. — not yet. Currently, all we know is that it had fewer than 2.1 million views in the U.S..
There will be a point at which time we will know exactly how the 2024 SAG Awards performed. Netflix is now performing a giant data dump twice per year sharing the hours viewed for any and every title that was streamed for at least 50,000 hours over six months. For the fourth consecutive year, we’ve got a firecracker of a Best Actress Oscar race. Lily Gladstone took home the Screen Actors Guild Award on Saturday for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone, who had been on a roll since the two won their respective Golden Globes, having pocketed the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards for “Poor Things.” Now they each have an industry prize and Best Actress feels like a coin-flip. Gladstone has closed the gap on Stone in the Oscar odds since Saturday. Don’t be surprised if she overtakes the top spot soon. But when the SAG Awards and BAFTAs don’t align in Best Actress, which one has the edge at the Oscars?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 23 years ago, the Brits and the actors guilds have disagreed 13 times in the category prior to the Battle of the Stones. But not all splits are created equally.

Lily Gladstone, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is a trailblazing Native American actress whose breakout performance in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon, as an Osage woman named Mollie Burkhart whose oil wealth made her a target of white men during what is known as the “Reign of Terror,” has made her a bona-fide star. Indeed, she has already won the best actress in a motion picture drama Golden Globe Award and the best actress National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle and SAG awards; she was nominated for the best actress Critics Choice Award; and she is nominated, in a first for an Indigenous American, for the best actress Academy Award.

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:

The Screen Actors Guild Awards presented its coveted actor statuettes at the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, held 24 February at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. The ceremony, produced by Silent House Productions in partnership with SAG-AFTRA, streamed live globally on Netflix. One of awards season’s premier events, the SAG Awards annually celebrates the outstanding motion picture and television performances from the previous calendar year. Of the top industry honours presented to actors, only the SAG Awards are selected entirely by performers’ peers in SAG-AFTRA with 119,000+ eligible voters — the largest voting body on the awards circuit. The two nominating panels — one for television and one for motion picture — were each composed of 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members from across the United States. Beloved for its style, simplicity, and genuine warmth, the show has become an industry favourite since its debut in 1995.

A jam-packed weekend of last-gasp Oscar campaigning — the film Academy’s final round of voting opened on Feb. 22 and will close on Feb. 27 — kicked off on Saturday night with the 30th SAG Awards, the first major awards show ever to be streamed on Netflix. But do Saturday night’s results actually provide reliable clues about what will happen two weeks from Sunday night at the 96th Oscars?
I would argue that they probably do.
SAG Award winners are determined by the roughly 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA, the world’s largest union of actors, whereas Oscar winners are determined by the roughly 9,500 voting members of the film Academy, 86 percent of whom are not actors, which would suggest that any overlap is purely coincidental.
But it is quite a statement that SAG-AFTRA members voted best actor in a film — which has long looked to be neck-and-neck between Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer over Paul Giamatti...

The SAG Awards marked a first on Saturday night, as the ceremony aired live on Netflix, rather than on traditional broadcast television. As a result, that meant that none of the actors who sweared on stage were bleeped out — but that was only one of the highlights of the night.
As always, the show had some clears standout moments and speeches, beginning with the very first award. There were reunions, there was face-signing, there was drunken emotions, so let’s run it all down.
Here are the five best moments of this year’s SAG Awards (in no particular order):

Oppenheimer won the marquee Cast in a Motion Picture prize as the 30th annual SAG Awards were presented Saturday, and its star Cillian Murphy might have wrestled Oscar front-runner status away from Paul Giamatti by taking the trophy for Male Actor in a Leading Role.
Lily Gladstone was cemented as the favorite for the Best Actress Oscar, winning Female Actor in a Leading Role for Killers of the Flower Moon at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in a ceremony streaming live on Netflix for the first time.

Robert Downey Jr won the Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Oppenheimer in a mini-upset. But the evening’s first film award wasn’t much of a surprise as Da’vine Joy Randolph continued her awards-season dominance with a Supporting win for The Holdovers.

Odds are that three of the four individual film winners at the SAG Awards on February 24 will be collecting Oscars two weeks later. Over the past 29 years, 87 of the 116 Academy Awards winners in the four acting races had first collected SAG Awards. That success rate of 75% makes this precursor prize a key bellwether to follow when making your 2024 Oscar predictions.
In each of the last two years, all four SAG champs repeated at the Oscars. In 2023, leads Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) plus “Everything” featured performers Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan all had a chance to practice their Oscar acceptance speeches at these guild kudos. Likewise in 2022 for leads Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) plus supporting players Troy Kotsur (“Coda”) and Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”).
But be warned: a perfect record of 4 for 4 has occurred just 10 times.
