In 2014 and 2015, Vertigo published Si Spencer’s eight-issue graphic novel Bodies, a mind-bending mystery about four police officers from different historical eras who discover the same corpse in the same London location, decades apart. Featuring detectives from the present day, the 1940s, the 1890s and 2053, it’s a complex conspiracy thriller about a very dark future. Originally illustrated by four artists – Dean Ormston, Phil Winslade, Meghan Hetrick and Tula Lotay – each era had its own distinct feel and look.
Spencer, who had also written on other Vertigo titles including Judge Dredd and Books of Magick: Life During Wartime, sadly passed away in February 2021, meaning he wasn’t able to see Paul Tomalin’s eight-part Netflix series adapted from his work. It’s out now, with a sprawling cast of characters including Boiling Point and This Is England’s Stephen Graham, several established actors and a handful of newcomers. Here’s more about them.

Veteran Rai exec Adriano De Maio has been trying to shake things up at the Italian state broadcaster since last May, when he was appointed head of film and drama.
To contend with the unstoppable disruption caused by digital and streaming in Italy’s TV landscape, De Maio is trying to steer Rai toward programming that provides more cultural enrichment, while also catering to the youth demographic that drives traffic on the pubcaster’s Rai Play streaming platform — which has more than 23 million subscribers, way more than Netflix’s Italian customer base.
As Rai faces possible budget cuts due to the government’s decision to lower its license fee [Rai’s current allocation for film and TV series was not immediately available], De Maio sat down with Variety in Rome to discuss his vision for the scripted content he’d like Rai to acquire for its viewers. If he has his way, they will probably be getting less Hollywood shows and more movies,...

Fox Corp.’s Tubi, its free, ad-supported streaming TV service, has pounced on two high-profile Fantasia titles, led by “Where the Devil Roams,” the Adams family’s follow-up to “Hellbender,” Rotten Tomatoes No. 1 movie on its Top 10 of best-rated horror films of 2022, just besting Eskil Vogt’s “The Innocents.”

Fortress: Sniper’s Eye isn’t the only new Bruce Willis film to come out recently. Corrective Measures, an odd mix of action, prison, science fiction and monster movies makes its debut as well. The reason you may not have heard of it is, that it’s another Tubi Original. Short of working for Rene Perez, that’s the most pathetic way for Willis to end his career I can think of.
Corrective Measures opens with a parking garage execution gone wrong as a band of goons led by what appears to be a werewolf are wiped out by the vigilante known as Payback just so he can have the pleasure of killing their intended victim himself before the cops arrest him. He’s sent to prison, but not just any prison,...

Sir Edmund Hillary’s family will ascend the mountain that made their grandfather a household name in a new documentary being launched in Cannes.
Directed by Ben Webster, one of the world’s top expedition leaders, “Everest: Legacy” is currently in pre-production and will be shopped to buyers by New York-headquartered documentary sales firm Cargo Film & Releasing, which has picked up world rights.
The film follows Hillary’s son Peter and his grandchildren, along with the world’s best climbing Sherpa, Tendi, on an epic family climb of Everest next spring. Along the journey, the film will highlight the changes on Everest — which has become dangerously congested over the years with a high traffic of eager climbers — in contrast to when it was first climbed by Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in May 1953.

"Is nothing sacred to you?!" Amazon Studios has unveiled an official US trailer for Annette, the new Leos Carax film that will kick off the 2021 Cannes Film Festival on opening night in just a few weeks. This film was also part of last year's selection before the festival was cancelled, and has been held over to debut this year instead. The description for Annette says it's "a magnificent, glorious musical set in Hollywood." Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard star as famous lovers, who end up having a baby, named Annette, that gets extra attention and is instantly famous. Also starring Simon Helberg as "The Conductor". This new trailer is very similar to the original French trailer, using most of the same footage with a few extra shots thrown in. This does look like an epic Sparks musical (they wrote the script and music) about famous musicians and how their life...

"Being the first is a tough job, and I think this is why she is fighting so much for us. A festival promo trailer has debuted for an indie documentary film titled The Conductor, made by Austrian filmmaker Bernadette Wegenstein. It is premiering at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival coming up very soon, and is still looking to confirm distribution before any release is set. Told she couldn't become a music conductor because she was a girl, Marin Alsop persisted – until, against all odds, she broke through and became one of the world's most renowned classical music conductors. The Conductor takes us on her journey, born and raised in New York City, her tenacity and hard work took her from childhood days attending concerts at Lincoln Center to conducting symphonies in Baltimore, Såo Paolo, and even Vienna. "It's a triumphant film about overcoming discrimination and realizing one’s talent against all odds.

Exclusive: Cargo Film & Releasing has acquired sales rights to The Conductor and Father of the Cyborgs, a pair of documentary features premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.
Directed by Bernadette Wegenstein, and produced by Annette Porter of Nylon Films, The Conductor tells the overdue story of world-renowned conductor Marin Alsop, who was the first woman to serve as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, as well as the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. After years of overcoming various obstacles and proving naysayers wrong, we see how Marin was able to succeed against all odds, and break the glass ceiling for women conductors around the world. The film notably utilizes stirring musical segments conducted by Alsop herself, to accentuate the highs and lows of her life, and reflect for the audience her inner world.

As announced this month, French director Leos Carax’s “Annette” is finally in production after years of stops and starts. Carax’s first feature since 2012’s “Holy Motors” and his first full-on English-language film, “Annette” is a musical set in Los Angeles that will feature original music from the ’70s rock band Sparks and tells a love story between a stand-up comic (Adam Driver) and an opera star (Marion Cotillard). Also joining the cast is Simon Helberg (“The Big Bang Theory”) in a role mysteriously dubbed “The Conductor.”
Both actors do their own singing. And Cotillard brought tragic singer Edith Piaf lovingly back to life for 2007’s “La Vie En Rose,” which earned her a Best Actress Academy Award. Adding to the intrigue, music producer Marius de Vries — known for his work on “La La Land,” “Moulin Rouge,” and “Cats” — will collaborate with Sparks.
Amazon Studios has the U.S.

The Umbrella Academy features a handful of very colorful villains. Here is how they differ from their comic counterparts.
The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 1 on Netflix and The Umbrella Academy comic series.
The Umbrella Academy was always going to lose some stuff in translation from comic book to Netflix's servers. Luther's giant blue Martian gorilla body probably wasn't going to make it. But one thing that seemed for sure is the villain or villains of the piece would remain the same.
That ultimately wasn't the case as The Umbrella Academy did some re-imaginings and some moving around of the comic’s villains to better suit the TV show's needs. In the process, one villain remained almost exactly the same, one villain changed completely, and two other villains were bumped up from their scheduled appearance in what would have been The Umbrella Academy Season...
